• How can I do a 'where' clause in Linux shell?

  I have a CSV file and I would like to filter all the lines where the 19th column has two or more characters. I know the individual pieces but can't figure out how to glue them together. First I have to cat the file. The following prints the 19th column awk -F "," '{print $19}' file.txt awk also has length and ifs And I know it all has to be glued together using pipes. I'm just getting stuck at the exact syntax since I have not done much bash programming before.

• alias not working on sql server 2008 r2

  I have several servers with SQL Server 2008 R2 instances on them, and alias doesn't work on any of them. Clients connect to these servers using TCP/IP without any problem, telnet works on IP/Port I use for my alias, the firewall exceptions are created, basically everything works fine, except when I create an alias, I can not connect through it to my server using either TCP/IP or named pipes (local or one of other servers). I've installed latest cumulative updates, which updates native client too (which I think is the source of problem) and I still have the problem. The stranger part is, if I create an alias on a server with sql server 2005 (native client 9), I can connect to my 2008 r2 instances. Any suggestions?

• Detecting and interacting with long running process

  I want a script to start and interact with a long running process. The process is started first time the script is executed, after that the script can be executed repeatedly, but will detect that the process is already running. The script should be able to interact with the process. I would like this to work on Unix and Windows. I am unsure how I do this. Specifically how do I detect if the process is already running and open a pipe to it? Should I use sockets (e.g. registering the server process on a known port and then check if it responds) or should I use "named pipes"? Or is there some easier way?

• sql connection problem only from another computer

  I have a task that runs nightly. It connects to a sql server on our network and when I run it from my machine it runs fine. When it runs from the other computer I get the following error. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I've checked with our systems admin and he said nothing has changed on the sql box or on the box in question so I'm not sure why it runs fine from one and not the other. From what I've read about this error it sounds like it's a setting on the sql server that would disallow it to run on either box.

  Is LocalDB supported by Visual Studio 2010 in Entity Framework 5, on .NET 4.0? Or am I doing it wrong? I'm getting a "The network path can't be found" issue when instantiating my model container with a connection string for LocalDB.   Hopefully this isn't considered too off-topic, but I guess we'll see. I'd love to find and frame a copy of this book. Years ago, in my pre-teen years, I remember reading a lot of CYOA books, and one in particular stands out in my mind as the book that started me down the path of becoming a programmer. The details are fuzzy, but what I remember was that the story involved a programmer who was held captive somewhere and was trying to escape. IIRC, each section or chapter had a short BASIC program you could could type into your computer to simulate something from the story. The one that stands out most in my mind was a very simplistic animation made with pipes, pluses, and dashes that "looked" like a metal grate that opened (sliding upward). I realize this is pretty scant information to go on, but I suspect that anyone else who read the book would immediately remember it. Maybe not, I guess we'll see. Again, my apologies if this is too far off-topic for S.O.

• How to re-open a closed file descriptor

  I have a scenario where i created pipe for communication between two child and parent. Parent writes (using write function)data to the pipe and closes the respective file descriptor. The problem is when i want to write data again to the pipe, the write function is returning error code -1. I think its because writing end has been closed in previous iteration. Then how to open the corresponding file descriptor after it has been closed once. I tried using open() function which requires path to some file as arguement. But i am not using any files in my application. I have simple file descriptors (int arr[2]). Is it possible to achieve above scenario with pipes????

  Hi, I'm getting the following error when trying to load an Asp.NET MVC App on IIS 7 with Sql Server 2008 Express. The App uses Linq to SQL. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I've done some searching and all answers point to enabling TCP connections in Sql Server Configuration which I have done to no avail. The connection string I am using is: Server=SERVERNAME\SQLEXPRESS;Database=DBName;Integrated Security=true The catch. I have another app that already could talk to the Sql Server just fine. Even before playing around with the Sql Server Configuration Settings. The other app uses the following connectionstring: Data Source=SERVERNAME\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=OtherDbName;Integrated Security=True;Persist Security Info=False;Connect Timeout=120 I've tried this connectionstring on the app that isn't working and it still doesn't work.   I've setup the instance SQLEXPRESS via SQL Server 2008 R2 installation, added a security login with all server roles, one called 'sqluser'. The server authentication is SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode. However, when i specify the -S property, login fails. There is no firewall enabled and SQL server even accepts connections from remote hosts. C:\Users\user>sqlcmd -U sqluser -P qwerty -Q "Select * FROM testdb.dbo.testtable" Output: integer ------- 1 2 3 4 (4 rows affected) However when specifying 'localhost' the query fails... Question is Why? C:\Users\user>sqlcmd -S localhost/sqlexpress -U cpt -P 1234 -Q "Select * FROM cpt.dbo.testme" Output: HResult 0x43, Level 16, State 1 Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [67]. Changing 'localhost' with '%COMPUTERNAME' is same result if someone would be wondering. The server is running as a LocalSystem instance.

• Get-ChildItem fails to connect in SQLSERVER drive

  I'm having some trouble with the SQLSERVER PSDRIVE. See error below. I only have named instances on my PC, both 2005 and 2008 Added the SQL snapins. The PC is named YODA The SQL instance is SQL2008 Navigate to the Databases folder for YODA\SQL2008. You can see the path below. dir -name spits out a connection error trying to connect to YODASQL2008\DEFAULT when it should be trying to connect to YODA\SQL2008. Then it outputs the db name which is Twitter in this case. Is there something missing from my config?   Hi , It's 3 days I'm trying to install SqlServer 2005 under Windows 7 64 bit on my computer. First let me tell you what I've done and what I've got till now . 1-I Installed Windows 7 64 Bit on my computer 2-I tried to install SQl Server 2005 "Developer Edition" 2.1 But in "System Configuration Check" Page i recieved 2 warning , One for "IIS Feature Requirement" and another for "ASP.NET Version Registration Rquired" . 2.1.1 . I installed "Internet Information Services" from "Turn Windows features on or off" section in control panel 2.1.2 I Enabled reporting service 32 bit from "Inetpub= AdminScripts = adsutil.vbs" 2.2 At this stage There was no waring in System Configuration Check 3- So I installed SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition By all default settings 4- I installed Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 64 bit Now when when i run "Management Studio" There is no name in "Server name" section . I typed my Computer name Or "." and i got this Error : A network -related instance-specific error occurred while establishinga connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider , error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server ) ( Microsoft SQL Server , Error :2) . • Cannot upload files bigger than 8GB to Amazon S3 by multi-part upload due to broken pipe

  I implemented S3 multi-part upload, both high level and low level version, based on the sample code from http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/index.html?HLuploadFileJava.html and http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/index.html?llJavaUploadFile.html When I uploaded files of size less than 4 GB, the upload processes completed without any problem. When I uploaded a file of size 13 GB, the code started to show IO exception, broken pipes. After retries, it still failed. Here is the way to repeat the scenario. Take 1.1.7.1 release, create a new bucket in US standard region create a large EC2 instance as the client to upload file create a file of 13GB in size on the EC2 instance. run the sample code on either one of the high-level or low-level API S3 documentation pages from the EC2 instance test either one of the three part size: default part size (5 MB) or set the part size to 100,000,000 or 200,000,000 bytes. So far the problem shows up consistently. I attached here a tcpdump file for you to compare. In there, the host on the S3 side kept resetting the socket.

• Login failed for user 'XXX' on the mirrored sql server

  We have 4 web servers that host our asp.net (3.5) application. Randomly, we get error messages like : 1) "Login failed for user 'userid'" 2) "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" we are running sql2005 and have a principle and a mirror db (sync). When these exceptions are thrown, I look at the SQL error logs on the mirrored db and noticed the failed login messages in there. The principle db is running fine and the other web apps are working great. this will happen for maybe 10 min, then the app pool recycles and it starts hitting the principle db again. Is there a configuration I have incorrect? my theory is that our principle db is forwarding the request to the mirror, but that should never happen. any help??

• Persistent routes for DD-WRT PPTP VPN client

  My home network in the USA is behind a Buffalo router (G300NH) running their version of DD-WRT. I use the built-in PPTP VPN client to connect to a VPN provider in the UK. I route certain traffic over the VPN (so it has a UK source address, for various entirely legal reasons) which I achieved by following the instructions in the DD-WRT docs and my VPN provider's own instructions. I placed two commands like this in the firewall script: route add -net xxx.xxx.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 dev ppp0 route add -net yyy.yyy.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 dev ppp0 I didn't put any of the iptables rules in since it my setup doesn't seem to need them. It works like a charm. Traffic to the xxx subnets goes over the VPN, everything else goes out over my ISPs own pipes. The problem comes when the VPN drops, which it does occasionally. DD-WRT does a fine job of reconnecting it automatically, but the routes are trashed every time that happens. How do I automate the process of re-establishing my routes? I thought about static routes, but the IP address of the VPN connection is dynamically assigned (which is why I'm using dev ppp0). Many thanks, Tim

• Anonymous access to SMB share hosted on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

  Hi all, First off, I have read through this post and a whole slew of non-SF posts which seem to address the same or a similar problem, however I was still unable to fix my problem. I've got three machines in this situation: a domain-joined server that runs Server 2008 R2 Enterprise ("share server") a domain-joined workstation running XP Pro SP3 ("test server") a domain-unjoined test server running Server 2003 R2 SP2 ("workstation") The share server is exposing a share on the network that the test server must access--it's a Source/Symbol Server share for our debugging purposes. I believe visual studio simply accesses the the share with its own credentials in this case, meaning that the share must be accessible anonymously since the test server isn't joined to the domain and there's no opportunity to supply domain authentication. I've attempted a lot of things to avoid the authentication window when accessing the share: I've enabled the Guest account on the share server and given Guest full sharing/NTFS permissions for the share. I've given ANONYMOUS LOGON full sharing/NTFS permissions for the share. I've added my share to “Network Access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously” in LSP. I've disabled “Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares” in LSP. I've enabled “Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users” in LSP. Added ANONYMOUS LOGON to “Access this computer from the network” in LSP. Added the Guest account to “Access this computer from the network” in LSP. Attempted to provision the share using the Share and Storage Management MMC snap-in. Unfortunately when I attempt to access the share from the test server, I still see the prompt and I'm forced to enter "Guest" manually. I also tried this workflow using the local administrator account on a workstation, and the same thing happens both with and without XP Simple File Sharing enabled. Any idea why I'm getting these results, or what I should have done differently?

• How do I secure Sql Server 2008 R2

  I have both a dedicated and a VPS (from Fasthosts) virtual server - the web sites/applications I run on these, access Sql Server stored on the same web server. Until now, I have logged onto Sql Server on both the deidicated and VPS server, from Sql Server Management Studio - until I noticed in my server application logs, multiple attempts to logon to Sql Server using the 'sa' username, but failed password. So someone/bot is trying hard (repeatedly every couple of hours, for approx 20 attempts during each instance) to log on... so obviously I have to lock down access to Sql Sever remotely. What I have done is gone into Configuration Manager, and in Sql Server Network Configuration - Protocols for Sql2008 and also in Sql Native Client 10.0 Configuration - Client Protocols - I have diabled Named Pipes, TCP/IP (and VIA by default). I have left Shared Memory enabled. I also disabled in Sql Server Services, the Sql Server Browser. Now the only way I can manage the databases on these servers, is by logging on to them via Remote Desktop. Can anyone confirm if this is the correct way of stopping anyone maliciously logging on to Sql Server? (I'm not a DBA or security expert - and there are hundreds of articles advising all different ways - but I was hoping for the experts here to confirm, or otherwise, if what I've done is correct) Thank you, Mark

  I have used following grep search pattern on multiple platforms: grep -r -I -D skip 'string_to_match' / For example on FreeBSD 8.0, FreeBSD 6.4 and Debian 6.0(squeeze). Command does a recursive search starting from root directory, assumes that binary files do not have the 'string_to_match' and skips devices, sockets and named pipes. FreeBSD 8.0 and FreeBSD 6.4 use GNU grep version 2.5.1 and Debian 6.0 uses GNU grep version 2.6.3. On FreeBSD 6.4, last information printed to stderr was "grep: /dev/cuad0: Device busy". After this grep just idles as according to "top -m io -o total" the I/O usage of grep is nonexistent. Same behavior is true under FreeBSD 8.0, but last information sent to stderr is "grep: /tmp/.wine-0: Permission denied" on my installation. In case of Debian, last output to stderr is "grep: /proc/sysrq-trigger: Input/output error". I'm not able to use lsof or fstat under FreeBSD. PS: I know I could use find utility, but this is not the question.

• Selectively allow unsafe html tags in Plone

  I'm searching for a way to put widgets from several services (PicasaWeb, Yahoo Pipes, Delicious bookmarks, etc.) on the community site I host on Plone (currently 3.2.1). I'm looking for a way to allow a group of users to use dangerous html tags. There are some ways I see, but I don't know how to implement those. One would be changing safe_html for the pages editors own (1). Another would be to allow those tags on some subtree (2). And yet another finding an equivalent of "static text portlet" that would display in the middle panel (3). We could then use some of the composite products (I stumbled upon Collage and CMFContentPanels), to include the unsafe content on other sites. My site has been ridden by advert bots, so I don't want to remove the filtering all together. I don't have an easy (no false positives) way of checking which users are bots, so deploying captcha now wouldn't help either. The question is: How to implement any of those solutions? (I already asked that on plone mailing list without an answer, so I thought I would give it another try here.)

  I would like the output of A to be input for B and at the same time the output of B to be the input for A, is that possible? I tried the naïve thing: creating named pipes for A (pipeA) and B (pipeB) and then: pipeB | A | pipeA & pipeA | B | pipeB & But that does not work (pipeB is empty and switching the order would not help either). Any help would be appreciated. • Anonymous file sharing without login window, from Windows 7 server to XP clients

  I'm trying to provide machines on a small LAN with read-only, anonymous access to files shared from a Windows 7 workstation (let's call it WIN7SVR). In particular, I don't want clients to have to deal with a login window when they navigate to, e.g., \\WIN7SVR in Windows Explorer, but we do not have a domain and synchronizing accounts between the server and clients would be intractable. There are both Windows 7 and Windows XP clients that need access to these shares. I got this working for Windows 7 clients by just enabling the Guest account on WIN7SVR and setting appropriate share permissions. Other Windows 7 machines automatically try logging in as Guest, it seems, so their users don't have to deal with the login window. The problem is with the XP clients--they can access the server if the user enters "Guest" in the login window, but I don't want users to have to do that. So from what I gather, in my limited understanding of Windows file sharing, this boils down to granting null sessions access to file shares on WIN7SVR. But I've had no success so far on that front. I've tried all the following in the local group policy editor on the Windows 7 server: Set Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users to Enabled Set Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares to Disabled Added the names of corresponding shares to Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously Added "ANONYMOUS LOGON" to Access this computer from the network under User Rights Assignment Any advice would be highly appreciated... I'm mostly a Unix guy, so I feel somewhat out of my league with Windows file sharing. I do understand that any sort of anonymous access to file shares isn't generally ideal from a security standpoint, but it's the most practical solution for us in this case, and access to our network is well enough controlled that share-level security isn't a concern.

• Login failed for user 'XXX' on the mirrored sql server

  Hello, We have 4 web servers that host our asp.net (3.5) application. Randomly, we get error messages like : 1) "Login failed for user 'userid'" 2) "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" we are running sql2005 and have a principle and a mirror db (sync). When these exceptions are thrown, I look at the SQL error logs on the mirrored db and noticed the failed login messages in there. The principle db is running fine and the other web apps are working great. this will happen for maybe 10 min, then the app pool recycles and it starts hitting the principle db again. Is there a configuration I have incorrect? my theory is that our principle db is forwarding the request to the mirror, but that should never happen. any help??

  Hello, I'm struggling to find a way to connect my Asp .Net + C# application with my Oracle 10g Express Edition. Here's my scenario, I'm at Mac OS and I have 2 Virtual machines, one for Win 7 (VS 2010 app) and another with a Parallels Virtual Appliance with Oracle 10g Express Edition 1.1. Which provider (Oledb, ODP.NET, etc..) should I use? How to make the connection to the server in C#?
