• What are the best possible ways to benchmark RAM (no-ECC) under linux / arm?

  I want to test integrity and global performances of no-ECC memory chips on a custom board Are there some tools that run under linux so I can monitor system and global temperature in the same time ? Are there some no-ECC specific tests to do in general ? EDIT 1: I already know how to monitor temperature (I use a special platform feature /sys/devices/platform/......../temp1_input). • Remote Control Home PC from Corporate Work PC

  Here is my situation: I am currently on a Windows XP workstation at work. I have an android tablet that I use to splashtop into my home PC. I would like to be able to use my work keyboard and mouse to control my home PC while I am splashtop'd into it using my tablet. My work PC is on a corporate LAN, and not on the same network as my tablet. The company I work for provides wifi for personal devices, but they are not accessable to the internal network. I thought about going the Synergy route, however that would require my home PC to be able to connect to my work PC which isn't really possible. The opposite would work though, if I could reverse connect the server to the client, but the Synergy software doesn't really support that. I do have a couple linux boxes running at home, so I can ssh into my home network and tunnel ports via SSH if needed. With what I have, how can I accomplish seamless keyboard and mouse sharing between my work PC and either my home PC or my android tablet?

• mdadm - Recovering a 'split' RAID1 array

  I have two drives that used to be part of a single RAID1 volume but it appears that one of them went offline for some time, something I've noticed just now when I rebooted my system. • Will I have internet connection issues next day, if I unplug router at night?

  I did this regularly a few years ago and used to feel like I was 'being punished' by the Interent svc provider for disabling access to my computer, because trying to re-connect the next day became a constant pain. I have the same linksys router, a comcast modem, and hi-speed broadband through their LAN. Question: who or what is at fault for lousy internet connections, slow connections, or no connections: (everybody's tech dept. blames everybody else) The router? 10 year olds, maybe obsolete? The modem? came with the service plan - can connect three devices on a sharedconnection. The ISP: I read they not only even control and completely regulate bandwidth usage, but they also ration it!! (true?) So can I safely 'pull the plug' each night for security or not? thnx

• Logitech bluetooth audio receiver quality

  I bought a Logitech Bluetooth Audio receiver, and have run into a problem: When playing audio, it contains short hisses/clicks on higher tones or vocal+heavy instrumental music (Sound quality appears to be unclean). I'm not sure what could be the reason, but this only happens when I play from certain devices. My laptops (a Dell XPS Win7, and an Asus Eee seashell Win7) and my phone (Samsung Player 5) both have the problem. However, when I tried using a Samsung S2 phone, the audio was crystal clear. Seems that this could be something with Bluetooth transiting device.. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

• fstab mount after network initialization

  I'm automatically mounting a NFS with fstab. Sometimes the mount fails because the hostname of the NFS mount cannot be resolved (getaddrinfo failed). I'm assuming that this happens because the network initialization is slower than the mounts. Is there any way to initialize the network before mounting any devices? I'm already using _netdev as a mount option but this does not help. • boot failure trying to install linux distro from a cd

  Hoping someone can help me get this installation from a cd going. I'm using an older pc: hp pavillion 2.66Ghz, 512RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003. I reclaimed some an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working as its recognized in the bios (auto-detected) I downloaded a mini.iso of ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM] and I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CDROM. This old pc also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave, so the Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned cd with the linux distro. So, with these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Where do I go from here? Thanks.

• Remote desktop to multiple windows machines on a LAN with dynamic IP

  Is it possible to use remote desktop to connect to multiple computers inside a network that has a dynamic IP address? I use a netgear WPN824 router which has dyndns onboard - but I currently use No-IP to control a single computer that I use most frequently. Every so often I need to get onto a couple of other computers in the network, but don't know how to go about this without logging onto one computer, and then starting another RDC session from that machine. What I would like to be able to do is connect to my router, and be able to see a list of connected devices, and then choose which to remote desktop onto. - I appreciate this probably is not be possible, but any other suggestions are welcome!

• Sonicwall site-to-site can not access remote network

  I have 2 SonicWall devices (tz100) in 2 different geographical locations. They are connected to each other using site-to-site vpn connection and this works just great. Device A network - 192.168.1.0/24 Device B network - 192.168.2.0/24 When I connect to one device, I can access, from my computer, anything on that specific subnet. However, I am unable to view anything, from my computer, on the other network. Is there a setting somewhere that will forward my requests to the other subnet? Example - I VPN into Device A, but would like to get to a server which is on the Device B network (192.168.2.0/24)

  I have a trouble, configuring a home network. Here is how my devices are connected together: Internet     ? Wi-Fi Router ? MacBook     ? iMac ?ethernet cable? Synology NAS I have no ability to plugin NAS right into the Wi-Fi router. The problem is that MacBook does not see NAS, because they are in different networks — I configured Wi-Fi Router to serve 192.168.10.0/24 addresses, and configured iMac's ethernet connection to use 192.168.20/24 network. Is there a way to setup route from MacBook to the NAS?

• Laptop connects to other network but not to my home wireless

  My home network's wireless SSID is say "XYZ" I also have an ethernet wire from the same router. I have two laptops A and B Earlier both A and B were able to connect to my home internet through the ethernet and wireless. Suddenly, the laptop B can no longer connect to XYZ or through ethernet. When I do plug the wire, i get the connection icon all green but when I try to access any web page it errors out (page not found) But strangely laptop B connects to my neighbours wireless SSID "ABC". I have also tested laptop B with other networks and it connects fine. Laptop A and many other devices still connect fine with my home wireless "XYZ" Strange thing is when my laptop B connects wireless through XYz, it gets the IP address but then none of the browsers (chrome,firefox, IE) can show any web pages. What settings should I be checking on laptop B that is preventing it to connect to my home internet. Thank you

• How to add addtional disks to a Windows 2008 KVM based Guest?

  I have a Win 2008 KVM based guest VM running on a Ubuntu 10 host. It is a raw image of 22G. I want to add a "data" drive which would show up as "D:\" drive on the guest. I first created a raw image using: qemu-img create -f raw ~/vmdisk2.img 50G Then, tried attaching it using virsh attach-disk. When that did not work, I tried editing the xml file of the VM directly. Both did not seem to work. I would greatly appreciate any help on how to do this and what the best practice is. I want to keep the base image small, so that I can clone it (hopefully) and then attach necessary storage based on the application at hand.   I have some VHSs and vinyl records which I'd like to convert to DVDs and CDs, respectively. I have a couple of questions about how to hook the devices up to the computer. I've seen some RCA-to-USB cables on the Internet like this one. Will those work for connecting the VCR to the computer? And what program would I use to take that and save it as a video file? Can I connect the phonograph directly to the Line In port in my PC or do I need some amplifier or something in the middle? I'm using Windows 7 x64, if it matters.

• How to have 2 windows machines on the same network with the same IP address

  I have a custom made ADC device that is spitting out data by addressed UDP packets. I have that device plugged into a 4 port switch. I have one windows embedded standard 7 machine which is the normal recipient of that data. To be able to receive the data (Using LabVIEW) the windows network adapter IPv4 settings must have a static IP address that corresponds to the UDP packet destination. I would like to add a second windows machine (This one is just regular Win 7 Pro) to simultaneously catch the data, however with all devices connected to the switch, the Win 7 Pro machine recognizes an IP address conflict and will not take the setting for the required static IP address. (The network adaptor settings show that the correct value has been entered but ipconfig shows that it is not actually set.) Neither windows machine needs to transmit network data, they only need to be able to receive the UDP data from the ADC device. Is there any way to disable this IP address conflict detection 'feature' of windows networking?

• Restart my graphics card without rebooting?

  Wondered if it is possible to use DevCon to restart a display device as a stop-gap solution to artifacts left over from a graphics card malfunction? In particular it leaves my cursor very un-user-friendly: I found out the hardware ID of my display adapter through device manager (below) [(windows key + pause break) - device manager - display adapters - right click your display adapter - properties - details - hardware ids.] I tried the commands (opened with admin privileges) devcon restart "PCI\VEN_1002" and devcon restart =display but it always come back with No devices restarted.. Is it even possible to restart the graphics card without a system reboot?

• Disable RAID Controller

  I have some decent HP Proliants server that come with "HP Smart Array P410i Controller" enabled, I am using these boxes to set up a Hadoop cluster and I know, RAID is for sure a no-no for Hadoop since the application itself will take care of data redundancy and extra intelligence provided by RAID won't be helpful and might turn down the performance. I tried to disable the devices at the BIOS and the box cannot even access the disk afterwards. So I am assuming the controller is sitting between disks and mother board, and we have to turn it on and configure it to "level0" or something like that. I am wondering what should I do to "disable" the RAID functionality so it will fit into the Hadoop environment.

  What are my options to forward two USB connected phones to xen guest? I've read about PCI-passthrough http://www.wlug.org.nz/XenPciPassthrough, but I'm sure usb controller in the server isn't a pci card. There's device level forwarding, but I need to forward two devices, this here doesn't say how to do it: http://www.olivetalks.com/2008/02/03/usb-forwarding-on-xen-it-just-does-not-work/ Would something as simple as: usbdevice = [ 'host:xxx', 'host:yyy', ] work? I have 4 devices: /dev/sda (160GB) - installed debian on it /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd (all 500GB) - created a raid5 array with it Now I am not sure, how to go on. Is it usefull to create a LVM on the raid5 /dev/md0? How can I do this? Is there a good HowTo? Or can I just create filesystem on the raid5 and create different partitions?

• How can you configure the uPnP server on windows home server?

  I'm currently helping my parents with their home network set up while I'm home. I have a Synology NAS device which supports a uPnP server. I have a few MPEG-4 movies stored on the box, and simply enabling the uPnP server on the NAS streamed the video to some devices they have, including their Xbox 360 and Samsung television. They have a windows home server (HP MediaSmart.) I put one of the movies in the "Videos" folder of the device, and enabled sharing. It shows up on the television, but when played it produces an "unsupported file type" error. I have all of the transcoding settings disabled on the Synology device, so it should be streaming the same file. Is there some additional configuration I need to perform on the home server unit?

Is there a way for me to copy/save/transfer my "start menu" configuration, meaning the grouping and ordering of the elements on the Start screen, between user profiles? Is it in the registry? • Feedback on available mid-to-enterprise level desktop backup solutions [closed]

  I am involved in the creation of a new backup solution to replace our current Retrospect setup, which has become a significant time sink to administer. We have almost 200 desktop and some laptop clients, both Windows and OS X. We're only interested in products oriented around disk-to-disk, and would be integrate well with our current set of nine NAS devices as target storage. I'd just like some feedback from anyone out there, as it's sometimes difficult otherwise to find objective reviews of software at this level. Both data and time are important enough that we need a reliable solution which won't be prone to self-destruction as often as Retrospect. Bonus points for de-duplication, which might help squeeze more service time out of our NAS setup in terms of capacity. Currently considering Commvault and Netbackup. Many other products I've seen don't have an OSX client. Any thoughts?

• How can I enforce directory space limits in a OpenVPZ system?

  The title says it all. I have some programs on a server (centos4-openvz) that use a directory as temp directory - but pay no attention to the size it grows. I want to enforcee a limit, like this folder cannot exceed 300mb. I would use quota but OpenVZ does not support loop devices to mount a file as such. Any other solutions? (apart from scripting a periodic delete of files in the directory). Editing the application's code to implement such a functionality is not entirely out of the question - if it can be done easily and no other ways exist.. Its written in cpp - but I don't know how to implement it.

• Can't find a wireless access point's IP address after changing router IP/LAN settings

  I have a modem/router, Netgear DG834, and a wireless access point (AP), Netgear WG602. The AP is directly connected to the router. My old working configuration was: Router IP address : 192.168.0.1 Access point IP address: 192.168.0.10 My new configuration is: Router IP address : 192.168.1.1 Access point IP address: ???.???.???.??? I changed my router's IP address/LAN settings to set up a VPN with another Netgear router that had the same LAN configuration. The wireless network is still up and perfectly working, but I can't find the AP's IP address. I've tried broadcast ping but the AP won't respond. I looked at the router "attached devices", but it's not there. I've played around with Nmap and arp request but the AP is totally invisible. I can fix it by resetting it to factory settings, but I'm very interested in learning more about this problem. I'm also interested in network security and this fact of having an invisible AP well, it's something I'd like to understand.

• Bluetooth Connectivity that an error

  I have a bluetooth USB, every time I enter the bluetooth, bluetooth is active only a few seconds, after which it can not be used again In 'devices and printer' there is still a bluetooth but if you want to save the settings it can not, there are error message or bluetooth is revoked. I am using windows 7, whereas if use Windows XP smoothly no problems. This not only happens on my computer alone, my friend who has a build-in bluetooth also experienced the same thing with the same OS. Is there a patch / fix / update for its Windows? I've been brain-tweaking drivers for all but still can not.
