• Trouble cloning a Macbook Pro hard drive

  I am trying to upgrade the 250GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro (early 2008 model) to a 750GB drive. I have connected the new drive via an external USB enclosure. The drive is recognized fine, I can format it, etc. However, every time I try to clone the drive, I am getting Input/Output errors. Before the clone operation, I have verified both the internal and the external drive using Disk Utility, and they both check out fine. After the clone operation, the external drive shows multiple "Invalid node structure" errors: I have tried two approaches for cloning the drive: Using Disk Utility, by starting from the OSX install DVD Using Carbon Copy Cloner The outcome is the same in both cases. The Carbon Copy Cloner logs show a handful of the following types of errors: rsync: mkstemp "<... an external filename ...>" failed: Input/output error (5) rsync: stat "<... an external filename ...>" failed: Input/output error (5) The actual files affected seem to be different across different runs of the application. Before the last run, I used Disk Utility to (once more) reformat the external drive and explicitly overwrite it with zeros, but this made no difference. I also tried running a surface scan in Tech Tool Pro overnight. It got about 2/3 of the way through before I had to disconnect the drive (had to take my MacBook Pro to work), but so far it didn't report any bad blocks. Assuming it scans the drive in the same order in which blocks would be allocated during actual use, it seems like if bad blocks were to blame for the clone failures, they should have been found already (given that the source drive is only 250GB). As a last attempt, I may try SuperDuper as well, although my understanding is that it uses the same underlying rsync approach as Carbon Copy Cloner, so it's unlikely to perform any better. Are there any other things I should try before I send the drive in for a replacement? Could these problems be caused by my internal drive, even though it works fine and checks out fine in Disk Utility?

• Multicast hostname lookups on OSX

  I have a problem with hostname lookups on my OSX computer. According to Apple's HK3473 document it says for v10.6: Host names that contain only one label in addition to local, for example "My-Computer.local", are resolved using Multicast DNS (Bonjour) by default. Host names that contain two or more labels in addition to local, for example "server.domain.local", are resolved using a DNS server by default. Which is not true as my testing. If I try to open a connection on my local computer to a remote port: telnet example.domain.local 22 then it will lookup the IP address with multicast DNS next to the A and AAAA lookups. This causes a two seconds lookup timeout on every lookup. Which is a lot! When I try with IPv4 only then it won't use the multicast queries to fetch the remote address just the simple A queries. telnet -4 example.domain.local 22 When I try with IPv6 only: telnet -6 example.domain.local 22 then it will lookup with multicast DNS and AAAA again, and the 2 seconds timeout delay occurs again. I've tried to create a resolver entry to my /etc/resolver/domain.local, and /etc/resolver/local.1, but none of them was working. Is there any way to disable this multicast lookups for the "two or more label addition to local" domains, or simply disable it for the selected subdomain (domain.local)? Thank you!

  Hi All, I'm a sys admin and I am trying to learn how to use powershell... I have never done any type of scripting or coding before and I have been teaching myself online by learning from the technet script centre and online forums. What I am trying to accomplish is to open an excel spreadsheet get information from it (usernames and password) and then output it into the command prompt in powershell. • Tracking down the cause of a web service fault running in IIS

  I have built a web service in Visual Studio 2008, and deployed it on IIS 7 running on Windows Server 2008 R2. It has been extensively tested, handles all errors gracefully and logs any uncaught errors to a file using log4net. The system normally runs perfectly, but occasionally (2 or 3 times a day) a fault occurs and screws up the application which needs an iisreset to get it working again. When the fault occurs I get some random errors that are caught by my catch-all error log, such as: Value cannot be null. Could not convert from type 'System.Boolean' to type 'System.DateTime'. Sequence contains no elements These errors are raised on every request until I manually do an iisreset, but there is no sight of them when the system is running normally. The web service is a stateless request-response application. Nothing is stored in the session. It could be load related, but I doubt it as there are only around 30 or 40 requests per minute. This is proving very tricky to track down. I can't work out what is putting IIS into this bad state, and why it needs an iisreset to get it working again. Nothing is reported in the event log. Can anyone suggest how to enable more extensive logging that might catch this fault? Also, does anyone know what might be causing the problem?

• Permission denied problem in Freenas + Transmission

  Running Freenas 0.7.2 (5543) and Transmission 2.11 The problem it that i can not save a torrent where ever i want.. For example... I can save in: /nmt/1-500gb/Tv/dexter but i can not save in /nmt/4-1000gb/tv/Lost When i try to save in the lost folder I get a permission denied error in the Web interface. But when I try to save the same torrent file in the dexter folder everything works fine... This is probably an easy thing to fix, but I'm new to Freenas. The user name for Transmission is TorrentUser if that helps. Now I find out that I can not browse the disk in Quixplorer.. I can browse nmt/4-1000gb/ but not /nmt/1-500gb When I try to browse the nmt/4-1000gb/ I get Unable to read directory $ mount /dev/md0 on / (ufs, local) devfs on /dev (devfs, local) procfs on /proc (procfs, local) /dev/fuse1 on /mnt/5 - 500gb (fusefs, local, synchronous) /dev/fuse2 on /mnt/2 - 1000gb (fusefs, local, synchronous) /dev/fuse3 on /mnt/3 - 1000gb (fusefs, local, synchronous) /dev/fuse4 on /mnt/4 - 1000gb (fusefs, local, synchronous) /dev/fuse5 on /mnt/320GB - USB (fusefs, local, synchronous) /dev/md1 on /var (ufs, local) /dev/da0a on /cf (ufs, local, read-only) /dev/fuse0 on /mnt/1 - 500gb (fusefs, local, synchronous) Dont work : 1 - 500gb 2 - 1000gb 3 - 1000gb Works: 320GB - USB 4 - 1000gb 5 - 500gb And this 3 disk is the same disks that I can save my torrents to. • Configured Samba to join our domain, but logon fails from Windows machine

  I've configured a Fedora 11 installation to join our domain. It seems to join successfully (though it reports a DNS update failure) but when I try to access \\fedoraserver.test.mycompany.com I'm prompted for a password. So I enter adminuser and the password and that fails, so I try test.mycompany.com\adminuser and that too fails. What am I missing? EDIT (Update 9/1/09): I can now connect to the machine and see the shares on it (see my response to djhowell's answer) but when I try to connect, I get an error saying The network path was not found. • Network Load Balancing, intermittent port problem on Windows Server 2008

  Trying to troubleshoot an intermittent problem on a Windows Server 2008 NLB. I think it might be related to an NLB issue. We are using Windows Network Load Balancing to balance load for our multiserver SharePoint front ends. Say... Web Front End 1 IP is 192.168.1.100 and Web Front End 2 IP is 192.168.1.101, the NLB is setup to load balance both WFE servers on any incoming traffic to the IP 192.168.1.200. Sometimes we got an intermittent issue where when we try to access the SharePoint site using 192.168.1.200:8080 (say the site is set up to run on port 8080) from a remote client, it will display page not found. Pinging the 192.168.1.200 will give responses, but when trying to telnet to 192.168.1.200:8080 it just won't connect. However, browsing the SharePoint site directly on individual WFE (192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101) show no problem whatsoever. My guess also (we didn't get a chance to try it yet, but I think it should work), if I try connecting remotely to individual server, it will respond just fine. But any attempt on trying to connect using the virtual IP (192.168.1.200) will fail miserably. Funny thing is, after a while it will return back to normal. Anyone had similar experience with this type of problem while implementing NLB before? We are doing this in a virtual environment.

• Arch Linux drops me on my school network

  I'm running a Lenovo X61 which i carry around my college for getting on the internet at various points in the day. The network has always been finicky but recently it's gotten worse. I'll connect using iwconfig, get an ip from dhcpcd and log in using vpnc to their system. Sometimes I'll stay connected for hours but most of the time within 30 seconds my network traffic will drop to zero and i'll be unable to do anything. My computer still belives it's connected, however to try again i need to put my wireless interface down, put it back up and try again. It's gotten so bad that i've got a window on my computer pinging yahoo or google constantly in order to know if i'm still able to get online. I know other people who have used Arch Linux that don't have the same problems as well as people who use Ubuntu who haven't had any problems either. It seems like my computer is a special case. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? dmesg doesn't show anything out of the ordinary going on and i don't know where else to look for errors or other things to try. Edit: this doesn't happen on my home network. It's a problem that only happens at school.

  On my Windows 8 desktop I keep getting error 0x80073cf9 when I try to install or update an app from the windows store. In the installings apps pane it just says "This app wasn't installed -- view details" and when I select that it says "Something happened and this app couldn't be installed. Please try again. • Issues regarding internet connectivity

  Hello. My problem started when Yahoo Messenger stopped connecting. I've tried to see if Internet Explorer was working but will not load any page. The diagnostics of Internet Explorer says that is something wrong with my dns(using just ip of google or yahoo or my local webserver was not working). I use Windows 7 and at the moment i've had Internet Explorer 8 and after a lot of failing updates to ie9 I've successfully install the Romanian version of IE9(now i have ie8 after a system restore). Then I installed the service pack 1. I've done a lot of things and I will try to enumerate them, but my problem persists. Settings from Yahoo Messenger and Internet Explorer are OK. I've try to reset winsock and ip from netsh. I've scanned my pc with spybot, mallwarebytes, Trojan Remover(simplysup), Loaris Trojan Remover, Avast, Nod32, Kaspersky, Bitdefender,alot of registry cleaner including CCleaner and maybe others that I cannot remember now. I reset the registry permissions using subinacl. At a moment my files permissions was set jut to "trusted installer" and I've put the permission back to files and folders using the model of other windows 7 machine. I have try so many things that now i'm stuck in a loop using different security tools to check for problems. Oh, and my virtual machines are working just fine.(I'm using VirtualBox) Please Help. PS, Reinstalling Windows is not an option. Thank you!

• Cannot remove storage account because of lease, but I already deleted the server [closed]

  I recently created a temporary virtual server on Azure. Then I deleted it. I wanted to delete the storage account associated with it because I didn't need it any more. The problem is that the VHD file is still associated to a non-existing virtual machine!! If I try to delete the VHD from Virtual Machines\Disks I get the Delete button greyed and the table tells me it's still associated with the old VM. If I go to storage administration and try to delete the blob from vhds/ directory I get there is an active lease. I've read on Azure forums that, in these case, one should try to force releasing the lease from the blob. I followed their instructions and downloaded their script, but running it failed. The script detected that the disk is associated to a Virtual Machine and can't be deleted. The problem is that I'm 1000000% sure that I already deleted the VM. In fact, I currently only have a single VM that has its own HD and is up and running fine! What can I do to delete that storage account that is probably sucking money from my pocket?

• Dovecot authentification not working

  I run a Ubuntu 10.04 VPS with Postfix and Dovecot installed. For a while I had problems with the mailserver itself (Postfix) but now it runs ok. I can telnet into it from localhost (telnet localhost 25 while logged in) and Im blocked if I try to do it from the outside (telnet mail.example.org 25). • Blank list of windows services

  Recently when I open windows services (always as administrator) I get a blank list of services: When I try and click on one of the empty lines I get this "Script Error" message: This happens over and over again, after several times I restarted my computer. I can't pinpoint exactly when this started happening or if I made any specific changes to my computer at that time. Someone told my to try running scf /scannow as administrator, but when I try to do that the scan stops at 34% and I get the message: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit, and I would really like to avoid reinstalling windows. Does anyone know how to fix this? Edit - Here is another attempt I made and some more information that might help: Following WhoIsRich's suggestion, I tried the command sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows. This gave the error message "The arguments passed to sfc are invalid. The offline windows directory specified points to the online system", and then I realized this command is meant to be run after booting from another system. Since I don't have my windows installation disk right now, I used my own system to create a recovery disk, and then restarted my computer and used the recovery disk to boot. I then ran the above command, and I got the following message: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log". I then restarted my computer and let it boot up normally. The problem with windows services persists, and the CBS.log file is a long log file with many entries, and I don't know if there is useful information in it, and if there is, how to find it.

• How to change the spell checking language in Chromium?

  When write I need spell checking in Danish or English (one at a time, not both at the same time), but changing from one language to the other is not working well for me. Example: Writing an email in English, everything is underlined as misspelled because the spelling language is set to Danish. I then right-click the text field and choose "Spell-checker Options" and set the language to English. But is does not change the language. Only after I try maybe 4-5 times it does. Selecting the text, clicking it, clicking the background, click the text, I have tried it all but I cannot figure out how it works. Sometimes it changes on first try, sometimes I have to do it 6-7 times. Searching brings lots of a known bugs stating that Chromium does not re-check the text after changing the language. But that is not what drives me crazy, for starters being able to change the language in the first try would be nice. It is not a fault in my installation, I have the same problem on 3 computers. Does any know something that I don't?

• Word 2010 does not save as Word 2003 XML

  I have a document which was created in Word 2010, but for use in a particular application, it needs to be saved in Word 2003 XML format. When I try the normal "Save as" via the File menu (choosing Word 2003 XML format to save as), Word 2010 thinks for a while, and then presents the "Save as" dialog to me again, suggesting that I save the document as .docx. Trying to get around this, I saved the document as .doc (i.e. Word 97-2003 document). This worked fine. But when I try to save this .doc file as Word 2003 XML, again Word 2010 thinks for a while, and then presents the "Save as" dialog, suggesting this time that I save the document as .doc. Oh, and I need to say that this only happens on a specific document - all others work fine. I know I should try a process of elimination and see what is causing the symptoms, but it would nice to have an answer "in principle". Is there perhaps a setting somewhere that I have enable? Does anyone know what's going on here?

• LDAP Account Locked Out Sporadically after Password change - Finding the source of invalid attempts

  On a small network of machines (<1000) we have a user whose account is being locked out after an indeterminate interval following a password change. We are having severe difficulties finding the source of the invalid logon attempts and I would appreciate it greatly if some of you could go through your thought process and the checks you would perform in order to fix the problem. All I know for sure is that the account is locked out several (5+) times a day, I can't even be sure it's due to failed login attempts as there is no record of failure until the account is locked. So far I have tried; Logging the account out of everything we can think of and back in with the new password Scanning the user's box for any non standard software which might perform an LDAP lookup Checking all installed services on our production boxes to check none are attempting to run under the account Changing the user back to their old password (Problem persists so perhaps password change is a red herring) Wireshark on a box where lots of LDAP authentication is performed - Rejects only occur after account is already locked out Clearing the credential cache in - Control Panel - User Accounts - Advanced Looking at the local I'm at a loss for what to try. I am happy to try any suggestions you have in order to diagnose the issue. I think my question boils down to a simple request; I need a technique for deriving the source (Application/Host) of the invalid login attempts which are causing the account to be locked. • Internet connection problem,ping ok , but outlook and browsers dont work

  Hi, From some days ago I have a big problem on my laptop( run windows xp sp3) When I connect to internet I can ping web sites but when try to browse them some times it work correctly and some times the connection to server intrupted and I have to refresh the page several times. in this case browser show a connection problem immediatly after I click on address bar or a link on page( wihtout any try to connect to server) I use FireFox and opera and both of them have this problem. try another ISP and still I have this problem. I didnt use any proxy server and check the proxy setting. In this case Outlook also can't connect to mail server. this problem anfter some time or after restart windows have been fixed for a while. I check for virus and can't find anything. Is there any idea how can I fix it? UPDATE: Thanks for your responses. I test them , also I use Open DNS setting and that dosent help me. last night I see that my local web application ( such as Adsl modem config web site , and sites that I set up on windows xo IIS ) aslo can't open and Internal Communication error apears ( Opera Message) that didnt relate to DNS settings or Internet connection.

  We have SQL Server 2008 installed on 64Bit Windows Server 2003. When we try connect to the local SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio at the console, we get the error: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe. When we try TCP from same local SSMS to local server, we get the same error but intead of the pipe message its something like "connection forcibly closed". Now, here is the strange part - we CAN connect to this SQL Server from any other machine on the network using SSMS. - AND - WE CAN'T connect to ANY SQL Server from the problem server. So it seems the SQL Server instance is fine and accepting remote connections. However, the SSMS on that machine will not connect to any SQL Server even remotely. When we try an ADO.NET connection from C# remotely we can connect, run that same code on the console of the trouble server and we get the same errors. How can this be solved?

  I've got multiple named vhosts on an Apache web server (CentOS 5, Apache 2.2.3). Each vhost has their own config file in /etc/httpd/vhosts.d and these vhost config files are included from the main httpd conf with... Include vhosts.d/*.conf Here's an example of one of the vhost confs... Anyone accessing the server directly by IP address, I'd like them to just get an 403 or a 404. I've discovered several ways to set a default/catch-all vhost and some conflicting opinions. I could create a new vhost conf in vhosts.d called 000aaadefault.conf or something but that feels a bit nasty. I could have a <VirtualHost> block in my main httpd.conf before the vhosts.d directory is included. I could just specify a DocumentRoot in my main httpd.conf What about specifying a default vhost in httpd.conf with _default_ http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/examples.html#default Would having a <VirtualHost _default_:*> block in my httpd.conf before I Include vhosts.d/*.conf be the best way for a catch-all?

  I'm very new to Nagios. I'm trying to send email alerts. But that doesn't seem to be working. But in my log of nagios I can see this : SERVICE ALERT: Appserver;Tmp directory;CRITICAL;HARD;1; Where host notifications are generated via email, only service alerts are not working. And when I look at sendEmail log I can see this : Sep 14 12:38:39 x.x.x.x. sendEmail[23005]: ERROR => You must specify a 'from' field! Try --help. • Gigabit LAN not working on ASUS M2N-MX

  Today I replace my FastEthernet switch with a newly bought gigabit switch (DGS-1008A). All computers in my house are displaying that the connection speed is 1 Gbps except for one. The computer that is not working is an ASUS M2N-MX which contain an onboard gigabit NIC. See ASUS link for confirmation http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NMX/ Here are some info of the machine OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64bit BIOS version: 1004 (latest) Driver: installed via Windows update (latest from Windows update) Windows Update: fully updated The machine is reformatted 3 days ago, so it's pretty clean, no junk, no virus, etc Cable: Amp CAT5E 5 meters In device manager, the name of the NIC is "NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet" What I have try: I did try to install the driver provided in ASUS website, but there isn't any for Windows 7 64 or Vista 64. I did try to install the latest nForce340/6100, downloaded from Nvidia website. However, the LAN driver refuse to install, it complain that I already have the best driver installed. I looking in the property -- advance tab -- Speed/duplex settings, in an attempt to force it to run at 1000Mbps, but there is no 1000Mbps choice, only 10 and 100Mpbs. I change the CAT5E cable (use one from another computer that is running gigabit without problem) Anyone have this issue or know how to solve it? Thanks

  Pre-note: This is not a problem I am having with Minecraft. All answers I can find seem to be Minecraft issues. Error: could not create the Java Virtual Machine. Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit. I get this error when I try to do something Java related. I cannot launch a .jar without this error coming up and when I try to install JDK, I get this error. This has been plauging me for a while and I was not able to research an answer so I thought I would ask it myself. EDIT: Windows 7 (x64) Dell Studio Laptop, 4GB RAM, external Radeon HD 6950 Graphics Card. I have tried uninstalling all JVMs and reinstalling but it didn't work, although I cannot remember how thorough I was so I may try again.
