• Compilable modern alternatives to C/C++

  I am considering writing a new software product. Performance will be critical, so I am wary of using an interpreted or language or one that uses a emulation layer (read java). Which leads me to thinking of using C (or C++) however these are both rather long in the tooth. I haven't used either for a long time. I figure in the last 20 years someone should have created something which is reasonably popular and is nice to code in and is complied. What more modern alternatives are there to C for writing high performance code compiled code? edit in response to comments If C++ is a different beast than it was 15 years ago, I would consider it, I guess I had an assumption that it had some inherent problems. Parallelisation would be important, but probably not across multiple machines.

• Finding Telecommuting Opportunities as a Recent College Graduate

  Reading the answers to hiring practices of remote vs. local employees and freelance programming sites, I would like to add this question to the mix. I am a recent college graduate from an electrical engineering background with 2 years worth of work terms in programming (C, C++, VBA, Matlab, etc.) while I was still in school. While I am interested in learning other software tools (such as Python, Ruby on Rails, Javascript, etc.), I want to use the tools I have now in a telecommuting role while I grow my toolset. Despite having 2 years of work experience (and I've lost track of when I have started programming), my status as a recent college graduate may be an obstacle of my credibility to compete for telecommuting (or in fact any) programming opportunities. I don't know how I can go about finding telecommute programming opportunities for someone with my situation. Overall, many of previous places I've worked at liked my work. What are your suggestions? • I'm having trouble learning

  I'm only 13 but i'm genuinely interested in CS and would really like it if I could actually accomplish it. I've read books on C++ and C#, but ALL of them are the same!! They all say "Ok so since you have no prior knowledge in this what so ever, write a snippet that will do this and then make a GUI and then throw it into the Priafdhsu hfad then add the program and then program your own compiler to do some stuff". It's really getting annoying. I've payed near $40 (via Paypal) on ebooks that supposedly taught people to program with no prior knowledge. ALL OF THEM EXPECT ME TO ALREADY KNOW THE LANGUAGE. Is there something that I'm missing or am I suppose to be born with the property of CS? I would very much appreciate it if someone could explain this to me or possibly refer me to a tutorial on Programming Theory that starts from below ground zero as I have know knowledge in CS at all.

• MacBook Pro (5) touchpad stops working after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04, my MacBook Pro's touchpad stopped working. It works fine on the login screen, but after logging in it stops working. (Answering my own question, in the hope that it saves someone else a bit of head scratching. I'm a new user, so couldn't answer in a separate post for the next few hours). After the upgrade, your Gnome desktop configuration may have gone awry. There are a few settings which enable or disable the touchpad in certain contexts which may need tweaking to get the touchpad working again. Here's how I got mine working again: Hit Alt-F2, and run 'gconf-editor' Navigate to desktop-gnome-peripherals Ensure that peripherals-touchpad:touchpad is enabled. Ensure that peripherals-bcm5974:disable_while_other_device_exists is disabled. 'bcm5974' is probably specific to my MacBook Pro's hardware, so you may need to search around for variable disable_while_other_device_exists under the entries listed under peripherals. HTH

• Copying and pasting files. Nothing new here

  I installed XBMC and it's working beautifully. I have my own skin I'd like to use and all I should have to do is copy and past my skin.folder into the addons folder and I'm down. However, this isn't so easy with Ubuntu. I have the latest version, installed today 11-14-2012 Could someone please spell out the command process to make this happen? I've read through so many forums, tried ssh, I know now I'm getting into things that could be dangerous so any help would be much appreciated. • Photoshop, slice, Dreamweaver, web?

  So I am playing around with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I have created a site layout, and have used the slice function on it. Next, I saved as html & images. In Dreamweaver, I open such html file and I fill the page with content, links, etc. I have a website and everything, and I would like to use my newly created html page on it. But, obviously, if I copy & paste the html to my website it won't work because it will lack the images. But two things: I can't find the images, and apparently they are a lot. I am sure I am doing a great mistake regarding the images. Can someone help me?

• Job Search Engine Url Structure Issue [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the best stucture of SEO friendly URL? I am working on a job board, and i'm trying to figure out a good design for URL structure. Some things that I have found through research: 100 - 150 Chars long is ideal 3-5 words in your url, according to Matt Cutts Use .htaccess to force clean urls Do not duplicate data (important) Clean and precise, describing the content Use hyphens On the homepage, I try to detect the users location based on IP, but this isn't always accurate, and not always reliable. So until they put in their city/location, I can't always use this structure but this is potentially work-able. For Searching, a form post to a results page: domain.com/jobs/[city]/[search] ie: domain.com/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ OR domain.com/search/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ or do I remove the word JOBS and just use Search. I trying to keep good search terms in the URL, but also keep it clean and concise. Can someone give me some feedback and thoughts to 'why'...

• Multiple Monitors using nvidia-prime or bumblebee on Ubuntu 13.10

  I've been unable to get multiple monitors to work with Ubuntu 13.10 using nvidia-prime or bumblebee. Could someone point me in the right direction? With nvidia-prime, I've tried the xorg.conf here http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.12/README/randr14.html, but I boot into "low graphics" mode and have to revert to get a desktop back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: I've given up on nvidia-prime; I missed the fact that it never turns off the discrete card... So, I'm back to trying to get VIRTUAL displays working with Bumblebee.

• Ubuntu 12.04 desktop crash [closed]

  12.04 is stable under a light load, but not under intensive use of Gaussian 09 vB1. Looks like a heating issue, but psensor says that all is well on 32-cores @56C. Similar results for 64 cores. Machine shuts down after 2-3h. Syslog shows shut down. Whoopsie crash reporter sends in report. After 259 updates on the weekend, I am left wondering what the heck is wrong with this release? My answer would be "EVERYTHING!". Can someone help me do some systematic checks on this OS and hardware.

• Is having your own website important?

  How necessary or important is it? I try to keep a running list of blogs or sites to follow, but a lot of the time I pull up someone's profile and notice there isn't anything there. Is it really important? I understand are different levels of programming (from C/C++ system programmers to Rails and even Haskell and J) and not everyone works in a language easily worked with for web based applications. Not everything is web-centric, however with the advent of many popular and sometimes free services I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a majority of programmers to have a personal site.

That means, most people in the team should work on different parts of the system at different times so that everyone has an understanding of it. Now it is impssible that everyone has an expert level of understanding of each part of the system. That's because people are urged to specialize in one area of expertise. If you are an expert database admin, what's the point of working on the user interface of the system when you switch pairs? You will not be able to do such a high quality job as someone who has extensive experience in UI design. How can you increase the bus factor and make sure that you have specialization in your team?

I'm a decent artiest (I will have some of my work bellow) I know the base of C++ but I really would like to get into OpenGL. I have a pretty good familiarity with the main concepts: web app framework, modeling, queues, memcache, django templates, etc. Where I think I'm lacking is in methodology. Architecting the app, using git for versioning, designing an writing unit tests. I'm totally convinced to incorporate these practices in my development style, and have started reading up on them. However I've learned that I'm a much faster learner when I have someone experienced to ask questions to and interact with. IRC channels and forums like stack overflow are great. But sometimes you want something more dynamic that produces results faster. So my question is how can a person find an experienced engineer that is familiar with the technologies he uses and that is willing to give them a couple of hours of Skype coaching sessions per week in return for an hourly fee...

• How to disable the auto resizing of Windows when you touch the top or bottom

  Can someone tell me how to stop the autoresizing behavior of Windows in Ubuntu 14.04 when you touch the top or bottom when resizing the window. There is an undesirable effect of the the bottom resizing all the way to the bottom when you only want to resize the top, or vice-versa. In the past it was possible to disable this effect by unchecking grid in CCSM. Then came Unity Tweak tool which made it easy to remove. You could remove it by turning off Window snapping and Hotcorners. Now in Ubuntu 14.04 I have all those feature turned off and yet I can't resize only the top or only the bottom without the other end automatically moving.

• Importing 3d model with multiple skeletons

  I have created an animated butterfly in 3ds Max and try to export it in ".fbx" format to use in XNA, however as soon as I compile, i get the following Errors: Warning 1 Multiple skeletons were found in the file. The first skeleton, named "Left.Wing" has been moved to be a child of the scene root. The other, "Right.Wing", will be ignored. Fragment identifier "Right.Wing". Error 2 Vertex is bound to bone "Right.Wing", but this bone is not present in the skeleton. Which is confusing since I have the bone Right.Wing . . and I use it to animate the butterfly I have seen a few possible solution for Blender but none for 3Ds max it would be really helpful if someone could help me out with this

• The practical cost of swapping effects

  Hello, I use XNA for my projects and on those forums I sometimes see references to the fact that swapping an effect for a mesh has a relatively high cost, which surprises me as I thought to swap an effect was simply a case of copying the replacement shader program to the GPU along with appropriate parameters. I wondered if someone could explain exactly what is costly about this process? And put, if possible, 'relatively' into context? For example say I wanted to use a short shader to help with picking, I would: Change the effect on every object, calculting a unique color to identify it and providing it to the shader. Draw all the objects to a render target in memory. Get the color from the target and use it to look up the selected object. What portion of the total time taken to complete that process would be spent swapping the shaders? My instincts would say that rendering the scene again, no matter how simple the shader, would be an order of magnitude slower than any other part of the process so why all the concern over effects?

• Are there any examples of a temporal field/object updater?

  The system in question has numerous examples of temporal objects and fields--ones which are a certain variable at a certain point in time. An example of this would be someone's rate of pay--there are different answers depending on when you ask and what the constraints might be; eg, can there ever be more than one of a certain temporal object concurrently, etc. Ideally, there would be an object that handles those constraints when a new state/stateful object is introduced; when a new value is set, it would prevent creating negative ranges and overlaps. Martin Fowler has written some great material on this (such as this description of Temporal Objects) , but what I've found of it tends to be entirely theoretic, with no concrete implementations. PHP is the target language, but examples in any language would be most helpful.

• How do I install the Intel Graphics driver in my system?

  Can someone help me out and explain or point me in the right direction on how to check video drivers and see if my video card running okay? I had 10.04 installed on my Thinkpad r61 with Compiz Manager and life was great, until the machine took water damage. I bought an ASUS (X54H) since and am trying out 12.04, but the desktop just doesn't look right. I always struggled with video driver installation. There are no proprietary drivers available in the hardware manager. When I run lspci | grep VGA: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) I will greatly appreciate your help. I want to use Linux more, but like I said video drivers appear to be my biggest concern. I have also tried 12.04 on my desktop PC, but again failed to configure video card, so switched back to Windows 7.

• is it possible to make nautilus open with two panes by default?

  Other than usign xdotool to send F3 to nautilus when it starts. (which is a solution..) I'm wondering if anything new as been included in the nautilus codebase that enable it in preferences to open up dual paned by default. I really liked total commander when using windows.. and other than to running it in wine, i haven't found any other more linux native way to manage more intuitively files and folders. (in a gui context) Having two panes open up that remember where i was prior to closing nautilus would be awesome if someone knows how enable it..

• What is the root of my application?

  Can someone help me understand what is the root of my application? I would like to use vim and create a one line procfile in the root of my application. Then I can test the procfile using a gem called foreman with the following command in my terminal: foreman start I have tried sudo vim /procfile and created the file and saved it in what I thought to be the root. Then I typed: foreman start and the response is that Procfile does not exist. Any help would be most appreciated.

  I wasn't allowed to update to the next release of Edubuntu recently. It gave me an error stating that I did not have enough space to run the update. How can I expand the size of the Edubuntu partition to allow me to update? I am new to Linux so I hope that I am giving you enough and correct information on my system. I am using an older Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. My root.disk file is 16.3Gb and the system.disk file is 256Mb. • Help slecting dedicated server with good disk I/O & network

  Hi, I am looking for a cheap dedicated server. (I was earlier happy with VPS, untill I realized that the disk I/O is not at all reliable and depends on what your neighbours are upto at the moment). I was browsing through http://www.lowenddedi.net/the-database I don't understand memory speed and NIC speed columns at all. What will be their affect? Do I need to worry about them?
