• Symmetrix gatekeepers on Solaris 10

  I have some Solaris machines that are connected to EMC Symmetrix for SAN storage. Apparently the Symm has a gatekeeper device that is used with the symmetrix CLI. We don't need the CLI, but I have these gatekeeper devices that constantly fill /var/adm/messages and the like with corrupt label errors. Is there anything I can do (short of deleting the devices on machine start) to get rid of them? Or should I just try to get our SAN guy to get the installer for the CLI? These things are getting annoying, and the devfsadmd daemon keeps rediscovering them on boot.

• Why do I get error 0x0070004 when trying to update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8?

  So, I'm trying to update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, but every time I attempt to, the update downloads properly, but then I get the error: Windows 8.1 This app wasn't installed - view details When I click on it, it says: Something happened and the Windows 8.1 could not be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80070004 Try again Cancel Install What does this mean? A quick Google search yields nothing. I have tried rebooting, clearing the store cache, and resetting Windows Update. A quick chkdsk scan shows no errors.   I tried logging into my computer after an "ungraceful" shutdown due to a power cut.. I got prompted with a message stating the user profile service failed the login. After reading a k/b on Microsoft I managed to re-login to the "corrupt" account by making registery edits.. But the next step (After having the ability to logon) is a major concern for me.. Would the guys at superuser suggest: 1) Carry on using said account 2) Re-install Windows to eliminate the possible chance of a reoccouring problem 3) Migrate all user data over to a new account and with that being said above. I had to issue the command line: net user administrator /active:yes to activate the hidden adminstrator account, would it be recommended/secure to disable the account or leave it active?

• Correct way to treat iptables init failure?

  Hi, I'm initializing my iptables rules via /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/iptables, using iptables-restore. This works fine, but I'm a bit worried about what would happen, if that script failed for some reason (maybe the saved iptables file is corrupt or whatever). In case the script failed, I'd like to: Start up my network interfaces without any iptables rules Start up OpenSSH server But not any other services like web server, ... (and maybe stop running instances) Is there a good canonical way to do that? Going into a lower init stage? - I haven't done that in a long time, and I think a lot about init has changed in recent years (?) - which stage should I drop to, and would the OpenSSH server and my network interfaces still run? • sqlcmd won't execute - Claims Native Client not installed properly

  I'm trying to use sqlcmd to execute some SQL scripts. Using a test command with a simple query like: sqlcmd -S HOSTNAME -d MYDATABASE -Q 'SELECT Names FROM Customers' sqlcmd does not appear to make any attempt to connect to the server as it displays this message: Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup. The native client was presumably installed as part of the SQL Server setup and likely correctly. I actually get this message on any machine with SQL server installed trying to use sqlcmd so it's not a matter of the installation being corrupt. Unfortunately the message really tells me nothing about the problem so I don't know what the real issue is. I know the SQL Native client is working properly since a vbscript was able to execute SQL queries against the database. Is there some additional configuration needed to use sqlcmd?

• How can I recover a huge folder that's been converted to a zero kb file on an NTFS partition?

  I have a 1TB drive with two 500GB partitions. One of them is being used as a Mac OS X Time Machine back up drive and the other one was NTFS and being used for storage. I had my entire 'iTunes Music' folder stored on it. Recently, there were some errors on the NTFS drive that caused chkdsk to run when in Windows, and it removed a lot of corrupt files. In this process, it converted my 'iTunes Music' folder into one zero KB file. How can I recover this? The partitions are intact and the other data on the disk is still accessible. It's just the 'iTunes Music' folder that's gone.

• Recovering with DDRescue Cannot Complete (write error: Read-only file system)

  I'm trying to recover a corrupt VDI using vdfuse to mount the VDI and using dd_rescue to rescue the borked partition. dd_rescue seems to be working fine but once it reached about half of the partition, it just STOPs and gives the following error: ddrescue: write error: Read-only file system Wait.. what? It suddenly turns the FS it is writing the recovered partition to into a read-only file system. Well... why? Will I never be able to finish this? What's going on?

When I try to mount it, the password is fine but I get an error: hdiutil attach failed no mountable file systems I read a post that says you can try to recover the volume, but I have to open it first to try to recover it. I just need to open it without TrueCrypt trying to mount it too, so I can use that partition in a data recovery program. Also it's just an image file volume. I am using the Mac version, and I have setup an alias for the truecrypt shell command, but I'm not sure how to enter the syntax! Please help. thank you! T

  Hi, My server details: OS: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 Plesk 8.xx installed (currently using Plesk to set the cronjob) I need your advice. I have 2 methods: Method 1: Using php + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (each databases has around about 25mb) Method 2: Using batch + mysqldump, create databases backup files into gzip, and then send email with attachment (same, each databases has around about 25mb) My questions: Whats the difference of using php file and batch file for cronjob? Which method is better in term of backup speed and send email, and (maybe)safety (e.g., lesser file corrupt occurance)? If i set the cronjob hourly, will it effect my web performances? I mean, lets say my website has 100++ users online now, and each user making transaction to MySQL, when I perform backup at my web peak hour, will it decrease the performances, like the loading speed, prone to errors etc??   This is a consumer app, so I will care about storage costs - I don't want to have 5x copies of data lying about. The app shards very well, so I can use MySQL and not have scaling issues. Amazon EBS has a nice baseline+snapshot backup capability that uses S3. This should have a light footprint (in terms of storage cost). BUT: the magnolia.com story scares the crap out of me: basically flawless block-level backup of a corrupt DB or filesystem. Is there anything that is nearly as storage efficient as EBS at the MySQL level?

• Windows pysical server provisioning question with HPSA 7.8

  I have a physical server that I am trying to provision Windows to. At 58% of the way through copying files form the Core to the target server, the process hangs with either a samba time-out or an error indicating that %path%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. I can build a VM on the same subnet with the same media (merely a different profile to catch the different unattend.txt file) with no issues. I can also provision RHEL5 to this server with no issues. The buildmgr logs indicate that eventually the job is timing-out. Samba logs show that connections are made, and then eventually closed - about the time that the build process times-out. Any ideas on where to look next?

The calendar is completely blank. I have performed a system restore with no luck. I have run in safe mode with no luck. I have run a check disk in DOS with no luck. Any other ideas on what I can do to find my calendar info? Could the file be corrupt? I rely on this calendar and all of my info is gone, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

  I have a client that is currently managing around 5000+ contacts via Outlook. There is also a BES Express installation in place. There are a couple problems. First, there is a corrupt contact in there somewhere that is preventing either a cabled or over the air sync of the complete list to a blackberry. The second, is that it just seems to be getting a bit unruly. They currently have a license for ACT, which I'm trying to get them to move into, but at what number does the contact list need to be at to migrate away from using Outlook/Exchange and into a real CRM solution?

• XP Mode in Windows 7 professional recently ceased to work

  I have used Windows XP Mode in Windows Professional 7 once a week for around 2 years to run Quicken 98. About 2 weeks ago the XP Mode completely stopped working. I get different responses when I try to launch. I can sometimes see a launch screen for XP (which I never used to get) which then hangs Sometimes I just get a black screen Sometimes I get an error message in a cmd like interface that says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file. I have noticed that in the tools tab at the top of the screen "enable integration features" is greyed out. Any recommendations? Ian

• Windows Photo Viewer needs more ram?

  Ok, so i went to open a picture with the Windows Photo Viewer (Default) application and it told me this: Windows Photo Viewer can't display this picture because there might not be enough memory available on your computer. Close some programs that you aren't using or free some hard disk space (if it's almost full), and then try again. So looking at my 98% ram usage (thankyou VisualStudio x8 + SQL Server) I rebooted my computer. Now this is my load: And this is my hard-disk loadout: So now I go to load up that image again. SAME MESSAGE, what the heck? So apparantly 6gb isn't enough ram to open a 29k image that loads perfectly fine in MSPaint, Paint.NET, Photoshop It's a .png and it's not corrupt. So my question is: what gives?

  What is the proper way of using a USB hard drive or stick between Linux and Windows? (I'm using Linux Mint 14 and Windows XP on different machines) Should I set it up somehow so that all the files are shared and reused safely between Linux and Windows? The question comes from the recent problem I had. I've created and edited a few folders through Linux and they are not working on Windows now (folder is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt). While I dealt with that problem, what would be the way of ensuring this doesn't happen again?

• Unable to access ubuntu through windows boot manager

  I am having an ASUS K55VM....it came with DOS....to this Windows 7 was installed...now i am planned to add another OS ie Ubuntu...my computer had 4 partitions of 240GB 230GB 230GB and 230GB....i changed this to 5 parts....243GB 230GB 230GB 150GB and an 80GB...i installed Ubuntu 12.04 to the 80GB partition through a USB flash drive....it installed fine...however the problem is during the Boot option in Windows Boot manager when i choose Ubuntu...this what is displayed... Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3.Click "Repair your computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr Status: 0xc000000e Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. I tried to change the boot option for the OS and made Ubuntu as my first option....It worked...however windows 7 does not show up in GRUB....in this fear i did the following: Restarted my pc changed boot option 1 to windows. Formatted the drive to which Ubuntu was installed(80GB one)through windows. Restarted again. The problem persists....Windows boot manager shows Ubuntu still and when i choose this it gives two lines one like: grub rescue....but my windows 7 is working perfectly fine. Now want a solution to remove Ubuntu from the windows boot option and reinstall completely...

At the end of the semester, we would like to wipe out all the systems and do a clean install (WindowsXP + a set of application suites) to get ready for the next batch of students. • Database which only holds indexes and last X records in memory?

  I'm looking for a data store that is very memory efficient while still allowing many object changes per second and disregarding ACID compliance for the last X records. I need this database for a server with not much memory and I can make a key-value store, document, or SQL database work. The idea is that indexes/keys are the only thing I need in memory and all the actual values/objects/rows can be saved on disk do to the low read rate (I just want index/key lookup to be fast). I also don't want records constantly being flushed to disk, so I would like the last X number of records to be held in memory so that 100 or so of them can all be written at once. I don't care if I lose the last 10 seconds worth of objects/values. I do care if the database as a whole is in danger of becoming corrupt. Is there a data-store like this?

  One of my vital tables was being optimzied and MySQL crashed in the middle of it. It then said the table was corrupt. I am running repair but it is taking over an hour, I need this table up ASAP (I will even truncate it if necessary). Please help me get this solved. The table has about 54 million rows. • High number of ethernet errors. Tool for testing the ethernet card?

  I have an Asus Sabertooth X79. I often get corrupted files. I checked the RAM, but memtest finds no errors. To avoid the possibility of disk errors, I tried copying the files to tmpfs. If I copy from the network, I get md5sum mismatches about once every 10 times using a 6Gb file. Copying from RAM to RAM, I didn't get mismatches. I get a very high number of errors in ifconfig (compared to others PCs I just took as reference, which have 0 with much more traffic). Here is an example RX packets:13972848 errors:200 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:101 The motherboard is new, but do you think there're some problems with it? What could I use to test the (integrated) network adapter? What else do you think I should double check? --edit-- I tried another NIC, it gives a lot of Corrupted MAC on Input. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt lost connection. I noticed that another PC downloads at 11.1MB/s without problems. This pc at 66.0 MB/s. Is there any way to try to limit the speed?
