• getting a date array from a mysql database?

  Hi guys, I have a database with date field is this format "2010.06.11. | 10:26 13" What is need is a php array that would hold all the different dates, .i.e. array[0] = "2010.06.09." array[1] = "2010.06.10." array[2] = "2010.06.11." Currently I am doing it by selecting the whole table, then looping through the result and adding the date substr to an array if it is not already there. But maybe there is a faster way? Thanks.

• Prevent query string manipulation by adding a hash?

  To protect a web application from query string manipulation, I was considering adding a query string parameter to every url which stores a SHA1 hash of all the other query string parameters & values, then validating against the hash on every request. Does this method provide strong protection against user manipulation of query string values? Are there any other downsides/side-effects to doing this? I am not particularly concerned about the 'ugly' urls for this private web application. Url's will still be 'bookmarkable' as the hash will always be the same for the same query string arguments. This is an ASP.NET application.

  Hi all, I've a flat file that I cleaned the data out using SSIS, the output looks like that : MEDICAL ADMIT PATIENT PATIENT DATE OF DX REC NO DATE NUMBER NAME DISCHARGE Code DRG # 123613 02/16/09 12413209 MORIBALDI ,GEMMA 02/19/09 428.20 988 130897 01/23/09 12407193 TINLEY ,PATRICIA 01/23/09 535.10 392 139367 02/27/09 36262509 THARPE ,GLORIA 03/05/09 562.10 392 141954 02/25/09 72779499 SHUMATE ,VALERIA 02/25/09 112.84 370 141954 03/07/09 36271732 SHUMATE ,VALERIA 03/10/09 493.92 203 145299 01/21/09 12406294 BAUGH ,MARIA 01/21/09 366.17 117 and the report (final results) attached in the screen shot from the final excel report. so what's happening is IF the same name or same account number is duplicate, that means the patient has entered the hospital again and needs to be included in the report. ![alt text][1] what I need to do is... Eliminate any rows that is NOT duplicate (not everybody in this file has been admitted again) and compare the dates to get the ReAdmitdate and ReDischargedate I dumped the data into a SQL table and trying to compare the dates to figure out "ReAdmitdate" and "ReDischargedate" any help is appreciated.   I was playing around a bit with functions with variable arguments, and decided to make a function to create vectors with the arguments. My function for creating an int vector worked... vector<int> makeIntVector(int numArgs, ...) { va_list listPointer; va_start(listPointer, numArgs); vector<int> made; for(int a = 0; a < numArgs; a++) made.push_back(va_arg(listPointer, int)); va_end(listPointer); return made; } but not my function for creating a string vector: vector<string> makeStringVector(int numArgs, string something, ...) { va_list listPointer; va_start(listPointer, something); vector<string> made; for(int a = 0; a < numArgs; a++) made.push_back(va_arg(listPointer, string)); va_end(listPointer); return made; } which crashes the program. What am I doing wrong?

• rails: date type and GetDate

  This is a follow up to this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2930256/unique-responses-rails-gem I'm going to create an index based on the user id, url and a date type. I want date type (not datetime type) because I want the day, the 24 hour day to be part of the index to avoid duplication of page views counts on the same day. In other words: A view only counts once in a day by a visitor. I also want the default value of that column (viewdate) to be the function GETDATE(). This is what I have in my migration: execute "ALTER TABLEpage_viewsADD COLUMN viewdate datetime DEFAULTGETDATE()`" But the value viewdate is always empty. What am I missing? (as an aside, any other suggestions for accomplishing this goal?)

  This might seem like a stupid easy question to some of you, but i'm new to jquery and can't get my datepicker to work like it should. This is my textbox where the datepicker is attached to: <asp:TextBox runat="server" ID="StartMonth" AutoPostBack="true" class="month-picker" /> and here is how i attach the datepicker. (I have multiple TextBoxes where the datepicker should be attached to, so i used the class attribute instead of the id.) $(".month-picker").datepicker({ dateFormat: 'MM yy', changeYear: true, yearRange: '-9:+9' }); What i want to archive is when i click into the textbox where the text is "August 2012" it should set the pre-selected date of the datepicker to this date. When the user enters a space into the string, the next input is automatically filled out with the remaining letters, or sometimes left blank. As the next input string is often an integer, this will result in an unpleasant bug. What's a good fix for this?

When I excute this in ruby, in result set the sent_date is stores as (Tue Apr 20 00:00:00 UTC 2010) messages = Message.find_by_sql(sql) puts messages[0]['sent_date'] puts statement prints "Tue Apr 20 00:00:00 UTC 2010" how to get same date format in mysql result and ruby result set. • Is it safe to use random Unicode for complex delimiter sequences in strings?

  Question: In terms of program stability and ensuring that the system will actually operate, how safe is it to use chars like ¦, § or ‡ for complex delimiter sequences in strings? Can I reliable believe that I won't run into any issues in a program reading these incorrectly? I am working in a system, using C# code, in which I have to store a fairly complex set of information within a single string. The readability of this string is only necessary on the computer side, end-users should only ever see the information after it has been parsed by the appropriate methods. Because some of the data in these strings will be collections of variable size, I use different delimiters to identify what parts of the string correspond to a certain tier of organization. There are enough cases that the standard sets of ;, |, and similar ilk have been exhausted. I considered two-char delimiters, like ;# or ;|, but I felt that it would be very inefficient. There probably isn't that large of a performance difference in storing with one char versus two chars, but when I have the option of picking the smaller option, it just feels wrong to pick the larger one. So finally, I considered using the set of characters like the double dagger and section. They only take up one char, and they are definitely not going to show up in the actual text that I'll be storing, so they won't be confused for anything. But character encoding is finicky. While the visibility to the end user is meaningless (since they, in fact, won't see it), I became recently concerned about how the programs in the system will read it. The string is stored in one database, while a separate program is responsible for both encoding and decoding the string into different object types for the rest of the application to work with. And if something is expected to be written one way, is possibly written another, then maybe the whole system will fail and I can't really let that happen. So is it safe to use these kind of chars for background delimiters?

  Before I wander off and roll my own I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to do the following sort of thing... Currently I am using MessageFormat to create some strings. I now have the requirement that some of those strings will have a variable number of arguments. For example (current code): MessageFormat.format("{0} OR {1}", array[0], array[1]); Now I need something like: // s will have "1 OR 2 OR 3" String s = format(new int[] { 1, 2, 3 }); and: // s will have "1 OR 2 OR 3 OR 4" String s = format(new int[] { 1, 2, 3, 4 }); There are a couple ways I can think of creating the format string, such as having 1 String per number of arguments (there is a finite number of them so this is practical, but seems bad), or build the string dynamically (there are a lot of them so this could be slow). Any other suggestions?

  I am looking for something like TRYCAST in TSQL or an equivalent method / hack. In my case I am extracting some date data from an xml column. The following query throws "Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime." if the piece of data found in the xml cannot be converted to datetime (in this specific case, the date is "0001-01-01" in some cases).   This is driving me crazy. I have the following string in a ASP.NET 2.0 WebForm Page string s = "0.009"; Simple enough. Now, if my culture is Spanish - which is "es-ES" - and I try to convert the string to Double, I do the following: double d = Double.Parse(s, new CultureInfo("es-ES")); what I'd expect is 0,009. Instead, I get 9. I understand that .NET thinks it is a thousand separator, which in en-US is a comma, but shouldn't it take the culture info I'm passing to the parse method and apply the correct format to the conversion? If I do double d = 0.009D; string formatted = d.ToString(new CultureInfo("es-ES")); formatted is now 0,009. Anybody?

• Flatten date range memberships retaining only the highest priority membership (TRANSACT-SQL)

  Problem statement: A table contains an item_id, a category_id and a date range (begin_date and end_date). No item may be in more than one category on any given date (in general; during daily rebuilding it can be in an invalid state temporarily). By default, all items are added (and re-added if removed) to a category (derived from outside data) automatically on a daily basis, and their membership in that category matches the lifespan of the item (items have their own begin and end date, and usually spend their entire lives in the same category, which is why this matches). For items in category X, it is occasionally desirable to override the default category by adding them to category Y. Membership in category Y could entirely replace membership in category X (that is, the begin and end dates for membership in category Y would match the begin and end dates of the item itself), or it could override it for an arbitrary period of time (at the beginning, middle or end the item's lifespan, possibly overriding for short periods at multiple times). Membership in category Y is not renewed automatically and additions to that category is done by manual data entry. Every day, when category X is rebuilt, we get an overlap, where any item in category Y will now be in category X as well (which is forbidden, as noted previously). Goal: After each repopulation of category X (which is done in a rather complicated and fragile manner, and ideally would be left alone), I'm trying to find an efficient means of writing a stored procedure that: Identifies the overlaps Changes existing entries, adds new ones where necessary (such as in the case where an item starts in category X, switches to category Y, then eventually switches back to category X before ending), or removes entries (when an item is in category Y for its entire life) such that every item remains in category Y (and only Y) where specified, while category X membership is maintained when not overridden by category Y. Does not affect memberships of categories A, B, C, Z, etc., which do not have override categories and are built separately, by completely different rules. Note: It can be assumed that X membership covers the entire lifespan of the item before this procedure is called, so it is unnecessary to query any data outside this table. Bonus credit: If for some reason there are two adjacent or overlapping memberships in for the same item in category Y, stitching them together into a single entry is appreciated, but not necessary. • PHP date function not accepting timezone change

  Hello, I've set up a quick little test to understand and debug timezones between mySQL and PHP. Here's the page: http://dev.feedingo.com/test_dates.php The dates are being created in mySQL using NOW() in a datetime field. The initial problem I was trying to figure out is what timezone mySQL is using and how to sync it up with PHP. But now there's an even weirder issue. In my test app, if you change your timezone, the first strtotime updates properly, but if you pass it into a date() function it doesn't change. This is how im setting the timezone based off the select box. $current_timezone = 'America/New_York'; if( isset( $_GET['timezone'] ) ) $current_timezone = $_GET['timezone']; date_default_timezone_set($current_timezone); Any ideas as to why the date() function isn't accepting the timezone changes?   I read this question on the site How is the java memory pool divided? and i was wondering to which of these sectors does the "String Constant Pool" belongs? And also does the String literals in the pool ever get GCed? The intern() method returns the base link of the String literal from the pool. If the pool does gets GCed then wouldn't it be counter-productive to the idea of the string pool? New String literals would again be created nullifying the GC. (It is assuming that only a specific set of literals exist in the pool, they never go obsolete and sooner or later they will be needed again)
