• How can you become a competent web application security expert without breaking the law?

  I find this to be equivalent to undercover police officers who join a gang, do drugs and break the law as a last resort in order to enforce it. To be a competent security expert, I feel hacking has to be a constant hands-on effort. Yet, that requires finding exploits, testing them on live applications, and being able to demonstrate those exploits with confidence. For those that consider themselves "experts" in Web application security, what did you do to learn the art without actually breaking the law? Or, is this the gray area that nobody likes to talk about because you have to bend the law to its limits?

• DPM 2007 clashing with existing SQL backup job

  I've recently installed a DPM2007 server on Server 2003 and have set up a protection group against a server 2003 server running SQL 2005 SP3. The SQL server in question has a full backup (as a sql agent job) once a day and transaction log backups hourly. These are zipped up and FTP'd to a server offsite by a scheduled task. Since adding the DPM job I'm receiving many error messages: DPM tried to do a SQL log backup, either as part of a backup job or a recovery to latest point in time job. The SQL log backup job has detected a discontinuity in the SQL log chain for database SERVER_NAME\DB_Name since the last backup. All incremental backup jobs will fail until an express full backup runs. My google-fu suggests that I need to change the full backup my sqlagent job is running to a copy_only job. But I think this means that I can't use that backup with the transaction_logs to restore the database if the building (including the DPM server) burns down. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious and thought I'd see what the hivemind suggests. It is an option to set-up a co-located DPM server elsewhere and have DPM stream the backup but that's obviously more expensive than the current set up. Many thanks in advance

• Parallelism implies concurrency but not the other way round right?

  I often read that parallelism and concurrency are different things. Very often the answerers/commenters go as far as writing that they're two entirely different things. Yet in my view they're related but I'd like some clarification on that. For example if I'm on a multi-core CPU and manage to divide the computation into x smaller computation (say using fork/join) each running in its own thread, I'll have a program that is both doing parallel computation (because supposedly at any point in time several threads are going to run on several cores) and being concurrent right? While if I'm simply using, say, Java and dealing with UI events and repaints on the Event Dispatch Thread plus running the only thread I created myself, I'll have a program that is concurrent (EDT + GC thread + my main thread etc.) but not parallel. I'd like to know if I'm getting this right and if parallelism (on a "single but multi-cores" system) always implies concurrency or not? Also, are multi-threaded programs running on multi-cores CPU but where the different threads are doing totally different computation considered to be using "parallelism"?

• Running WordPress and Ghost on Apache with mod_proxy

  I currently have three WordPress sites hosted on Apache with virtual host files to direct the right domain to the right DocumentRoot. Ghost (node.js) just came out and I've wanted to tinker with it and just play around on one of my spare domains. I'm not really interested in moving over to nginx so I'm trying to get Ghost working on Apache via mod_proxy. I've managed to get Ghost working on my spare domain, but I think there's a problem with my virtual host files, as all of my other domains start pointing to Ghost as well. Here are two virtual host files, one for my main WordPress site that works fine, and the second for Ghost. Domains removed and replaced with DOMAIN and DOMAIN2.   I've been googling around the last few days looking for a solid example of how to regex a log entry for desired data, which is then to be inserted into a database, but apparently my google-fu is lacking. What I am trying to do is track when an email is sent, and then track the remote mta response, specifically the dsn code.
