• What are the benefits of running chef-server instead of chef-solo?

  I am looking at automated deployment solutions for my team and have been playing with Chef for the past few days. I've been able to get a simple web app up an running from a base Red Hat VM using chef-solo. Our end goal is to use Chef (or another system) to automatically deploy application topologies to the cloud as we run builds. Our process would basically run like so: Our web app code, dependencies, and chef cookbooks are stored in SCM A build is executed and greats a single package for images to acquire and test against The build engine then deploys new cloud images that run a chef client to get packages installed. The images acquire the cookbooks from SCM or the Chef server and install everything to get up and running What are the benefits and/or use cases for getting a Chef Server running? Are there any major benefits to have a Chef Server hold and acquire the cookbooks from SCM vs. using chef-solo and having a script that will pull the cookbooks from SCM?

• ATI radeon hd 5450 Graphics Card Issues

  I have an Old Dell Optiplex 755 SFF with an Intel Core 2 Processor (windows 7). Now This can hold a PCI-E x16 port. Now I got an ATI Radeon HD 5450 low profile. I plugged and played and it fits without a hitch, the software installed too! , now for the graphics well... It doesn't really work at all as it seems to freeze at the moment that it loads on the windows logo. It loads into safe mode so I'm not really sure what the problem is. Any ideas, I read the dell forums and they should be somewhat compatible... with the specs so I'm at a loss here. and I am a novice here. Ideas? Edit I have tried to reset the cmos,no luck there. I have tried to move the ram as well. nothing big happened.

• Sync iPhone applications in iTunes

  Suppose I have one the one hand one iTunes library on a PC used to sync Outlook contacts and calendar plus on the other hand one iTunes library on a Mac that syncs music, podcasts, apps, ringtones, etc. Both libraries are based on iTunes 9.0.2. It turns out that the iTunes library on the PC always tries to sync apps and ringtones as well. Unfortunately, this boils down to deleting apps and ringtones from the iPhone because the apps are not part of the iTunes library on the PC. After unchecking the checkbox to sync apps and ringtones and plugging the iPhone into the Mac the checkbox is also unchecked on the Mac. It seems as if the settings for syncing apps and ringtones are stored on the iPhone rather than in the particular iTunes library. Whenever syncing apps and ringtones is active on one machine it is also active on the other and vice versa. How can I make the PC ignore apps and ringtones and only sync contacts and calendar?

  My embedded Linux device have 2 partitions: small root partition containing OS. big data partition which uses ext3 I want to encrypt the data partition by using encrypted file system. I don't want loose any data of the partition. Size of the root partition is too small to hold all data of the data partition. It is not possible to use any external data storage. Is there any tools that can convert filesystem of the data partition from ext3 to encrypted fs without copying all files to other place?

  Has anyone ever transcoded music from a high-quality aac to an mp3 (or vice-versa). The internet is full of people who say this should never be done, but apart from the theoretical standpoint that you can only lose information, does it matter in practise? is the difference perceivable, except on studio-equipment? does the re-encoding actually lose much information? If, p.e., high frequences are chopped away by the initial compression, those frequencies aren't there anymore, so this part of the compression-algorithm won't touch the data during the second compression. Am i wrong?

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a product like this but that is physically mountable internally rather than on a cable? I'm planning on building a super low profile "gateway" pc that is dedicated to handling internet traffic in my home. I have a great 1U rackmountable chassis for an ITX motherboard, but I need the hard drive real estate for the additional NIC required to run a gateway (one onboard and one PCI). So the plan is to use a small 8GB USB Jump Drive for the OS inside the box (as to not have one hanging out the back. And although it's racked, I still don't want the jump drive flopping around internally, so I want it fixed somehow. I have an alternative idea where by I use a flush mount zap strap saddle and a zip tie to hold it in place, but that seems kind of like a hack.

  I want to create a voip service. I have installed asterisk-1.4 on a dedicated remotely hosted debian lenny distro. I made a sip.conf and extensions.conf so as to place a call between two sip phones(i am using xlite 3.0) installed in some other Windows PC. Whenever i switch this phones the asterisk console shows that Registration from '"1000"<sip:[email protected]>' failed for '122.168.10.254' - Peer is not supposed to register Where xx.xx.xx.xx is the server's IP. i.e my sip phones are unable to register with the asterisk server. • What is the best software to capture full-screen 3h programming session in Windows?

  Hi, I'm planning a laboratorial experiment to assess behavior of groups when programming using some tools under study. For that, I'll need to capture their entire screen to disk. Mostly, what will be displayed is code, so I'm not to worried with image quality. However, it's paramount that the team is not able to stop the recording by accident, and the tool should be rebust enough to hold at least 3h of video. If possible, it would be nice for researchers in other rooms to "watch" the video as it is recording. Actually, this last requirement reminded me that I could use a VNC recording software, and install a VNC client in each laboratory computer. Anyway, what is your experience with this? Which software do you recommend? Thanks.

• How can I prevent my volume from changing when initiating a Skype call?

  I already know about the option in Control Panel Sound Communications, so please don't bother pointing me there. I am using the Skype Modern UI app and whenever I start a call, it lowers the volume of anything else that I have active. How can I resolve this issue? Also, not sure if this is related, but any Modern UI music apps also lower their own volume when they are not in the foreground. • Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

  I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). However this method seems to give you odd permissions, like this: http://i43.tinypic.com/15y82v4.png Hence I wondered if anyone knows what the best method is to restore files and folders after a clean install. N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk). • Large Users Profile - Windows 7 - Machine running slowly

  I have the MD of a client of ours who has a Windows 7 Profile that is currently 14GB thanks to Videos/Music and Documents. The first thing we did was to switch from roaming to local. What I need to know is now the profile is local am I wasting my time by reducing it any further? Does it really make a difference to performance having a large local user profile?   My Vaio VPCEA1BGN has Memory Type: DDR3 [2GB] PC3-10600 DDR3 [1GB] PC3-8500, DDR3 (non-ECC). There is no extra free slot now. I am planning to change one ram to 4GB. which one RAM i should remove now. I am still confused over the ECC types. Any suggestion while i am buying the ram?. I am looking into Corsair or Transcend. • How do I enable SELinux when booting a ramdisk from a CD/DVD?

  I have a bootable DVD which boots the same Kernel as the Hard Drive (which uses SELinux). I have copied /etc/selinux and all kernel modules to my ramdisk, and have tried various combinations of selinux=1 and selinux 1 with enforcing 1 and enforcing 0. as Kernel boot parameters. All files contained in the checkpolicy, libselinux, policycoreutils, selinux-policy and selinux-policy-targeted rpms have also been copied into the ramdisk tree. After the system boots from the ramdisk, I check dmesg: % dmesg | grep -i selinux Kernel command line: initrd=idrd.img ramdisk_size=110476 selinux=1 SELinux: Initializing. • Won`'t read Unicode characters over NFS mount ?

  Hello, I'm getting this strange issue when trying to play mp3's containing unicode characters ( accents ) over an NFS on OSX, it's all good over AFP, but I'm setup with NFS because it's a linux server on the other end . This is my disk utility setup : nfs://192.168.1.112/Music advanced mount parameters : -P , nolocks nosuid The strange thing is that I can see those files in the finder ( with the accents .. ) but I cant play them !! So Im wondering if it's an unicode issue, since I can see the files properly or a permission issue since I can't play them, but them it wouldn`t make sense that I can't play ONLY the files containing accents .. help ?? • Mac OSX application running but window is not visible

  greatful for any assistance as this is driving me nuts.. I'm running an application on my macbook pro, and since yesterday I can't see the application's main window. It's icon is showing in the doc and it's options are showing in the top menu bar on the desktop. The program is running normally in all other respects as far as I can tell (its an audio sampler which I am triggering via an external pedal, so I can tell its working). The window did show up once in Expose but now it is not showing up there either (no idea why). I've tried adding the application to every space in 'Spaces' and also removing the preferences file but neither of those helped. I have also reinstalled the application. I really need this back for a music project so any help would be massively appreciated, cheers!

• Bash Script to Back Up Backs Up Itself

The problem is, that it also tries to backup the tar.gz backup file, even though I am storing the backup in /tmp and omitting /tmp from the backup. • Should I convert my AAC M4A files to MP3?

  Due to Apple, I have a large majority of my music files in the AAC M4A format. They do NOT have DRM so I don't have to worry about that. I'm getting tired of Apple products and really want to switch to a different brand player (and something more compatible with Linux). It appears most MP3 players support...well...MP3 and not AAC. Should I convert my library to be free of Apple and open to other players? Is this a lossless conversion? Can it be lossless? If I will lose quality, I'm not interested. Am I even doing the right thing? AAC is the better format, but I'm not seeing a lot of support for it yet. I'll be honest and say that I need some education in this department. Any helpful advice is most welcome.

  What is the "box mode" (for a lack of a better word) in Firefox? How can I exit it again? If I hold down the Ctrl key and left click while the cursor is over some element on a page it becomes boxed: Firefox seems to go into some special mode. What is this mode for? How can I go back to normal mode? Installed add-ons in Firefox: BetterPrivacy 1.29, NoScript 1.9.0.6 and SQLite Manager 0.4.7. (Microsoft .NET Framework Assistent 1.0 is disabled.) • RHEL5 + Awesome WM - How do i fix mod4 inversion (acts like mod4 is always pressed)

  I built and installed Awesome WM on RHEL5. I have problem with mod4 acting like its always pressed. ie every time i hit "Enter" it acts like Mod4+Enter was hit. I have to hold down mod4 key (I remapped it to Caps_Lock) to actually send through just a Enter. How do i fix this? PS: If i change the WM this problem doesnt exist. yes. I do. It is mostly tab configs though. I didnt change key combos. Also, the version of awesomeWM i compiled is 3.1.1 (had trouble getting deps for the latest AwesomeWM on Rhel5)

• VMWare Headphone Issue

  I am running VMWare Workstation Version 7 on a Windows 7 partition on a Macbook Pro. I have built a virtual XP machine within vmware to run some old music programs. The sound from my virtual machines comes out of my macbook speakers but the volume is not controllable using my macbook volume controls, only by using the volume control on the XP machine. My problem is that i need to use headphones, and when i plug a headphone jack into my macbook, the sound from my vmware virtual machines still comes out of the macbook speakers. I am baffled.   I pay monthly for a website hosting service that provides me with PHP and FTP support. I can upload my files and create directories and such. Now, I am wondering... If I upload a folder full of images.. or music.. basically personal stuff to my website and name it 'junk1234' can other people find it? Or even search engines? If so, How would I restrict any but those who know the folder name from seeing files in it? Possibly httaccess files? I also have cpanel installed.

• Converting mp3 to ogg, suggestive?

  I'm thinking about converting my mp3 based music library to ogg, due to ogg being a free and open standard format (I guess there are other reasons too). As far as I know there's a chance of losing some sound quality when converting mp3 to ogg and vice versa (?). Would you suggest converting mp3 to ogg, or is it such a bad idea that I'd have to rip all CDs to ogg instead of converting? (if this would turn up I'd rip to flac anyway I guess). How would I be able to convert mp3 to ogg the easiest way, copying ID3-Tags too? (on a *nix-based environment) Best regards!

• Windows 8 can't open any modern UI app

  I just upgraded my machine with Windows 7 Pro x64, to Windows 8 Pro x64, with the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. Everything went great, but none of the Modern UI Apps open, and they do not show any error messages or warnings, they just close right away I opened them. I tried to open Skydrive, Windows Store, Photo App,Music App, Bing, Videos , Finances and all the available Modern UI apps on my screen My screen resolution is 1080p, so it is not a resolution issue, I'm using a Windows account , but i switched to Local account but didn't solved the issue. I ran Windows Update and updated my nVidia video drivers. I also tried an app called "Metro App Troubleshooter" without luck

• Make windows vista file explorer act normally

  Is there some file I can remove or something I can do to globally ensure that windows visa/xp/etc doesn't do annoying things? Annoying things: 1) Hide the file extension 2) All these "meta" columns I could care less about in "details" view (rating, album, date taken, Assistant's name, Artist, 35mm focal length, City, Other City, etc...). All I want are Name, size, date created, date modified, and file extension. MAYBE file chmod settings. 3) That garbage in the left pane known as "favorite links." (Documents, desktop, photos, music, etc...) 4) Switching between detail view, large icon view, thumbnail view, list view, and tiles when I goto differnt folders, all I want is detail view, with the same columns every time. That's it. I shouldn't have to get third party software to make my file system browseable, but if I need to so be it... Why are all these settings buried away? It feels like I have to apply them onto each folder every time.

• Moving Windows 7 profile to new user

  I have a laptop which I've been using as part of a corporate network with an AD login (and associated local profile). The laptop is loaded with Windows 7 Ultimate. I need to remove the laptop from this domain and, to start this process, I have already configured a local user on the box for me to use moving forward (granting this user the same local admin rights as the AD user). I'd like to migrate all the files, settings, etc from the local AD profile to the new non-AD profile. Is there a simple way to do this? Anything built into Win 7? As far as basic files I can probably just manually copy all the documents, pictures, music, desktop, favorites, etc... But is there a more streamlined way to move profile information? -Kevin
