• putty output screen too small?

  I'm having strange problem with my putty console. I'm establishing connection over ssh to my home computer [ windows 7 + freesshd server ]. Everything works just fine, but I'm getting this tiny screen with output, I can resize it of course, but the content is still in small box [ content doesn't resize ] I've tried to change the number of columns and rows in properties, but it didn't change anything. The same thing is with cygwin client.

• Vim configuration slow in Terminal & iTerm2 but not in MacVim

  Ideally, I want to use Vim from Terminal or iTerm2. However, it becomes unbearably slow so I had to resort to using MacVim. There is nothing wrong with MacVim, however my workflow would be much smoother if I used only Terminal/iTerm2. When its slow Loading files, in particular Rails files takes about 1 - 1.5s. Removing rails.vim decreases this time to 0.5 - 1s. In MacVim this is instantaneous. Scrolling through the rows and columns via h, j, k, l. It progressively gets slower the longer I hold down the keys. Eventually, it starts jumping rows. I have my Key Repeat set to Fast and Delay Until Repeat set to Short. After 10 - 15 minutes of usage, using plugins such as ctrlp or Command-T gets very laggy. I'd type a letter, wait 2 - 3s, then type the next. • Roughly how long should an "ALTER TABLE" take on an 1.3GB INNODB table?

  I'm trying to optimize a table that hasn't been optimized in a long time. It has around 2.5 million rows with 1.3 GB of data and a 152 MB index. I started optimizing it about 15 minutes ago and I have no idea how long it will take. The server is reasonably robust (quad xeon with 4GB ram) and has a 500MB innodb buffer pool size. Should I expect this to take minutes, hours or days?

• Huge excel sheet taking too long to update links or calculate formulae

  I have Excel sheet with 5000 rows and columns till AY (size 12MB). Except for the first 6 columns, rest contain either vlookups or formulae. All the vlookups are in separate Excel sheet. I have changed the Excel setting to manually update the links and calculate formulae. Now everytime I try to update the links, either the Excel sheet hangs or it takes something like 15 minutes. Any ideas on how I can get it done quickly.

  I was requested to split a MySQL in two, it's kind of a horizontal partition, in which some rows correspond to one site, and some other correspond to another site. But they want to split it in two DBs in the same MySQL server. I'm no DB expert but I guess keeping them in the same MySQL server with the same amount of memory and processor and the same platform won't improve things. What we're trying to avoid is the "Too many connections" problem.

• joining text files with 600M+ lines

  I have two files huge.txt and small.txt. Huge has around 600M rows and it's 14Gigs, each line has four space separated words (tokens) and finally another space separated column with a number. Small has 150K rows with a size of ~3M, a space separated word and a number. Both Files are sorted using the sort command, with no extra options. The words in both files may include apostrophes (') and dashes (-). The deisred output would contain all columns from the huge.txt and the second column (the number) from small txt where the first word of huge.txt and the first word of small.txt match. My attemtpts below failed miserably with the following error: cat huge.txt|join -o 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.2 - small.txt > output.txt join: memory exhausted What I suspect is that the sorting order isn't right somehow even though the files are pre-sorted using: sort -k1 huge.unsorted.txt > huge.txt sort -k1 small.unsorted.txt > small.txt Problems seem to appear around words that have apostrophes (') or dashes (-). I also tried dictinoary sorting using the -d option bumping into the same error at the end. I see two ways out of this but don't know how to implement any of them. 1) Any tips how to sort the files in a way that the join command considers them to be sorted properly? 2) I was thinking of calculating MD5 or some other hashes of the strings to get rid of the apostrophes and dashes, and do the sorting and joining with the hashes instead of the strings themselves an dat the "translate" back the hashes to strings, but leave the numbers intact at the end of the lines. Since there would be only 150K hashes it's not that bad. What would be a good way to calculate individual hashes for each of the strings? Some AWK magic? See file samples at the end. Approaches I'm aware of: Turn Prisoner numbers into text by having ="24601" and ="0.50" Only select rows 2 onwards as data, and then add in the labels once the graph has been created? Approaches that don't appear to work: Ask Excel to format the first row's numbers as text.

  What I need to do is a program that given (as a command line argument) a directory with more directoreies inside, and 4 Pics inside of each dir, the program makes a thumbnail of the 4 files and glues them together (2 rows, 2 columns) and renames that image to the name of the directory. • How to duplicate form control's checkbox in Excel 2007 with "TRUE" "FALSE" text

  For example I made check box in A1 with "=$B$1" So now, when I click it the "TRUE", "FALSE" text appears depending if check box is checked or not. The problem starts when I want to duplicate those two to more rows. Now every check box makes the B1 text to change, not the one it represents as in check box A1 should change B1 text, check box in cell A2 should change B2 text and so on, but now all check boxes change the same B1 text. Is there any workaround?
