• What is the accepted pattern for WPF commanding in MVVM?

  I'm working on a WPF app and I understand the command pattern pretty well, but I've found that there are several different implementations of the command pattern for MVVM. There's Josh Smith's implementation in his WPF sample app, the DelegateCommand from Prism, and the CommandBindings implementation. My question is, what is the generally accepted best practice for using commands with MVVM? My application uses Prism so DelegateCommand is available to us. The devs on my team are arguing about which approach is "best." Some don't like the numerous .cs files generated for each command, others prefer that everything be wired up via CommandBindings. I'm at a loss. Can anyone shed some light?

  Hi guys, Is there a way to have treat google serach results as an rss feed? For example say I worked for stackoverflow and wanted to montior how if the results from the following search url: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=stackoverflow changes from day today. It would be cool if I could append &output=rss to the url and get back a feed like with google news. But that does not seem to be supported. Anyone have ideas? (Note I am programing with Ruby and Rails, if that matters) Thanks! Jonathan

• What Level of Education Is Most Useful?

  If you were going to hire a programmer to work for/with you, what level of CS education would you prefer them to have and why? This assumes all other things are equal which, of course, they never are in real life. Self taught? Bachelor's? Masters? PHD? The important part of the answer is why, not the level. I'm looking for how important people think a Computer Science education really is and if one can go too far. A little clarification: To make things a little more even, assume you're hiring them without a lot of work experience. Obviously having a higher education is of less value the farther you are from graduation.

• MVC Client Validation from Service Layer

  I'm following this article http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/older-versions/models-(data)/validating-with-a-service-layer-cs to include a Service Layer with Business Logic in my MVC Web Application. I'm able to pass messages from the Service Layer to the View Model in a Html.ValidationSummary using ModelState Class. I perform basic validation logic on the View Model (using DataAnnotation attributes) and I have ClientValidation enabled by default which displaying the error message on every single field of my form. The Business logic error message which come from the Service Layer are being displayed on Html.ValidationSummary only after Posting the form to the Server. After Validation from the Service Layer I would like highlight one or more fields and have the message from the Service Layer showing on these fields instead that the Html.ValidationSummary. Any idea how to do it? Thanks

• Unable to set relative path for flash file in ASP.NET MVC using AC_FL_RunContent

  Hi, I have a website using asp.net mvc in which I need to embed a flash file in view. I am unable to set the relative path for the flash file. Given below is the code I am using: AC_FL_RunContent( 'codebase', 'http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,19,0', 'width', '487', 'height', '359', 'menu', 'false', 'movie', 'images/butterfly', 'quality', 'high', 'allowscriptaccess', 'sameDomain', 'pluginspage', 'http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer' ); where I copied butterfly.swf in a directory called images. images directory resides in the views folder. If I use code behind( default.aspx default.aspx.cs) in a different solution with the same folder strucuture, browser is able to load the flash file.   Im looking for a (free) solution to a bookingcalender. Among many candidates Ive found the Jquery Full Calender which has many cool features. One of the reason that I like this one is because it has "drag and drop" and resize, which I also need. But I also need to have the dayview where I the columms monday, tuesday, wedensday, thursday friday .... gets replaced with fx. Room1, Room2, Room3, Room4, Room5, Room6, Room7. The only result is how to create and expose them by creating an .aspx page. • Force exceptions language in English

  My Visual Studio 2005 is a French one, installed on a French OS. All the exceptions I receive during debug or runtime I obtain also in French. Can I however do something that the exceptions messages be in English? For goggling, discussing etc. I tried the following: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo("en-US"); throw new NullReferenceException(); obtained Object reference not set to an instance of an object. This is, surely, cool... but, as I work on a French project, I will not hardcode forcing Thread.CurrentUICulture to English. I want the English change to be only on my local machine, and don't change the project properties. Is it possible to set the exceptions language without modifying the code of the application? • How do you use kate? Tips/Tricks/Workflow

  We all seen a bunch of these? Mostly for IDE's but also for vim and emacs. Kate is (only) a text editor (an awesome one) but it has a ton of options plus a number of plugins, so its hard to know all of it well. How do use the Kate text editor? Please share your workflow and help me and others learn some of the cool tricks you use. I'll start I use the built in terminal a lot opening files quickly, and using it as an enhanced haskell repl with ghci (since ghci doesn't allow you all to just put in all kinds of haskell code). Also use split views to quickly compare files (especially different versions of the same file). Also the auto-complete maybe simple(more use for saving typing time then remembering functions) but it works really well for that. Also if You highlight something and hit a start [/{/( it puts it in between brackets rather then replacing it with a bracket(why the hell do a lot of IDEs not have this feature).

• Can I use multiple step definition files with SpecFlow?

  I'm using SpecFlow to do some BDD-style testing. Some of my features are UI tests, so they use WatiN. Some aren't UI tests, so they don't. At the moment, I have a single StepDefinitions.cs file, covering all of my features. I have a BeforeScenario step that initializes WatiN. This means that all of my tests start up Internet Explorer, whether they need it or not. Is there any way in SpecFlow to have a particular feature file associated with a particular set of step definitions? Or am I approaching this from the wrong angle?

  Currently i am using reflection with sql. I find if i want to make a specialize query it is easiest to get the results by creating a new class inheriting from another and adding the 2 members/columns for my specialized query. Then due to reflections in the lib in my c# code i can write foreach(var v in list) { v.AnyMember and v.MyExtraMember) Now instead of having the class scattered around or modifying my main DB.cs file can i define a class inside a function? I know i can create an anonymous object by writing new {name=val, name2=...}; but i need a to pass this class in a generic function func(query, args);

  What's the best disassembler tool for the .NET reflector? By best I mean, saving a .NET assembly in a disassembled state in most readable, most likely to compile with fewer changes. The current one I use doesn't show simplified enumeration but shows the full IEnumerable implementations with MoveNext, etc with member names like: this.<4_state CS$<9_CachedAnonymousMethodDelegate3 Btw I am not trying to steal code, just trying out certain things on an already existing assembly instead of writing a similar thing from scratch. In the end, it's what I will learn from this that will stay, not the modified assembly.

• Flex: Would a computational engine for a Connect-4 type game be too slow?

  OK, I was just fooling around in my spare time and have made this cool interface and game-playing code for a Connect-4 type game, written in Flex and playable by 2 human players in Flash. It accurately detects wins, etc. I'm smart enough to know that I've done the easy part. Before I dig into an AI for game play, I wanted to ask if this is the kind of thing that can really be handled computationally by a Flash plugin. It seems to me that for every turn up until the end there are 8 possible moves, 8 responses to each move, etc. So wouldn't a perfect engine have to be able to potentially see 8^8 moves (over 16 million), and a fairly good engine see up to a million? I don't know game coding so this is new to me. What's a reasonable move horizon for such a game to be able to see?

• WPF/MVVM - should we create a different Class for each ViewModel ?

  I'm attempting the example from the excellent "How Do I" video for MVVM by Todd Miranda found in MSDN. I'm trying to adapt the example for my learning purpose. In the example, he has a ViewModel called EmployeeListViewModel. Now if I want to include Departments, should I create another ViewModel such as DepartmentListViewModel? The example has EmployeeRepository as the Data Source. In my case, I'm trying to use an Entity object as the datasource (Employees.edmx in Model folder and EmployeeRepository.cs in DataAccess folder). If I want to display the list of Departments, should I create a separate class called DepartmentRepository and put all department related method definitions there? What if I want to retrieve the employee name and their department's name together? Where should I place the methods for this? I'm very new to WPF and MVVM and please let me know if any of the above needs to be re-phrased. Thank you for all the help.

• Have a reloadData for a UITableView animate when changing

  Hi everyone. I have a UITableView that has two modes. When we switch between the modes I have a different number of sections and cells per section. Ideally, it would do some cool animation when the table grows or shrinks. • Change LINQ2SQL property in partial class?

  Hi, I have a table in my LINQ2SQL diagram with a column called DayOfWeek in table JourneyBooking. The designer.cs has the definition of this as: [Column(Storage="_DayOfWeek", DbType="TinyInt NOT NULL")] public int DayOfWeek { get { return this._DayOfWeek; } set { if ((this._DayOfWeek != value)) { this.OnDayOfWeekChanging(value); this.SendPropertyChanging(); this._DayOfWeek = value; this.SendPropertyChanged("DayOfWeek"); this.OnDayOfWeekChanged(); } } } I have a partial class for the JourneyBooking class. Is it possible to extend/overwrite the above DayOfWeek property with my own property? The issue I am having is that DayOfWeek is 0-6 in C# but 1-7 in SQL, so I was thinking that I could overwrite the DayOfWeek property to subtract or add 1 depending on whether it was a get or set, is this possible or would I need to re-write all of the above code in my partial class?

  Intro: After reading Brad Wilson Metadata series and searching unsuccesfully on google, I was wondering: Question: Has any OS project / code been created that allows you to tag CSS styles in the Meta information, for example in my (buddy) Model, I want to be able to decorate a property with multiple CSS styles (a single style you can fake with UIHint, I want to set many possible styles - and be able to "cross-utilise") eg. public class MyModel { [DisplayCssHint("h5")] [DisplayCssHint("color:#777;")] [EditorCssHint(".myCoolTextClass")] [EditorCssHint(".myOtherCoolTextClass")] public string Title{ get;set; } [DisplayCssHint(".normaltext")] [EditorCssHint(".myCoolTextClass")] [EditorCssHint(".myOtherCoolTextClass")] public string Message {get;set;} } Thoughts: I know that this does not seem like a logical place to put styling information, however as it is metadata and is discriptive... besides it would be nice to do this while prototyping - (especially being able to apply class styles and extending it further - to generate .Less files would really be cool! more to the point I would hate to write it, if its already been done ;).   Hi All, I'm looking for a generic "Row Picker" for JQuery. We've all seen the cool "Picker" tools like date pickers, color pickers, time pickers, etc, where you click in a text box and a little calendar or color palate or clock or something comes up. You select something (like a date) and the text box is then populated with a value. I really need an all-purpose "row picker" where you can populate something (a table, divs, etc) with some rows of data (say a list of timezones). This would be linked to a text field and would pop up when the user clicks in the field. They would click a row (say a timezone), and the timezone id would be passed back to the field. Anyone know of anything that does this? Thanks!

• WCF Windows service permissions problem

  I have created a WCF service and hosted it using Windows Services host. To install the project I created an installation project (as described here). In the tutorial, it says to define in the ProjectInstaller.cs the serviceProcessInstaller1 Account property to be Network Service. When using this setting the service did not started on the server. When I tried to start the process manually, it immediately return to stopped state. After when I changed the Account to LocalSystem the service works properly. My questions are: Any ideas why it won't work with Network Service account? What are the security implications of using a server with LocalSystem account? This server is used locally in the intranet as a reporting server for other servers.

• Visual Studio 2010 Publish Web feature not including all DLLs

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 application. Web project contains a reference to SomeProject SomeProject contains references to ExternalAssembly1 and ExternalAssembly2. SomeProject explicitly calls into ExternalAssembly1, but NOT ExternalAssembly2. ExternalAssembly1 calls into ExternalAssembly2 When I perform a local build everything is cool. All DLLs are included in the bin\debug folder. The problem is that when I use the Publish Web command in Visual Studio 2010, it deploys everything except ExternalAssembly2. It appears to ignore assemblies that aren't directly used (remember, ExternalAssembly2 is only used by ExternalAssembly1). Is there any way I can tell Visual Studio 2010 to include ExternalAssembly2?
