• Tracking down random BSOD on windows 7

  I have gotten a computer running windows 7 handed to me that randomly, several times a day, bsods with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124). Crashes happens regardless of load. I am running out of ideas for how to track this down. Analyzing the minidumps shows the crash to be in ntkrnlmp.exe/WMIADAP.exe System has plenty of power (600w) Ram checks out fine using memtest86+ over a weekend. System is clean inside. No dust build up. Temperatures stay low. As far as I know (and reliability history shows) no new drivers were installed for several months before the problems started. All drivers are now up to date. sfc /scannow reports the system as clean. CHKDSK reports the disks as clean Removing the AV (Avast) has no effect. Any more things that should be tried on windows 7 before I start replacing the hardware?

• Office 365 E3 with Exchange Hosted Encryption (EHE)

  I hope this is the right forum for posting this question. I have a client who wants to move to Office 365. They are currently running on a trial of Office 365 E3 plan. My staff are now also using Office 365 E3 via the internal use licences provided as part of the MS Cloud Partner benefits. We've search high and low, spoken to about 15 different people at Office 365 Support, as well as my local distributor's MS Product Manager, but we cannot seem to find out exactly how to purchase/subscribe to the Exchange Hosted Encryption (EHE) service, or how to configure/use it from Office 365. Does anybody out there have any insight into how we can setup and use the EHE service? Thanks! Stephen

• Dye Sub printer with specific prints remaining - can I command-line query this?

  Hey, I've got a Sony Dye-Sub printer that holds ink/paper sets - i.e. a very certain amount of ink and paper for ~200 prints. This information is available to me from within Control Panel Printers Preferences Printer Device Information (i.e. current 189 remaining prints). Any way I can perhaps get this information from the command line? I'd like to write a little program to tell me when the number of prints gets low (i.e. < 20), rather than suffer the annoying Windows "run out of paper" popup. I've found the Windows VBScript print utilities, but can't seem to find the request I need for this. Any suggestions? Jason

• Print Preview Blank IE8

  On a Windows XP, in IE8 print preview always appears completely blank except for header information. I can open the generated temp file in firefox and print it from there. I have tried browsing without addons to no success. I have tried re-creating the "%TEMP%\low" folder as described on the web, e.g. here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_xp/ie8-printing-does-not-work-preview-empty/920588e5-ccc4-4e24-83d6-606d5e3b1c70 ... all with no success.

• Server freeze - how to debug

  I am running a Debian virtual server with Apache, PHP, MySQL. There is just 1 website with very low traffic running but the server very often (almost everyday) freezes and does not respond. When this happens the server is unreachable from web browser or by SSH and I have to go to administration of my provider and perform server hard reset after this the server seems to work fine. • How do I get 480i resolution for an external monitor in Windows 7?

  I'm trying to get a laptop video signal to my really old television, so that I can play movies on it. But the TV won't accept the video signal. I found the manual online, and apparently the output has to be 480i. But I don't know how to do that -- Windows 7 will only let me set the resolution down to 800x600. Even if I get it down to 640x480- is that 480i or 480p? How do I tell the difference? How do I switch between them? How do I get the resolution down so low in the first place?

  Hi, Apologies if the question appears ambiguous, I have little experience in this area and was after some informed opinions. I am deploying a test scenario of a server/client network and need to make some choices for Server. The client will be a Windows system as it meets the requirements for the client, the server choice has more room for selection. From my experience with Linux in general and the appealing nature of open source for low cost, security etc and the availability and performance of database and web server programs I have been considering CentOS as a server choice. I have the ability to make most of the choices of what software / server packages I wish to install. This includes Active Directory (something I have no experience with). How well does this operate with Windows clients? Am I being too selective and creating unnecessary complication by setting out not to use a Windows Server OS?

• How to Disable Disk Quota When Checkbox is Grayed Out in Windows XP?

  I am logged in as Administrator on a computer that is removed from the domain, it is only in a workgroup. I was trying out different settings and turned on disk quota. I set the quota limit pretty low and didn't realize it would have an effect on the Admin acct. Now when I log in a temporary profile gets created and the option to remove the quota is grayed out. I am in Safe Mode right now and can't seem to un do the quota with the admin acct. Did I change another setting somewhere that striped away my rights to remove the quota? Does anyone have any ideas beyond reinstalling?

• My KDE very slow in certain operations

  I have a problem with my Linux installation. It seems that the KDE code that deals with directory windows is extremely slow (on both Dolphin and Konqueror). This happens both when I click on a directory icon and when I want to open/save a file from many KDE applications. The time the window takes to open can be one minute or more. The same happens when I right click on an icon. Looking at the CPU usage, this is very low (less than 10%). Am I the only one with this problem, or is it well known and maybe already fixed? Consider that I cannot update to a more recent version of OpenSuse. • How to manage preventive maintenance planning for external IT support?

  I am a bit puzzled by the way to handle server upgrade planning for software we maintain on remote sites. This is my case: I work for a software company that has many external clients. We are trying to be more Agile in our development so we plan to release small improvements every quarter and we wish to keep our clients informed of maintenance schedules. Instead of having angry clients that believe there ROI of our support plan is low, we want to be more proactive. Lets say we have 100 machines to take care of, is there some tool to assist me in planing the maintenance with clients? Right now I get a call from a client that is unhappy requesting we upgrade them, that is when we go into panic mode and start making calls. That is when I need to check my calendar, coordinate with the other guys, call a few times, change the date again and again until everyone is happy. Can this be done better?

• Debian Linux server hangs after a week or so

  I have 2 Debian Linux 6.0.4 servers that have a strange behaviour: after 5-7-10 days they hang. By this I mean the servers need to be restarted and before that ping won't answer. I've been struggling with this problem for a couple of months now and here's some thoughts/what I tried without being able to solve the problem. I changed the RAM on a server. Being 2 different servers I doubt that it could be something related to hardware as a 3rd identical server won't have this problem. I logged the server load and when it crashes the load is fine (quite low) I cannot find anything in the server logs, logs are fine till the server freezes. I don't have access to console unfortunately. While I have years of admin experience I have never encountered such an issue and right now I have no idea where else to investigate. If you have an idea of what I could try in order to fix the problem please share it with me:-)

  I wanted to build a single PC to fit all my needs, but since hardware virtualization support (Vt-d specifically) is a huge problem, I decided to build multiple single-use oriented computers. In this scenario I want these computers to be as minimal as possible. So the core of my question is: "Are there significant performance difference between chipsets?" I'm considering Sandy-Bridge i7 or i5 for my "game console" computer. And since I will use only one graphic card, one or two HDD, 4-8GB RAM and nothing else, I would be fine with a micro-ATX board with a Q67 (or some other low-end chipset).

• What causes memcache to delete keys?

  Our memcache install recently started removing keys, and we're not sure why. Large groups of keys vanish at the same time. Memcache reports that evictions are low to non-existent, and our app has no way to clear memcache (it can only delete specific keys). Even keys of which the app has no knowledge get deleted, so we're pretty convinced they're getting expired. However, our memcache configuration hasn't been touched in some time. Has anyone debugged an issue like this before, and if so, are there any steps you'd recommend we take? How flexible is memcache's expiration policy - is it possible that we're suddenly running into a criterion based on (say) write frequency to a key?

• Best LXDE based distro/distro that supports LXDE?

  Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed... I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. So, any good recommendations? I am fairly used to Ubuntu and the dpkg/apt commands, but am willing to learn. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs). Anyway as you can see I have a strong Lubuntu bias, but there are issues like: LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc) 64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit. Thank you so much

• Dell Studio XPS 16 Runs Hot

  Specs: 1920x1080 i7 1.6 GHz quad core 6GB RAM 1GB ATI Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive Love this laptop for many reasons, but it constantly runs hot (CPU is low 70s with basic tasks and often 80+ is not uncommon) and I'm finding it too much to deal with. The laptop feels very hot (almost too hot for a lap) and often gets so hot that the OS slows down or freezes altogether. I've tried cleaning it out and even replacing the thermal paste. I often use an external cooler, but it only helps 3-5 degrees and it's a pain to have to use. I've come to the conclusion that it just runs hot. I have two questions: What is to blame? The i7 processor, the gfx card, or is it just that this laptop has poor cooling? Does the Dell XPS 15 run cooler? I'm looking at replacing my current laptop, but I don't want to run into the same problem.

• What can cause peaks in pagetables in /proc/meminfo ?

  I have a gameserver running Debian Lenny on a VPS host. Even when experiencing a fairly low load, the players start experiencing major lag (ping times rise from 50 ms to 150-500 ms) in bursts of 3 - 10 seconds. I have installed Munin server monitoring, but when looking at the graphs it looks like the server has plenty of CPU, RAM and bandwidth available. The only weird thing I noticed is some peaks in the memory graph attributed to "page_tables" which maps to PageTables in /proc/meminfo but I can't find any good information on what this might mean. Any ideas what might be causing this? If you need any more graps, just let me know. The interrupts/second count is at roughly 400-600 during this period (nearly all from eth0). The drop in committed was caused by me trying to lower the allocated memory for the server from 512MB to 256MB, but that didn't seem to help.

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2?   Hi We need to set up a website which makes two or three large files publicly available - the files will be 1 or 2 terrabytes each. Although they will be public, in practise I expect only a relatively small number of scientists will want to download them. What is the best way to allow this? I've had a quick talk to a web-hosting provider (rackspace) and they suggested a hybrid solution. An entry-level managed server (we predict fairly low traffic for the website, but we do need to install some custom CGI software). Some cloud storage which hooks into Limelight Networks. This would host the large files, for download by FTP. It sounded OK to me but I know relatively little about server administration. Does it make sense? Thanks in advance, Mark

• Plug and Go NAS Storage

  My wife and I are separating. One of the things we need to extricate is the media we have accumulated over the years. So I am looking for a NAS solution that is a) relatively low-cost, b) reliable and c) easy for a non-geek to use (I don't want to be tech support). All it needs to do is hold our iTunes library, photos, course work and maybe some movies and TV shows that I currently have. She will be connecting via her Netbook. I have seen this thread but the reviews on Amazon aren't particularly favourable. Due to the need for simplicity, WHS and FreeNAS are none-starters. I need redundancy as if a single drive system was to die then she would lose her course work and photos. Is the ReadyNAS the only real solution out there?

• XenServer/Center: Shared SRs for hosts not in same pool?

  I would like to use the same SRs on XenServer hosts that are not able to be part of the same pool (because of not having the exact same cpu feature set, if I understand it correctly) in order to share templates, being able to (manually) start a host on another node, backing up running hosts on other hardware etc etc. The technology for SR can be any of iSCSI, NFS or CIFS, iSCSI would obviously be preferred. Trying to add an iSCSI volume renders a "This LUN is already in use as SR iSCSI - Shared Storage on pool xxxxxx.". Adding a NFS share on one XS host, creating a template there and then checking another XS host reveals they don't agree on used space etc. Coming from a vSphere world this is quite baffling, but if these are limitations then I will have to rethink some of the concepts for this low budget project.

• Can I increase the link speed of the RAS Server on our MS Win2k3 box?

  We are running a Win2K3 Server box, and I'm a remote employee that connects via VPN. I've been frustrated for some time by the connection speed over the VPN (the office HQ has a decent speed and I have a biz class connection here), and decided to do some checking today. This morning, I was dialed in and looked at the networking tab of the task manager, and I see that the adapter for the RAS Server (the box has 4 Gigabit adapters) has a speed that seems far too low. The speed for the RAS Server link hovers between 300 - 600 Kbps. The local connection (and others) all say 1 Gbps. Can I set this to a higher speed? Is this information accurate? But there is no any memory problems reported in munin monitoring: As you see system uses around 0.2G and 1G is available. So my question is: Is it xen specific problem, that real memory usage and memory usage that shows munin are different (I've never seen such problems oh real hardware machines)? Or maybe it is just monitoring problem, that can't catch moment when there is unusual high load and domU go down? And how I can to defeat this problem? it is really annoying to catch messages in e-mail that domU went down. Btw, such situation was when domU had 2G memory.

• How do I install and run Tomcat on port 80 as my only web server? (Rooted Ubuntu box)

  Hi All, tl;dr - I have a rooted linux box that I want to run tomcat on as a server (No Apache Web Server) how would you set this up avoiding common security pitfalls? I've written a Grails App that I want to run on a VPS I rent. The VPS has very little memory and I am using it for the sole purpose of running this application so I don't need the apache web server. This is my first venture into Server administration and I'm sure to fall into some well known traps. Should I use iptables to redirect requests from port 80 to 8080? Should I run tomcat as root or as it's own user? What configuration settings would be good for a low memory system expecting less than 10 concurrent users? Hopefully an easy one for you! Anyone who could link to a tutorial would be a personal hero destined for great things no doubt. Gav
