• Sudo apt-get update -f does not work?

  I am a bit of a noob with Linux. Several months ago I updated to Ubuntu 12.04, then stopped using Ubuntu for a while for a variety of reasons. Now I would like to go back to it, but I have a couple of problems. For one thing, the Software Center will simply not load. I click on the icon, the program comes up, but it never loads, and when I close it I get a "window not responding" message. While reading some threads to fix this issue, the common theme was that the main solution was to update by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center However, when I run that, I get the following (long): bcoleary@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center [sudo] password for bcoleary: Reading package lists... • How can I get TFS2010 to run MSDEPLOY for me through MSBUILD?

  There is an excellent PDC talk available here which describes the new MSDEPLOY features in Visual Studio 2010 - as well as how to deploy an application within TFS. You can use MSBUILD within TFS2010 to call through to MSDEPLOY to deploy your package to IIS. This is done by means of parameters to MSBUILD. The talk explains some of the command line parameters such as : /p:DeployOnBuild /p:DeployTarget=MsDeployPublish /p:CreatePackageOnPublish=True /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=InProc /p:MSDeployServiceURL=localhost /p:DeployIISAppPath="Default Web Site" But where is the documentation for this - I can't find any? I've been spending all day trying to get this to work and can't quite get it right and keep ending up with various errors. If I run the package's cmd file it deploys perfectly. But I want to get the whole deployment running through msbuild using these arguments and not a separate call to msdeploy or running the package .cmd file. How can I do this? PS. Yes I do have the Web Deployment Agent Service running. I also have the management service running under IIS. I've tried using both. • MySQL Daemon failed to start.

  There were no updates when I ran yum update. I was trying to install php-soap (which was failing), and online I found I should run this: wget -q -O - http://www.atomicorp.com/installers/atomic.sh |sh After running that, then "yum install php-soap" ran successfuly. Then I ran yum update just to check for updates and said yes for some packages. I noticed there were some mysql ones and such. Now mysql isn't running anymore and it won't let me start it (I get "MySQL Daemon failed to start") Ideas?

  Completed CentOS 5.4 perfect install from howtoforge.com (ISPConfig 3). I have ISPConfig 3 deployed with a handful of sites. I installed xen: yum install xen kernel-xen i installed the recommended (linuxtopia.org) virtualization packages and started libvirtd yum install virt-manager libvirt libvirt-python libvirt-python python-virtinst i have damn small linux .iso in /root virt-install --name damnsmall --ram 16 --file=/var/lib/xen/images/damnsmall.img --file-size=1 --vnc --cdrom=/root/current.iso yields the error: ERROR Host does not support any virtualization options i have also tried this from GNOME (virt-manager) and i cant even add a connection. i read somewhere i need to reboot with the xen kernel--i dont think i want to do that--though, not really sure why. i need to keep ISPConfig untouched.   I am trying to use VS2010's 1-Click Publish feature to deploy a test site from my laptop to my server. I have the firewall turned off on both machines and the MS Deployment Service is up and running on both my laptop and the server. However when I try and publish from VS2010 on my laptop I get the following error Error 1 Web deployment task failed.(Remote agent (URL https://192.168.1.181/:8172/msdeploy.axd?site=LocationsTest) could not be contacted. Make sure the remote agent service is installed and started on the target computer.) The requested resource does not exist, or the requested URL is incorrect. • Windows server reboot loop - uninstalling hotfixes

  After installing 3 updates, my system is stuck in a reboot loop. I am using server 2008 r2. I have tried deleting pending.xml from the windows directory, so pelase don't suggest that. I tried dism /image:d:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions which completed successfully but did not solve my issue I then tried: dism /image:d:\ /Remove-Package /PackageName: and sucusfully removed one of the 3 updates. The two updates that are left are not listed with the dism get-packages command, but are listed with the get-apppatches command. I cannot find a way to uninstall them with dism however. So my question is, how can I manually uninstall specific updates or hotfixes from within the winre environment?

• How to upgrade ClamAV on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS?

  I'm running a server on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, and when I installed ClamAV via aptitude, it installed version 0.94. That version has now been EOL'ed, but when I run "aptitude upgrade", it doesn't update ClamAV to the more recent version (0.96). I then followed these instructions on Installing ClamAV from the PPA, but when I did that, I get a message saying "The following packages have been kept back: ... clamav clamav-base clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam ..." Does anyone know how to get Ubuntu 8.04 to do this update via aptitude or apt-get (I'm hoping to avoid having to compile from source, etc.)?

  The HP PowerProtector user guide states that to install the HP PowerProtector client on an ESXi Host: Download the latest version of HPPP from the HP website (http://www.hp.com/go/rackandpower). The ESXi Server is automatically detected, and a shutdown command script is generated. None of these are labelled for ESXi. Does anyone know where or how to get the HP Power Protector ESXi client installed?

• OpenVPN slow with Firewall enabled on Zyxel ZyWall USG-100

  I have an OpenVPN server on a Linux machine, after installing a ZyWall USG-100 I'm experiencing extremely slowness navigating web servers on my remote LAN through the VPN connection, while accessing the web interface of the ZyWall is fast. I have configured everything : the Virtual Server for the OpenVPN Server, the static route as with the replaced router that I had before installing the ZyWall Today. I even added a rule to the firewall that allows connection to the OpenVPN Server machine : but navigation on the LAN through the VPN still slow, it seems that the Firewall is blocking packages, since if I disable the firewall on the USG-100 everything works fast as usual, while with the firewall enabled it is extremely slow. Why ? Do I need to add some other rule to the firewall to speed up ?

• Problem with kde-filesystem when updating.

  Since 2-3 weeks, each time I update my fedora 11 box with yum, I get these messages. Error unpacking rpm package kde-filesystem-4-33.fc11.noarch warning: /etc/rpm/macros.kde4 saved as /etc/rpm/macros.kde4.rpmsave error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/share/doc/HTML/fr/docs/common: cpio: rename Failed: kde-filesystem.noarch 0:4-33.fc11 Everything else works fine. I tried to reinstall it. The re-installation was fine but I still get the messages when I yum update I didn't try to remove it with yum because it will remove more than 100 packages dues to dependencies. What else could I do ?

  In ubuntu 9.04, I tried to upgrade from firefox 3.0 to 3.5, by installing some apt-get packages, and there is a problem! Now firefox calls itself "Namoroka" and the firefox logo is gone and replaced by a black square in the upper bar and it says it is a development beta version. I really don't like this version, how can I go back to the stable version of firefox? I tried apt-get remove firefox-3.5 and apt-get install firefox-3.0 and that did not work. How do I go back to the stable version of firefox?

• Tab bar controller inside a navigation controller, or sharing a navigation root view

  I'm trying to implement a UI structured like in the Tweetie app, which behaves as so: the top-level view controller seems to be a navigation controller, whose root view is an "Accounts" table view. If you click on any account, it goes to the second level, which has a tab bar across the bottom. Each tab item shows a different list and lets you drill down further (the subsequent levels don't show the tab bar). So, this seems like the implementation hierarchy is: UINavigationController Accounts: UITableViewController UITabBarController Tweets: UITableViewController Detail view of a tweet/user/etc Replies: UITableViewController ... This seems to work[^1], but appears to be unsupported according to the SDK documentation for -pushViewController:animated: (emphasis added): viewController: The view controller that is pushed onto the stack. It cannot be an instance of tab bar controller. I would like to avoid private APIs and the like, but I'm not sure why this usage is explicitly prohibited even when it seems to work fine. Anyone know the reason? I've thought about putting the tab bar controller as the main controller, with each of the tabs containing separate navigation controllers. The problem with this is that each nav controller needs to share a single root view controller (namely the "Accounts" table in Tweetie) -- this doesn't seem to work: pushing the table controller to a second nav controller seems to remove it from the first. Not to mention all the book-keeping when selecting a different account would probably be a pain. How should I implement this the Right Way? [^1]: The tab bar controller needs to be subclassed so that the tab bar controller's navigation item at that level stays in sync with the selected tab's navigation item, and the individual tab's table controller's need to push their respective detail views to self.tabBarController.navigationController instead of self.navigationController.

  I have a lot of open source software to be installed for a course. We currently run on PCs that we provide. If we allow students to use their own Macs in Mac-centric schools, that means we have to load the software on those Macs. Rathern than have to load individual software, is there any way I can create a single file, mount it and run a script to install all packages? We are willing to simplify the installs by standardizing the locations to store the applications, since the students will have identical machines.

  I have a Python 3 web app so mod_wsgi < 3.1 doesn't cut it for me. However, on my Ubuntu 9.10 installation there doesn't seem to be a package for mod_wsgi 3.1. Is there an alternative repository that has a package for mod_wsgi 3.1? There's a new Ubuntu release not so long from now, will it contain mod_wsgi 3.1? Some other distro ready with mod_wsgi 3.1 to recommend? Maybe my best bet is to compile it myself? From a quick google it looks like I only need the python and apache dev packages installed. Thanks!

  I'm installing gitolite from CentOS packages for my client. The package creates a gitolite user, which will be visible explicitly during a "git clone" operations. The client wants to use "git" and not "gitolite", in case we change to something more fancy later. I'm not very familiar with CentOS, so I don't want to try to build the package myself from source. I'm wondering if there's a way to do one of the following: Trick sshd into treating "git" as "gitolite". Somehow "alias" a new git username to be the same in all ways as the existing gitolite username (perhaps through some complex combinations of useradd). Rename the "gitolite" username to "git" without upsetting later yum update operations Something else that I hadn't thought of I'd appreciate detailed instructions or pointers.

• Difference between RPM (yum) and apt-get

  Functional difference between the two? Packages different style or what? I'm dipping my toe in the server pool and playing with an Ubuntu install right now, which is apt-get. I'm also considering FreeBSD and Debian if I do decide to start running my own VPS. So far things have been very easy, sudo apt-get install apache2 and the like with no issues at all. I'd like to know if there is a different learning curve to yum or variants.

  Coming from an ubuntu perspective, if I want to check to see what additional packages will be installed/upgraded I can use apt-get --simulate install <package name> Is there something similar for yum? Our Red hat box (yum) is our production server, so I would like to see exactly what will be happening before I actually install some package.
