• Silverlight 4 application on localhost runs extremely slow

  Silverlight 4 app running in IE8 and hosted on VS2010 internal webserver. The website takes atleast a minute to download the xap and code runs slow on client (IE8). I am running the app in debug mode and have turned intellitrace off. Symbol loading is also turned off. However if I kill the VS webserver, clean the solution, the app runs fast. 3 debugging sessions later, the app slows to a crawl. Have also tried turning off McAfee live scanning but no use. Looked in event log for any clue but found none. What could be the cause of the slowness? TIA rams

• Wrong SQLServer syntax: need help!

  Hi, this is what I want to achieve: 4 tables are involved: Players with PlayerID as PK, Competitions with CompetID as PK Results with ResultID as PK and CompetID as FK And the 4th table: PlayerResultts with ResultID + PlayerID as PK and CompetID as new column I created. Competitions, results and PlayerResults are already populated and quite large (300000 PlayerResults so far). In order to populate the PlayerResults.CompetID column, I try a Update ... (Select....) request but I'm not aware of the right syntax and it fails. Here is my feeble attempt: update PlayerResults set competid = (select distinct(r.competid) from results r, playerresults p where r.resultID = p.resultid) Error is (of course): "Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , , = or when the subquery is used as an expression." Can someone put me in the right direction? TIA

• Include a unique URL in EXE

  Hi :) I want to give users of my site the ability to upload their software/hardware configuration automatically on Windows. So I'm thinking of having an EXE file download, and somehow put in that EXE a unique URL for each user. When the data is collected, the program would just posts some JSON to that URL. How can I do it? I'm most familiar with .NET platform. Tools like this do exist, for example Blizzard uses this approach for their beta test enroll. Each user downloads a slightly different EXE. TIA

• Date range/query problem..

  Am hoping someone can help me out a bit with date ranges... I have a table with 3 fields id, datestart, dateend I need to query this to find out if a pair of dates from a form are conflicting i.e table entry 1, 2010-12-01, 2010-12-09 from the form 2010-12-08, 20-12-15 select id from date_table where '2010-12-02' between datestart and dateend; That returns me the id that I want, but what I would like to do is to take the date range from the form and do a query similar to what I have got that will take both form dates 2010-12-08, 20-12-15 and query the db to ensure that there is no conflicting date ranges in the table. Am sat scratching my head with the problem... TIA

  Hi, I am new to glassfish server. i have a question on glassfish usage: can I just use glassfish like a tomcat server without needing an installation? where in, I just take a folder containing glassfish folders, jars etc... dump it in a folder location setup a few environment variables and it runs.. just like tomcat? is it possible with glassfish? also does glassfish installation does any other background things like creating registry entries etc other than creating the glassfish folder structure? • Truncate text if it atempts to run into three lines

  I have a small about 140px wide aligned next to a picture. In total there is space for four lines of text. The first two lines are reserved for the title and there are two lines of other info. I want the title to be cut if it spans more than two lines else it will push the other info out of line with the bottom of the image. The only solution I could think of was to create a div the height of two lines with an overflow to hidden. However, if the title is only one line it leaves a big gap. The solution can be Jquery, plain javascript, CSS or even PHP (if its possible). TIA

  I have a div called "appHeader"... and the content of it is subject to change dynamically. I'd like some static text at the top of that div that is highlighted ... and have this done in css. The text is going to say something like "Property of such and such... etc" but it is static. Can you create static content within CSS? Is this possible? TIA, Kirby p.s.   I am attempting to use a Canvas to create a simple Cad application. I have been able to get lines to draw as I want. For now the only other thing I need is text. The user should be able to edit the text in place. ?Is one of these better to use for this over the others? Rich Text TextBlock TextBox Label A more important question, though, is once I have chosen which class to use for implementation, how do I set and get the text value in code? Since the app is in essence a cad application, text will be added, deleted, and altered often, so I am not attempting to put these in XAML, but code-behind. That is why I am asking about how to do this in code. If the answer is "use X.SetValue()" (or that family of methods), then please tell me what I am supposed to do with the required DependencyProperty reference? TIA. Paul

• vb.net add text to form without interaction

  I have a winform project which lists all the files in a specified folder. It allows the user to select a new destination for each file, and when the user has chosen the destinations for all files that he would like to be moved, it moves the files, one by one. My next step is, I need to display a confirm form when the files are being moved, and add each file's name and destination to the confirm form as it is being moved. My question is: How can I add more text to the confirm form's controls after I already loaded it (using confirm.showdialog() from my other form, without any user interaction? I imagine that I need to do it from the original form, because it needs to display each one when it starts to move that file, but I'm open to any suggestions:) TIA

• Multiple Table Joins to Improve Performance?

  If I have a table structure like this: Transaction [TransID, ...] Document [DocID, TransID, ...] Signer [SignerID, ...] Signature [SigID, DocID, SignerID, ...] And the business logic is like this: Transactions can have multiple documents Documents can have multiple signatures And the same signer can have multiple signatures in multiple documents within the same transaction So, now to my actual question: If I wanted to find all the documents in a particular transaction, would it be better, performance-wise, if I also stored the TransID and the DocID in the Signer table as well so I have smaller joins. Otherwise, I'd have to join through the Signature Document Transaction Documents to get all the documents in the transaction for that signer. I think it's really messy to have that many relationships in the Signer table though and it doesn't seem "correct" to do it that way (also seems like an update nightmare) but I can see that it might be better performance for direct joins. Thoughts? TIA!

  First, I am SO sorry if the answer is out there. I've looked and looked and feel this is such a simple thing that it should be obvious. I'm wanting to make sure only the person who added an event can modify it. Simple! I already have a datasource that has event_added_by as a data point. It is populating a FormView. SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [tbl_events] WHERE ([event_ID] = @event_ID)" And I have Page.User.Identity.Name. How do I compare the two? • what does < < mean in the shell

  when looping recursively through folders with files containing spaces the shell script I use is of this form, copied from the internet: while IFS= read -r -d $'\0' file; do dosomethingwith "$file" # do something with each file done < <(find /bar -name *foo* -print0) I think I understand he IFS bit, but I don't understand what the < < characters mean. Obviously there's some sort of piping going on here.. It's very hard to google "< <", you see. TIA -stib

• Sending out 20,000+ emails with asp.net

  I am writing an application that will need to send a massive amount of emails to our students who will be selected from our database (each email will be personalized to the extent that will include their name, course of study etc...so needs to be sent one at a time). I could do this looping over an SmtpClient, but I'm afraid that with the numbers I'm trying to send, I'll ultimately run into timeout issues or my thread being killed because of lack of machine resources. At this point I'm just looking for suggestions of a better way to handle this, or if looping over SmtpClient is an ok solution, how I should go about handling it to prevent what I posted above. Would a web service be a better alternative? Please advise, TIA

Java allows to do something like that by calling BufferedReader.ready(), this way I can implement console input something like this: while (on && in.ready()) { line = in.readLine(); /* do something with line */ if (!in.ready()) Thread.sleep(100); } this allows an external thread to gracefully shutdown the input loop by setting on to false; I'd like to perform a similar implementation in C without resorting to non portable tricks, I already know I can make a "timed out fgets" under unix by resorting to signals or (better, even though requering to take care of buffering) reimplement it on top of recv/select, but I'd prefer something that would work on windows too.   Hi, I have a variable, $var, that contains a string of characters, this is a dynamic variable that contains the values from inputs. $var could be 'abc', or $var could be 'blu', I want to match the string inside variable against an array, and return all the matches. $array = array("blue", "red", "green"); What is the correct syntax for writing the code in php, my rough code is below $match = preg_grep($var, $array); (incorrect syntax of course) I tried to put quotes and escape slashes, but so far no luck.   For our .net 3.5 web project, what are the files which needs to be included under VSS 6.0? We have a distributed team of three vendors working on separate modules of our .net portal and all of them maintain their own setup and during release they send across the final build. No surprises that this has caused much headache and we have decided that we will keep this environment under our control and checkout the files when required. This is a multi-part questionnaire and to clear some basics first, we would like to know which are the important files to be kept under VSS6.0. Yes we know VSS 6.0 is outdated but we are playing a catchup game and till we move either to TFS or Subversion( atleast six months down the line) we need a VSS strategy. TIA

  Hello, I'm developing an project, which consists in a webservice and a client application. It's a fair simple scenario. The webservice is connected to a database server, and the client consumes from the webserver in order to get information retrieved from the database. The thing is: 1. The client application can only display data after a previous authentication; 2. All the data transferred between Web Service and clients must be confidential; 3. Data integrity shouldn’t be compromised; I'm wondering what is the best way to achieve these requirements. The first thing I thought about, was sending the server a digital signature containing a client certificate, to be stored in the server, and used as comparison for authentication. But I investigated a little about webservice security, and I'm no longer certain that this is the best option. Can anyone give me an opinion about this? TIA
