  • Contrary to Python 3.1 Docs, hash(obj) != id(obj). So which is correct?

    - by Don O'Donnell
The following is from the Python v3.1.2 documentation: From The Python Language Reference Section 3.3.1 Basic Customization: object.__hash__(self) ... User-defined classes have __eq__() and __hash__() methods by default; with them, all objects compare unequal (except with themselves) and x.__hash__() returns id(x). From The Glossary: hashable ... Objects which are instances of user-defined classes are hashable by default; they all compare unequal, and their hash value is their id(). This is true up through version 2.6.5: Python 2.6.5 (r265:79096, Mar 19 2010 21:48:26) ... ... >>> class C(object): pass ... >>> c = C() >>> id(c) 11335856 >>> hash(c) 11335856 But in version 3.1.2: Python 3.1.2 (r312:79149, Mar 21 2010, 00:41:52) ... ... >>> class C: pass ... >>> c = C() >>> id(c) 11893680 >>> hash(c) 743355 So which is it? Should I report a documentation bug or a program bug? And if it's a documentation bug, and the default hash() value for a user class instance is no longer the same as the id() value, then it would be interesting to know what it is or how it is calculated, and why it was changed in version 3.

  • Is there a leak in this copy code?

    - by Don Wilson
Is there a leak in this code? // Move the group Group *movedGroup = [[Group alloc] init]; movedGroup = [[[[GroupList sharedGroupList] groups] objectAtIndex:fromIndex] copy]; [[GroupList sharedGroupList] deleteGroup:fromIndex]; [[GroupList sharedGroupList] insertGroup:movedGroup atIndex:toIndex]; // Update the loadedGroupIndex pointer if (loadedGroupIndex < fromIndex & loadedGroupIndex >= toIndex) { loadedGroupIndex = loadedGroupIndex + 1; } else if (loadedGroupIndex > fromIndex & loadedGroupIndex < toIndex) { loadedGroupIndex = loadedGroupIndex - 1; } else if (loadedGroupIndex == fromIndex) { loadedGroupIndex = toIndex; } [movedGroup release]

  • What is the performance difference between blocks and callbacks?

    - by Don
One of the things that block objects, introduced in Snow Leopard, are good for is situations that would previously have been handled with callbacks. The syntax is much cleaner for passing context around. However, I haven't seen any information on the performance implications of using blocks in this manner. What, if any, performance pitfalls should I look out for when using blocks, particularly as a replacement for a C-style callback?

  • Layout form fields horizontally

    - by Don
    I'm using Ext JS 2.3.0 and have a bunch of fields contained within a FieldSet I'd like to have them laid out side-by-side instead, ideally with the label on top of the field instead of to the left of it. The relevant code is: var kpiFilterCombo = new Ext.form.ComboBox({ name: 'kpi', store: this.dashboardInst.servicesModel.getAvailableKPIsStore() }); var kpiLower = new Ext.form.TextField({ fieldLabel: "Lower", name: 'lowerBound' }); var kpiUpper = new Ext.form.TextField({ fieldLabel: "Higher", name: 'upperBound' }); var kpiFilterFieldset = new Ext.form.FieldSet({ title: locale['label.kpi.condition'], checkboxToggle: true, collapsed: true, autoHeight:true, items : [ kpiLower, kpiFilterCombo, kpiUpper, ] });

  • Google Calendar title displayed incorrectly

    - by Don
Hi, I'm creating 2 Google calendars via the Java client API using the following Groovy method: private CalendarEntry createGoogleCalendar(User user) throws ServiceException { new CalendarEntry().with {calendar -> title = new PlainTextConstruct(user.email) summary = new PlainTextConstruct("Collection calendar for $user.email") timeZone = new TimeZoneProperty("America/Montreal") hidden = HiddenProperty.FALSE def savedCalendar = googleCalendar.insert(CALENDAR_URL, calendar) log.debug "Created calendar with title '$savedCalendar.title.plainText' for '$user.email'" return savedCalendar } } The logs show: CalendarService - Created calendar with title '[email protected]' for '[email protected]' CalendarService - Created calendar with title '[email protected]' for '[email protected]' so it appears that all is well. However when I look at the 1st calendar on the Google website, the title is shown as [email protected], though the summary is correctly shown as Collection calendar for [email protected]. Strangely, the title and summary are both shown correctly tor the 2nd calendar. This only started happening today, and I'm pretty sure the relevant code has not changed. I'm totally stumped....

  • Generate URL for File

    - by Don
The default output of File.toURL() is file:/c:/foo/bar These don't appear to work on windows, and need to be changed to file:///c:/foo/bar Does the format file:/c:/foo/bar work correctly on Unix (I don't have a Unix machine to test on)? Is there a library that can take care of generating a URL from a File that is in the correct format for the current environment?

  • 2 or more Controls only 1 is considered Active

    - by Don
I have 2 controls (MyCtrl) next to each other called ctrlLeft and ctrlRight. Whenever one receives interaction it is considered active (by default the left one). I override OnDraw and customize the look of the active one a bit. Currently I have a property Active and an event that I subscribe to from all MyCtrl in there I store a reference to the active one like this: if (sender is MyCtrl) { ctrlActive = (sender as MyCtrl); ctrlLeft.Active = !(ctrlRight.Active = (ctrlActive == ctrlRight)); } Either way I need to have ctrlActive as I use it for other things but what I am wondering is if this is the best way make them aware of each other? Another option I thought of was to store references to every possible MyCtrl and then loop through em all and activate / deactivate the one that match sender just in case I in the future add a ctrlMiddle. Are my thoughts wrong, is there better options to do this. For example, how does radiobuttons accomplish their similar functionality?

  • Can't figure out this file behavior in IOS 4.2

    - by Don Jones
Odd behavior with file behavior. Here's the thing: I'm using the phone camera to snap a picture, and internally generating a thumbnail. I'm saving those as temp files in the Documents directory. Here's the complete code: - (void)imagePickerController:(UIImagePickerController *)picker didFinishPickingMediaWithInfo:(NSDictionary *)info { UIImage *photo = [info objectForKey:@"UIImagePickerControllerOriginalImage"]; photo = [self scaleAndRotateImage:photo]; // save photo NSString *docsDir = [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"Documents"]; NSLog(@"Writing to %@",docsDir); // save photo file NSLog(@"Saving photo as %@",[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/temp_photo.png",docsDir]); [UIImagePNGRepresentation(photo) writeToFile:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/temp_photo.png",docsDir] atomically:YES]; // make and save thumbnail NSLog(@"Saving thumbnail as %@",[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/temp_thumb.png",docsDir]); UIImage *thumb = [self makeThumbnail:photo]; [UIImagePNGRepresentation(thumb) writeToFile:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/temp_thumb.png",docsDir] atomically:YES]; NSFileManager *manager = [NSFileManager defaultManager]; NSError *error; NSArray *files = [manager contentsOfDirectoryAtPath:docsDir error:&error]; NSLog(@"\n\nThere are %d files in the documents directory %@",(files.count),docsDir); for (int i = 0; i < files.count; i++) { NSString *filename = [files objectAtIndex:i]; NSLog(@"Seeing filename %@",filename); } // done //[photo release]; //[thumb release]; [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:NO]; [delegate textInputFinished]; } As you can see, I've put quite a bit of logging in here in an attempt to figure out my problem (which is coming up). The log output to this point is: Writing to /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents Saving photo as /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents/temp_photo.png Saving thumbnail as /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents/temp_thumb.png There are 3 files in the documents directory /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents Seeing filename temp_photo.png Seeing filename temp_text.txt Seeing filename temp_thumb.png This is absolutely as-expected. I clearly have three files on the device. Here's the very next code that operates - the code that received the textInputFinished message: - (void)textInputFinished { NSFileManager *fileManager = [NSFileManager defaultManager]; NSString *docsDir = [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"Documents"]; NSError *error; // get next filename NSString *filename; int i = 0; do { i++; filename = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/reminder_%d",docsDir,i]; NSLog(@"Trying filename %@",filename); } while ([fileManager fileExistsAtPath:[filename stringByAppendingString:@".txt"]]); NSLog(@"New base filename is %@",filename); NSArray *files = [fileManager contentsOfDirectoryAtPath:docsDir error:&error]; NSLog(@"There are %d files in the directory %@",(files.count),docsDir); This is testing to get a new, non-temp, not-in-use filename. It does that - but then it says there aren't any files in the documents folder! Here's the logged output: Trying filename /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents/reminder_1 New base filename is /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents/reminder_1 There are 0 files in the directory /var/mobile/Applications/77D792DC-A224-4A47-8A4C-BB7C557626F3/Documents What the heck? Where did the three files go?

  • Reset application and settings on user change

    - by Don
Currently working on a project where a login will be required to use the application. I'm trying to figure out a smarter way to reset the application if someone is somehow logged out and the next one to login is not the same user. The option I have come up with at the moment is storing all user specific data/information in a DTO but this leaves me with cleaning up some parts of the work area. Is a ResetControls my only option here? I'm afraid that when updating the application someone might forget to update that part, most likely myself now that wrote it out. Anybody with experience in this that could provide some ideas to a simple yet fairly automagic solution?

  • onDraw() triggered but results don't show

    - by Don
    I have the following routine in a subclass of view: It calculates an array of points that make up a line, then erases the previous lines, then draws the new lines (impact refers to the width in pixels drawn with multiple lines). The line is your basic bell curve, squeezed or stretched by variance and x-factor. Unfortunately, nothing shows on the screen. A previous version with drawPoint() and no array worked, and I've verified the array contents are being loaded correctly, and I can see that my onDraw() is being triggered. Any ideas why it might not be drawn? Thanks in advance! protected void drawNewLine( int maxx, int maxy, Canvas canvas, int impact, double variance, double xFactor, int color) { // impact = 2 to 8; xFactor between 4 and 20; variance between 0.2 and 5 double x = 0; double y = 0; int cx = maxx / 2; int cy = maxy / 2; int mu = cx; int index = 0; points[maxx<<1][1] = points[maxx<<1][0]; for (x = 0; x < maxx; x++) { points[index][1] = points[index][0]; points[index][0] = (float) x; Log.i(DEBUG_TAG, "x: " + x); index++; double root = 1.0 / (Math.sqrt(2 * Math.PI * variance)); double exponent = -1.0 * (Math.pow(((x - mu)/maxx*xFactor), 2) / (2 * variance)); double ePow = Math.exp(exponent); y = Math.round(cy * root * ePow); points[index][1] = points[index][0]; points[index][0] = (float) (maxy - y - OFFSET); index++; } points[maxx<<1][0] = (float) impact; for (int line = 0; line < points[maxx<<1][1]; line++) { for (int pt = 0; pt < (maxx<<1); pt++) { pointsToPaint[pt] = points[pt][1]; } for (int skip = 1; skip < (maxx<<1); skip = skip + 2) pointsToPaint[skip] = pointsToPaint[skip] + line; myLinePaint.setColor(Color.BLACK); canvas.drawLines(pointsToPaint, bLinePaint); // draw over old lines w/blk } for (int line = 0; line < points[maxx<<1][0]; line++) { for (int pt = 0; pt < maxx<<1; pt++) { pointsToPaint[pt] = points[pt][0]; } for (int skip = 1; skip < maxx<<1; skip = skip + 2) pointsToPaint[skip] = pointsToPaint[skip] + line; myLinePaint.setColor(color); canvas.drawLines(pointsToPaint, myLinePaint); / new color } } update: Replaced the drawLines() with drawPoint() in loop, still no joy for (int p = 0; p<pointsToPaint.length; p = p + 2) { Log.i(DEBUG_TAG, "x " + pointsToPaint[p] + " y " + pointsToPaint[p+1]); canvas.drawPoint(pointsToPaint[p], pointsToPaint[p+1], myLinePaint); } /// canvas.drawLines(pointsToPaint, myLinePaint);

  • PHP> Sort query results by name while letting each letter be on the top sometimes

    - by Don
Hi, I'm currently working on a site that will display a list of online shops, Each shop will be stored on my database and I'll be using PHP to select and display them. But since those shops will pay me, I want to let each shop to be on the top of the list sometimes, (for example if the shop name starts with a "Z", they will probably complain for being on the bottom of the list all the time, so I want to keep it fair). So I thought about letting each letter be on the top of the list for an hour, but i have no idea how to do that.. Is that even possible? Thanks in advance!

  • PHP mail function, some clients aren't showing my mails as html?

    - by Don
I'm trying to send emails to my website members using the mail() function with PHP, The mails are in hebrew, and I want to send an html email, That's pretty much how I send it $mail_to = "[email protected]"; $message = " <html> some content here </html> "; $headers = "MIME-Version: 1.0" . "\r\n"; $headers .= "Content-type:text/html;charset=windows-1255" . "\r\n"; $headers .= 'From: "MyWebsiteName" <[email protected]>' . "\r\n"; $mail = mail($mail_to, $subject, $message, $headers ); It works completely fine with clients such as Gmail, or thunderbird users, but I viewed it in a few other clients, that aren't so famous, but still widely used in my country, and it just shows me the html source.. I'll also add that I've seen other mails in those clients that are working fine, so they are supporting html mails. What am I doing wrong?

  • m and s keys do not work over vnc connection to ubuntu server

    - by Don
I'm new at setting a lot of this up, so bear with me. I installed Ubuntu 10.4 server on a 64 bit machine. Then I added vnc so I could manage it while it's racked. I start the server, SSH to it, and run vncserver :1 At this point, all keys work fine. Next I exit out of the SSH session and fire up my client vnc app. I connect via the IP :1, enter my password, and everything seems to be fine. Now when I enter a terminal (through the vnc connection) I cannot type lowercase "s" or "m" (upper case works). I've tried on two different pc's running the vnc client, but it's the same. I also installed the latest updates from Ubuntu as of today. Thanks for any help.

  • Image is not displaying in email template on 2nd time forward

    - by Don
Good day Friends, I've a mass mailing program with simple mail templates (HTML and few Images). I've a problem with image display. My clients are not getting images in the mail. Sometimes they get a mail with all the images, But if they forward the same email to someone else, they can’t get the images in forwarded mail. I really don’t know what’s happening with the approach., most of the cases the 2nd time forwarded mail is not showing the images properly. For example, consider I send a mail to client A, Here, Client A will get a mail with Images. Further, If Client A forward the same message to Person B then Person B is not getting Images in the Forwarded email. I’m using the following Approach to Embed an image in the mail template: StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(" <some html content> <img src=\"cid:main.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" usemap=\"#Map\"> </html content ends here>"); Attachment imgMain = new Attachment(Server.MapPath("main.png")); imgMain.ContentId = "main.png"; MailMessageObject.Attachments.Add(imgMain); Instead of attachment, I tried bypassing the Image path from server directly. Something like as follows: StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(" <some html content> <img src=\"www.mydomain.com/images/main.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" usemap=\"#Map\"> </html content ends here>"); But, result is same, Please help to resolve this problem

  • using google maps api without a key

    - by Don
The instructions for v.3 of the Google Maps API say that I should load the Maps API using an API key Curiously it says I should..., rather than I must..... Anyhow, at the moment, I am not using an API key simply because (as far as I can remember) there was no mention of an API key when I was writing the code that calls this API. Should I go back and add an API key to the URL that loads the API? It seems to work fine without the key, so I don't have any particular incentive to do this.

  • error 1202 - ERROR_DEVICE_ALREADY_REMEMBERED in WNetAddConnection2A

    - by Don
I used the function - WNetAddConnection2A(n, UserName, Password, dwFlags) to programmatically map a drive and read the drive info out, and then used WNetCancelConnection2A(DriveLetter, dwFlags, ForceDisconnect) to unmap the drive. The first map and unmap were fine. But the next map will bring me the error 1202 - ERROR_DEVICE_ALREADY_REMEMBERED when the same driver letter is used. I set dwFlags = 0. It works in my development machine but fails in server. How to eliminate the error 1202? Thanks!

  • Tune cindent "switch" indentation

    - by Don Reba
Nemerle is a C-like language and mostly works very well with cindent. However, its construct analogous to switch is called match: match (x) { | "Hello World" => ... | _ => ... } Is it possible to get the cinoptions for switch statements to apply to this construct, instead? Maybe there is a regular expression I can set somewhere. If not, can I get the vertical bars to align with the braces another way?

  • How to change data structure in mysql using mysqldump without deleting files

    - by Don Quixote
Essentially what I'm trying to do is sync a production server with a sandbox server, but only the table structures and stored procedures. The procedures aren't any problem since they can be overriden, but the problem is the tables. I want to sync and alter their structures on the production server using mysqldump (or any other way that you can propose) without altering any existing data. If it helps, I only want to add more columns, not remove any existing ones. Also, I am using mysqlyog. Is there any way to do this?

  • How to Reduce the Size of Your WinSXS Folder on Windows 7 or 8

    - by Chris Hoffman
The WinSXS folder at C:\Windows\WinSXS is massive and continues to grow the longer you have Windows installed. This folder builds up unnecessary files over time, such as old versions of system components. This folder also contains files for uninstalled, disabled Windows components. Even if you don’t have a Windows component installed, it will be present in your WinSXS folder, taking up space. Why the WinSXS Folder Gets to Big The WinSXS folder contains all Windows system components. In fact, component files elsewhere in Windows are just links to files contained in the WinSXS folder. The WinSXS folder contains every operating system file. When Windows installs updates, it drops the new Windows component in the WinSXS folder and keeps the old component in the WinSXS folder. This means that every Windows Update you install increases the size of your WinSXS folder. This allows you to uninstall operating system updates from the Control Panel, which can be useful in the case of a buggy update — but it’s a feature that’s rarely used. Windows 7 dealt with this by including a feature that allows Windows to clean up old Windows update files after you install a new Windows service pack. The idea was that the system could be cleaned up regularly along with service packs. However, Windows 7 only saw one service pack — Service Pack 1 — released in 2010. Microsoft has no intention of launching another. This means that, for more than three years, Windows update uninstallation files have been building up on Windows 7 systems and couldn’t be easily removed. Clean Up Update Files To fix this problem, Microsoft recently backported a feature from Windows 8 to Windows 7. They did this without much fanfare — it was rolled out in a typical minor operating system update, the kind that don’t generally add new features. To clean up such update files, open the Disk Cleanup wizard (tap the Windows key, type “disk cleanup” into the Start menu, and press Enter). Click the Clean up System Files button, enable the Windows Update Cleanup option and click OK. If you’ve been using your Windows 7 system for a few years, you’ll likely be able to free several gigabytes of space. The next time you reboot after doing this, Windows will take a few minutes to clean up system files before you can log in and use your desktop. If you don’t see this feature in the Disk Cleanup window, you’re likely behind on your updates — install the latest updates from Windows Update. Windows 8 and 8.1 include built-in features that do this automatically. In fact, there’s a StartComponentCleanup scheduled task included with Windows that will automatically run in the background, cleaning up components 30 days after you’ve installed them. This 30-day period gives you time to uninstall an update if it causes problems. If you’d like to manually clean up updates, you can also use the Windows Update Cleanup option in the Disk Usage window, just as you can on Windows 7. (To open it, tap the Windows key, type “disk cleanup” to perform a search, and click the “Free up disk space by removing unnecessary files” shortcut that appears.) Windows 8.1 gives you more options, allowing you to forcibly remove all previous versions of uninstalled components, even ones that haven’t been around for more than 30 days. These commands must be run in an elevated Command Prompt — in other words, start the Command Prompt window as Administrator. For example, the following command will uninstall all previous versions of components without the scheduled task’s 30-day grace period: DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup The following command will remove files needed for uninstallation of service packs. You won’t be able to uninstall any currently installed service packs after running this command: DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /SPSuperseded The following command will remove all old versions of every component. You won’t be able to uninstall any currently installed service packs or updates after this completes: DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase Remove Features on Demand Modern versions of Windows allow you to enable or disable Windows features on demand. You’ll find a list of these features in the Windows Features window you can access from the Control Panel. Even features you don’t have installed — that is, the features you see unchecked in this window — are stored on your hard drive in your WinSXS folder. If you choose to install them, they’ll be made available from your WinSXS folder. This means you won’t have to download anything or provide Windows installation media to install these features. However, these features take up space. While this shouldn’t matter on typical computers, users with extremely low amounts of storage or Windows server administrators who want to slim their Windows installs down to the smallest possible set of system files may want to get these files off their hard drives. For this reason, Windows 8 added a new option that allows you to remove these uninstalled components from the WinSXS folder entirely, freeing up space. If you choose to install the removed components later, Windows will prompt you to download the component files from Microsoft. To do this, open a Command Prompt window as Administrator. Use the following command to see the features available to you: DISM.exe /Online /English /Get-Features /Format:Table You’ll see a table of feature names and their states. To remove a feature from your system, you’d use the following command, replacing NAME with the name of the feature you want to remove. You can get the feature name you need from the table above. DISM.exe /Online /Disable-Feature /featurename:NAME /Remove If you run the /GetFeatures command again, you’ll now see that the feature has a status of “Disabled with Payload Removed” instead of just “Disabled.” That’s how you know it’s not taking up space on your computer’s hard drive. If you’re trying to slim down a Windows system as much as possible, be sure to check out our lists of ways to free up disk space on Windows and reduce the space used by system files.

  • Working With Extended Events

    - by Fatherjack
SQL Server 2012 has made working with Extended Events (XE) pretty simple when it comes to what sessions you have on your servers and what options you have selected and so forth but if you are like me then you still have some SQL Server instances that are 2008 or 2008 R2. For those servers there is no built-in way to view the Extended Event sessions in SSMS. I keep coming up against the same situations – Where are the xel log files? What events, actions or predicates are set for the events on the server? What sessions are there on the server already? I got tired of this being a perpetual question and wrote some TSQL to save as a snippet in SQL Prompt so that these details are permanently only a couple of clicks away. First, some history. If you just came here for the code skip down a few paragraphs and it’s all there. If you want a little time to reminisce about SQL Server then stick with me through the next paragraph or two. We are in a bit of a cross-over period currently, there are many versions of SQL Server but I would guess that SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2 and 2012 comprise the majority of installations. With each of these comes a set of management tools, of which SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is one. In 2008 and 2008 R2 Extended Events made their first appearance and there was no way to work with them in the SSMS interface. At some point the Extended Events guru Jonathan Kehayias (http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/jonathan/) created the SQL Server 2008 Extended Events SSMS Addin which is really an excellent tool to ease XE session administration. This addin will install in SSMS 2008 or 2008R2 but not SSMS 2012. If you use a compatible version of SSMS then I wholly recommend downloading and using it to make your work with XE much easier. If you have SSMS 2012 installed, and there is no reason not to as it will let you work with all versions of SQL Server, then you cannot install this addin. If you are working with SQL Server 2012 then SSMS 2012 has built in functionality to manage XE sessions – this functionality does not apply for 2008 or 2008 R2 instances though. This means you are somewhat restricted and have to use TSQL to manage XE sessions on older versions of SQL Server. OK, those of you that skipped ahead for the code, you need to start from here: So, you are working with SSMS 2012 but have a SQL Server that is an earlier version that needs an XE session created or you think there is a session created but you aren’t sure, or you know it’s there but can’t remember if it is running and where the output is going. How do you find out? Well, none of the information is hidden as such but it is a bit of a wrangle to locate it and it isn’t a lot of code that is unlikely to remain in your memory. I have created two pieces of code. The first examines the SYS.Server_Event_… management views in combination with the SYS.DM_XE_… management views to give the name of all sessions that exist on the server, regardless of whether they are running or not and two pieces of TSQL code. One piece will alter the state of the session: if the session is running then the code will stop the session if executed and vice versa. The other piece of code will drop the selected session. If the session is running then the code will stop it first. Do not execute the DROP code unless you are sure you have the Create code to hand. It will be dropped from the server without a second chance to change your mind. /**************************************************************/ /***   To locate and describe event sessions on a server    ***/ /***                                                        ***/ /***   Generates TSQL to start/stop/drop sessions           ***/ /***                                                        ***/ /***        Jonathan Allen - @fatherjack                    ***/ /***                 June 2013                                ***/ /***                                                        ***/ /**************************************************************/ SELECT  [EES].[name] AS [Session Name - all sessions] ,         CASE WHEN [MXS].[name] IS NULL THEN ISNULL([MXS].[name], 'Stopped')              ELSE 'Running'         END AS SessionState ,         CASE WHEN [MXS].[name] IS NULL              THEN ISNULL([MXS].[name],                          'ALTER EVENT SESSION [' + [EES].[name]                          + '] ON SERVER STATE = START;')              ELSE 'ALTER EVENT SESSION [' + [EES].[name]                   + '] ON SERVER STATE = STOP;'         END AS ALTER_SessionState ,         CASE WHEN [MXS].[name] IS NULL              THEN ISNULL([MXS].[name],                          'DROP EVENT SESSION [' + [EES].[name]                          + '] ON SERVER; -- This WILL drop the session. It is possible to recreate the sessions but that is a whole lot of aggravation I’d rather avoid. The second piece of code gathers details of running XE sessions only and provides information on the Events being collected, any predicates that are set on those events, the actions that are set to be collected, where the collected information is being logged and if that logging is to a file target, where that file is located. /**********************************************/ /***    Running Session summary                ***/ /***                                        ***/ /***    Details key values of XE sessions     ***/ /***    that are in a running state            ***/ /***                                        ***/ /***        Jonathan Allen - @fatherjack    ***/ /***        June 2013                        ***/ /***                                        ***/ /**********************************************/ SELECT  [EES].[name] AS [Session Name - running sessions] ,         [EESE].[name] AS [Event Name] ,         COALESCE([EESE].[predicate], 'unfiltered') AS [Event Predicate Filter(s)] ,         [EESA].[Action] AS [Event Action(s)] ,         [EEST].[Target] AS [Session Target(s)] ,         ISNULL([EESF].[value], 'No file target in use') AS [File_Target_UNC] -- select * FROM    [sys].[server_event_sessions] AS EES         INNER JOIN [sys].[dm_xe_sessions] AS MXS ON [EES].[name] = [MXS].[name]         INNER JOIN [sys].[server_event_session_events] AS [EESE] ON [EES].[event_session_id] = [EESE].[event_session_id]         LEFT JOIN [sys].[server_event_session_fields] AS EESF ON ( [EES].[event_session_id] = [EESF].[event_session_id]                                                               AND [EESF].[name] = 'filename'                                                               )         CROSS APPLY ( SELECT    STUFF(( SELECT  ', ' + sest.name                                         FROM    [sys].[server_event_session_targets]                                                 AS SEST                                         WHERE   [EES].[event_session_id] = [SEST].[event_session_id]                                       FOR                                         XML PATH('')                                       ), 1, 2, '') AS [Target]                     ) AS EEST         CROSS APPLY ( SELECT    STUFF(( SELECT  ', ' + [sesa].NAME                                         FROM    [sys].[server_event_session_actions]                                                 AS sesa                                         WHERE   [sesa].[event_session_id] = [EES].[event_session_id]                                       FOR                                         XML PATH('')                                       ), 1, 2, '') AS [Action]                     ) AS EESA WHERE   [EES].[name] NOT IN ( 'system_health', 'AlwaysOn_health' ) /*Optional to exclude 'out-of-the-box' traces*/ I hope that these scripts are useful to you and I would be obliged if you would keep my name in the script comments.
