• Tools to test multicast routing

  I am looking for a good simple tool that runs on a standard OS (Windows or Linux) that I can used to test that multicast is being passed properly by a router. I have been asked by a client to enable multicast routing on a Linux box acting as their router since their phone system requires multicast to for a few features. Since I am not physically near the client I don't really have the ability to experiment with the various methods for setting up multicast routing on Linux. I can setup a router at my desk that is identical to what is deployed on their network, but I don't know of any good simple tools that I can use to generate or listen for multicast traffic. The one mulicast tool I have found is mcast.exe tool which is part of the Windows 2000/2003 resource kit. From what I have read online it seems that mcast.exe does not work across a router, and only works on the local network, so that doesn't seem to be useful for me to test multicast routing. So what do tool(s) do you use to test that multicast routing is properly setup?

  I am trying to setup search in a WebDAV repository in IIS 6 on Windows Server 2003 R2. I successfully configured WebDAV in IIS and enabled my repository indexing as described in Searching WebDAV Directories (IIS 6.0) I have verified that search is now supported by my WebDAV server, in OPTIONS request I can see DASL support: DASL: <DAV:sql> DAV: 1, 2 Public: OPTIONS, TRACE, GET, HEAD, DELETE, PUT, POST, COPY, MOVE, MKCOL, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, LOCK, UNLOCK, SEARCH Allow: OPTIONS, TRACE, GET, HEAD, DELETE, COPY, MOVE, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, SEARCH, MKCOL, LOCK, UNLOCK I connected to my WebDAV server from a client computer, which is Windows 8.1 and WebDAV is working well. I mounted a drive and connected using \\server@port\DawWWWRoot as described here. However my client computer, which is Windows 7, does not generate any search request. I have captured requests using Fiddler tool and found that Windows Explorer is not sending any search requests, instead it is sending a PROPFIND and downloading files. How do I make Windows Explorer to send SEARCH request to my WebDAV server?

• vmware server end of life, where to go now?

  We have some virtual machines on vmware server 2.x running on 64 bit hardware and quite happy with it. As vmware server will no longer be offered we are thinking to migrate to ESXi, which seems is free. We will have to install the specialized network cards but that's a minor problem. But once left alone with a quite silently discontinued product there is some resistance to vmware. VirtualBox seems to work: http://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/2010/06/migrating_from_vmware_to_virtu.html What other free (of licencing cost) options are there? We have windows server 2003 32 bit VMs and also linux 32 and 64 bit VMs to migrate. So xen does not seem an option, which does not run microsoft OSes.

• No "Terminal Services" branch in "Group Policy Object Editor"

  Hi, We have several identical several servers in a hosting company. They run Windows 2003 R2 Std SP2 64bit. The servers are not in a domain. We have recently received a new server with the same configuration and hardware. However, the new server is different in some way. When we run "gpedit.msc /s" there are much less options in the tree than the other servers. Specifically we are missing the configuration of "Terminal Services". Many other items are missing under "Administrative templates" and "Windows components".   Hello, I've just a little question. My DNS Servers are updated by our DHCP Server (Microsoft Windows 2003 R2 SP2). My clients are Debian Linux Distro's, and I have to modify my DHCLIENT.CONF file on it to send his Full Qualified Hostname. BUT I've about 1600 computers and I don't want to modify each client one by one, then, Could I for exemple use a System Variable on the Config file? Exemple: #DHCLIENT CONF; send "$hostname" where $hostname variable is the alias write on BASHRC for the hostname -f command. If you need any more informations just tell me.

• issue when promoting a second server as domain on r2 2008

  Hello, I'm in an odd situatuion here, I've upgraded my network to a 2008 domain from a 2003 with out any issue, this works fine and all the FSMO are in one DC, I was about to install a second domain on a 2008R2 and this error is coming up again and again. I The problem is I keep getting an area telling me that I need to run adprep /domainPrep /forestPrep, but when I run it on the First DC, it tells me this has already been run and updated and it is aborted. Does anyone have any ideas on why I can't add a Server 2008 machine as a domain controller?

• Problems with login scripts on Terminal Server 2008

  We are having issues with login scripts not running on Windows 2008 Terminal Server. This is a brand new implementation and they have never worked. The test user in question doesn't have any problems running login scripts on their workstation. I have tried logging into the server directly with their account, but still no scripts run. I have setup a test account with Domain Admins rights in the same OU as theirs and the scripts don't run. I can manually run the scripts from the SYSVOL\somedomain.com\Policies folder and they run fine. The Terminal 2008 Server is in a mixed 2003/2008 domain. The user can run the gpupdate on the server without error. I have also run the Group Policy Results for this user and the terminal server and everything looks good, no errors. Any suggestions?

  Hello, I'm using: Vista SP2 Visual Studio 2010 professional edition SQL Server 2008 Express R2 Dev Server (Cassini) This question has been asked several times. Unfortunately, I didn't find yet an answer that exactly appropriate for me, so it's not possible to apply the solutions I find on the web. I find solutions for Win XP, 7, 2003, sql server 2005. But not for the above combination. I just don't why this problem started a couple days ago. I removed sql server and added it again, but no good result. • Speedup vmware esx guest hdd access

  Hello, we run several windows servers and windows clients on our vmware esx. One of the Windows 2003 Servers is a build-server with major HDD-reads/writes. as it is our build server. This machine was a hardware before and was virtualized to the ESX. Is there any way to increase the HDD-Performance? Perhaps there are special windows (guest) drivers? The files are stored on a Raid6 base. Performance graph of vmware infrastructure client shows reads up to 650 KBps and writes up to 4000 KBps. Thank you. Regards, Uwe

  I am trying to open an additional mailbox in Outlook 2003 for one of my users. She already has three additional mailboxes in the list (found in the advanced account settings), and these work fine. When I click the "Add..." button, it immediately reports: The name could not be resolved. The action could not be completed. This is before I am prompted for the name. We're using an externally hosted Exchange 2007 server. How do I resolve this?

• Replication in PG 9 between Windows and Linux boxes

  I have PostgreSQL 9 running on Windows 2003 SP2. I am trying to replicate it on a Fedora 12 system running PostgreSQL 9 as well. I am hitting this error message: /usr/pgsql-9.0/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/pgsql/9.0/data/ -p 5432 2011-02-11 17:43:26 ISTFATAL: incorrect checksum in control file Because of firewall restrictions, I could not follow the official instructions to the letter. Instead, I zipped the contents of the data directory when the server was offline and copied that to the Linux box. I ran a sha1deep on both directories and there were no mismatches. I changed the rights so that only the postgres user and group had access to the files. Now, what can I do for replication to work? I tried with a 'pg_dumpall', but the system complains that the database IDs do no match.

• Enable anonymous access to report builder in reporting services 2008

  I have a 2008 reporting services server installed on windows 2003 server. I am trying to allow anonymous access to the report builder folder so that my users do not have to select the remember password option when they login, if they are wanting to use the report builder. All I have found so far is that I should be able to do this with the IIS manager, but that only seems to work for reporting services 2005. Reporting services 2008 does not show up in the IIS manager, enabling anonymous access seems to be hidden somewhere else. How do I enable anonymous access to report builder in reporting services 2008?

I tried the to use the standard method for example $con = mysqli_connect("192.168.1.126","root","mysql","asterisk"); However when I log into the asterisk server to access the mysql database all i need it to type "mysql" and im logged in. • Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 does not install

  I'm trying to install SP3 on an install of Sql Server 2005 running on Server 2003 32 bit. When I run the installer it doesn't seem to recognize that I have SQL Server 2005 installed. The dialog box that asks what features should be updated doesn't show any by default. More troubling, it doesn't allow me to check any of those boxes to update features like Database Services or Reporting Services. When I select one of these services, the "Status" box says "Not Valid". • Siteminder webagent installation failed

  Hi All, I have tried to install a 32 bit Netegrity(CA) siteminder web agent on 64 bit Windows server 2003. The IIS server is V 6.0 and so it is also 64 bit. But the problem is while configuring the agent it is showing metabase error. Previously 64 bit web agent was installed on the same server and removed. The IIS V 6.0 is also reinstalled on the server. But after that when I tried to install 32 bit siteminder web agent, it is showing an error as said above. Is it possible to install a 32 bit siteminder web agent on 64 bit IIS?   We have a SQL server running SQL 2005 Workgroup 64 bit (9.0.4273), on Windows 2003 server 64 bit. We have run sp_configure and reconfigured the server which indicates that the clr is now enabled. exec sp_configure 'clr enabled', '1' go reconfigure go However, when trying to call CREATE ASSEMBLY the server completely dies on us and we have to do a full reboot of the machine. A little more diagnostic information, even though clr enabled is set to 1 and we have rebooted the full server, running the following statement select * from sys.dm_clr_properties returns directory version state locked CLR version with mscoree which is what it says when the CLR is not enabled on another machine. On a correctly enabled machine (after reboot) this function reads directory C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\ version v2.0.50727 state CLR is initialized

• Re-deploy Reports from SCOM 2007 R2 Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportServerException: The item '/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Library/Microsoft.SystemCenter.DataWarehouse.Report.Alert' cannot be found. • Windows 2008 R2 File Sharing - 'Access denied' if groups are specified in ACL

  I am trying to move our old Windows 2003 File Server to Windows 2008 R2. What I have noticed, however, is that the entries for groups in the ACL are being ignored. For example, a user is part of a group in active directory. If I create a folder and enable full access for this group, then share this folder (and define sharing permissions for this group), users in that group do not get access to that folder. If I make an entry in the ACL for the user itself, it works perfectly. These even applies to my domain administrator account - If I create a folder and give full control to the local administrators group / domain administrators group, and I physically log on to the server, I still do not get access - I need to explicitly define my name to proceed. I am not sure what the problem is, tried looking it up in Google to no avail Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

• Missing "log on to" field in Windows 2008 password change dialog

  I have to setup an embedded standalone CIFS server outside of domain environment. I shall refer to the server as storage_gateway. The default password setting for the Administrator account is Password must be changed. Until Administrator password is changed other local accounts are disabled. While the server is on default password connecting to a share causes fails with NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE error. $ smbclient -L //storage_gateway -U Administrator session setup failed: NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE I have a mixed Linux/Windows environment and prefer smbclient for diagnostics. To change the password in Windows 2003 Server I could press CTRL-ALT-DEL to get into the Windows Security window and change password for the remote server specifying the server name or ip address (xx.xx.xx.xx) in the system password change dialog. (the name root is just an example, I have edited the dialogs to translate them) However in Windows 2008 the corresponding dialog lacks the Log on to field. Is there a way to change a remote password in Windows 2008 Server/Windows 7?

• Redirect users to internal webpage on first visit

  I have a lan of maybe 20 - 30 computers, and a Windows server 2003 server on hand (I can also run any x86 Linux distro). What I am trying to do, is to redirect users to a webserver inside the LAN the first time they visit certain domains. For example, the first time a user visits "google.com", they will be redirected to 192.168.1.2 (a webserver, where they will be shown a custom webpage), attempts after that will go to google. Pretty much what I am trying to do, is to provide a captive server like service, showing people a custom webpage the first time they try to access certain websites (but not others). I'm pretty flexable on how this can be done, as long as it works. Can you guys give me an idea on how to approach this problem? I am looking for (hopefully) a free solutions. Thanks

Last friday we installed some windows updates. After the reboot tomcat doesnt start with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts. Tutorials often say to use ntsec or ntsec tty here but those options are removed from the latest version of OpenSSH. I've tried using them anyway and the result is the same. The file /var/log/sshd.log is empty. If I try just running the command /usr/sbin/sshd I get the output /var/empty must be owned by root and not group or world-writable.. The /var/empty directory has the following permissions: drwxr-xr-x+ 1 cyg_server root 0 May 29 15:28 empty. Google searches on this error did not turn up any working fixes. One person seems to have solved it by using the command chown SYSTEM /var/empty but that did not fix it in my case.

• PHP vs Batch file for mysql cronjob?

  Hi, My server details: OS: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 Plesk 8.xx installed (currently using Plesk to set the cronjob) I need your advice. I have 2 methods: Method 1: Using php + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (each databases has around about 25mb) Method 2: Using batch + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (same, each databases has around about 25mb) My questions: Whats the difference of using php file and batch file for cronjob? Which method is better in term of backup speed and send email, and (maybe)safety (e.g., lesser file corrupt occurance)? If i set the cronjob hourly, will it effect my web performances? I mean, lets say my website has 100++ users online now, and each user making transaction to MySQL, when I perform backup at my web peak hour, will it decrease the performances, like the loading speed, prone to errors etc?? (sorry for my bad english) P.S: If you need my php and batch file code, please ask me to post it here. I didnt post it now is because, its very simple and standard code.

• Patch Management and System Inventory on a Windows network?

  What are some good ways to have patch management and systems/hardware inventory for a Windows (Server 2003 or 2008) network? For example, at a minimum knowing the basics for all the machines out on the network such as OS version, patch level, what hotfixes they have, processor, ram, etc. Even better would be knowing more details such as peripherals. Ideally if there were a way to push service packs, and hotfixes (and other software?) to the machines, that would be great. What are some options for this?

  Good afternoon everyone, I'm quite new to Active Directory stuff. After upgraded Functional level of our AD from 2003 to 2008 R2 (I need it to put fine-grained password policy), I then start to reorganized my OUs. I keep in mind that a good OU organization facilitate application of GPO (and maybe GPP).But in the end, it feels more natural for me to use Security-group filtering (from Scope tab) to apply my policies, instead of direct OU. Do you think it is a good practice or should I stick to OU ? We are a small organisation with 20 users and 30-35 computers. So, we got a simple OU tree, but more subtle split with security-groups. The OU tree doesn't contain any objects except at the bottom level. Each bottom level OU contains Computers,Users, and of course security groups. These security groups contains Users & Computers of the same OU. Thanks for your advices, Olivier
