  The SQL Server Analysis Service is a very interesting subject and I always have enjoyed learning about it. You can read my earlier article over here. Big Data is my new interest and I have been exploring it recently. During this weekend this blog post caught my attention and I enjoyed reading it. Big Data is the next big thing. The growth is predicted to be 60% per year till 2016. There is no single solution to the growing need of the big data available in the market right now as well there is no one solution in the business intelligence eco-system available as well. However, the need of the solution is ever increasing. I am personally Klout user. You can see my Klout profile over. I do understand what Klout is trying to achieve – a single place to measure the influence of the person. However, it works a bit mysteriously. There are plenty of social media available currently in the internet world. The biggest problem all the social media faces is that everybody opens an account but hardly people logs back in. To overcome this issue and have returned visitors Klout has come up with the system where visitors can give 5/10 K+ to other users in a particular area. Looking at all the activities Klout is doing it is indeed big consumer of the Big Data as well it is early adopter of the big data and Hadoop based system.  Klout has to 1 trillion rows of data to be analyzed as well have nearly thousand terabyte warehouse. Hive the language used for Big Data supports Ad-Hoc Queries using HiveQL there are always better solutions. The alternate solution would be using SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) along with HiveQL. As there is no direct method to achieve there are few common workarounds already in place. A new ODBC driver from Klout has broken through the limitation and SQL Server Relation Engine can be used as an intermediate stage before SSAS. • SQL SERVER – SSAS – Multidimensional Space Terms and Explanation

  I was presenting on SQL Server session at one of the Tech Ed On Road event in India. I was asked very interesting question during ‘Stump the Speaker‘ session. I am sharing the same with all of you over here. Question: Can you tell me in simple words what is dimension, member and other terms of multidimensional space? There is no simple example for it. This is extreme fundamental question if you know Analysis Service. Those who have no exposure to the same and have not yet started on this subject, may find it a bit difficult. I really liked his question so I decided to answer him there as well blog about the same over here. Answer: Here are the most important terms of multidimensional space – dimension, member, value, attribute and size. Dimension – It describes the point of interests for analysis. Member – It is one of the point of interests in the dimension. Value – It uniquely describes the member. Attribute – It is collection of multiple members. Size – It is total numbers for any dimension. Let us understand this further detail taking example of any space. I am going to take example of distance as a space in our example. Dimension – Distance is a dimension for us. Member – Kilometer – We can measure distance in Kilometer. Value – 4 – We can measure distance in the kilometer unit and the value of the unit can be 4. Attribute – Kilometer, Miles, Meter – The complete set of members is called attribute. Size – 100 KM – The maximum size decided for the dimension is called size. The same example can be also defined by using time space. Here is the example using time space. • SQL SERVER – DELETE, TRUNCATE and RESEED Identity

  Yesterday I had a headache answering questions to one of the DBA on the subject of Reseting Identity Values for All Tables. After talking to the DBA I realized that he has no clue about how the identity column behaves when there is DELETE, TRUNCATE or RESEED Identity is used. Let us run a small T-SQL Script. Create a temp table with Identity column beginning with value 11. The seed value is 11. USE [TempDB] GO -- Create Table CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestTable]( [ID] [int] IDENTITY(11,1) NOT NULL, [var] [nchar](10) NULL ) ON [PRIMARY] GO -- Build sample data INSERT INTO [TestTable] VALUES ('val') GO When seed value is 11 the next value which is inserted has the identity column value as 11. – Select Data SELECT * FROM [TestTable] GO Effect of DELETE statement -- Delete Data DELETE FROM [TestTable] GO When the DELETE statement is executed without WHERE clause it will delete all the rows. However, when a new record is inserted the identity value is increased from 11 to 12. It does not reset but keep on increasing. -- Build sample data INSERT INTO [TestTable] VALUES ('val') GO -- Select Data SELECT * FROM [TestTable] Effect of TRUNCATE statement -- Truncate table TRUNCATE TABLE [TestTable] GO When the TRUNCATE statement is executed it will remove all the rows. However, when a new record is inserted the identity value is increased from 11 (which is original value). TRUNCATE resets the identity value to the original seed value of the table. -- Build sample data INSERT INTO [TestTable] VALUES ('val') GO -- Select Data SELECT * FROM [TestTable] GO Effect of RESEED statement If you notice I am using the reseed value as 1. The original seed value when I created table is 11. However, I am reseeding it with value 1. -- Reseed DBCC CHECKIDENT ('TestTable', RESEED, 1) GO When we insert the one more value and check the value it will generate the new value as 2. This new value logic is Reseed Value + Interval Value – in this case it will be 1+1 = 2. -- Build sample data INSERT INTO [TestTable] VALUES ('val') GO -- Select Data SELECT * FROM [TestTable] GO Here is the clean up act. -- Clean up DROP TABLE [TestTable] GO Question for you: If I reseed value with some random number followed by the truncate command on the table what will be the seed value of the table. (Example, if original seed value is 11 and I reseed the value to 1. If I follow up with truncate table what will be the seed value now? Here is the complete script together. • SQL SERVER – ERROR: FIX using Compatibility Level – Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner – Part 2

  Earlier I wrote a blog post about how to resolve the error with database diagram. Today I faced the same error when I was dealing with a database which is upgraded from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2. When I was searching for the solution online I ended up on my own earlier solution SQL SERVER – ERROR: FIX – Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. I really found it interesting that I ended up on my own solution. However, the solution to the problem this time was a bit different. Let us see how we can resolve the same. Error: Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects. Workaround / Fix / Solution : Follow the steps listed below and it should for sure solve your problem. (NOTE: Please try this for the databases upgraded from previous version. For everybody else you should just follow the steps mentioned here.) Select your database >> Right Click >> Select Properties Go to the Options In the Dropdown at right labeled “Compatibility Level” choose “SQL Server 2005(90)” Select FILE in left side of page In the OWNER box, select button which has three dots (…) in it Now select user ‘sa’ or NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and click OK. This will solve your problem. However, there is one very important note you must consider. When you change any database owner, there are always security related implications. I suggest you check your security policies before changing authorization. I did this to quickly solve my problem on my development server. If you are on production server, you may open yourself to potential security compromise.   Everybody was beginner once and I always like to get involved in the questions from beginners. There is a big difference between the question from beginner and question from advanced user. I have noticed that if an advanced user gets an error, they usually need just a small hint to resolve the problem. However, when a beginner gets error he sometimes sits on the error for a long time as he/she has no idea about how to solve the problem as well have no idea regarding what is the capability of the product. I recently received a very novice level question. When I received the problem I quickly see how the user was stuck. When I replied him with the solution, he wrote a long email explaining how he was not able to solve the problem. He thanked multiple times in the email. This whole thing inspired me to write this quick blog post. I have modified the user’s question to match the code with AdventureWorks as well simplified so it contains the core content which I wanted to discuss. Problem Statement: Find all the details of SalesOrderHeaders for the latest ShipDate. He comes up with following T-SQL Query: SELECT * FROM [Sales].[SalesOrderHeader] WHERE ShipDate = MAX(ShipDate) GO When he executed above script it gave him following error: Msg 147, Level 15, State 1, Line 3 An aggregate may not appear in the WHERE clause unless it is in a subquery contained in a HAVING clause or a select list, and the column being aggregated is an outer reference. He was not able to resolve this problem, even though the solution was given in the query description itself. Due to lack of experience he came up with another version of above query based on the error message. SELECT * FROM [Sales].[SalesOrderHeader] HAVING ShipDate = MAX(ShipDate) GO When he ran above query it produced another error. Msg 8121, Level 16, State 1, Line 3 Column ‘Sales.SalesOrderHeader.ShipDate’ is invalid in the HAVING clause because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause. What he wanted actually was the SalesOrderHeader all the Sales shipped on the last day. Based on the problem statement what the right solution is as following, which does not generate error. SELECT * FROM [Sales].[SalesOrderHeader] WHERE ShipDate = (SELECT MAX(ShipDate) FROM [Sales].[SalesOrderHeader]) Well, that’s it! Very simple. With SQL Server there are always multiple solution to a single problem. Is there any other solution available to the problem stated? Please share in the comment. • No external network on ubuntu 9.10, though dns works..

  Hi, I have a weird problem I cant solve. I have several computers, two with xubuntu 9.10 One of them, acting as a media server, has stopped to work when it comes to external network.. I can do for example: ping google.com Which gives me an ip adress back, like: name@Media:/etc$ ping google.com PING google.com (66.102.9.147) 56(84) bytes of data. That tells me it reaches the dns?, but I get no response at all... If I ping a local computer all works fine. I can also reach the computer via ssh without any problems. I have always used network manager, but now I uninstalled it and made the settings manually like this: /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.52 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.1 Still no luck. I have no specific settings for this one in my router, and all the other computers, including my win laptop works fine. • How to generate customized sudoers files in puppet depending on the environment they're deployed to?

  the sysadmins are present in the sudoers files of all environments, but other sudoers are not. Different environments all have slightly different sudoers. Most of the time, 90% of users are the same, and 10% vary so we cannot have only one sudoers file for everything. Right now, we are using puppet with 10 different files with names like sudoers.production1, sudoers.production2, sudoers.production3, sudoers.testing1, sudoers.staging1 and so forth. Puppet then picks the file to deploy based on the server's $domain (ex: dbserver.staging1.acme.com) or $hardwaremodel. It works fine but it's a nightmare to maintain so many files. I'd like to autogenerate sudoers files based on the server's domain and have only one big file with all the sudoers permissions for all users and all environments. Something that looks like: User_Alias ADMINS = abe, bob, carol, dave case $domain { "staging1.acme.com" { #add dev1,dev2,tester1,tester2 to sudoers file } "testing2.acme.com" { #add tester1, tester3, tester4 to sudoers file } What's the best way to go about this? Suggestions for alternatives are welcome. I'd appreciate any tips. Update 1: For security reasons, we'd rather not concatenate a bunch of files from a folder located on a puppet client in case someone puts a file in there (maliciously or not) and either breaks the combined file or inserts something in it. Most importantly, for usability, we'd like to keep the number of sudoers related files (fragment or complete) on puppet server to either 3 (prod/stage/test) or preferably 1 file. this file would (somehow) generate sudoers files on the puppet server and send one customized file to each puppet client. The purpose of this would be only searching for a username in a single file and removing it quicker than doing it on 11 files. When adding a user to a bunch of environments, it won't be as quick, but only one file would need to be opened and looked at, greatly reducing the chances of an omission. our Sudo version is 1.6.9p8 so we can't use /sudoers.d folder, only a sudoers file.

• Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz Virus Impossible to get rid of?!

  Hi Guys I'm new to this forum so I'm unsure whether this is the right place for a question like this. I have a Trojan Horse infection that lives in memory and seems to be impossible to get rid of. I've tried a vew AntiVirus products (Norton, Windows Essentials & AVG Free) all to no avail & I've recently tried a few bootable antivirus solutions I found here: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/ Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2008 (failed - it wouldn't even load the UI, is there a newer one out there?) F Secure Rescue Disk (Updates & Scanner ran, found 10 infections, said it was going to delete or repair them, but didn't get rid of them) Avira found a load of infections but it froze when I tried to interact with the UI after the scan. Every time I run these I'll load Windows after & run AVG, and it still finds Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz (in Services.exe) & Trojan Horse Generic.16.ARSU (in svchost.exe) Is anyone familiar with a virus like this? Can anyone suggest how to approach a solution? Thanks Dave

  Question: What do I put in the foo.spec file so that the rpm's will remove the previous rpm before installing? Description: I have created a spec file that creates rpm's for a few packages that use the same source and provide the same service, each with a slightly different configuration. • Cannot connect on TFS 2012 server through SSL with invalid certificate

  I saw the problem on some forums and even here, but not as specific as mine. So here's the thing, So I've configured a TFS 2012 server, on one of my personnel server at home, and now, I'm trying to make it available through the internet, with the help of apache2 on a different UNIX based, physical server. The thing is working perfectly, I don't have any problem accessing the address https://tfs.something.com/tfs through my browser. The address can be pinged and I do have access to the TFS control panel through it. How does it work? Well, with apache2 you can set a virtual host and set up the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReserver setting, so the traffic can externally comes from a secure SSL connection, through a specified domain or sub-domain, but it can be locally redirect on a clear http session on a different port. This is my current setup. As I already said, I can access the web interface, but when I'm trying to connect with Visual Studio 2012, it can't be done. Here's the error I receive: http://i.imgur.com/TLQIn.png The technical information tells me: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. My SSL certificate is invalid and was automatically generated on my UNIX server. Even if I try to add it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities either on my TFS server or on my local workstation, it doesn't work. I still receive the same error. Is there's a way to completely ignore certificate validation? If not, what's have I done? I mean, I've added the certificate in the trusted root certificates, it should works as mentioned on some forums... If you need more information, please ask me, I'll be pleased to provide you more. • Migrating to CF9: trouble getting JRun working with SSL

  I have a client on MX7 who wants to migrate to CF9. I have a dev environment for them on my WinXP machine where I've configured MX7 to run with JRun's built-in web server. I've had that working for a long time with both regular and SSL connections. I installed CF9 yesterday side-by-side with the existing MX7 install to start testing. The install was smooth and detected MX7, adjusted CF9's port numbers for no conflict, etc. Testing started well: MX7 over regular and SSL still worked and CF9 worked over regular HTTP. But I can't get CF9 to work with SSL. I installed a new certificate with keytool, FireFox (v3.6) complained about it being unsigned, I added it to the exception list, and now I get this: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost:9101. Peer reports it experienced an internal error. (Error code: ssl_error_internal_error_alert) I've been Googling that in all variations but can't find much help to get past this. I don't see any info in any log files either. • Create a special folder within an outlook PST file

  Original question I have two problems caused by missing special folders. I added a second email address for which Outlook created a new PST file with an Inbox to which emails are successfully imported. But there is no Deleted Items folder. If I attempt to delete an unwanted email it is struck out. If move an email to a different PST file it is copied. I created a new PST file using Data File Management. This PST file has no Drafts folder. This is not important but I fail to see why I cannot have Drafts folder if I want. Any suggestions for solving these problems, particularly the first, gratefully received. Update Thanks to Ramhound and Dave Rook for their helpful responses to my original question. I assumed the problem of not have a Drafts folder in an Archive PST file and not having a Deleted Items folder associated with an Inbox were part of the same problem or I would not have mentioned the Drafts folder issue since I have an easy work-around. Perhaps my question should have been: How to I load emails from an IMAP account and be able to delete the spam?

• OpenLDAP Authentication UID vs CN issues

  I'm having trouble authenticating services using uid for authentication, which I thought was the standard method for authentication on the user. So basically, my users are added in ldap like this: # jsmith, Users, example.com dn: uid=jsmith,ou=Users,dc=example,dc=com uidNumber: 10003 loginShell: /bin/bash sn: Smith mail: [email protected] homeDirectory: /home/jsmith displayName: John Smith givenName: John uid: jsmith gecos: John Smith gidNumber: 10000 cn: John Smith title: System Administrator But when I try to authenticate using typical webapps or services like this: jsmith password I get: ldapsearch -x -h ldap.example.com -D "cn=jsmith,ou=Users,dc=example,dc=com" -W -b "dc=example,dc=com" Enter LDAP Password: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) But if I use: ldapsearch -x -h ldap.example.com -D "uid=jsmith,ou=Users,dc=example,dc=com" -W -b "dc=example,dc=com" It works. HOWEVER...most webapps and authentication methods seem to use another method. So on a webapp I'm using, unless I specify the user as: uid=smith,ou=users,dc=example,dc=com Nothing works. In the webapp I just need users to put: jsmith in the user field. Keep in mind my ldap is using the "new" cn=config method of storing settings. So if someone has an obvious ldif I'm missing please provide. Let me know if you need further info. This is openldap on ubuntu 12.04. Thanks, Dave

• BSOD during Cygwin install

  I have been running Cygwin (1.7.7) under Windows Vista 64-bit, SP2 for at least a year, and had no problems with my installation at all until today. When I tried to install apt-cyg, I realized that I needed to get the svn client. During the installation of the package dependencies, Vista threw a blue screen of death. I hoped this was a one-time occurrence, so I rebooted into Vista and tried to install svn again; same result. Next I completely removed Cygwin's directory, and all Cygwin registry entries; at this point, I tried reinstalling the base Cygwin system again. During the installation of bash, I got another BSOD: Apologies for the fuzzy pic, I had to shoot with my phone camera. I googled for BSOD and Cygwin and found a post by Dave Korn mentioning that the only reasons Cygwin should cause a BSOD is because of either ioperm.sys or some USB utilities. I have neither on my system. Every time I have tried reinstalling, Vista BSODs; I have not had problems installing any other software packages on this Vista machine. How can I get Cygwin installed again (without reinstalling Vista)?

I've had that working for a long time with both regular and SSL connections. I installed CF9 yesterday side-by-side with the existing MX7 install to start testing. The install was smooth and detected MX7, adjusted CF9's port numbers for no conflict, etc. Testing started well: MX7 over regular and SSL still worked and CF9 worked over regular HTTP. But I can't get CF9 to work with SSL. I installed a new certificate with keytool, FireFox (v3.6) complained about it being unsigned, I added it to the exception list, and now I get this: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost:9101. Peer reports it experienced an internal error. (Error code: ssl_error_internal_error_alert) I've been Googling that in all variations but can't find much help to get past this. I don't see any info in any log files either. • Cross-forest universal groups on Windows Server?

  I would like to create a Universal Group whose members are a mix of cross-forests users and groups. In the following example, two forests are mentioned (US and UK) and two domains in each forest (GeneralStaff and Java): For example, the universalDevelopers group may comprise of members from UK.Java.Developers and US.Java.Developers. Then, for example, there may be a group of universalSales which contains the users UK.GeneralStaff.John and US.GeneralStaff.Dave. In UK forest at the minute, I can freely add members and groups from the UK. But there is no way to add members from the US forest, despite having a two-way trust in place... e.g. I can login with US members into UK and vice-versa. A further complication is that, with a Universal group in the UK (which contains three domains), I can only add two of the three. It can't see the third. Could people please provide some thoughts on why cross-forest groups can't be created and ways of 'seeing' all domains within a forest. EDIT: This is on a combination of Windows 2003 and 2008 server. Answers can be regarding either. Thanks!

• Nginx Server Block Not Working? - Already running other vhosts just this one not working

  Im running a Debian 6 LEMP server with multiple virtual hosts and everything has been fine for 5 or so sites. But I've just tried adding another but for some reason it's just not working. By not working I mean in Chrome I get the "Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to subdomain.domain.net" error. I've changed the domain for security to subdomain.example.com and the IP is masked. Hosts file (I have multiple sub domains): xxx.xxx.xx.xxx *.example.com *.example Server Block: server { listen 80; server_name subdomain.example.com; access_log /srv/www/subdomain.example.com/logs/access.log; error_log /srv/www/subdomain.example.com/logs/error.log; root /srv/www/subdomain.example.com/public_html; location / { index index.html index.htm index.php; } location ~ \.php$ { include fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; } } I've created the system link to the file in the /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/ directory and restarted/reloaded nginx. • SanjayP&rsquo;s venture after Microsoft involves no Microsoft

  When I was at Microsoft, I always found Sanjay Parthasarathy to be a bright and passionate leader.  While he was a bit disconnected at times with what was really going on out in the trenches, I always thought he was true believer in what we in Developer Platform and Evangelism (DPE) were doing.  He got it.  He had started DPE and kicked a lot of doors down up in Redmond to make it happen.  Back in the early 2000s, battles over platform choices at large customers was trench warfare… bayonets and hand grenades at the P-Code level.  This model was not at all suited to Microsoft’s org structure at the time.  While there were plenty of people fully able to have competitive conversations around Windows Server, or AD, or Exchange, or the desktop, there weren’t many that could have deep technical conversations around Java vs .NET and the platform “stack” as a cohesive, unified unit of value.  This task fell to DPE. Sanjay ended up leaving Microsoft a number of months before me in 2009 and I remember thinking these exact words: “holy shit, SanjayP left Microsoft.”  When SanjayP left DPE years before that,  Sheila Gulati had stepped into his shoes and I thought we where starting to miss a beat.  Sheila had built an amazing business at Microsoft India, but I don’t recall being inspired by her as a leader.  SanjayP’s talks felt like the opening scene of “Patton” with George C. Scott pacing in front of the American flag.  Sheila was a voice on a con-call.  When she moved on in 2007, Walid Abu-Hadba was given the reigns.  Personally, I don’t ever recall even seeing his face.  I think I might recall hearing his voice on some con-calls, but for all intents and purposes he was invisible to me.  Perhaps this was the beginning of my carelessness around seeking “visibility.” Fast forward to Build 2011.  First off, we have no PDC – we have Build.  Microsoft had made an 11 year investment by this time in building an organization to make its technology relevant to developers.  One would think such an org would be in the driver’s seat of such an event, but we see Windows product group people on the podiums.  Watching, I could see the messaging unfold… but no story.  It was like the old days.  Demos and PowerPoints by team members building the tech, and in many cases VPs.  The ensuing confusion is almost legendary now.  Windows 8 was, and is, a pretty big deal… but who is telling the story – not just features and benefits, but the story around how it all fits together. Having been out of Microsoft for two years now, and looking in, I can only conclude that the “DPE of old” has at best been emasculated, and at worst been completely marginalized by internal politics, or perhaps the eternal march of the corporate entropy generator that resides at all large companies.  I don’t think this is a good thing for anyone. And now, back to Sanjay who is the father of Microsoft DPE… I noticed that he has moved back to India and is doing start-up work.  His current company Indix looks to be doing some interesting things with “big data” and here’s their stack: Nary a trace of anything Microsoft.  What could account for this?  I wonder….  Better availability of labor and expertise in India for this stack?  Donno, but even in India, leet R and Hadoop skills have to be hard to find. Technical superiority?  This, I sincerely doubt. This stack, with SanjayP’s name as CEO leaves me with an unsettling feeling.  If he did believe, he no longer does.  One doesn’t place bets with real money on things they don’t believe in.  Perhaps he never did believe, and was a corporate creature seeking to find a niche for himself after which he manipulated me and others.  Or perhaps… anger… be it passive aggression or an outright “in your face F*** you” to his former masters. I guess in the end, only he knows the true reason… But I have my theory...

• Highlights from the Oracle Customer Experience Summit @ OpenWorld

  A guest post by David Vap, Group Vice President, Oracle Applications Product Development The Oracle Customer Experience Summit was the first-ever event covering the full breadth of Oracle's CX portfolio -- Marketing, Sales, Commerce, and Service. The purpose of the Summit was to articulate the customer experience imperative and to showcase the suite of Oracle products that can help our customers create the best possible customer experience. This topic has always been a very important one, but now that there are so many alternative companies to do business with and because people have such public ways to voice their displeasure, it's necessary for vendors to have multiple listening posts in place to gauge consumer sentiment. They need to know what is going on in real time and be able to react quickly to turn negative situations into positive ones. Those can then be shared in a social manner to enhance the brand and turn the customer into a repeat customer. The Summit was focused on Oracle's portfolio of products and entirely dedicated to customers who are committed to building great customer experiences within their businesses. Rather than DBAs, the attendees were business people looking to collaborate with other like-minded experts and find out how Oracle can help in terms of technology, best practices, and expertise. The event was at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco as part of Oracle OpenWorld. We had eight hundred people attend, which was great for the first year. Next year, there's no doubt in my mind, we can raise that number to 5,000. Alignment and Logic Oracle's Customer Experience portfolio is made up of a combination of acquired and organic products owned by many people who are new to Oracle. We include homegrown Fusion CRM, as well as RightNow, Inquira, OPA, Vitrue, ATG, Endeca, and many others. The attendees knew of the acquisitions, so naturally they wanted to see how the products all fit together and hear the logic behind the portfolio. To tell them about our alignment, we needed to be aligned. To accomplish that, a cross functional team at Oracle agreed on the messaging so that every single Oracle presenter could cover the big picture before going deep into a product or topic. Talking about the full suite of products in one session produced overflow value for other products. And even though this internal coordination was a huge effort, everyone saw the value for our customers and for our long-term cooperation and success. Keynotes, Workshops, and Tents of Innovation We scored by having Seth Godin as our keynote speaker ? always provocative and popular. The opening keynote was a session orchestrated by Mark Hurd, Anthony Lye, and me. Mark set the stage by giving real-world examples of bad customer experiences, Anthony clearly articulated the business imperative for addressing these experiences, and I brought it all to life by taking the audience around the Customer Lifecycle and showing demos and videos, with partners included at each of the stops around the lifecycle. Brian Curran, a VP for RightNow Product Strategy, presented a session that was in high demand called The Economics of Customer Experience. People loved hearing how to build a business case and justify the cost of building a better customer experience. John Kembel, another VP for RightNow Product Strategy, held a workshop that customers raved about. It was based on the journey mapping methodology he created, which is a way to talk to customers about where they want to make improvements to their customers' experiences. He divided the audience into groups led by facilitators. Each person had the opportunity to engage with experts and peers and construct some real takeaways. During the day we served lunch in the tents and partners showed their different innovative ideas. It was very interesting to see all the technologies and advancements. It also gave people a place to mix and mingle and to think about the fringe of where we could all take these ideas. Product Portfolio Plus Thought Leadership Of course there is always room for improvement, but the feedback on the format of the conference was positive. Ninety percent of the sessions had either a partner or a customer teamed with an Oracle presenter. The presentations weren't dry, one-way information dumps, but more interactive. I just followed up with a CEO who attended the conference with his Head of Marketing. He told me that they are using John Kembel's journey mapping methodology across the organization to pull people together. This sort of thought leadership in these highly competitive areas gives Oracle permission to engage around the technology. We have to differentiate ourselves and it's harder to do on the product side because everyone looks the same on paper. But on thought leadership ? we can, and did, take some really big steps. He explained, "You know what they say, the first time doesn't count, the second time is a habit and the third time it's a tradition!" He mentioned that he was thrilled that this is largest JavaOne in Brazil to date, and he wants next year to be larger. He said that Oracle knows Latin America is an important hub for development.  "We continually come back to Latin America because of the dedication the community has with driving the continued innovation for Java," he said. Stahl explained that Oracle and the Java community must continue to innovate and Make the Future Java together. The success of Java depends on three important factors: technological innovation, Oracle as a strong steward of Java, and community participation. "The Latin American Java Community (especially in Brazil) is a shining example of how to be positive contributor to Java," Stahl said. Next, George Saab, VP software dev, Java Platform Group at Oracle, discussed some of the recent and upcoming changes to Java. "In addition to the incremental improvements to Java 7, we have also increased the set of platforms supported by Oracle from Linux, Windows, and Solaris to now also include Mac OS X and Linux/ARM for ARM-based PCs such as the Raspberry Pi and emerging ARM based microservers."  Saab announced that EA builds for Linux ARM Hard Float ABI will be available by the end of the year.  Staffan Friberg, Product Manager, Java Platform Group, provided an overview of some of the language coming in Java 8, including Lambda, remove of PermGen, improved data and time APIs and improved security, Java 8 development is moving along. He reminded the audience that they can go to OpenJDK to see this development being done in real-time, and that there are weekly early access builds of OracleJDK 8 that developers can download and try today. Judson Althoff, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Alliances and Channels and Embedded Sales, was invited to the stage, and the audience was told that "even though he is wearing a suit, he is still pretty technical." Althoff started off with a bang: "The Internet of Things is on a collision course with big data and this is a huge opportunity for developers."  For example, Althoff said, today cars are more a data device than a mechanical device. A car embedded with sensors for fuel efficiency, temperature, tire pressure, etc. can generate a petabyte of data A DAY. There are similar examples in healthcare (patient monitoring and privacy requirements creates a complex data problem) and transportation management (sending a package around the world with sensors for humidity, temperature and light). Althoff then brought on stage representatives from three companies that are successful with Java today, first Axel Hansmann, VP Strategy & Marketing Communications, Cinterion. Mr. Hansmann explained that Cinterion, a market leader in Latin America, enables M2M services with Java. At JavaOne San Francisco, Cinterion launched the EHS5, the smallest 3g solderable module, with Java installed on it. This provides Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with a cost effective, flexible platform for bringing advanced M2M technology to market.Next, Steve Nelson, Director of Marketing for the Americas, at Freescale explained that Freescale is #1 in Embedded Processors in Wired and Wireless Communications, and #1 in Automotive Semiconductors in the Americas. He said that Java provides a mature, proven platform that is uniquely suited to meet the requirements of almost any type of embedded device. He encouraged University students to get involved in the Freescale Cup, a global competition where student teams build, program, and race a model car around a track for speed.Roberto Franco, SBTVD Forum President, SBTVD, talked about Ginga, a Java-based standard for television in Brazil. He said there are 4 million Ginga TV sets in Brazil, and they expect over 20 million TV sets to be sold by the end of 2014. Ginga is also being adopted in other 11 countries in Latin America. Ginga brings interactive services not only at TV set, but also on other devices such as tablets,  PCs or smartphones, as the main or second screen. "Interactive services is already a reality," he said, ' but in a near future, we foresee interactivity enhanced TV content, convergence with OTT services and a big participation from the audience,  all integrated on TV, tablets, smartphones and second screen devices."Before he left the stage, Nandini Ramani thanked Judson for being part of the Java community and invited him to the next Geek Bike Ride in Brazil. She presented him an official geek bike ride jersey.For the Technical Keynote, a "blue screen of death" appeared. With mock concern, Stephin Chin asked the rest of the presenters if they could go on without slides. What followed was a interesting collection of demos, including JavaFX on a tablet, a look at Project Easel in NetBeans, and even Simon Ritter controlling legos with his brainwaves! • MinGW/G++/g95 link problem - libf95 undefined reference to `MAIN_'

  Hi folks, Summing up, my problem consists on compiling g95 objects inside a C++ application. Actually, I'm constructing an interface for an old fortran program. For this task, I'm using the wxWidgets GUI library, and calling fortran subroutines when necessary. At the beginning, I was developing the entire project compiling my fortran files with gfortran (which comes with GCC) and linking them with my app by the g++ -o... command. Everything was working fine but some numbers values calculated by my fotran subroutines returned NAN values. Doing some research, I realized that compiling my fortran files with gfortran with the -m32 flag, generates this NAN values problem. Although compiling with -m64 flag, my code works properly well. The only trouble here is that my App should be 32bits and then I tryed another compiller. Here I found g95 Fortran compiler, which compiles my fortran code and gives the right output on a 32bits environment. Finishing, I don't have a main method implemented because this is managed by wxWidgets, and my fortran subroutines can not have a main function because this is a C++ program calling fortran functions. Can some of you guys help me with this problem? How can I fix this undefined reference to MAIN__ problem? Any idea will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, George

• Writing reports with Perl

  Hi, I am trying to write out multiple report files using perl. Each file has the same structure, but with different data. Set report to use these and print items to $rep } #end code The above is just a high level of the code I am using and I hope I have captured all the salient points. However, for some reason, I get the first report file output correctly. The second file instead of having in the first section test next item last item reads last item last item last item I have tried a whole lot of options primarily around autoflush, but, for the life of me can't figure out why it is doing this. I am using Perl 5.8.2. Any help/pointers much appreciated. Thanks George

  I am using the following jQuery var etag='kate' if (etag.length > 0) { $('div').each(function () { $(this).find('ul:not(:contains(' + etag + '))').hide(); $(this).find('ul:contains(' + etag + ')').show(); }); }? towards the following HTML <div id="2"> <ul> <li>john</li> <li>jack</li> </ul> <ul> <li>kate</li> <li>clair</li> </ul> <ul> <li>hugo</li> <li>desmond</li> </ul> <ul> <li>said</li> <li>jacob</li> </ul> </div> <div id="3"> <ul> <li>jacob</li> <li>me</li> </ul> <ul> <li>desmond</li> <li>george</li> </ul> <ul> <li>allen</li> <li>kate</li> </ul> <ul> <li>salkldf</li> <li>3kl44</li> </ul> </div> basically, as long as etag has one word, the code works perfectly and hides those elements who do not contain etag. My problem is, when etag is multiple words (and I don't have control over it. Its coming from a database and could be combination of multiple words seperated with space char) then the code does not work.. is there any way to achieve this?
