• Why should "miter" joints be slower than others?

  I'm having a graphics problem on drawing lines in Flash Player, where two lines drawn on top of each other with different thickness don't align properly if I use any other JointStyle than MITER. For pictures of the effect, and for the graphics oriented part of the question, see my post over on doctype. However, there's also a second angle on this problem, which is: why should drawing the "mitered" joints be so much slower than others? This seems to be a problem since at least FP 8, but I couldn't find any detailed info on what the problem might be. Is this just an ordinary bug that didn't get fixed yet, or is there something inherently slower about drawing these joints? For example, they seem to have something to do with square roots, but I seriously lack understanding of what this joint style thing is all about, technically. It just looks like some minor detail a graphic designer might worry about. I'm asking because I'm wondering if I can do something to mitergate, er, mitigate, the problem.

• VS2008 project with Entity Framework model results in "always dirty" compile

  In VS 2008, I have a simple .csproj that contains an Entity Framework .edmx (V1) file. Every time I build the project, the output DLL is updated, even though nothing has changed. I have reproduced this in the simplest-possible project (containing one ordinary .cs file and one edmx model). If I remove the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly will not be touched. If I add the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly is modified each time. This is a problem because the real project is a dependency of dozens of other projects and it is wreaking havoc with what times when working in higher layers of the application. Is this a known problem? Any way to fix it? Thanks!

• How can I tell xCode to recheck project resources that have been modified?

  I'm working with a designer friend on an iPhone app and he likes to refine all sorts of images relating to the project we're working on. All these images have been added to the project previously (and added to the project folder by xcode) and then are modified in their new location. When I preview the images in xCode, the updated images show up but building and running in the simulator or on a device doesn't pick up the new image. In fact, if I do a clean build it seems to ignore the image all together and blank spaces appear where images should be. Now, I can delete these files from the project and re-add them and everything works peachy again. But there are a lot of them and I'd rather not do that every time an image is updated. Is there a way to get xCode to review and "learn" about these modified images? Is there a good reason for why it's not doing that automatically?

• Visual Studio 2005 - strange characters rendered for ANSI text

  Hi all, Has anyone seen this odd text rendering issue in VS2005 before? The first line of using statements actually says "using System;". If I copy the line as it is displayed and paste into notepad, the text appears correctly, so clearly the character codes are correct. In addition, the solution compiles and runs correctly. I was thinking it might be due to ClearCase using a different character encoding as all the solutions we're using were freshly checked-out yesterday on to a new build machine, but this is only happening in 2 of our ~30 solutions. Incidentally the same .cs files when opened in VS2008 render correctly on this machine, could this be a corruption in VS2005?

• Categorized SharePoint Discussion - default category to parents category on reply.

  I have a Discussion Board in a SharePoint site which has an additional column named Category. When a new discussion is created, it prompts for Category, and of course this is by design. The problem is that when the discussion is replied to, it prompts for the category again. How can I separate the reply functionality so that the Category is not prompted and the Category is set to that of the discussion under which it resides? I attempted to edit a copy of NewForm.aspx in SharePoint Designer, but you can only edit which WebPart it is using, not which fields are displayed.

• How can I inherit form and access controls from mother form?

  Hi, I'm in the middle of writing my project and I have this problem: I try to write a library and I want to use it in my application. In library I have a form with menu strip, tool bar, list view, tree view and etc. Everything in library is protected. In my application I have created the form which inherit form the library. I can change and add new functionality to list view and tree view using designer panel in VS 2008 but I don't have access to menu strip and tool bar, even though they are protected. Why is that so? I will be thankful for some advice.

Of the many programming languages you have learnt and worked with, which ones do you consider to be an essential part of one's CS culture, and why? EDIT.   Hi Everyone I'm working on a WPF application which should be utilizable with two monitors. In the main window is a button which detaches a part of the content in a second window wich can then be used on the other minitor. That second window I implemented as a singleton. That works quite good except that the second window doesn't get destoryed on application shutdown which means that the app keeps running in the background. Regarding that problem I'd like to know if a singleton is the right way to do this and if not what would be the right way. If it is, how do I get rid of the instance and why can't I access the singleton instance from app.xaml.cs? Thanks for your help.

  I have to develop a class which can run it's own hard-coded task in a background thread and communicate with container class sending him progress updates and taking messages from it. I believe I am going to extend BackgroundWorker class but it looks a bit weird to extend and I haven't managed to find a good example wit Google. Can you share a link to a good example of solving such a task? Please don't offer placing a BackgroundWorker visually on a form and reading the standard tutorial, it's not for my case. Maybe I'd better not extend but encapsulate a BackgroundWorker, but I hardly understand how to use it outide WinForms designer either :-(

• Is it possible to autocomplete fields in Sharepoint with user info?

  Hi, I'm in charge of a Sharepoint collection, and a user asks this. Is it possible that when a user creates an item, some fields are automatically filled with some info, such as email address and location? Authentication uses Active Directory, so every user is identified when using Sharepoint. The only issue is that, being in a big corporate company, I don't have any access to the server, so it must be feasible through configuration of said site/list or using Sharepoint Designer, but I can't and won't be allowed to deploy anything server side. Any idea?

  Consider the following C# program: using System; using System.Diagnostics; namespace Test { class MainClass { public static void Main (string[] args) { Debug.Assert(false); Debug.Fail("fail!"); Console.WriteLine ("Hello World!"); } } } When compiling this using: dmcs -debug -d:DEBUG Main.cs and then running it with: mono --debug Main.exe the assertion and fail seem to be ignored. The output is just: Hello World! I checked other related questions on StackOverflow, but I could not find a solution. In particular the solution give in Mono - Debug.Assert does not work does not work. (UPDATE: the update solution does work, see below comments.) I use Mono 2.1.5-1 on Ubuntu 11.10.

  I am a UI/UX designer and I would like to create kiosk type of app that would be a product catalog (help/suggestor) for customers in a retail store using a touch screen monitor (and computer).   I have a VS2010 (RTM) solution which contains: WCF Service project Console WCF client project Class project for DataContracts and members Class project for some simple classes I successfully added a service reference in the console client project and ran the client. I then did a long dev cycle repeatedly modifying the service then updating console service reference. I then changed the namespace and assembly names for the projects as well as the .cs using references and app.config. I of course missed some things as it would not build so I eventually removed the project references and the service reference, cleaned and built successfully. I then attempted to add the service reference again, it discovered it but threw the “Object reference not set to an instance of an object” when OK'ing. Fix in answer below...

• Using database default values with Linq to SQL codewise

  I am using Dynamic Data with linq to SQL and SQL Server 2008. I have a GUID column that gets his value from the default value with newguid(). When I set IsDbGenerated to true in the designer it works like a charm. But when I renew table this property is set back to false again. So I added it to the metadata. For some reason it's not being pickup, "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" is being inserted in database. The displayname and readonly change are being pick up. What am I missing? • Problem loading js content with ajax

  I have a page that loads content into a single div via a script in the page. It works fine but the problem is that I have a lightbox in one of the dynamically loaded pages that only works the first time you navigate to it (the script I got for the page loading is found here). Once you navigate to another area, then back again, the lightbox fails to work and instead just loads the plain image. It's been suggested that the easiest way to fix this would be to have a script unload the js and css that is loaded in with the page, then reload it when you go back to the gallery section. I'm a designer, not a developer though, so I don't know if this is true or not. Any help is really appreciated. The page can be found here: justgooddesign.net/graduation/

• Dropdown binding and postbacks - ASP.NET

  I have a rather complex page. The ASPX page loads a user control which in turn loads a child User control. Parent Control protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { //Loads child control } In the child user control, I use custom control that inherits from System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlSelect ASCX: <cust:CustDropDownList id="ctlDdl" runat="server"/> ASCX.CS protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { //Binds CtlDdl here } When the user clicks on the Save button, the controls get user controls get dynamically reloaded, but Iose the value the user has selected in the dropdown. I run into the chicken and egg problem here. I think I need to bind the ctlDdl only on if its not a postback, but that results in the dropdown not getting populated. If I bind it everytime, then i lose user's selection EDIT: Can someone respond to my comment to Jonathan's answer? Thanks
