  • How do I find out when and by whom a particular user was deleted in linux?

    I've recently ran into a very odd occurrence on one system I'm using. For no apparent reason, my user account was deleted, although the home directory is still there. I have root access, so I can restore the account, but first, I want to know how this happened, and exactly when. Inspecting the root's .bash_history file and the "last" command gave nothing, and I'm (well, was) the only sudoer on the system. How would I know when this deletion happened? The distro is CentOS release 5.4 (Final), if that helps.

    There are a lot of threads discussing existence of WPF/Silverlight/HTML5 on Windows 8, I just need to clarify the picture about desktop applications only, I have following queries to the experts What are the technologies available for developing desktop applications on Windows 8? What are the technologies I can use for creating rich multimedia applications. Currently I have an application with DirectX 9 and WPF. If I am to develop something like that for Windows 8 then what options are available to me, and what are the pros and cons of these. Is it a good idea to continue with the same DirectX 9 code on Windows 8 as well? What is the best option equivalent to DirectX, Is it XNA or is it DirectX 11 or something else? Performance an extensibility are critical points to me. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks in Advance.

  • Can I change the user that is the default choice in UAC?

    Windows 7 install. I RANU, so I have to hit the UAC every once in awhile. The problem is that it asks me to enter my password to elevate, but I need to enter the domain\username of the box admin (I'm on a domain) and the password. Instead of UAC popping up with my username entered and the caret in the password box, I'd like it to pop up with the domain\username of a different user, specifically the local admin account, entered. This would save me a click and some typing. Sue me, I'm lazy. Is this possible?

    Hi, I would like to use autocompletebox with a list of values, but also add new values to the list if a user enters one that isn't present. I currently have a string property in my view model called 'Comment'. Currently this is bound to a textbox in the view - user types a comment and the view model is updated. Simple. To save time, my customer would like it to autocomplete from previous values, so the way I thought to do this is something like: ViewModel public string Comment; public ObservableCollection<string> CommentsList { ... } (populate the CommentsList when the viewmodel is created) View <AutoCompleteComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding CommentsList}" SelectedItem="{Binding Comment, Mode=TwoWay/> So when the user selects a value, it saves the value in the Comment property. This works fine if the user selects an item in the list, but if the user types in a new value, the comment property is not updated (it is null because the selected item was not in the list).   • Windows 7 Login User Doesn't Exist [closed]

    I have another interesting issue... because of some issue with a lost password, I had to manually change the password to one of the accounts via and DOS hack. However, somehow in the process I now have a phantom username that I am asked to logon to when Windows first starts... This username doesn't exit. In order to login, I have to "change user" and manually type in the correct username. Is there a way that I can edit which username it prompts me for? I'd like to repair this without having to reinstall just yet.

    Sorry if this has been asked before, couldn't find anything specific. I'm looking for the most user-friendly issue tracker. Currently I'm using Trac. I'm looking for these 2 features: Very easy to create new ticket Email to ticket conversion (with attachements). The customers should be glad to use it (not avoid it like Trac). More often than not I get e-mails as bug reports and putting them into Trac wastes my time. I would really love to just hit forward and the ticket would appear in the issue tracker.

    In my project I have a database class that I use to handle all the MySQL stuff. It connects to a database, runs queries, catches errors and closes the connection. Now I need to create a members area on my site, and I was going to build a users class that would handle registration, logging in, password/username changes/resets and logging out. In this users class I need to use MySQL for obvious reasons... which is what my database class was made for. But I'm confused as to how I would use my database class in my users class. Would I want to create a new database object for my user class and then have it close whenever a method in that class is finished? Or do I somehow make a 'global' database class that can be used throughout my entire script (if this is the case I need help with that, no idea what to do there.) Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

  • c# Unit Test: Writing to Settings in unit test does not save values in user.config

    I am running a c# unit test (VS 2008). Within the test I do write to the settings, which should result in saving the data to the user.config. Settings.Default.X = "History"; // X is string Settings.Default.Save(); But this simply does not create the file (I have crosschecked under "C:\Documents and Settings\HW\Local Settings\Application Data"). If I create the same stuff as a Console application, there is no problem persisting the data (same code). Is there something special I need to consider doing this in a UnitTest?

  • What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

    If we've learned anything from HTML/CSS it's that, declarative languages (like XML) work best to describe User Interfaces because: It's easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it's easy to parse. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers. I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML. It's apparent to me that the current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn't be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc). There are 45 GUI platforms for Python alone It's seems reasonable to me that there should be a general purpose, open source, standardized, platform independent, markup language for designing desktop GUIs. Much like what the W3C made HTML/CSS into. WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction. Now that the 'browser wars' are over should we look forward to a future of 'desktop gui wars?' Note: This topic is relatively subjective in the attempt to be 'future-thinking.' I think that desktop GUI development in its current state sucks ((really)hard) and, even though WPF is still in it's infancy, it presents a likely solution to the problem. Update: Thanks a lot for the info, keep it comin'. Here's are the options I've gathered from the comments and answers. GladeXML Editor: Glade Interface Designer OS Platforms: All GUI Platform: GTK+ Languages: C (libglade), C++, C# (Glade#), Python, Ada, Pike, Perl, PHP, Eiffel, Ruby XRC (XML Resource) Editors: wxGlade, XRCed, wxDesigner, DialogBlocks (non-free) OS Platforms: All GUI Platform: wxWidgets Languages: C++, Python (wxPython), Perl (wxPerl), .NET (wx.NET) XML based formats that are either not free, not cross-platform, or language specific XUL Editor: Any basic text editor OS Platforms: Any OS running a browser that supports XUL GUI Platform: Gecko Engine? Languages: C++, Python, Ruby as plugin languages not base languages Note: I'm not sure if XUL deserves mentioning in this list because it's less of a desktop GUI language and more of a make-webapps-run-on-the-desktop language. Plus, it requires a browser to run. IE, it's 'DHTML for the desktop.' CookSwing Editor: Eclipse via WindowBuilder, NetBeans 5.0 (non-free) via Swing GUI Builder aka Matisse OS Platforms: All GUI Platform: Java Languages: Java only XAML (Moonlight) Editor: MonoDevelop OS Platforms: Linux and other Unix/X11 based OSes only GUI Platforms: GTK+ Languages: .NET Note: XAML is not a pure Open Source format because Microsoft controls its terms of use including the right to change the terms at any time.   • problems with user control page

    I am starting to give up troubleshooting this issue I had... I had an .ascx page and had the following user control in it: <td> <Club:DatePicker ID="dp1" runat="server" /> </td> however in my code behind when I tried to write methods: public System.DateTime startDateTime { get { return dp1.SelectedDate.Add(tp1.SelectedTime.TimeOfDay); } set { dp1.SelectedDate = value; tp1.SelectedTime = value; } } It can't reference dp1(dp1 is underlined in red) as well as tp1... why is this?? I've tried to convert the solution to a web application and yet it doesn't work.   • How big can a user agent string get?

    If you were going to store a user agent in a database, how large would you accomdate for? I found this technet article which recommends keeping UA under 200. It doesn't look like this is defined in the HTTP specification at least not that I found. My UA is already 149 characters, and it seems like each version of .net will be adding to it. I know I can parse the string out and break it down but I'd rather not. EDIT Based on this Blog IE9 will be changing to send the short UA string. This is a good change.

I can do the following: create table test_type_table ( test_type_field test_type ); This gives me a table with one column, test_type_field. Is there an easy and automated way to instead create a table such that it has 2 columns, f1 and f2?. So that it's the equivilent to writing: create table test_type_table ( f1 varchar2(10), f2 number(5) );

  • Communication between Page and User Controls

    I have a main page that has multiple user controls on it. All the user controls have static text and some data to be retrieved from the DB. The aysnchronous DB call is clubbed at the page level and one call is made to avoid multiple calls (in the different user controls) to get the same data. I want the page and user controls to load initially with the static text and later refresh the contents obtained from the server. To sum it all up, Page Loads = Asyn calls fired on page load = Data received back from the server (XML/text/whatever) = User controls to load with this data using AJAX. What methods do I have to let the user controls know that I have the data from the server and they need to update with this data?

    I have a class that defined a user defined operator for a TCHAR*, like so CMyClass::operator const TCHAR*() const { // returns text as const TCHAR* } I want to be able to do something like CMyClass myClass; _tprintf(_T("%s"), myClass); or even _tprintf(_T("%s"), CMyClass(value)); But when trying, printf always prints (null) instead of the value. I have also tried a normal char* operator, as well variations with const etc. It only works correctly if I explicitly call the operator or do a cast, like _tprintf(_T("%s\n"), (const TCHAR*)myClass); _tprintf(_T("%s\n"), myClass.operator const TCHAR *()); However, I don't want to cast. How can this be achieved? Note, that a possibility is to create a function that has a parameter of const TCHAR*, so that it forcible calls the operator TCHAR*, but this I also don't want to implement.

  • How do I launch a WPF app from command.com. I'm getting a FontCache error.

    I know this is not ideal, but my constraint is that I have a legacy application written in Clipper. I want to launch a new, WinForms/WPF application from inside the application (to ease transition). This legacy application written in Clipper launches using: SwpRunCmd("C:\MyApp\MyBat.bat",0) The batch file contains something like this command: C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore "http://QASVR/MyApp/AppWin/MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.application#MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.application" It is launching a WinForms/WPF app that is we deploy via ClickOnce. Everything has been going well until we introduced WPF into the application. We were able to easily launch from the legacy application. Since we have introduced WPF, however, we have the following behavior. If we launch via the Clipper application first, we get an exception when launching the application. The error text is: The type initializer for 'System.Windows.FrameworkElement' threw an exception. at System.Windows.FrameworkElement..ctor() at System.Windows.Controls.Panel..ctor() at System.Windows.Controls.DockPanel..ctor() at System.Windows.Forms.Integration.AvalonAdapter..ctor(ElementHost hostControl) at System.Windows.Forms.Integration.ElementHost..ctor() at MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.Main.InitializeComponent() at MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.Main..ctor(String[] args) at MyCompany.MyApp.AppWin.Program.Main(String[] args) The type initializer for 'System.Windows.Documents.TextElement' threw an exception. at System.Windows.FrameworkElement..cctor() The type initializer for 'System.Windows.Media.FontFamily' threw an exception. at System.Windows.Media.FontFamily..ctor(String familyName) at System.Windows.SystemFonts.get_MessageFontFamily() at System.Windows.Documents.TextElement..cctor() The type initializer for 'MS.Internal.FontCache.Util' threw an exception. at MS.Internal.FontCache.Util.get_WindowsFontsUriObject() at System.Windows.Media.FontFamily.PreCreateDefaultFamilyCollection() at System.Windows.Media.FontFamily..cctor() Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined. at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind) at System.Uri..ctor(String uriString, UriKind uriKind) at MS.Internal.FontCache.Util..cctor() If we launch the application via the URL (in IE) or via the icon on the desktop first, we do not get the exception and application launches as expected. The neat thing is that whatever we launch with first determines whether the app will launch at all. So, if we launch with legacy first, it breaks right away and we can't get the app to run even if we launch with the otherwise successful URL or icon. To get it to work, we have to logout and log back in and start it from the URL or icon. If we first use the URL or the icon, we have no problem launching from the legacy application from that point forward (until we logout and come back in). One other piece of information is that we are able to simulate the problem in the following fashion. If we enter a command prompt using "cmd.exe" and execute a statement to launch from a URL, we are successful. If, however, we enter a command prompt using "command.com" and we execute that same statement, we experience the breaking behavior. We assume it is because the legacy application in Clipper uses the equivalent of command.com to create the shell to spawn the other app. We have tried a bunch of hacks like having command.com run cmd.exe or psexec and then executing, but nothing seems to work. We have some ideas for workarounds (like making the app launch on startup so we force the successful launch from a URL, making all subsequent launches successful), but they all are sub-optimal even though we have a great deal of control over our workstations. To reduce the chance that this is related to permissions, we have given the launching account administrative rights (as well as non-administrative rights in case that made a difference). Any ideas would be greatly-appreciate. Like I said, we have some work arounds, but I would love to avoid them. Thanks!

    In my c# Windows Forms application (.net 3.5 / VS 2008) I have 2 settings files resulting in one user.config file. One setting file consists of larger data, but is rarely changed. The frequently changed data are very few. However, since the saving of the settings is always writing the whole (XML) file it is always "slow". SettingsSmall.Default.Save(); // slow, even if SettingsSmall consists of little data Could I configure the settings somehow to result in two files, resulting in: SettingsSmall.Default.Save(); // should be fast SettingsBig.Default.Save(); // could be slow, is seldom saved I have seen that I can use the SecionInformation class for further customizing, however what would be the easiest approach for me? Is this possible by just changing the app.config (config.sections)?

  • Could not see memory being released on closing MFC modal dialog that hosts wpf user control using HW

    This is in continuation with my last question posted "Continuous Memory leak while using WpfHWndSource" I have to load an WPF User Control in an MFC Modal Dialog that is being invoked from the ocx control. For this I have created a MFC Regular Dll(Mixed Mode Regular dll with clr option enabled), I have created a modal dialog which will host wpf user control using HWndSource. This exported dialog is placed as a child Dialog of the above MFC dialog that is being invoked from the ocx. Ny intermediate dialog uses C++/Cli code. When the main MFC dialog is closed, I am deleteing the ptr reference of the intermediate dialog created on the heap. In the the dipose of the .Net User Control, I have set most of the references that I have created to null, unsubscribed to the events (to avoid weak refernces), unbinded from the propertes(by using clear binding). Called delete on the HwndSource and the user control(which basically calls the dispose method). But I do not see complete memory being released. Any help would be greatful.
