• Moving Windows 7 profile to new user

  I have a laptop which I've been using as part of a corporate network with an AD login (and associated local profile). The laptop is loaded with Windows 7 Ultimate. I need to remove the laptop from this domain and, to start this process, I have already configured a local user on the box for me to use moving forward (granting this user the same local admin rights as the AD user). I'd like to migrate all the files, settings, etc from the local AD profile to the new non-AD profile. Is there a simple way to do this? Anything built into Win 7? As far as basic files I can probably just manually copy all the documents, pictures, music, desktop, favorites, etc... But is there a more streamlined way to move profile information? -Kevin

  Hi! Once upon a time, my pc suite had a function to prepare ringtones and upload them to the E65. Now I find myself with the all-new Nokia PC Suite 7.1 and I cannot find anything which resembles that function. I used to select a midi file, add some options, listen to a preview, and then upload it. It would appear among the ringing tones when customizing profiles. I tried this "Nokia Music" which is linked from the PC Suite, but it won't recognize the headset. What can I do?

• Super-silent (mid tower) case and fan combo

  I want to build a HTPC for music/video/blu-ray playback (no gaming). I don't need an expensive HTPC case but just want to go with a standard medium tower case. However, I want it to be super silent so it doesn't make any annoying fan/disk noises when I watch movies. Ideally, it shouldn't make any noticeable noise at all. I understand that choosing a board, CPU and graphic card that run cool and don't consume a lot of power is important for designing a quiet machine, and I think I got that covered. However, there are so many choices in regards to cases, fans and power supplies that it's hard to get started. What are your recommendations for a case/fan (cpu+case)/power supply combination that run absolutely silent and can cool a standard Intel system with a low-power (possibly passively cooled) graphic card? I'm usually a fan of Antec cases, would an Antec Mini P180 be a good starting point? If so, which case fans, CPU fan and power supply would you recommend?

  I have a reformatted Mac mini containing only a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.0.4. The Apple boot loader as been removed, so I can't hold down option, or the c key to get it to reboot form the install DVD. I do have an external drive (with both a usb and firewire interface available) with a bootable cloned OS X system on it. What steps do I need to go through to in order get grub to see the external drive, and to boot from it so that I can reformat the internal disk as an OS X drive?

I have copied /etc/selinux and all the kernel modules to my ramdisk, and have tried both selinux=1 and selinux 1 as Kernel boot parameters.   I have an external Lacie hard drive connected via USB to my Macbook Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have nothing but music on the external drive with every album sorted in it's own individual folder and have changed all of the individual folder icons to display the album art of the songs from the album inside. I want to reformat my laptop, but I'm afraid if I do that, the album art will disappear if it's stored on a system file within the main hard drive OS. My question is this, is the information which tells the OS to display the album art listed in a hidden system file on the external Lacie drive or my laptop hard drive and if I reformat will I have to reassociate all of the album art to the folders on the external or will it keep it's associations.   What paths are guaranteed to exist on a Windows Server 2008 R2 instance? A client is requiring that some instructions specify exact paths in all cases. (The person executing said instructions is not supposed to have to decide on any path themselves, even when the path makes absolutely no difference.) So I need to know what paths I can rely on to be there. It's fine with me if they involve environment variables, but they need to be variables guaranteed to hold an existing path. (That is, no modification to a path that doesn't exist possible.) Or are there no guaranteed paths?

  I'm trying to find information how do we take a screenshot on Windows 7 that will actually create a screenshot file like .png in to your desktop like on mac where you can do it by press Command+Control+Shift+4. In windows all I know is that I can do it by press press = Windows captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. or for the Active windows I can just do hold and press = Windows captures only the currently active window and copies it to the clipboard. Right now I'm using maComFort which it gives me functionality of Mac like keyboard that I can take screenshot in such the same way with Mac OS X but really it changes many of the key in my keyboard in the way I don't like. So I wonder if there is a better way?

• Recover from a recover partition when F11 doesn't work and windows is corrupt

  I have someones presario V3000 laptop. It has a D drive which is the recovery partition. The user brought it to me and windows would no longer even boot up. I could only reload XP and try to find a way to recover from the recovery partition. However haven't been able to. I read, hold F11 down when booting up, but that didn't do anything, and the other item I read is to create the CDs from the software installed in the OS from the factory. Well that is the OS that went corrupt and is no longer there. A new reloaded version of XP is there now. Is there still a way I can either create recover CD's/DVD's or boot from the recovery partition?

• iPhone 3G S sync services problem

  When I try and synchronise my iPhone with iTunes, I get a dialog informing me that "syncing has been disabled on this computer". (I've never disabled syncing myself, and it worked perfectly fine a day ago) Music synchronises fine, as do videos, however, my contacts do not. Google Contacts no longer appears in the list to choose from, and the select box is empty. When I choose to re-enable syncing, iTunes informs me that "iTunes was unable to load provider data from Sync Services". I've followed several steps I've found on the internet, including deleting the C:\Users\Ryan\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Sync Services directory, but to no avail. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Is there a Service (in the Windows-form-of-daemon sense) that I accidentally disabled?

  I am currently using xmodmap for remapping keys like Caps Lock on my keyboard. However, my keyboard has a bunch of keys on the top that are rarely used (Multimedia keyboard with buttons like Internet, Music, Next song, Mute etc) I want to remap these keys to specific commands (Not keys). For example: Pressing the Internet button should fire up my Firefox (/usr/bin/firefox)(which happens only in Windows for me) Also I need to map a specific button to xkill. One of the "nice to have" features would be the ability to pause or lower the volume on the office jukebox if an incoming call is detected. We currently run a linux jukebox which plays music out of the speakers using mpd and can be controlled by the mpc client. Question -- what do I do to: Use my mouse cursor to click on a character-position in the current line of the terminal, and have the terminal's cursor jump to that spot? Typically, you have to hold down an arrow key to move to the correct cursor position. If you're pasting in a long string of text at the shell prompt, or working in an editor like VI, this can take a long time. I know editors have other navigation keys like jump-words, but I like my mouse cursor.

  I have a whole bunch of domains with my current web host and when i got the package i got it with a few gig of web space and a bunch of mysql databases but times have changed and now and i don't use the hosting im paying for, and i just my host as a DNS server to forward everything else where. The process of removing the host is going to require me to transfer all the domains to another package etc... which is going to cause disruption so my question is: Who is the best provider for DNS only? I don't want any space or mail just someone to hold the domains and let me set any DNS options I want (A/MX/CNAME records for everything, even possibly the ability to point my domains at my own DNS server).

  I know that, technically, an individual Windows XP directory can hold an immense number of files (over 4.29 billion, according to a quick Google search). However, is there a practical ceiling where too many files in one directory starts having an impact on reads to those files? If so, what factors would exacerbate or help the issue? I ask because my employer has several hundred XP machines in the field at client sites, and the performance on some of the older ones is getting "sludgy." The machines download and display client-defined images, and my supervisor and I suspect that our slacktastic approach to cache management could be to blame. (Some of the directories have tens of thousands of images in them.) I'm trying to gather evidence to support or contest the theory before spending time on a coding fix.

  I use Finale with the Garritan sounds to convert my music into WAV files; after that I manually load each one into Audacity and select all use the "normalize" effect (with default settings) manually select the silence at the beginning of the file and delete it manually select the silence at the end of the file and delete it finally export the whole thing as an MP3 (with specific tag data) This gets tedious, especially as I work on a ten-movement piece with six part-prominent rehearsal "tapes" to accompany the full-score rendition. And there are too many variations in what's going on for me to trust AutoHotKey for this one. Is there a way to script Audacity, or is there another toolchain that would do what I want? I'm running on a WindowsXP laptop with cygwin installed. Thanks!

  I'm looking at purchasing a Xbox360 because I've wanted to catch up with the Halo trilogy. Does the cheap Arcade edition console support Halo 2 and Halo 3? Would I be able to save my game progress in single player? Would I be able to play online in typical maps? Would I be able to play games using the DVD drive or do I have to download everything? Does the tiny HDD hurt even if I don't download any games, trailers or music? Are there any other differences in comparison to the Xbox360 Pro? I have a regular TV that uses the composite cable, so I don't need the HDTV support in the Pro edition.

• VirtualBox - Mac OSX host Win7 guest - no Internet access for guest VM

  I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network.   I have a (elderly) colleague who has forgotten the password to his laptop - he generally signs in as Administrator, but can't remember the password, and has asked my help. He says the laptop contains some important data. What are my options? Thanks for any help. EDIT: I have just got hold of the machine and not all is as I was told... The password is not the problem... Before the login box appears I get an error message relating to savedump.exe: The instruction at "0x0..." referenced memory at "0x0...". The memory could not be written. Then when I login using the proper credentials, It logs me in for a tiny second and then logs me out again and 'saves my settings'. Any ideas on this one?

• ThinkPad T400 backlight doesn't always turn on when booting from battery

  I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T400, which I've owned for about a year. A while back, I noticed a problem in which the LED backlight would not always turn on when booting from battery. Usually, if I hold the power button down until the BIOS screen shows up, the backlight turns, but sometimes even that doesn't work. If I just press the power button and let it go right away, the backlight usually doesn't turn on. This happens before the OS (I dual-boot Linux and Windows) gets a chance to boot - the BIOS screen itself is displayed without the backlight if it fails to turn on, so the problem isn't at the OS level. Any ideas? Thanks!

• How can I share a Windows 7 library with anonymous access without using a Homegroup?

  The "homegroup" feature is useless, because it requires a password, and therefore doesn't support anonymous, no-hassle access to shares from devices such as my Sony Bravia TV and non-Windows7 machines. So I turned off homegroup and reverted to the standard shared folders protocol. I'd like to share my Music "Library", so I can play files from my TV through the Surround Sound System, but there seems to be no option to share a library folder other than through a homegroup. I don't want to have to individually share the folders that belong to the library, because that would defeat the purposes of the library, which is to manage which folders are included in the library while also providing an easily accessible view of them all at once. Does anyone know how to share a Windows 7 library without that useless homegroup feature?

We will be completely replacing the old 512 MB modules. Will there be any performance difference between installing 4 modules @ 1GB vs. 2 modules @ 2GB?
