  • Move database from SQL Server 2012 to 2008

    I have a database on a SQL Sever 2012 instance which I would like to copy to a 2008 server. The 2008 server cannot restore backups created by a 2012 server (I have tried). I cannot find any options in 2012 to create a 2008 compatible backup. Am I missing something? Is there an easy way to export the schema and data to a version-agnostic format which I can then import into 2008? The database does not use any 2012 specific features. It contains tables, data and stored procedures. Here is what I have tried so far: I tried "tasks" - "generate scripts" on the 2012 server, and I was able to generate the schema (including stored procedures) as a sql script. This didn't include any of the data, though. After creating that schema on my 2008 machine, I was able to open the "Export Data" wizard on the 2012 machine, and after configuring the 2012 as source machine and the 2008 as target machine, I was presented with a list of tables which I could copy. I selected all my tables (300+), and clicked through the wizard. Unfortunately it spends ages generating its scripts, then fails with errors like "Failure inserting into the read-only column 'FOO_ID'". I also tried the "Copy Database Wizard", which claimed to be able to copy "from 2000 or later to 2005 or later". It has two modes: 1) "detach and attach", which failed with error: Message: Index was outside the bounds of the array. StackTrace: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.PropertyBag.SetValue(Int32 index, Object value) ... at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.DataFile.get_FileName() 2) SQL Management Object Method which failed with error "Cannot read property IsFileStream.This property is not available on SQL Server 7.0."

  • SQL SERVER – Online Index Rebuilding Index Improvement in SQL Server 2012

    Have you ever faced situation when you see something working and you feel it should not be working? Well, I had similar moments few days ago. I know that SQL Server 2008 supports online indexing. However, I also know that I cannot rebuild index ONLINE if I have used VARCHAR(MAX), NVARCHAR(MAX) or few other data types. While I held my belief very strongly I came across situation, where I had to go online and do little bit reading from Book Online. Here is the similar example. First of all – run following code in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2. USE TempDB GO CREATE TABLE TestTable (ID INT, FirstCol NVARCHAR(10), SecondCol NVARCHAR(MAX)) GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_TestTable] ON TestTable (ID) GO CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_TestTable_Cols] ON TestTable (FirstCol) INCLUDE (SecondCol) GO USE [tempdb] GO ALTER INDEX [IX_TestTable_Cols] ON [dbo].[TestTable] REBUILD WITH (ONLINE = ON) GO DROP TABLE TestTable GO Now run the same code in SQL Server 2012 version. Observe the difference between both of the execution. You will be get following resultset. In SQL Server 2008/R2 it will throw following error: Msg 2725, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 An online operation cannot be performed for index ‘IX_TestTable_Cols’ because the index contains column ‘SecondCol’ of data type text, ntext, image, varchar(max), nvarchar(max), varbinary(max), xml, or large CLR type. For a non-clustered index, the column could be an include column of the index. For a clustered index, the column could be any column of the table. If DROP_EXISTING is used, the column could be part of a new or old index. The operation must be performed offline. In SQL Server 2012 it will run successfully and will not throw any error. Command(s) completed successfully. I always thought it will throw an error if there is VARCHAR(MAX) or NVARCHAR(MAX) used in table schema definition. When I saw this result it was clear to me that it will be for sure not bug enhancement in SQL Server 2012. For matter for the fact, I always wanted this feature to be added in SQL Server Engine as this will enable ONLINE Index Rebuilding for mission critical tables which needs to be always online. I quickly searched online and landed on Jacob Sebastian’s blog where he has blogged about it as well. Well, is there any other new feature in SQL Server 2012 which gave you good surprise?   • Advice needed: warm backup solution for SQL Server 2008 Express?

    What are my options for achieving a warm backup server for a SQL Server Express instance running a single database? Sitting beside my production SQL Server 2008 Express box I have a second physical box currently doing nothing. I want to use this second box as a warm backup server by somehow replicating my production database in near real time (a little bit of data loss is acceptable). The database is very small and resources are utilized very lightly. In the case that the production server dies, I would manually reconfigure my application to point to the backup server instead. Although Express doesn't support log shipping natively, I am thinking that I could manually script a poor man's version of it, where I use batch files to take the logs and copy them across the network and apply them to the second server at 5 minute intervals. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is technically achievable, or if there is a better way to do what I am trying to do? Note that I want to avoid having to pay for the full version of SQL Server and configure mirroring as I think it is an overkill for this application. I understand that other DB platforms may present suitable options (eg. a MySQL Cluster), but for the purposes of this discussion, let's assume we have to stick to SQL Server.

  • XML to be validated against multiple xsd schemas

    I'm writing the xsd and the code to validate, so I have great control here. I would like to have an upload facility that adds stuff to my application based on an xml file. One part of the xml file should be validated against different schemas based on one of the values in the other part of it. Here's an example to illustrate: <foo> <name>Harold</name> <bar>Alpha</bar> <baz>Mercury</baz> <!-- ... more general info that applies to all foos ... --> <bar-config> <!-- the content here is specific to the bar named "Alpha" --> </bar-config> <baz-config> <!-- the content here is specific to the baz named "Mercury" --> </baz> </foo> In this case, there is some controlled vocabulary for the content of <bar>, and I can handle that part just fine. Then, based on the bar value, the appropriate xml schema should be used to validate the content of bar-config. Similarly for baz and baz-config. The code doing the parsing/validation is written in Java. Not sure how language-dependent the solution will be. Ideally, the solution would permit the xml author to declare the appropriate schema locations and what-not so that s/he could get the xml validated on the fly in a sufficiently smart editor. Also, the possible values for <bar> and <baz> are orthogonal, so I don't want to do this by extension for every possible bar/baz combo. What I mean is, if there are 24 possible bar values/schemas and 8 possible baz values/schemas, I want to be able to write 1 + 24 + 8 = 33 total schemas, instead of 1 * 24 * 8 = 192 total schemas. Also, I'd prefer to NOT break out the bar-config and baz-config into separate xml files if possible. I realize that might make all the problems much easier, as each xml file would have a single schema, but I'm trying to see if there is a good single-xml-file solution.

  • New set up DHCP Server on Server 2008 R2 won't work, Event-ID 1046

    I just set up a 2008 R2 as DC, and DNS. Both worked fine, DNS works fine forward and reverse lookup. Now I wanted to install DHCP. As soon as the installation of the role is finished, I get this Event-ID Error 1046: Link When I first set it up there was also a Event-ID 1059 Error: Link The dhcp server is authorized. I don't know what else I should do. Getting crazy here, hope you guys can help me.

  • Simple SQL Server 2005 Replication - "D-1" server used for heavy queries/reports

    Hello. We have two SQL 2005 machines. One is used for production data, and the other is used for running queries/reports. Every night, the production machine dumps (backups) it's database to disk, and the other one restores it. This is called the D-1 process. I think there must be a more efficient way of doing this, since SQL 2005 has many forms of replication. Some requirements: 1) No need for instant replication, there can be (some) delay 2) All changes (including schemas, data, constraints, indexes) need to be replicated without manual intervention 3) It is used for a single database only 4) There is a third server available if needed 5) There is high bandwidth (gigabit ethernet) available between the servers 6) There isn't a shared storage (SAN) available What would be a good alternative to this daily backup/restore routine?   • Fast search in XMl files in .NET (or How to index XML files)

    I have to implement a search feature which is able to quickly perform arbitrary complex queries to XML-data. If the user makes a query, all XML files must be searched to find possible matches. The users will have lots of XML-Files (a few 10000 or more) which are typically a few kilobytes in size. All the XML-files have almost the same structure. I already benchmarked XPath, it is too slow for my needs. How can it be done most efficiently? Is is possible to create indexes for the contents of the XML files (preserving content semantics, not just plain fulltext search)? Will it be useful to put the XML data into an (embedded) SQL database and do the queries with SQL? What other possibilities do I have?

I use now an app that remembers their position to restore it... Windows Update service dissapeared, along with BITS service, I managed to recover them and installed all updates availables today I'm going nuts looking for information about these errors. Solutions that didn't work: sfc /scannow Doesn't complain about anything All windows updates applied (after recovering missing Windows Update) ServerManager.log: Only one error all the time: Error (Id=0) System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800706D9): No hay más extremos disponibles desde el asignador de extremos.       @Thanks Jeffrey Stephenson If you are looking at using any one of the new XML Based languages, lets say a docbook xml, or xproc, or what not, you can make use of JDeveloper's syntax highlighting and completion insight feature to ease out those extra keystrokes. All you need is a URL/local copy of the XML Schema for the language. Once you have, you can register it via Tools --> Preferences --> XML Schemas.   Remember to provide a new extension name [Using a default .xml extension did not work for me.] I provided my own extension .dbk for my docbook files. Once you save these settings, you can create new files that conform to the schema, and you get validation/completion insight/prompting for free.

    Can someone give me a use case for setting up a Windows Server 2008 Task Scheduler task (we'll call this "test") that completes (action completed is task=201) with an error (result code=2)? This is event trigger code for another task (called "notification" that sends out an email based on the event history of the "test" task. I've got use cases for tasks that opens a program successfully and when a program fails to find the program.   • OpenVPN, Server 12.04, connect to machines in home LAN behind VPN server

    Problem: I've set up a working OpenVPN server, and am able to connect to it from anywhere using my mac laptop and tunnelblick. When I connect in, I'm assigned an IP address of 10.8.0.x, the server is 10.8.0.1, so I have no problems SSHing into it. Once SSHd in, I can even ping other machines (obviously) on my home network (192.168.1.x). Desired outcome: What I want, is, to connect to the VPN server, and instead of getting a 10.8.0.x address, I get a 192.168.1.x on my home network. I can't figure out how to talk to the OTHER machines on my home network WITHOUT being SSHd in to the VPN server. I'd like to just connect to my VPN server, then be a part of my home network. Attempted solutions: I've read that I need to set up routes, and/or enable IP forwarding. I enabled IP forwarding using sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 and that doesn't seem to have done anything. I've also uncommented a line in the OpenVPN's server.conf file: # Push routes to the client to allow it # to reach other private subnets behind # the server. Remember that these # private subnets will also need # to know to route the OpenVPN client # address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) # back to the OpenVPN server. push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0" ;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" But still no luck, I still get a 10.8.0.x address... I've also read I may have to add routes to the router itself, but haven't tried that. Any help appreciated, thanks!
