• Taking a break from programming harmful to career?

  I'm currently taking a year out from University to do an internship at a large (well known) software vendor. I'll be returning to Uni next September for a year to finish my studies. I really want to take a year out after graduation, I won't be doing any programming in this year. Will this make me less competitive when applying for programmer jobs when I get back from my year away? I'm looking to work with the Microsoft technology stack, my internship has been all Java and Unix thus far. The assumption is I won't be taking up a full time offer with the company I interned at (despite the offer).

• What scenarios/settings will result in a query on SQL Server (2008) return stale data

  Most applications rarely need to display 100% accurate data. For example if this stack overflow question displays that there have been 0 views, when there have really been 10, it doesn't really matter. This is one way that the (perceived) performance of applications can be improved, by caching results and therefore sometimes not showing 100% accurate results. There are some cases where the data does need to be 100% accurate though. So if I run the query select * from Foo I want to be sure that the results are not stale. Now depending on how my database is set up, other activity on the database, use of transactions and isolation levels etc this query may or may not be a true reflection of the world. What scenario's and settings can people think of that will result in this query returning stale results or given that another connection is part way through a transaction that has updated this table, how can I guarantee that when the above query returns, the results will be accurate.

• How to make an element slide with the viewport as it scrolls?

  I've Googled for this but must be using the wrong keywords. Basically I want to use the effect that Magento and now Stack Overflow uses. That is, there is an element in a column, and when you scroll down, it sticks to the top of the viewport. And once scrolled up again, it goes back into the normal page flow. This Ask A Question is a good page for example. Scroll down and watch the "How to Format" element come down (might need to make your viewport smaller if you have a large screen to see the effect). I've noticed it is setting position: fixed in the CSS. The JavaScript however is obfuscated. What's the easiest way to achieve this effect? Is there a jQuery plugin available?

• Software buttons in the android 4.2 emulator not showing up (tablet)

  I'm getting crazy right now. I just installed the latest android adt bundle from http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html. It's version v21.0.0. Now I wanted to test my tablet app (designed for 10.1" xlarge mdpi) in the emulator, but I cannot get any software buttons for home/back/... Here's my device configuration. This config is afterwards assigned to the avd. http://i.stack.imgur.com/Q7xvP.png Hardware-buttons don't work as well (you cannot set hardware buttons in a tablet-like emulator). The target api is level 15 (android 4.0.3). I searched stackoverflow, but didn't find any help concerning the latest version of android. • Mod_rewrite trouble: Want to direct from ?= to a flat link, nothing seems to work.

  I have a site that currently serves results as example.com/index.php?show=foo and I'd like it to read example.com/show/foo. My understanding is this would make them visible to search engine robots, and it seems a much simpler way to do this than to create a couple hundred html files... I've tried the following .htaccess code: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^show/(.*)$ index.php?show=$1 [NC,L] No dice.   Hi! I've seen projects which use many screens each one for different layout and functionality. I've seen projects with only one screen (like wizard workflow) where content is changed on user interaction (and this seems to be logical to use single screen in wizards). But also I've seen projects (apps like game or messenger or phone settings utility) which use single screen for different functionalities. I can see such advantages of having single screen in app: keep same decoration design and menu or toolbar (which may be also achieved with inheritance) keep single screen in ui stack (which may be achieved by pop/push screen) easy to handle data over application Can you tell other advantages/disadvantages of single screen app? When its better to use this approach? Thank you!

• Is this the best way to query an element and its children?

  I'm trying to query an element and its children to find ID's that begin with a particular string. var foundIDs = containerElement.find('[id^=something]').andSelf().filter('id^=something'); The find() method only searches descendants so I thought I'd try andSelf(). However, andSelf() does not take a selector. This means that the container element is included regardless of whether it matches the find query or not and I then have to perform a secondary filter() on it to remove the container element if it didn't match after all. I attempted to put andSelf() before the find() but it didn't seem to pick up the container element into the stack. containerElement.andSelf().find('[id^=something]'); Is there any better way to achieve what I'm doing?

  I’m taking a course in C and we have to make a program for the classic Postfix evaluation problem. Now, I’ve already completed this problem in java, so I know that we have to use a stack to push the numbers into, then pop them when we get an operator, I think I’m fine with all of that stuff. The problem I have been having is scanning the postfix expression in C. In java it was easier because you could use charAt and you could use the parseInt command. However, I’m not aware of any similar commands in C. So could anyone explain a method to read each value from a string in the form: 4 9 * 0 - = Where the equals is the signal of the end of the input. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance :)

  Hi, I'm trying to get better at C++ (I know a little). I'm working on character arrays. I found an exercise where the objective is to reverse a character array (after I convert it from an integer). I'm getting the following error (using VS2005): Run-Time Check Failure #2 - Stack around the variable 'revBuffer' was corrupted. • PHP - Setting Database Info

  First off, I'm sorry if this shows no code which is not what Stack Overflow is about..But I have no clue where to go on this. I have a basic CMS I made, and I am trying to distribute it. I want to make it so that upon going to /cms/install for example, they set the database info, and different info to integrate into the CMS. Now my issue is, what would be the best method to allow the user to store that database info? A cookie seems to not be the right way..Could I store database info inside of a database? Not too sure where to go on this. More or less. What is the best way to temporarily store the database information the user gave before arrival of the full CMS.

I'm looking to float my navigation to the right of its current position around 200px more, there is room but it wont move over. • Eclipse 3.5 (Cocoa) slowing down irregularly after some time

  Hi, I'd like to hear, if anyone else encounters the same problems, and doesn't use Google's GWT (2.0) plugins: Sometimes, my Eclipse 3.5 (Cocoa) slows down after some time of usage (=30 minutes), so that things like maximizing an editor or moving the splitters becomes unbearably slow (reacting only after several seconds). After an Eclipse restart, everything's fine again. I'm not running low on memory (neither free RAM, nor memory available to Eclipse - Heap/Stack/PermGenSpace), and my system specs are not too bad. I know exactly one other person so far, who sees the same problem - but he also uses the GWT plugins. Since these issues appear irregularly, they're hard to track. Before creating an issue on the GWT bug tracker, I'd like to find out, if this also happens for somebody without Google's plugins. Thanks, Chris Edit: I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2

  Hi, How can I setup Eclipse to stop at the point an exception occurred. I have an Eclipse breakpoint setup to break on an exception. In the code example below, the problem I'm having is Eclipse tries to open the Integer source code. Is there any way to just have debugger break at the point shown in my code example? If I move down the stack trace, I will get to this line, it'd be nice if there's a way to do this without the "Source not found" window coming up. • How do I use a default setting from Root.plist?

  I have set up a default setting for my app using Root.plist, giving this a Boolean DefaultValue of YES (ticked checkbox).You can see a screengrab at http://www.infin8design.com/clients/stack/plist.png However, when my app is first launched, the YES value is not picked up, and the setting is read as a NO (or 0). The user has to manually go into the settings app, turn the toggleswitch off, then turn it back on again for this setting to hold a YES(1) value. I'm logging the value with appDidFinishLaunching like this. - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSLog(@"%d",[defaults boolForKey:@"include_phrases"]); SO... my question is... • [Android] How to launch an Activity without a UI?

  Is it in any way possible to launch an activity from the main function without having a UI? i.e. is there a way to create a sort of "wrapper" around another activity, i.e. by launching the main activity, it takes you to another activity automatically. If that is not possible, is there a way to remove the main activity from the stack so that clicking the back button does not take you to a blank UI?   hello everyone, total newbie is here :) i have this header file, zeeheader.h, and i wrote some classes in it, i'm having problems giving a string as a parameter to one of the functions: class DeliTest { public: void DeliCheck(Stack*,string); void ComCheck (unsigned,string); bool EofCheck (unsigned,string); }; as i was implementinng it in the cpp file, i added #include to it, it seemed to be working, for example : as i was writing the "data." i got the "length()" appear by the intellisense, so i thought that it was working, but it wasn't. i got errors like: syntax error : identifier 'string' overloaded member function not found in 'DeliTest' this is one of the fucntions in the cpp file: bool DeliTest::EofCheck(unsigned i, string data) { if (i == data.length()-1) return 1; return 0; } am i supposed to be adding something to the header file??

Am I right? I am confused why the increasedObject2 prints 5 and not 6. Can anyone please explain?

• C#: reading in a text file more 'intelligently'

  I have a text file which contains a list of alphabetically organized variables with their variable numbers next to them formatted something like follows: aabcdef 208 abcdefghijk 1191 bcdefga 7 cdefgab 12 defgab 100 efgabcd 999 fgabc 86 gabcdef 9 h 11 ijk 80 ... ... I would like to read each text as a string and keep it's designated id# something like read "aabcdef" and store it into an array at spot 208. The 2 issues I'm running into are: I've never read from file in C#, is there a way to read, say from start of line to whitespace as a string? and then the next string as an int until the end of line? given the nature and size of these files I do not know the highest ID value of each file (not all numbers are used so some files could house a number like 3000, but only actually list 200 variables) So how could I make a flexible way to store these variables when I don't know how big the array/list/stack/etc.. would need to be.
