  • How to load the environment variables at boot time before X11 on Ubuntu Precise?

    Using Ubuntu Precise 64 bit, I'm facing a problem that I'm unable to solve and that I'll try to describe below: I'm using a console mode program (let's say abc) that uses Go, NodeJS, Java and Scala. In order for abc to work with these languages, I've to declare the following statements: a) within /etc/environment: PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/local/go/bin" CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr/share/java/scala-library.jar b) within /etc/login.defs ENV_SUPATH PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/local/go/bin ENV_PATH PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/local/go/bin c) a) within /etc/sudoers: `# env_reset Defaults secure_path="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/local/go/bin"` Then, when I start abc from a terminal, all is fine and I can use any of the 4 languages described above. However, if I put a script within /etc/init.d that starts abc during the boot process (i.e. before to start the GUI), using Java from abc still is fine, but using Go, NodeJS or Scala doesn't work anymore. Then, I guess that during the boot process, the script within /etc/init.d that starts abc is executed before that the different environment variables set within /etc/sudoers, /etc/environment and /etc/login.defs are loaded. So, my question is: how to force the environment variables to be loaded before that my script starting abc is launched? Any help and advice on this topic would be trully appreciated. TIA. Cheers.   • Cannot log to Proxmox GUI

    I'm running proxmox on debian 6.0.8 kernel 2.6.32-18-pve. When I try to log into the GUI with the root password, it lets me in for about 2 seconds then asks for the password again: <hostname>:8006/api2/json/cluster/resources 401 (permission denied - invalid ticket) This is not the same behavior as when I give an incorrect password. I suspect a hostname problem, but I can't sort it out. My /etc/hosts contains the following line: <ip> <shorthostname> <longhostname> pvelocalhost The folder /etc/pve/nodes contains a folder name The https certificates matches the hostname. Any idea? I need to verify the following parameter settings: core file size (blocks, -c) unlimited data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited open files (-n) 65536 stack size (kbytes, -s) unlimited cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited Sure I could use ulimit -cH to get display above. But I also need to find where those settings are. I'm from Linux, in Linux we have /etc/security/limts.conf file to hold alike information. Do we have such file in Solaris? TIA!

VMWare vSphere sounds great but because of low budget I can't afford for both licenses and SANs. Without SAN, is vSphere worth the price? As I know without SAN, the VMWare HA, VMontion, FT is unavailable. So, do I need vSphere or only ESXi free version assume that I only need backup vm daily?   • Remote Control software for Mac

    One of the things I like about Microsoft's RDC Client is that the resolution of the experience is set by the client and not, say, a physical monitor connected to the host, as is the case with VNC; the latter being the protocol used by Mac. This means that even though I'm connecting to a notebook with a 1280x800 physical resolution, via RDC I can run it at 2560x1600 on my 30" monitor. However, that only seems to work for RDC. Does anyone know of something I can run on the Mac that will allow me to remotely control it at a different resolution than what is physically set? TIA, Mark

    I have Windows 7 Professional SP1..64bit... and yes windows genuinely activated. I want to install Windows Media player 12 and it seems i require the "Media Feature pack"... I can't seem to find a good install. I've tried at least 4 of them.. both 64bit and x86.     Given an arbitrary single argument representing a file (or directory, device, etc), how do I get the absolute path of the argument? I've seen many answers to this question involving find/ls/stat/readlink and $PWD, but none that suits my need. It looks like the closest answer is ksh's "whence" command, but I need it to work in sh/bash. Assume a file, foo.txt, is located in my home directory, /Users/matthew/foo.txt. I need the following behavior, despite what my current working directory is (I'm calling the command "abs"): (PWD is ~) $ abs foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs ~/foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs ./foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt $ abs /Users/matthew/foo.txt /Users/matthew/foo.txt What would "abs" really be?     Hi, I'm using dkim-milter, Postfix on Ubuntu (I think I used these instructions for setting up).   • No USB 04b4:0307 mike input after 10.04

    I am using an USB phone that is in fact a so-called "sound card" based on the 04b4:0307 chip. In fact, I have two different phones using 04b4:0307 and in fact I have a sound USB key too. This, I believe, is the start of why they call 04b4:0307 "ubiquitous" (instead of oh four bee...). But not "eternal". The mike worked in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 but not later ([email protected]). "not working" means that 04b4:0307 shows in Sound Preference but that its vu-meter is mute. I have posted the full lsusb and the result of tests in various systems here: http://www.papou.byethost9.com/tmp/1043601.html Note: Tests done on VirtualBox (thankfully). But UbuntUnity no longer works on VB, so I used the LinuxMint equivalent. ?hat's fate. I could not find any problem report close enough. What should be my next step? I believe the problem occurs in module snd-usb-audio. One thing I might try if I knew how is hacking a DEB with its 10.04's source. I can hack DEBs. Any hint welcome on how to make a DEB overriding a kernel packed module. I mean that the newly installed module should have precedence, be loaded instead, the module installed with the kernel. TIA !

  • Virus that duplicates word documents as exe

    Hi, We are facing a virus problem on our network, but I'm unable to identify it, so we can't properly deal with it. The symptoms are that the virus duplicates a word document (.doc) generating a new archive with the same name, but with an exe extension, and, after that, the virus hides the original file. So, when the user clicks over the file, it propagates itself. Symantec AV seems to be able to block it: every time that the virus tries to generate the exe, symantec blocks it, but at this point, the original file was already converted to hidden, so the user thinks that the file has been deleted. Symantec identifies it as a simple trojan horse. I already started a full scan, but it didn't found nothing. I'm trying to know the virus name in order to fight it.   • Can my laptop run dual 1080p (Sony Vaio - Nvidia 330M)

    I am looking to buy a monitor to setup dual monitors for my laptop and was wondering if my laptop could handle 2 x 1080p. I have a Sony Vaio VPCF116FG which has a Nvidia GeForce 330M chip and 1GB dedicated graphics memory. The laptop also has a Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (1.60 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.80 GHz) but I don't know if that's relevant(?). The laptop screen has a native resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080) so I'll be looking at buying a external monitor with 1080p to connect up using a HDMI cable. So, the question is, will my laptop be able to handle it's own 1080p screen AND an external 1080p screen? TIA, Charles

    Hi, I'm trying to use Windows XP Movie Maker, but when I try to import an AVI video, it shows an error telling me that it wasn't import due to an the fact that the codec wasn't available (I'm able to see the video using the windows media player) First, the error message suggested to enable the option "download codecs automatically" under "tools options general". I did it. But know the error tells me that the codec wasn't available and, if I already installed it, I should reinitialize movie maker. I also already did it... The error msg is: The file D:\movie1.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. Any hint? TIA, Bob

  • Linux clients and Windows Servers can connect but not windows clients

    This is driving me insane because I can't make head or tails of it. We have two DCs (W2K3 SP1) and I'v tried this once on each machine as a sanity check. DHCP is being served by either one of the machines and all machines get an address no problem. The servers can connect/ping/browse to the www and so can all our linux clients. But NONE of our windows clients (all windows 7). I can do anything within the network, I can even ping the firewall/router but nothing from the windows clients is leaving the confines of our subnet. I don't get it. The linux and windows clients are both served from the same DHCP server, the gateway is the same, everything is the same. Anyone care to take a shot at how to resolve this? I tried adding explicit routes at the clients, but still no go. TIA SMIM

  • Removing an iSCSI Target - iSCSI initiator 2.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2

    For the life of me I cannot figure out how to remove an iSCSI target (Dell Equallogic SAN) from a Windows Server 2003 box. The volume shows up in Windows as drive letter Y:\ Using the iSCSI initiator, I can remove the Target Portal, but cannot remove the Target itself. Can someone give me some guidance on this? I've gone as far as setting the volume offline in the Dell SAN management tool, and even permanently deleted the volume. The Target no longer shows up in the iSCSI Initiator properties, but the drive letter is still there under My Computer. And now Windows is throwing delayed write errors for that drive. There must be a proper way to successfully remove an attached Target. TIA!

  • Unknown Host Error, is this a registrar problem or a host problem?

    Hi guys, I am dealing with a barrel of weasels on this one. Ad agency registered the domain in mid-August with Network Solutions. 72 hours ago I updated the DNS to point to a host provided by an associate of the client whose credentials are dubious. The DNS servers are at NETSONIC.NET (NS1 and NS2) and respond to ping no problem. I can FTP to the server using its IP but the name is no go. The name is also no go for tracert and ping: tracert voodoobbqfranchise.com Unable to resolve target system name voodoobbqfranchise.com. ping voodoobbqfranchise.com ping: unknown host voodoobbqfranchise.com I called NetSol and of course their tier one guy swears it must be the host but I insist that an unknown host must be a NetSol issue. Otherwise we'd get somethng like an httpd_conf error after being routed to the Netsonic server. Am I right? Is this an issue at the registrar? TIA JG

    Hi all, On Windows I used to quickly run a dir *.mp3 to find all files with an mp3 extension in the current directory. Is there a similarly quick way to do it with bash? The ls command seems to have a way to ignore a pattern, but not to show only the pattern. I can do find . -maxdepth 1 -iname '*.mp3' or ls|grep -i '\.mp3$' but neither of these flow out of my fingers in half a second or less;) Any quicker alternatives? TIA Andy

You have filesystem corruption OR You have dropped tables in innodb_file_per_table format If I have innodb_file_per_table enabled, and accidently dropped a table, while the datadir is mounted as within the / partition , can data still be recovered? Obviously you can't work with an unmounted root filesystem. Our VPS host has a defaulted filesystem table which we cannot customize. I was wondering in case of any future scenario. edit: would mounting the / filesystem through NFS onto another system as read-only be a workaround? TIA.
