• focus() jQuery function doesn't work in Safari, but works fine on all other browsers?

  I have a search text field and search button, when button is clicked with default text in text field, or null value, an alert pops up and sets focus back on search text field. This works very well on all major browsers but not in safari. I tried it even with out jquery, but didn't work. When the focus falls on search text field, I have another jQuery function, is that the problem. • What do I use for a J2ee website?

  Not sure if I asked this correctly. I am trying to see what I need to create an website that uses MVC and that connects to legacy multiple databases, brining back those database info into one page. I wanted the site to be MVC but am not sure where to begin. Do I use Spring? What do I use for an server? Jboss and apache? Hibernate? I'm just kind of lost on how to proceed. It's not a straight forward a asp.net mvc or a php framwork. A major concern is the collection of data from multiple legacy databases and bringing that data back into one page. Thanks.

  I am working on an enterprise level product that is designed around SQL Server Express and specifically its features (views, concurrent users, stored procedures, CASE and IF statements). Though we don't use any advanced SQL Server features, the database size limit of 4GB in the Express edition may up being a limitation. A work-around is that customers can move to more full-featured versions of SQL Server. The problem is that SQL Server Express deployment is not easy, and the installer size is huge. This is a major drawback for someone looking to try our product. You don't want end-users to not buy a product because the download is huge. Does anyone have any recommendations of a database that has a smaller footprint but all the features of Express and which can be migrated to express?

• Question creating PDF document in Zend Framework

  I need to take a ZF rendered view and create a PDF that should look pretty much exactly the same, and email it. The major issue I have right now is getting the HTML created by the view into a string that I can then process with the Zend_PDF::parse method. The view I need to turn into a PDF is the result of a posted form. I've tried grabbing the contents of ob_get_contents into a string after a successful post, but for some reason its not in there. Should I press on with this angle? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I want a regular expression to match valid input into a Tags input field with the following properties: 1-5 tags Each tag is 1-30 characters long Valid tag characters are [a-zA-Z0-9-] input and tags can be separated by any amount of whitespace Here's what I have so far--it seems to work but I'm interested how it could be simplified or if it has any major flaws: \s*[a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30}(\s+[a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30}){0,4}\s* // that is: \s* // match all beginning whitespace [a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30} // match the first tag (\s+[a-zA-Z0-9-]{1,30}){0,4} // match all subsequent tags \s* // match all ending whitespace Preprocessing the input to make the whitespace issue easier isn't an option (e.g. trimming or adding a space).   NSString *myString = @"Hello"; NSString *myString = [NSString stringWithString:@"Hello"]; I understand that using method (1) creates a pointer to a string literal that is defined as static memory (and cannot be deallocated) and that using (2) creates an NSString object that will be autoreleased. Is using method (1) bad? What are the major differences? Is there any instances where you would want to use (1)? Is there a performance difference? P.S. I have searched extensively on Stack Overflow and while there are questions on the same topic, none of them have answers to the questions I have posted above.

• Mootools event leak

  The example to demonstrate the issue can be found here: link text The test shows a basic Mootools class that contains an element variable with a click event attached. There’s also a “cleanup” function to remove the event and nullify the element variable. My problem is that when I loop a thousand times to create the “LeakClass” instance and clean it up, it causes a major memory leak like there’s no tomorrow. I tested this on IE8 and Chrome. On the other hand what I’ve noticed is that if I comment out the line that adds the “click” event, the code doesn’t leak. Can somebody please help me structure the class/event in a manner that it doesn’t leak. Thanks in advance.

Modify the previous query to show all students, even if they have not registered for a class. You should have 14 rows. Students who are not registered will show NULL in output. I know this requires outer join of some sort but I'm not fully grasping these joins i've read multiple posts on here and other sites but can't seem figure it out.

• Would popup blockers stop a URL which pops up only when the user clicked on something?

  I'm currently building a web application that can can track a users actions on a particular website and pop a URL if the user takes certain actions, such as: first click, responding to a question by clicking yes / no, clicking a submit button, or exiting the site. It is important that these URLs are served to the user and are not blocked by pop-up blockers. It is my understanding that there are certain exceptions within the major internet browsers that allow pop-ups if they are served based on some user action, rather than serving an unsolicited pop? Is this true? How do I design this web application so that it can serve these pops (and not have them blocked).

• Stylesheets loading but styles not showing...

  Hi- I have a website I created in VS2010 and am trying to run with IIS7. My website starts in all major browsers but for some reason the styles are not applied even though I've confirmed using Firebug that the stylesheets have indeed loaded. Also, when I use the inspect tool to click on an element, I can see in the right-side box the specific styles that are supposed to be applied. I thought this might be a permissions issue but I think I've got those set properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

In Flash, when the icon is clicked, the text-area drops down a list of choices; it would look like this: [ ] [v] equals starts with ends with contains And when the user makes a choice from the list, the choice is displayed in the text area of the button and the list rolls up. [ starts with ] [v] I'm trying to convert my Flash app and am hoping to come up with a counterpart to this functionality. For space considerations on the form, a radio-button-group would be less than ideal. That's the major virtue of this Flash button -- it's very economical in its use of screen real-estate. I'm concerned b/c our server begins a new transaction for each request received, even if that request doesn't interact with the DB. We're seeing DB connections as a major bottleneck, so I'm wondering if I should take the time narrow the scope of my transactions. Searched everywhere and haven't been able to find a good answer. • IE 8 Error - What's the cause?

  I have two magento eshops that worked perfectly in the past on all major browsers except IE 7. After I installed WINDOWS XP on my computer and accessed my eshops with IE 8, I almost had a heartattack seeing that they aren't working as they should. Before installing Windows XP I was running Windows 7 and the websites were looking good on IE 8. Now, the same IE version, but on different operating systems, gives me headaches! Now, can someone explain me how to 'debug' the ie 8 parsing engine for seeing the errors and try to modify the templates? Thanks.

• Browser compatibility; Before or after uploading website to server?

  I am on the stage where I need to make my website cross-browser compatible. I need tips on how to get started. I have developed my website on firefox, so it works great with firefox. I guess I have to download a couple of versions of all major browsers now, right? Then just test each browser one by one? Should I do this before uploading the entire website onto a server or afterwards? All tips and SW which makes this easier is appreciated. • Model association changes in production environment, specifically converting a model to polymorphic?

  Hi everyone, I was hoping I could get feedback on major changes to how a model works in an app that is in production already. In my case I have a model Record, that has_many PhoneNumbers. Currently it is a typical has_many belongs_to association with a record having many PhoneNumbers. Of course, I now have a feature of adding temporary, user generated records and these records will have PhoneNumbers too. I 'could' just add the user_record_id to the PhoneNumber model, but wouldn't it be better for this to be a polymorphic association? And if so, if you change how a model associates, how in the heck would I update the production database without breaking everything? .< Anyway, just looking for best practices in a situation like this. • How to migrate a codebase from one svn repo to another preserving history?

  I have a branch in a badly structured svn repo that needs to be stripped out and moved to another svn repository. (I'm trying to clean it up some). If I do an 'svn log' and not stop on copy/rename I can see all 3427 commits that I care about. Is there some way to dump the revisions out, short of writing some major scripts? I would follow the advice in this question but this branch has been moved all over the place and I would like to preserve the moves as well. Any ideas?

I could successfully set the focus for first element by using $(":input:visible:first").focus(); or $(':input:enabled:visible:first').focus(); , according to jquery, set focus on the first enabled input or select or textarea on the page . I tried to use something like $('select:first').focus(); or $("select").first().focus(); or $(':visible:first').focus(); or $('enabled:visible:first').focus(); or other variations I could think of, but have not succeeded. Could anyone help me on this problem? I am a beginner for JQuery. I would like this function to work for all major browsers. Thank you very much!

• CSS float problems, works in IE, doesn't work in Chrome/FF.. I'm probably doing something wrong

  I'm not terribly well-versed in CSS.. and don't know all of the major quirks yet. Maybe someone can help me. I've set up an image showing my code, a diagram of my DIVs, and examples of how it looks in IE versus Chrome/FF Can someone direct me to the proper way to go about this? It works fine in IE, but in Chrome and FF, one of the images is escaping its container, and the "content block" as I call it is going underneath the image it's supposed to be next to. Each of the components has a css class despite my diagram saying there's no css.. currently there's just some basic styling for those (padding, text-indent, etc). Thank you

• Are browsers permitted to render <ol>s in any order?

  As I understand the XML spec, the significance of the order of child elements is not guaranteed. XML parsers tend to keep child elements in the same order as they occur in the XML document, but they are under no obligation to do so. If that's so, then are browsers free to render the <li>s in an <ol> in a different order than they occur in the XHTML? Or is it specified in the XHTML spec somewhere that order has to be preserved? I realise that all major browsers will respect the order of my <li>s. I'm just interested in the academic question of whether or not they are technically obliged to.

• iPhone App/Java Server Struct Data Issue over WiFi

  I currently have an iPhone app that communicates with a C++ server running on a computer, over WiFi. This app is sending its data (x,y coordinates) in a c-struct to the server. For further development, we would like the iPhone application to communicate directly with a java server, however the major issue is that java does not have the ability to emulate or use a c-struct. What would be the best way to send data (x,y coordinates) between the two devices? I can already establish a connection between the two devices. More specifically how I would receive the data and process it on the Java end. Thanks for your help, Alex

• Is there an HTML code that can make my background picture transparent and my text non-transparent?

  Okay so I've been typing some HTML code for a technology class that I need to satisfy for my Education major. This is what i have for my background: body { background-image:url('islandbeach.jpg'); background-repeat:repeat; background-position:center; background-attachment:fixed; background-size:cover; } Now, I want to make my background transparent or faded so I can see the text and the other image that I have. The background is too colorful to be able to see the words without having to squint. Are there any HTML codes that can do this for me? • Why is casting and comparing in PHP faster than is_*?

  While optimizing a function in PHP, I changed if(is_array($obj)) foreach($obj as $key=$value { [snip] } else if(is_object($obj)) foreach($obj as $key=$value { [snip] } to if($obj == (array) $obj) foreach($obj as $key=$value { [snip] } else if($obj == (obj) $obj) foreach($obj as $key=$value { [snip] } After learning about ===, I changed that to if($obj === (array) $obj) foreach($obj as $key=$value { [snip] } else if($obj === (obj) $obj) foreach($obj as $key=$value { [snip] } Changing each test from is_* to casting resulted in a major speedup (30%). I understand that === is faster than == as no coercion has to be done, but why is casting the variable so much faster than calling any of the is_*-functions?
