• Can a Barracuda Spam Filter 300 reject mail based on DNS?

  Can a Barracuda SF 300 reject mail based on DNS? Specifically can it respond with a 4XX code for mail claiming to be from a domain without a valid MX or A record (similar to postfix's smtpd_sender_restrictions = reject_unknown_sender_domain). If so, how do I set it? (I realize it's probably something simple I've overlooked.) The barracuda can resolve using its configured name servers. The name servers can correctly resolve external domains.

• On a router, how do I block wan access for a particular machine without blocking its access to the local network?

  On my tp-link TL-WR1043ND router I want to prevent a particular machine from having access to the WAN while still allowing that machine to access other machines on the LAN. My assumption is that I need to do something in the "Access Control" section, however the problem is that it wants an ip range or domain name for the target of the rule. The router uses DHCP to get an address from the WAN, so I don't have any guarantee what the ip address of the wan will be. If the answer is that it's not possible with this router, could someone describe how to do it using OpenWRT instead?

• How do you prevent spam being sent by your users?

  So, for the third time in about two weeks (maybe less), one of our customers has had their password compromised, and a spammer was sending mail with their account using our webmail. As a result, our outgoing mail server has been listed at Spamhaus, and a lot of our outgoing mail is being rejected. I can't think of any way to prevent this from happening (although now our webmail server is using Sendmail instead of SMTP, but that just limits the scope of the problem), yet the big ISPs never seem to have a problem like this.

  We manage a server that is hosted on Amazon EC2, which has web applications that need to be able to send outgoing email. Recently we received a notice from Amazon about possible email abuse on that server, so i've been looking into it. It's Windows Server Datacenter (2003, i guess), and uses SMTP Virtual Server (you know, the one that requires IIS 6 for admin).   Hey guys, I am puzzled as to how my email can get compromised. As an example, (DON'T click on this address if you are not sure if you are safe: katikaj2Bennetth74.spaces.live.com), that's the only link sent using my account, and it seems that the username is randomly generated. After clicking into it on my linux machine, it seems that the only post is a viagra ad. I have never clicked into any of the links sent by any of my contacts. Anyone know what could be causing this? • Bad Bot blocking Revisited

  I've read a lot about bad bot blocking, php scripts, .htaccess techniques, etc... Is this a valid method? Since .htacces can rewrite and send a bad bot a 403 deny or forward to something like spam poison, is it possible to Disallow a folder, then through .htaccess in that specific folder redirect to spampoison? Since Apache reads each .htaccess independently and follows specific instructions, then a bad bot not following robots.txt would just be redirected. Or anyone trying to access, /badbot/ or whatever I choose to call my trap folder. Thanks Tom

• UFW firewall still blocking SMB despite adding rules

  I have an Ubuntu PC with ufw firewall (GUI version). I have added the preset Samba service, in and out, and even tried adding the ports manually (135-139, 445, UDP and TCP, in and out), but it still blocks samba. I am trying to access a share on another PC on my LAN. If I disable ufw, it works fine. It must be still blocking something and I can't figure it out. Any ideas? I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2.

• How to avoid Hotmail/Live rejections for (legit) large volume eMailing?

  While qualifying eMail for Spam, Hotmail/Live checks the historical records of numbers of eMails sent by a sender (FROM, eMail Server, IP, etc.). Some times, perfectly valid bulk eMails that are not Spam, (i.e. double opt-in list, from a server with proper SPF Record, signed with DKIM, unregister links and contact info, etc.) are rejected and not delivered to destinataries. Not even to their Junk folder. I guess we can avoid this situation by progressivelly "training" Hotmail/Live about the reputation of our sender and sending small quantyties of eMails innitially and increasing the quantity for some amount/percentaje during each delivery. Are there guidelines or do you have any experience on these quantities, strategy, solutions? Thank you in advance. • Website address hacked, emails created but not showing in manage your account

  I have a website, thebleudoor.com. It is hosted by yahoo. It gets 2000-3000 hits a day and has been for at least 5 years. A few months ago, as admin of the website, I started getting bounced back emails from newly created emails like [email protected]. Yahoo only shows 2 emails for my account. They said they can't do anything about it. Now, my "spam hacked email accounts" are getting spam. They haven't altered or used my website or email or bank info, just the good name of my website. Is there anything I can do? Do I need to be concerned? Changing my provider won't really help will it? Thank you.

• UFW blocking random packets on 443

  All, I have UFW setup to allow traffic on port 443. It works as expected, though I have a large amount of UFW Block log entries. To Action From -- ------ ---- 80 ALLOW Anywhere 443 ALLOW Anywhere 22222 ALLOW Anywhere 80 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 443 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22222 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) However in my syslog file I see this: [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=XXX SRC=<foreignip> DST=<serverip> LEN=40 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=116 ID=22025 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=49622 DPT=443 WINDOW=0 RES=0x00 ACK RST URGP=0 About 30 or so seconds later pound (which I'm using for SSL decryption and port redirection) throws a connection timed out messsage. I'm assuming this is because UFW is blocking the packet. I'm at a loss as to an explination. Could the packet be malformed or something, is this normal? Edit - I have since changed the /etc/defaults/ufw and set ipv6=no, so the v6 rules are no longer in the mix. The server is still showing the block / connection timed out behavior though. Everything was going fine up until a week ago when all of a sudden all emails starting either going to spam boxes or not being sent at all. My setup: DNS - done (A records PTR are ok) Mail Setup - done Webmail - done Also there seems to be a naming problem. They all come from [email protected] instead of [email protected]. I must be missing an alias somewhere. I've read an entire book on setting this up so don't throw stones :) The GUI is masking a lot of this up for me, so explanations via GUI is appreciated.

• SQL SERVER – Simple Example of Snapshot Isolation – Reduce the Blocking Transactions

  To learn any technology and move to a more advanced level, it is very important to understand the fundamentals of the subject first. Today, we will be talking about something which has been quite introduced a long time ago but not properly explored when it comes to the isolation level. Snapshot Isolation was introduced in SQL Server in 2005. However, the reality is that there are still many software shops which are using the SQL Server 2000, and therefore cannot be able to maintain the Snapshot Isolation. Many software shops have upgraded to the later version of the SQL Server, but their respective developers have not spend enough time to upgrade themselves with the latest technology. “It works!” is a very common answer of many when they are asked about utilizing the new technology, instead of backward compatibility commands. In one of the recent consultation project, I had same experience when developers have “heard about it” but have no idea about snapshot isolation. They were thinking it is the same as Snapshot Replication – which is plain wrong. This is the same demo I am including here which I have created for them. In Snapshot Isolation, the updated row versions for each transaction are maintained in TempDB. Once a transaction has begun, it ignores all the newer rows inserted or updated in the table. Let us examine this example which shows the simple demonstration. This transaction works on optimistic concurrency model. Since reading a certain transaction does not block writing transaction, it also does not block the reading transaction, which reduced the blocking. First, enable database to work with Snapshot Isolation. Additionally, check the existing values in the table from HumanResources.Shift. ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ON GO SELECT ModifiedDate FROM HumanResources.Shift GO Now, we will need two different sessions to prove this example. First Session: Set Transaction level isolation to snapshot and begin the transaction. Update the column “ModifiedDate” to today’s date. -- Session 1 SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SNAPSHOT BEGIN TRAN UPDATE HumanResources.Shift SET ModifiedDate = GETDATE() GO Please note that we have not yet been committed to the transaction. Now, open the second session and run the following “SELECT” statement. Then, check the values of the table. Please pay attention on setting the Isolation level for the second one as “Snapshot” at the same time when we already start the transaction using BEGIN TRAN. -- Session 2 SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SNAPSHOT BEGIN TRAN SELECT ModifiedDate FROM HumanResources.Shift GO You will notice that the values in the table are still original values. They have not been modified yet. Once again, go back to session 1 and begin the transaction. -- Session 1 COMMIT After that, go back to Session 2 and see the values of the table. -- Session 2 SELECT ModifiedDate FROM HumanResources.Shift GO You will notice that the values are yet not changed and they are still the same old values which were there right in the beginning of the session. Now, let us commit the transaction in the session 2. • website attack form submission triggering emails related questions

  We are experiencing website attacks that trigger the submission of a form, and send alert emails. Normal process of form submission is to fill up a couple of text fields, and when the user is redirected, the next page processes $_POST. If $_POST exists, then the email to intended form recipients is triggered. What is happening right now, we are receiving the email of the form submission, three emails at a time with same information. The information per email is the same, but not all of the spam emails contain the same information, each batch of triggered emails has unique information. The form has no captcha, and if possible we would like to keep it this way. The website has worked fine and had no spamming problems until today. We have monitoring software for the website, but whoever is submitting this form over and over is not being recorded by the tracking software WHY IS THIS? IS THE PERSON ACTUALLY VISITING THE WEBSITE? The only suspicious visit tracked was on November 10th, and this record ALSO shows three forms submitted (this is how I identified possible first visit by attacker). Then no incidents until today. WHAT IS THE GOAL of the spam attack? Is the attacker expecting us to respond to the bogus emails? What can they achieve with repeated submission of form Why are three emails triggered in the row? Is this indicative that they may be using a script? This is a PHP website. Is there a way for a client to view the PHP code of a page? Thank you

  Hi, I received this spam in my catch-all. As a webmaster of the domain it was sent to, I am really curious what the reason for this mail is. It was sent to a non-existent user "tania" on my domain - here I used mydomain.zzz - what do the sender want to achieve? Since many mail servers have stopped backscattering, not getting a bounce would not mean anything, would it? And if this is off topic, where inb the StackExchange WOULD it be on topic? • Sending SPAM free mail through my website

  Hi, I've been battling with this issue for couple of months. I need to send bulk mail (not spam) through my social network to users in situations like newsletters, site invitations (when user imports their address book contacts) I'm using shared hosting and it limits 500 mails per hour. Even though i manage to send mails most of them end up in user's spam box. After researching these are the solutions that i finally came up with. 1) Use Google Apps SMTP (http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/features.html) 2) Move into VPS 3) Use shared hosting with throttle enabled Please advise me on what to choose. Will using Google Apps prevent mail being sent as spam? I can't use other 3rd party SMTP like iContact or Aweber as "invitation sending script" will send emails to thousands of contacts, depending on user's addressbook. Thanks in advance

• Can Tornado communicate with Cassandra, in Non-blocking asynchronous style?

  I'm working on a web project, which have to process so many client requests. So I am considering to use Cassandra and tornado. Tornado seems to have a build-in client(tornado.httpclient.AsyncHTTPClient), which can do http Non-Blocking request. But, Cassandra uses Thrift protocol. Using Thrift, Tornado seems to be blocked while quering to Cassandra. Has anyone got expereince? Please suggest how should I do. Or, is there any add-on module for this purpose? Thanks.
