• How do I connect a laptop running Windows 7 to an Android phone using WiFi Direct?

  From where I am sitting, Windows 7 does not appear to support WiFi Direct connections to Android mobile devices. Specifically, turning on WiFi Direct on my Samsung Galaxy S II does not make the device visible as a potential WiFi network connection. Windows 8 is said to support WiFi Direct, but I have no desire to upgrade at this time. I have successfully set up ad hoc WiFi connections between the S II and my laptop before, but as you may be aware, these are not the same as WiFi Direct. Before posting this question, I searched [ "Windows 7" "WiFi Direct" ] and variations thereof, and dutifully slogged through dozens of lame or irrelevant responses on various forums, badly made YouTube videos, and probable Trojan horse distribution sites. If someone out there knows how to do this, it's buried in the noise.

• Raid system fails to boot after moving from 2.6 kernel to 3.5

  I'm running Gentoo Linux with a custom compiled kernel and I've just migrated from a 2.6 kernel to a 3.5. As my HD's are on RAID 0 mode I use a custom initrd file in order to be able to boot. While kernel 2.6 is able to boot without problems the new 3.5 compiled kernel fails to boot complaining about no block devices found. After taking a look at initrd.cpio contained scripts I can see the failure message is given by mdadm tool. Does anyone has a clue about that? Edit: this morning i noticed there was some kind of issue on my old initrd which works fine for 2.6 kernels, so created a new initrd which works fine and let me to boot into GNU/Gentoo Linux with same 3.5 bzImage. • Xen find VBD id for physical disks

  I'm starting a xen domU using xm create config.cfg. Within the config file are a number of physical block devices (LVs) which are added to the guest and can be accessed fine when it boots. However, at a point in the future I need to be able to hot unplug one of these disks using the xm block-detach command. This command, however, requires the vbd id of the device to be detached and I can't find a way to find the device id for a particular disk 'plugged in' at start up. Any help is much appreciated!

  I'm running some lengthy video encodes using the Handbrake command line interface. After all my encodes are done, I would like to have the PC speaker beep, as I usually turn my large external speakers off. On Linux I would install the "beep" package, but so far I haven't found such a program for Windows 7. Possibly related links: System "Beep" sound does not function in Windows Vista x64 with HD Audio devices (I am indeed using an HD Audio device: the SoundMAX ADI1986A) What’s up with the Beep driver in Windows 7? • USB-keyboard & mouse powered off in windows-7

  I have a problem with a pc where usb devices are not getting any power as soon as windows starts up (it works in preboot). This pc has no ps/2, so there is no chance for input, also not in secure boot mode. I "tidied up" using sysinternals autostart, so there is a chance I messed something up here, although I'm quite sure I only deleted some old printer drivers from autostart. I do not know how to reset this, I cant even log in because there is no input possible. I could use a linux live cd, but I don't know what to do there because there is no sysinternals from linux into a not running windows... To make things even worse, I have the windows installation completely encrypted with truecrypt, so I haven't even tried windows recovery cd yet. There is no loss of data since I can access the disc with a live-linux, I only want to use it again without resetting up everything. Any suggestions?

  One of my clients is a small school district in Texas. Like any school, they often have problems with network'd peripherals such as printers, et al. It would be nice to be able to simply "listen" to what the printer and PC are saying to each other (or not saying more importantly)... The problem is that I can't find old-style "hubs" anymore, and even if I could, it's not a long-term solution. All of the devices that I have found to replicate the purpose of a simple hub are either $100+ or are difficult to throw into a networking tool kit (aka my backpack)... Now that hubs are dead, what's the new low-cost standard for simple packet capture in the networking world?

• Software RAID 1 broken, how do I fix this?

  I'm running CentOS 6 x86_64. There is a software RAID 1 being used on the two internal 80GB drives. I got the following e-mail sent to me: A DegradedArray event had been detected on md device /dev/md1. Faithfully yours, etc. P.S. The /proc/mdstat file currently contains the following: Personalities : [raid1] md0 : active raid1 sda1[0] 511988 blocks super 1.0 [2/1] [U_] md1 : active raid1 sda2[0] 8190968 blocks super 1.1 [2/1] [U_] bitmap: 1/1 pages [4KB], 65536KB chunk md4 : active raid1 sdc1[0] sdb1[1] 1953512400 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU] md3 : active raid1 sdd5[1] sda5[0] 61224892 blocks super 1.1 [2/2] [UU] bitmap: 1/1 pages [4KB], 65536KB chunk md2 : active raid1 sdd3[1] sda3[0] 8190968 blocks super 1.1 [2/2] [UU] unused devices: <none> The system appears to have booted fine and is working. The two drives' content did not change at all. I only removed and reinstalled them while I was booted on the CentOS Live DVD. How do I get the array working again?

  I own a small private security services business. Some of my clients require 2-10 security officers per location. I'm trying to think outside the box in order to solve my communications problem. I'd rather not buy or lease hf radios or voip systems at the current rates.   I recently bought a Samsung Smart TV having in mind to connect it to the Internet. Because my router is very far from it and not wanting to buy an expensive wireless for the TV, I created a homemade solution. I have the laptop (an smartphone and the PC) connected to the router which is connected to the internet. I shared the laptop's wireless connection to the ethernet port which I connected to the TV. So far, the TV is connected to the internet, but is there any way to make him part of the router's network instead of the 2 devices network (the laptop and the TV)?

• Odd Apple AirPort Express behaviour

  I've been using a rather old AirPort Express for home Wi-Fi for a number of years. (It's old enough that it only supports WPA, not WPA2 -- perhaps this is an indication that I should upgrade!) In the last week I've been experiencing very slow internet over the Wi-Fi. Suspecting that someone outside my home was leeching from me (despite a reasonable password and MAC address filtering turned on) I decided to change some settings: I changed the SSID, turned off broadcast of the SSID and changed the password. After these changes, I managed to connect using the new password on my iPad. But on the other devices I tried (iPhone, PS3) I was not able to connect. In fact, I only succeeded in connecting when I entered my OLD password! Is this a known issue with ancient AirPort Express units? Is my unit cracked and unrecoverable?

• How do you synchronise huge sparse files (VM disk images) between machines?

  Is there a command, such as rsync, which can synchronise huge, sparse, files from one linux server to another? It is very important that the destination file remains sparse. It may be longer (but not bigger) than the drive which contains it. Only changed blocks should be sent across the wire. • Accessing VMware Player across the network

  My network: 192.168.2.2 (computer) 255.255.255.0 (mask) 192.168.2.254 (gateway) The VMplayer is: 192.168.233.129 (ip) 255.255.255.0 (mask) 192.168.233.255(bcast) It's obvious the player can't be access from other systems because of the wrong network settings. However, I am not sure as to how to change that. Obviously I have to edit the ifcg-eth0 but I know I also need to edit it on the host system to make it accessably. Is this done from inside VMware Player? Or do I need to edit the network devices? The host box is Windows. Inside VMware is Linux.

• 8 Character Device names

  Is there any reason to still use only 8 characters in a device name? My boss still uses this rule for printers, computers, routers, servers... basicly any device connected to our network. This leads to massive confusion among users, especially when it comes to printer. It also leads to confusion from an administration standpoint because every device is named vaguely, and similarly(its only 8 characters!). I understand the history behind this and compatibility with older systems, but none of our legacy systems will ever make use of PS-printers and Wifi networks. Is there any reason to still do this, and what is everyone else doing when it comes to naming network devices at an enterprise level?

• Cisco 350 Bridge vxWorks connecting to IOS

  I have 2 bridges one is a Cisco 350 Bridge with vxWorks as a non-root bridge w/o clients and another Cisco 350 Bridge running IOS set as Root Bridge. It seems no matter what configuration I can't seem to associate the vxworks to the IOS bridge. I have even tried swapping the roles and they still do not communicate. Any ideas how I can make the two connect, I would have upgraded the 350 to IOS as well but it will not upgrade. From my research it appears there is no way for these two devices to communicate but I wanted to be sure of that.

• Question regarding IPv6 - Solicited-Node Address with a Link local scope

  Situation: A small LAN comprising a Windows 7 Ultimate x54 PC, 2 XP Pro x86 PCs and an Asus router.The Win 7 box has IPv6 enabled. There are no other IPv6 enabled devices on the LAN. In my firewall I see numerous requests originating from the Win 7 PC, which are for the Multicast address ff02::1:ff.... which is a Solicited-Node address query and has a scope of 2 which equates to the local link. As far as I knew local link addresses are filtered by routers, hence local link. Given that situation I'm wondering why I'm seeing these queries being generated to various addresses? Any ideas? • iTunes want to remove my existing apps on iPad

I connected my iPad to some new PC, Synced, then ticking Sync Apps from Devices-Apps will give me warning that all existing apps on my iPad will be replaced with those from Library-Apps. But in Library I have just couple old apps, which long time ago I used. So how I can sync the library in iTunes with my existing apps from iPad? EDIT: I have tried to click on Transfer Purchases, but not all of the items went to the library, just few of them.

• Using VMware's ESXi, can I plug in 30 USB Wireless adapters and allow each of 30 VMs one?

  I'm assuming ESXi will act very similarly to VMware Workstation or other products, so answers based on knowledge of those programs might also help. I want to plug in 30 USB Wireless or Ethernet adapters into my server, and let each VM access one and only one of these devices. Unfortunately, I don't have the hardware to just try it out as the purchase of hubs and adapters hinges on the result of this question. The answer could be a resounding "yes, easy!" and that would be great. I couldn't find any answers to this question with google, and it's possible that this is because it's so easy to do. Thanks!

• The sound freezes while listening to music

  I have bought an sound card - Sound Blaster X-FI Surround 5.1 PRO and while I'm listening to the music, after few minutes or even hours (it does happends randomly) the sound dissapears and I have to go settings: Playing Devices - Advanced and switch the Default Format (sampling frequency) and switch from the `16-bits, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) to any other from the list (16-bits, 96000 Hz or 24-bits, 48000 Hz or 24-bits 96000 Hz). I have been trying to set all of the above options, but for all of them the sound freezes after listening to music. It is getting annoying and I hope its the settings fault and not my sound card. I got my drivers installed from the attached CD and I'm running Windows 7 HP 64 bits. If anyone would try to help me, I would really appreciate this.

• Asus RT-N66U forgets USB-Printer

  about a week ago I bought the new Asus RT-N66U as the new Router in our little company. There are about 5 clients and 2 printers. There's a USB-only printer as well, therefor we bougth a router with USB-printer sharing. The setup and everything works smooth, but then after one day, and I still haven't found out why, suddenly the printer dosen't show up in the list of connected devices in the routers webinterface anymore. Of course I loose the possibility of printig, even though the printer shows up as "online" in the system settings. Can anybody guess the reason for this problem? Thank you very much

• Mouse/Touchpad not working in Mac OS X Lion Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA) with File Vault 2

  I set up File Vault 2 in Mac OS X Lion with Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA). In PBA-login my USB-keyboard is working, while using a wrong keyboard layout. I can neither use my magic touchpad nor an USB-mouse in PBA. Thus I can't change the keyboard layout located in the upper right corner. I tried unplugging all USB-devices except keyboard and mouse. Nothing seems to help and the mouse cursor isn't moving. How can I get magic trackpad or USB-mouse to work in PBA login screen or manually set the used keyboard layout in PBA? Update: Still no (USB-)mouse or bluetooth trackpad support in File Vault 2 Login Screen. Today I talked to Apple Support for over one hour with no result. Every idea is appreciated.

• Configure PL2303-based USB-to-RS232 adapter to stay awake when no active device is present

  I am resurrecting some X10 devices with the aid of a USB-to-RS232 adapter. The problem is, that the adapter only works with the Firecracker device when there is another serial device on the line (the Firecracker is a pass-through device that monitors the RTS and DTR lines to do its magic). Is the PL2303 going to sleep without a real device on the line? Is there an option or command to keep it awake? Is there a cable configuration that would make it work without a real serial device present?

  I've had recently a period of repeated disconnections from my router with connection problems. I checked my router log I found several Ping Flooding entries all originating from the IP 69.171.227.232 which turned out to be one of Facebook IPs! I'm wondering what does that means? Can Facebook chat cause such a condition? My router is DLink dir 600 and the condition that devices were disconnected from router, not router from internet.. Connection is WAN And how to solve this router problem?? My wifi clients were about 3-5 at that time..

• Win 2008 Server configuration

  Let me preface my question by saying I'm a novice in regards to server configuration. It's been 12+ years since I've attempted this. What we (our small office) are trying to achieve is to setup a Win 2008 server (located in a home) in a home network configuration (basic wireless router w/DHCP) that we (the office) can VPN to from our office. I have installed the software, installed DHCP, removed DHCP from the router, set the scope for 100 IPs and am now looking for information as to where I go from here? I believe I need to configure DNS and possibly set up static routes on the router for the home devices that need internet? The wireless clients are not receiving IPs is the current issue that I'd like to tackle. Also, would it be feasible to use the router's DHCP to assign IPs rather than having the server do it? If so, what would be the most direct way to accomplish this? I appreciate any help in this matter. Thanks

  I have a Netgear FS605 v3 router, and i'm trying to expand my network. The router is connected to the cable modem with cat5 cable. I have 2 laptop connected to the router but i'm only able to get internet connectivity in one. The first laptop i turn on, get the signal and the other one will show no connectivity. • SQL Server 2012 Installation Hangs

  We have a Windows 8 machine that we installed SQL Server 2005 on first. We then uninstalled it and installed SQL Server 2012 - unsuccessfully. The installation wizard hung at the point where it says: SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu64 The event log showed the following error: The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with the following service-specific error: WARNING: You have until SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) to logoff. If you have not logged off at this time, your session will be disconnected, and any open files or devices you have open may lose data. We got the same error while trying to start the service. We tried uninstalling and re-installing but faced the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.
