• PPTP: Linux clients unreachable

  I have setup a PPTP server on a CentOS 6 box. Several clients (Windows and Linux) connect to this server. All clients use the same subnet. All clients (Win or Lin) can surf the Internet using the VPN successfully. Windows clients can ping any other Windows client (XP/Vista/7) connected to VPN. Linux clients (KVPNC) can ping any Windows client (XP/Vista/7) connected to VPN. So far so good. But there's this weird problem and I've been trying to figure it out with no luck: No client can ping (reach) a Linux client (successfully) connected to VPN. And yes, the firewall is completely disabled. I'd really appreciate any hint/idea. TIA, EDIT: The ultimate goal of this is to share services across the VPN, like accessing a HTTPD running on a Linux box from a Windows client.

• Outlook Replies with Inline Comments

  I have a user who uses Word as his e-mail editor. Often when replying to an e-mail, he'll insert his comments into the body of the original e-mail. Since he is using Word as the editor, these show as [User Name] Comment Text in a contrasting color. However, some users see the comments in their Outlook, and others do not. I've tried Selecting/DeSelecting Word as the e-mail editor on the recipients, and it does not seem to make a difference. We are using Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 clients along with a few Entourage Clients. There does not seem to be a pattern related to which client is used, but Entourage seems to be more likely to have the problem. TIA, Bill

• How can I use a Windows 2003 server as a HTTP proxy?

  I'd like to set up an HTTP proxy on a windows 2003 server so that I can access blocked websites such as YouTube from behind a corporate firewall (DAMN THE MAN!). I've never done this before, so I'm not even sure if the picture I have in my head is valid or possible. So I'm stuck behind a firewall that blocks sites that I need to access occasionally but that are blocked because of abuse by slackers. I've got a Windows 2003 server hosted out on the internet (i.e., outside of this odious firewall). I know I can configure my browser to use a proxy for my HTTP traffic, so why not use my server? What I'd like to know is: Is my concept valid? Can this be done, and will it work? How do I configure my server to act as a proxy? What applications may I have to install? Free is fine but don't leave out commercial software TIA

  Does anyone know of a good and economic svn + trac hosting site. Specific requirements 1) trac hooks should be in place, which enables commmit messages to be updated in trac issues. 2) It should have emailTotracScript or MailToTracPlugin installed, with which an issue can be reported via email. If its located in Asia pacific it would be great, as time delay from the US is very high. I am already using sourcerepo.com and its very good. Only short coming is they dont have emailtotrac and the time delay is significant. any other inputs would be helpful. TIA

• Hyper-V stuck restoring VM

  I have a hyper-v server that runs 5 virtual machines. I believe the physical box rebooted last night which is usually not a problem but this morning one of the virual machines is stuck at "restoring 0%". I have rebooted the physical machine and same thing, 4 virtual machines come up fine the 5th gets stuck at "restoring 0%". I right-clicked the VM in hyper-v manager and selected "Cancel restore" and nothing happens. I was able to copy the VHD to another hyper-v box and light it up there so I know the VHD is good. Any ideas on what to look at next? If I can I would like to just dump the saved state and move on, or if there is a better way to handle it I'm all ears. TIA!!

• How to add a second domain to an EC2 instance with Elastic & Route 53

  I've got my domain site.com running on EC2, using Elastic IP and Route 53. I want to park site.net so that it resolves to the same site.. I've looked up Migrating an Existing Domain to Route 53 in the docs, but can't find mention of how to add a second domain! I figured I'd have to create an A record, but when I do so, the record is created site.net.site.com .. not quite what I'm after! I've also done searches for mixes of 'route 53', 'park domain', 'addon domain', 'second domain', but no dice... My prior experience is with cPanel and Plesk, so I'm a bit lost! Any pointers would be appreciated! TIA

• Install Ubuntu side by side with Windows

  I'm trying to setup both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop on the same machine. I've partitioned the disk into 3 parts, so that I can have Windows Ubuntu Shared Partition for Files I've installed Windows 7 on the first partition (which created a small partition of 100MB for boot), so now I have 4 partitions on the disk which is all it can take. Now I am installing Ubuntu, and it's asking me whether I want to: Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7 Replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu (No!) Something else I want the Ubuntu installation to go into the partition that I prepared for it. Should I choose "Something else"? If I do so -- will I be able to choose which OS to load at boot? Can anyone explain how "Ubuntu inside Windows" work? it says that it will allow me to choose which OS to load at boot, which is desired. UPDATE: When choosing "Something else" I see also an option for Device for Boot Loader Installation: /dev/sda -- the ssd disk itself /dev/sda1 -- the Windows 7 loader (100MB partition) /dev/sda4 -- which is one of the other partitions Which one should I choose there? My requirements are: should be accessible via a browser should be open source must be installable (dropbox is a no-go) must have an option to put a access time limit on a file must perform garbage collection automatically after a file expires must be able to mark files as public or private an option to protect a file via a pin-code for users without accounts in the system would be nice to have The problem is I don't even know what to search for - all my googling results in either complete groupware solutions or p2p file sharing software. If such a thing doesn't exist, please don't hestitate to say so, so I can crawl to a corner and cry myself to sleep. TIA

  Hi, Currently I can access specific site in two ways: 1. http://a.com/foo/bar 2. http://a.com/index.php?url=foo/bar What I'm trying to achive is to allow to do it only using first way, and make redirect 301 on the second to the first one. • Firefox Wordwrap

  The text displayed in several, forum sites that I frequently visit does not automatically word wrap in Firefox's window. Rather, it just "runs off" the right end of the window. I can cause the text to properly word-wrap by maximizing the window and then immediately returning it to its normal size. This lasts until I move to another page and then I have to repeat this "work-around" to display word-wrapped text properly again. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to make Firefox always automatically word-wrap text? TIA. Bill

  Currently running on a 16GB system - Ubuntu 64 bit. INnodb Buffer Pool is set to 10GB. tuning-primer shows the following: QUERY CACHE Query cache is enabled Current query_cache_size = 512 M Current query_cache_used = 501 M Current query_cache_limit = 4 M Current Query cache Memory fill ratio = 97.87 % Current query_cache_min_res_unit = 4 K However, 9418108 queries have been removed from the query cache due to lack of memory Perhaps you should raise query_cache_size That is over 9million queries removed. System uptime is 8 days. Should I remove the Query Cache altogether? Our db is always under heavy I/O. tia

• View Security Server and Direct Connection

  I have a Security Server for my connections from the Internet. This works fine, accept when I enable "Direct Connection to the desktop". I found the following statement on this: If you bypass the secure connection, the client must establish a direct RDP communication to the desktop virtual machine over RDP (port 3389). Does this mean I have to open 3389 (RDP) to the Internet if I want to use Direct Connections? If I disable Direct Connections to get my Security Server working, I have to disable it on my Connection Server. It's my understanding that this means that if I reboot my Connection Server, all the View clients get disconnected. Is there a way I can disable "Direct Connections" for the Security Server, while enabling it for access from the LAN? Tia.

  On my Laptop I have somehow lost the shift+< and shift+ key combinations. Setup: Ubuntu 12.10 OS Windows 7 running in Virtual box Synergyc running on the Linux Host Connected to Synergys running on my desktop machine, also running Ubuntu 12.10 Info The key mappings are fine in Linux. This has happened following an install of vsvim inside of Visual Studio 2012. Now globally inside this particular Virtual Box instance I can no longer use shift+< and shift+ Funnily enough when I go to the VS Key mapping finder it shows me that: Shift+< mapped to Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Z Shift+ mapped to Ctrl+Shift+Alt+X I have asked in super user as this is also affecting the windows environment. • Locale setting on a Red Hat box

  Hi all, Recently our organization got a couple of server boxes which are I guess present in some data-center in UK. The problem is that for some reason the default Locale representation in Java on that server returns en_US instead of the expected en_GB (I confirmed this by running a code on that server which simply outputs Locale.default()). I am pretty sure this has got something to do the way in which the boxes were set up. My question is: what would be the approach to fix this issue now that the OS has been installed? Is there any way I can for a given SSH session set the locale as en_GB instead of the current en_US? TIA, sasuke

• Restore Point area getting deleted

  Hi, I'm running a multi-boot scenario (which I have been successfully on a number of machines for a number of years). I have Windows 7 (32 bit) on one partition and Windows 7 (64 bit) on another and a common data partition (which happens to store the user hives for each OS instance). For some reason, on one particular machine (a HP Pavilion notebook) the restore points get trashed after a reboot. I can create them (both manually and automatically), but after some (but not all) reboots the restore points get trashed. I have all three partitions set (on both OSs) to hold restore information. This setup has worked successfully on other machines for at least 12 months. I'm out of ideas... I DO need the restore points as I do "bleeding edge" stuff and they've saved my bacon on other machines in the past... TIA, Paolo

• Windows Internet Connection sharing with Mobile Broadband

  Due to circumstances, I have only got mobile broadband where I am living. I have a small network with a ADSL Router (but which isn't connected to the Internet. I want to use ICS to allow one machine (with the MBB modem) to act as the Internet interface and allow other machines connected to the ADSL router (including a new Android tablet by WiFi) to use the single mobile broadband connection. I've a feeling that my configuration is not valid - as it stands, but I'm not sure. Can some kind soul lead me "by the nose" to getting this working? • aptana/eclipse blocks other apps

  Hi, I've got a fresh win7 installation, the only apps installed so far are aptana (beta 3)/eclipse and firefox + chrome (except antivirus and drivers) Every time I start aptana, chrome and firefox are blocked, so firefox can't load a webpage (or sometimes takes veeeery long) and chrome doesn't even take care of events (so for example hovering over a link doesn't change the cursor and a click does...nothing or typing in an url, press enter - nothing happens) First I thought, aptana downloads something and blocks my internet connection... but IE works well and also there are no signs in the taskmanager (cpu%, network or memory) When I close Aptana, all works as before. I tried updating Java, which didn't help... On my office-computer I use the same apps and it works perfect. Got any ideas? TIA, waquner

  I have Solaris 10 and 11 running on my system. I want to update all of them to newest patch. I don't have license or support plan for Solaris yet (the OS is pre-installed on my server). On Solaris 11 I heard I need a support license and a cert to connect to Oracle software repository. What about Solaris 10? Can I fetch patch bundle and install it without connect to Oracle (for both Solaris 10 and 11)? TIA.

• Laptop forgets second monitor when it goes to sleep

  I recently updated my nvidia driver... now I have to re-establish the connection to my second monitor everytime the laptop goes to sleep. When I open the NVIDIA control panel, the second monitor is listed there but the checkbox beside it has been cleared. Oddly my laptop screen is identified as display #3 and the external screen as display #4. Is there a registry key that I can clear to get them set back to #1 & #2? Will that fix the problem? Or is there a simpler solution. (It's a Dell Studio XPS laptop with GeForce 9500M running Windows Vista 64-bit) TIA Al

• Best Linux Distro for web services (Nginx & node.js) on laptop: Compaq 6710b?

  I haven't used Linux in 5+ years, aside from d/l occasional system recovery CDs off DistroWatch, so I don't know the current landscape. Related postings on this forum are several years old & may not relate to my hardware (Compaq 6710b laptop, Core2Duo Centrino). Requirements: Use the Compaq 6710b laptop's WiFi out of the box enough frequently updated pre-made packages for web hosting & development (Nginx & node.js are biggest concerns, everyone has Apache & PHP, & I'm not crazy about building from source) prefer be easy enough to use, but outside help available (so a small user-base distro is only OK if the community is active & a major disto's packages are compatable) configuration easy to transfer to outside web hosts. You have actually installed/used recommended disto (don't have to be expert) TIA!

• Using cssh with an ssh clone

  Just had a quick question about using ClusterSSH(cssh) with a homegrown ssh-like/ssh-clone application which we use internally to connect to remote machines. I tried using the ssh = /path/to/ssh_clone override in $HOME/.csshrc or /etc/csshrc (or even passing it via -C). Unfortunately running cssh with debug shows that it is still trying to connect to the remote machines as ssh -l user machine_ip instead of ssh_clone -l user machine_ip. Any thoughts/suggestions on how to work around this would be greatly appreciated. TIA. Edit: Version info $ cssh -v Version: 4.01_02

  Hey guys I use Clear internet ie wireless to get my connection. I play a game online Eve Online which has had on and off CTD(crash to desktop) due to the connection timing out. Usually I have trouble only late at night after work but today I had no connection at 4 pm. They ran a trace route and Im using Ping plotter to do a trace in real time. I have 100% packet loss at hop 2 and Im getting varible loss at hop 6 at ae-72-70.ebr2.Dallas1.Level3.net Also had windows send a dump to Microsoft mentioning the eve file has a problem requiring it to close. Any thoughts ? TIA!

• iPhone SDK: subFolders inside the main bundle

  Hi, in the current project I have a number of folders, with subfolders, and these contain images: 01.png, 02.png. Folder1/FolderA/f1.png Folder1/FolderB/F1.png When I compile the app, I looked inside the the .app and noticed that all the images are placed in the top level, with no sub-folders. So clearly when trying to load the image this doesn't work: NSString *filePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"f1" ofType:@"png" inDirectory:@"Folder1/FolderA"]; But even more strangely, when loading image "f1", the image actually loads "F1" UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"f1.png"]]; Anyone have ideas on how to get around this problem? Is there a compile option to create the folders in the app bundle? TIA.
