• Secondary drive corrupted/not reading

  When I connect my Seagate Barracuda to the computer, it shows up on the list of drives in Windows Explorer, but right clicking on it crashes Windows Explorer, opening it won't do anything, and I cannot start disk manager when it is connected. Trying to search the drive also freezes Windows Explorer. I have tried to run CHKDSK on it, and it was "unable to read $J data stream" for the Usn Journal. Also, it was an internal drive, but I pulled it out and hooked it up externally so I could test if it was that drive causing the problems. Is there any way for me to copy the files off of the drive?

• How to run a shell script before restarting a service in Monit in case of a crash

  I am using Monit 5.3.2 in my Linux box. I am monitoring some services using Monit. I want to run a script before the running the restart command. I have used the below conditions for the same. if does not exist for 2 times within 3 cycles then exec "/bin/bash -c 'touch /tmp/somefile'" as uid someuser and gid someuser if does not exist for 10 cycles then restart Unfortunately only the restart action is getting executed. Can anyone please help me to identify why the first rule is not executed ? Is there are any other way to solve the problem ?

• Centos iptables blocks after reboot

  I have a Centos5 installation with kvm on my server. I am using nat portforwarding to ssh my virtual machines. I have several iptables rules and saved then in /etc/sysconfig/iptables. After reboot, I see all these rules when I type service iptables status but I am getting a connection refused error. After typing service iptables restart everything works. I don't understand, why do I need to restart iptables again? Doesn't it restart on reboot?

• Windows SBS 2011 DNS Role (service) failing & needing restarting

  Have a Windows SBS 2011 with Exchange that is handling all DNS for the network. Since getting a 3rd party (Hardware & Support) to setup a recieving FTP service and restricting Exchanges memory useage for another 3rd party product (Stock software) the local network seems to periodically 'lose the internet connection'. Delving deeper I found that the DNS service is somehow failing/stopping without the actual service on the server reporting such (nothing in event logs). A simple restart of the 'DNS Role' on the server solves the problem. The manager onsite reports that he has to do this most days in the afternoon - yet not at the same time and other days it works fine without a restart being required. I'm unable (lacking sufficient SBS2011 knowledge) to diagnose this further, ideally I would like the DNS Role to report (and log) the failure, then automatically restart itself.

• HDD is not recognized/initialized via USB, only via SATA - is a reformat through USB a bad idea?

  I have a 4TB Hitachi HDD that I purchased in Europe (I use it as a backup disk); I use Windows 7. When I connect it to a SATA port, it is recognized in Windows Explorer and gives no problems, even after transferring 3TB at a time or after being on for days. When I connect it via a SATA-to-USB2.0 adapter, it is also recognized, but when I transfer a large amount of data, it will intermittently stop being recognized by Windows Explorer and cancel the transfer. When I connect it via an external enclosure (which is technically a SATA-to-USB3.0 adapter), it does not display at all in Windows Explorer, but Disk Management will show the drive, albeit uninitialized (prompts for format). I only got the external enclosure because I want to backup my files more conveniently (instead of having to open the computer case each time). Do you advise against reformat/initialization via the external enclosure? Can it screw up things in an irrevocable way (Master Boot Record etc.)?

  I would like to understand some fundamental VS version differences, What is the difference between Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Does the Team System 2008 include VS2008, TFS 2008 & Team Explorer 2008? Furthermore, what is the difference betwene Team System 2008 and Team Suite 2008? I beleive there are no more Team Suites or Team Systems in 2010? Does Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 include all Team System components, like TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010, so in effect it is like an upgrade of Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Or does TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010 need to be installed separately?

• Setting up a static IP address (public) in Ubuntu

  I have a business class internet connection and need to setup a static ip address for a machine. I did a search online and only find how to setup static local ip addresses (like 192.168..). I tried the same technique, and only setup the ip address and netmask, but after restart networking the computer could not connect to the outside world. This is what I did: 1) edit /etc/network/interfaces iface eth0 inet static address 173.10.xxx.xx netmask 255.255.255.252 2) edit /etc/resolv.conf search wp.comcast.net nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx 3) restart network sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart Now the last step didn't report error, ifconfig shows the ip address was set, but this server cannot connect to outside world, ping google.com and reports "unknown host google.com". Any ideas?

• NEC MultiSync Resolution Problem

  I have a slightly odd issue with my monitor, an NEC MultiSync LCD1970NXp. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop, and according to Windows Update I have the latest drivers. When I restart the laptop on the docking station at work with the monitor attached, it runs under 1024x800, but the optimum resolution for the monitor is 1280x1024, which isn't an available resolution in the Windows Screen Resolution dialog. If I restart the laptop undocked e.g. at home, it goes to 1280x1024, which is the resolution of the laptop screen. If I subsequently hibernate it and then wake it up on the docking station, the monitor then quite happily displays at 1280x1024. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be, or a method by which I can restart on the docking station and still get 1280x1024.

• Detecting/Reactivating serial port that becomes inactive on Ubuntu Linux 10.10

  I am using a usb2serial port to communicate with some old equipment (using my code built upon the boost asio library - I think my code is fine because it works almost all of the time). Every so often (maybe once every few days) the communication stops with my device with no error at all - the device just does not respond. I then restart my computer and everything is fine again. Does anyone know where I can start to analyse this problem? My serial port loads up fine (in /dev/ttyUSB0) and the boost library does not throw an error. The device just does not respond. If I restart the device no change - only when I restart my pc does it make a difference. I have also tried unplugging and replugging the usb connector. Does anyone know what gets cleared in the reboot (w.r.t the serial device) or what I can probe when the problem happens again (rather than just restarting with hope)

  Hi, I have a web server ( IIS 7.5 , windows 2008 64 Bit web server ed) and notice that in last few days all web sites on server stopped and cant browser by visitor. I check the event log but I didnt see any things related to this problem. When I try to restart IIS i got error on W3SVC serivce.When IIS try to STOP it, W3SVC goes to stopping state and never stop. so I can't start it again. I try and find that I never can restart the W3SVC and when IIS work fine if I try to restart this service, it goes to stopping and never stop. 1- how can I find the problem on IIS? • How to rename database without first stopping SQL instance to flush connections

  Is there a way to force a database into single user mode so a script can be run to rename databases? I find I have to Restart the instance of SQL (to force off any connections from a web app, etc.) and then I can run this script: USE master go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", true go sp_dboption StagingMDS, "single user", true go sp_renamedb MDS, LastMonthMDS go sp_renamedb StagingMDS, MDS go sp_dboption LastMonthMDS, "single user", false go sp_dboption MDS, "single user", false go After this script runs, I can restart IIS for my web app and it can connect to the new production database. All the above works well and we've been doing this for years but now we've upgraded to SQL 2008 and the SQL2008 instance also hosts other databases that support other web apps. So, rather than using a Restart of the whole SQL instance to enable subsequent single-user mode on 2 databases, is there a less intrusive way of accomplishing this? Thanks.

  Hi! It makes sense, and is in fact suggested on this site, to have a critical file change trigger a service restart with puppet meta-parameters (such as notify or subscribe). For example: ## file definition for printers.conf file { "/etc/cups/printers.conf": [snip], source => "puppet:///module/etc/cups/printers.conf" } ## service definition for sshd service { 'cups': ensure => running, subscribe => File['/etc/cups/printers.conf'] } But in the case of CUPS, this triggers and endless loop of restarts; the logic works like this: Change puppetmaster's version of /etc/cups/printers.conf puppetmaster pushes new version to client, triggering cups restart cupsd restart insists on putting its own time stamp at the top of printers.conf, 'Written by cupsd...' This change will be seen as out of date, so after runinterval, we return to (1). Is there a way to suppress cupsd's need to time stamp the file? Or is there a puppet trick that could help here? • Troubleshooting a crash with Windows 7

  I have a folder with several thousand videos (All .MPG extensions). When I open the folder with these videos, it shows up fine, but as I start scrolling down, it crashes the Windows Explorer. I removed the Length column and it was still crashing. I then removed the Date column and the problem disappeared. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem or at least identifying the file that's causing the issue.

  I've just the following commands on Ubuntu 10.04 in order to enable cron logs. But I still don't see the file /var/logs/cron. 1. Edit /etc/syslog.conf and uncomment the line starting with cron.* 2. sudo /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart 3. sudo /etc/init.d/cron restart (I've also tried sudo service cron restart). What am i missing to do ? Also, I would like to know how can I run cron manually and not just start the service. thanks

• Writing to external drive runs out of space prematurely

  I have a USB 2.0, 500 GB HDD. I am writing a bunch of data to it, that I previously recovered from the drive. I have formatted the drive in exFAT, since the drive will be used with Windows and OSX. At first, I tried using Windows explorer to move the files over to the drive (about 160 GiB worth) but after copying about 30% of the data (according to TeraCopy), Windows Explorer reported the drive as out of space, and that it was completely full. WinDirStat only showed the size of data that had been copied over... Where did this extra space go? Why is there a 300+ GiB discrepancy between the usage reported by the files and what Explorer sees?

  i have one windows 2008 server & windows xp clients. one HP2600n is connected to network with network cable, and installed in server and shared. also same printer is shared on xp cleints. the problem is: once cleints send print it come to the server que and stuck there untill we manually restart printer spooler service. once we restart the service all the prints in QUE prints and after that new prints again stuck in QUE till next manually restart. how can we solve this problem? • VMware - Broadcom 1000Gbps NIC does not link at 100Mbps to a Cisco switch port

  Today we've stumbled on a very awkward situation with our VMWare Server. The server is with ESX 3.5 that has a 1Gbps NIC. We bought a brand new managed Cisco Linksys switch with 10/100Mbps interface ports but when we plugged the cable in one of the ports the link simply does not wanted to activate :S... Does anyone with more VMware experience have ever had similar problem? From what I know is that 1Gbps NICs are backwards compatible with 100Mbps switches. I am starting to go nuts :@

• Create/rename a file/folder that begins with a dot in Windows?

  Many programs needs folder names that starts with a dot, like .emacs.d, .gimp-2.2, .jedit etc. How do I create such a folder? When using the Windows Explorer in Windows 2000 (and other versions), I get an error message saying "You have to enter a filename". The only solution I have come up with, is to open a command prompt (Start, Run, "CMD", OK) and enter "mkdir .mydir". Why have Microsoft this error message in the Explorer, but not in the command shell? Is there any registry hack out there to fix this, so that I am able to enter the folder name directly in the Explorer?

  Im Running on Centos, the trouble is when i restart my server i need to start my apache and varnish service I use this to start both of them service httpd restart && service varnish restart But i would likw both of them to start when i reboot the server I read i could use this chkconfig httpd on But this is only for apache could i do this chkconfig varnish on Finally when i do y usual start of httpd , i am asked for my api key for SSL , am i able to incorporate this into resarting both varnish and httpd on start up. Or am i doomed to run this command everytime i resart

• Altering the Windows 7 grouping thumbnail preview

  I like the windows 7 grouping behaviour for multiple similar windows, except when I have multiple Explorer windows open. In this case, showing thumbnails of each open explorer window is next to useless, and I would like to know how to either: Disable thumbnail display completely (but preserve the grouping behaviour) Disable thumbnail display for a subset of programs (all explorer.exe instances) Change the number of similar programs that are open before the grouping behaviour falls back on a more sensible text preview when hovering over the taskbar icon (currently 14 or over) I don't particularly want to disable any other features of windows to get this behaviour, so disabling the theme compleletely isn't what I want to do. I definitely want to keep the grouping behaviour. Its just those thumbnail previews I would like to alter.   I need a way to automate the following process in Windows 7: Open an .html file in Internet Explorer Print to PDF Save the PDF with a patterned file name (i.e., original_name_YYYY-MM-DD.pdf) Ideally, I could drag and drop several files or open a whole folder of files at once and a PDF would be created for each one. A command line solution is also acceptable. The files have to be opened in the browser because parts of the page are rendered with JavaScript on page load. In other words, if you simply right-click on the file in Explorer and choose "print", the resulting file is not the same because the JS didn't run. If it helps, Internet Explorer can be set as the default browser, and a PDF printer can be set as the default printer.

• init.d service died

  Adapting some code from a linux forum, I've added a service script to /etc/init.d on my ubuntu natty server to start/stop/restart node.js It literally was working the first day I made it, but then today, after viewing my website this morning, the server threw a 404, and upon further inspection, the node.js process was gone. So I went to start the service again, only this time, node.js didn't start at all, and ever since I haven't been able to get my service script working. • Eclipse style autohotkey commands

  Is autohotkey capable of interpreting hotkeys in the style of Ctrl + Shift + W, W? I would assume a script like the following would work: ^+W:: ; Windows hotkeys (Ctrl + Shift + W) O:: Run Outlook ; Subsequent 'o' pressed => Run outlook E:: Run Explorer ; return From the documentation I note that these are called vertically stacked hotkeys and cause each line to perform the same action. In the case above, I think Ctrl+Shift+W and o will both cause outlook to be launched, whereas pressing e would cause explorer to be launched. What I would like is Ctrl+Shift+W, O runs outlook and Ctrl+Shift+W, e runs windows explorer. Is there any way to cause a hotkey to perform context specific actions (much like in Eclipse), where I can press Ctrl+Shift+W to activate a block of specific hotkeys?

• Explaining svn / apache permissions error? (I know "how" but not "why")

  I have the following error occurring on occasion when trying to do an svn switch (have it set up to do via a web request): svn: Can't open file '/root/.subversion/servers': Permission denied This happens after an apache httpd.conf change and corresponding restart. How to fix this? I can get it to fix by doing an apache restart - BUT, it often takes multiple tries. Curious if anybody can explain this. Why did this error go away on my 8th apache restart, but not on the prior ones (with no edits to the conf file)? Basically, I kind of have a "how" in terms of solving this, but I don't have a "why" . . . Thanks!
