• Error when connecting to shared Windows Printers

  I'm replacing our Windows 2003 print server with one running on Windows 2008 R2. I have connected and configured all of our printers and can successfully print to them from the server itself. All of the printers are shared and user's have permission to print on all of them. Whenever one of our clients attempts to connect through the shares they receive the following error message: Operation could not be completed (error 0x0000709). Double check the printer name and make sure that the printer is connected to the network. No messages are generated on the client Event Log nor is anything generated on the server. I have reinstalled the drivers as suggested by a few forum posts I came across and it didn't solve the issue. There are twelve different printer drivers and they are all experiencing this issue so I believe it is unrelated to the driver. I have disabled UAC on both the client and server since that has caused so many headaches before, but it too did not solve this problem. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this?

• Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity. Please, please, someone have the answer. Here are my system specs: -Intel i7-3770k -AsRock z77 Extreme3 -Samsung 840 pro SSD -WD Caviar Black 1tb

• Why are group policy preference drive mappings not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. To note: The mappings were applied before the GPO with a login script using the : net use ... command - all was working perfectly and correctly for the domain administrator user as well - That removes sharing and security problem (IMO) My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. • Launching Installer Via Powershell and WinRM and Nothing Happens

  I'm currently working on a Powershell script to run some Microsoft Hotfix installers remotely on several Windows Server 2008 R2 servers that I manage. Basically, the script copies all the appropriate files up to the server, and then runs the installer via Invoke-Command, like so: function InstallCU { Write-Host "Installing June 2013 CU..." Invoke-Command -ComputerName $ServerName -ScriptBlock { Start-Process "c:\aaa\prjcusp2\ubersrvprj2010-kb2817530-fullfile-x64-glb.exe" -ArgumentList "/passive" } } If I run the "Start-Process" command locally on the server, the installer runs properly. However, when trying to run it remotely, nothing happens (actually, I can see the installer start up in Task Manager, but it closes a couple seconds later and doesn't run). I've attempted giving the Invoke-Command -Credentials, I've turned off UAC on the server, and I've ensured that my WinRM settings (running 'winrm quickconfig' and setting TrustedHosts to *) are correct. I've also tried having the Invoke-Command script run a local Powershell script to run the installer and changing the Argument from '/passive' to 'quiet' (in case it can't remotely launch something that has a UI), but again, no dice. Is there anything else I can try, or am I just not going to be able to do this?

• RoboCopy errors on Windows Server 2008

  I am getting bizarre error with RoboCopy in Server 2008. It will randomly hang with "The specified network name is no longer available." error. Once that happens, it will continue to fail on the retries. But of course the remote server IS still available on the network and can be reached with other tools. I think it must be somehow permission related but I can't figure out what is wrong. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Other info: Options : *.* /S /E /COPY:DAT /NP /R:10 /W:30 If I turn on the /B option it will fail 100% of the time at the very beginning (that's why I think it has to be somehow permission-related) The two servers are standalone and I am doing a NET USE command prior to the robocopy It does not matter what user account on the remote server. Tried both Administrator and another user which was also a member of the local Administrators group UAC is turned off on both sides It is not always the same file that hangs. Sometimes it will get through half or more and sometimes it will fail on the first file

• Problems with synaptic touchpad

  The "enhanced" features of the synaptics touchpad (ie scroll, pinch zoom) on my windows 7 64 bit dell studio 17 only work intermittently. This was an issue with the original OEM driver and also with the new driver from synaptics - please do not suggest that i update, reinstall, install as administrator, check or jiggle the driver - if i hear that one more time i will freak out. I have researched this for days and appears to be a common problem without a solution (many suggestions to update the driver though -argh). Dell and synaptics have not been helpful. I have checked that syntpehn.exe and syntphelper.exe are running (sometimes the UAC seems to block syntpehn.exe from running at startup). When the touchpad fails i can still use it to control the pointer and access the synaptics settings although some of the options are disabled (greyed out or simply unresponsive). It is the only pointing device i have installed - i had a logitech trackball attached but have uninstalled all software and drivers (including hidden devices) as per synaptic. It is also the only device using IRQ 12. Any help would be greatly appreciated except "update the driver".

• DVD Share on Vista Home Premium Failing

  UPDATE: - I can't find any Local Policy Editor for Vista Home Premium, as suggested. - I did learn about registry keys: allocatecdroms, allocatefloppies, allocatedasd and tried adding these keys (individually and collectively) and setting them to both 0 or 1. There was no positive affect on read access to the DVD root folder - always Access Denied. ORIGINAL POST: Failing read access to the root folder of a DVD drive in Vista Home Premium laptop using the Guest account - Access Denied. The client is an XP Home PC that can see, but not access, the data in the share. I'm only trying to read the data DVD - not trying to write/burn anything. On the Vista laptop, I have: All Firewalls and Antivirus disabled.UAC disabled. Password checking disabled. "Advanced Shared" the DVD drive, with "Everyone" having full-access permissions to the share. Tried adding Guest and Anonymous users having full-access permissions to the share. RestrictAnonymous=0 set in the registry. Both PC's are in the same workgroup (MSHOME) The XP Home client sees the shared DVD in \Vista_Hostname\ but when I double click the drive icon on the client, I get a popup that access is denied, check with the administrator, etc. I can share other folders on the Vista PC and see and READ these from the XP Home client. If I enable password checking on the Vista side, I get a user/password popup, and I can authenticate (using my known Vista account, that happens to have Admin rights) and then I can get to see and read the DVD data. I need to open this up so that the (default) Guest user can see and access the DVD data files.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 Finding Hidden files that are causing drive to fill up

  What is the best way to find out what files are sucking up so much space? My Windows directory lists its size as 15 GB but when I run a powershell script against it, it shows 40 GB. It seems 40 GB is about right because if I use that 40 GB and add it to the rest of my folders on C I get the 45 GB that is in use. I checked volume shadow copy and that is disabled and there are no volume shadow files listed. My page file is limited to 3 GB. How can I find out what files are taking 25 GB of space? Final Results: We ended up disabling UAC and then the Properties showed the true file size of the Windows folder, as shown in powershell script. This allowed us to drill down to the folder that had the issues... In our case it was in C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\VMware\VDM there were several large dump files, these were the mysterious unknown files in WinDirStat. It turns out our nessus scan is crashing a view service for a couple seconds so it creates a large dump file. So we will try this.. https://discussions.nessus.org/thread/5212

• Administrative shares in Windows 7 Pro not visible

  My desktop machine has a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. For some reason the standard administrative shares Admin$, C$, D$, etc are not visible, either in Computer Management - Shared Folders - Shares or via net share. I also have a laptop with a clean install of Windows 7 Professional, and I can see the admin shares in both places. As such, I can map to \\laptop\c$ from the desktop, but I can't map to \\desktop\c$ from the laptop. I pretty much took the defaults during the Windows 7 installations. I've tried adding LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to the registry on the desktop, but that didn't work. On the desktop I've also disabled UAC, turned off Windows firewall, removed it from a homegroup, made sure file and printer sharing is turned on, but nothing has worked. There is some subtle difference between the two machines that I can't seem to find. I'm logging into both machines using a local account that is in the Administrators group. Both accounts have the same name and password. I really don't want to have to create a new share for the desktop's C drive, especially since C$ is visible and working on the laptop and therefore I should be able to make it work on the desktop. Any idea why the admin shares would work on one machine and not another? Or why LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy would fail?

• Understanding how IE's SmartScreen works

  Today I downloaded an update to our mail server on my dev machine using IE9 on Win7 Pro. I directed IE to save the file on our server's shared drive so I could install it later. When the download finished, IE showed a red banner at the bottom and said that, ".exe is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer." There were three buttons, "Delete", "Actions", and "View downloads". I selected "Actions" just because I had never seen this before. It showed a "SmartScreen Filter" dialog basically giving three choices: "Don't run this program (recommended)", "Delete program", and "Run anyway". I just canceled the dialog because I didn't want to run it in the first place; I just wanted to download it so I could run it later on the server. So when I did try to run it, it would blow up immediately saying, "Setup was unable to create the directory - Error 5: Access is denied." I tried unblocking the file, "Run as Administrator" even though I already was Administrator, turning off UAC, etc. Cutting to the chase, I finally downloaded the file again, ran WinMerge on the two and it showed they were identical, except the new one ran fine. I went back to my dev machine, downloaded the file through Firefox and then ran it on the server, again fine. But when I tried again through IE, again SmartScreen showed its red banner and somehow clobbered the file even though it was stored on another machine, and WinMerge can't tell the difference between it and a good file. I've looked around on the web for how SmartScreen works, but they all give user-level descriptions of it. What I want to know is, what does it do to that file to make it unrunnable on another machine? Thanks

• Transcoding media server streaming to the iPhone

  I have a huge collection of videos in different formats, but with one thing in common: They are not playable on an iPhone (or iPod Touch). Instead of complaining about Apple's IMHO broken world view ("there are no video formats but quicktime and mp4"), I wonder if there's a solution out there that allows streaming these different videos to the iPhone. This means that the source media needs to be transcoded on the fly. I already tried a few solutions out there, but with varying success: PS3 Media Server kind of worked, but only once and only for one single file. TVersity is said to work, but it requires UAC to be disabled and I don't see any need for this. The solution I'm looking for should run on Windows 2008 Server or Linux. I just can't believe that there's nothing out there that would allow me to stream my huge video collection on my iPhone (we're talking Wifi here, not 3G). After looking at the answers provided and after retrying TVersity without much success, I gave Orb another try and while the web interface failed to work for me, the iPhone Application (I tried the free one at first) actually worked flawlessly. And not only that, it also manages to convert the streams on-the-fly, so you don't have to wait for the transcoding process to finish before playback starts. On my 2.26 Ghz MacMini Server, this worked even with 1080p material. For Windows 2008 Server users out there: Remember to install the Desktop Experience Feature in the Server Manager if you intend this to work. Of all the stuff I had a look at, this really provided instant-success - even though I'm now probably sending the contents of my harddrive to orb's central server (sigh)

• Windows 7 access denied to executables.. by what?

  Ever since I started using Windows 7 this problem has been bothering me. From time to time I see similar questions popping up on misc forums, but never did I see an answer. Here are two scenarios that nearly always reproduce it: the explorer way with explorer, navigate to a directory containing at least one exe file go one directory up immediately delete the directory just navigated to yields Folder Acces Denied dialog stating You need permission to perform this action You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder, with the buttons try Again and Cancel hitting Try Again never works immediately. Waiting a minute or so and then clickig it again does work note: if in step 2 and waiting a minute or more before going up one directory, the problem does not occur and the folder can be deleted the visual studio way build a project producing an exe file run the executable then close it immediately build the project again (by changing a single character in a source file for example) yields fatal error LNK1168: cannot open /path/to/the.exe for writing note: if in step 2 and waiting a minute or more before building again, the problem does not occur some specs happens both on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit, with VS2008/2010/2011 happens on 3 different machines I do not have a virusscanner of any kind I do have a bunch of services disabled, but nothing that prevents Windows from running normally, UAC is disabled as well happens on any type of disc I always use a user account that is in the Administrators group Obviously both scenarios are very similar and extremely reproducable. So I figured some process must have the file open for some reason, and release it again later. However, using systinternal's handle -a the exe file in question never shows up. (that is the correct way to use handle, right?) So while explorer/VS are reporting they cannot access the file, handle.exe says it's not in use anywhere. This leaves me rather clueless, so I'm wondering if someone can come up with a solution: why does this happen, and how to solve it?

• Windows 8.1 Upgrade: I have to run everything as administrator now?

  I was running Windows 8 x64 Professional before and I never had to run programs as administrator to get them to function fully. Examples: Chrome OpenVPN GUI I always have my user under the local "Administrators" group and also disable UAC by putting the slider for it at the very bottom. This always did the trick. After the Windows 8.1 upgrade, I run into a few issues: Running Chrome normally, the Chrome icon doesn't appear in the taskbar. Chrome won't run in the background. OpenVPN GUI has errors when launching. Running both as administrator (Right Click Run as Administrator) fixes those issues and they run perfectly. What has changed in Windows 8.1 upgrade to cause these "problems"? I'm an advanced user, I don't want to have to worry about administrative rights. Any advice on how to fix these problems? EDIT I also get prompted for administrator permission to delete directories under "Program Files" now... that never used to happen before. I can hit Continue and it will allow me to delete, but just another symptom of the problem...

Symbolic Link - Link's permissions only affect delete/rename operations on the link itself, read/write access (to the target) is governed by the target's permissions Junction - Junction's permissions affect enumeration, revoking permissions on the junction will deny file listing through that junction, even if the target folder has more permissive ACLs The permissions make it interesting, as symlinks can allow legacy applications to access configuration files in UAC-restricted areas (such as %ProgramFiles%) without changing existing access permissions, by storing the files in a non-restricted location and creating symlinks in the restricted directory.

• Changing the Start Menu Power Button - Setting does not work: only (Shut down) is available

  This is the second time I try to change this setting on a Vista based OS and I can't get it to work again. OS: Windows Server 2002 SP2 (not R2) = Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002] = Vista When I go to: Power Options - Change Plan Settings - Change advanced power settings - Power buttons and lid - Start menu power button - Setting: the available combo box will only show the option Shut down. No other options are available. This server is part of a domain and has not been set up by me. I have not yet talked with the domain admin, but as far as I could tell from googling, only Win7 has group policy options for the start menu. (And yes, OC I will talk to the domain admin to see if he has any clue - which I doubt.) (Edit: I have now talked to our domain admin, and he's got no clue either.) I'm responsible for this server and a local administrator but not a domain administrator. I switched off User Account Control (UAC) yesterday without problems. Since I always log into this machine via RDP and this being a server, the natural choice would be the option (Log out) and not (Shut down). What can I do to fix it or to find out why it cannot be changed? Thanks!

• Windows preventing running of Telnet client

  At first, I had issues because Windows 7 doesn't install the Telnet client by default (also, SuperUser has a thread). So, after installing it (and restarting, like Windows asked, though completely unnecessary), I opened a command prompt, and went to run my new Telnet program. I enter telnet, and receive: C:\Users\[USER]>telnet 'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "That's odd," I think to myself. So, in Windows explorer, I navigate to \Windows\System32 and see telnet.exe sitting in that folder. If I double-click on the executable file, the Telnet command prompt opens for me without a problem. So, I return to my Windows Command Prompt, and enter: C:\Users\[USER]>\Windows\System32\telnet.exe '\Windows\System32\telnet.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. And then (grep comes from cygwin): C:\Users\ryan\Desktop>dir \Windows\System32 | grep telnet Nothing. I've disabled UAC and have no idea why my Command Prompt is lying to me. Anyone experience something similar? To recap: In Windows 7, I have installed Telnet and can see it in my System32 folder, but cannot run it via a Command Prompt.

• Notepad and Regedit does not launch from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, but will from C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  My work machine was recently updated from Windows XP 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I have found a few odd things that I can not figure out why they are occurring. If I type in Notepad.exe or RegEdit.exe from the Run diaglog the applications will not launch. When executing RegEdit.exe from the Run dialog the UAC does display asking for admin privileges, but the application never launches. Also, if I go to the Start menu and click on Notepad from there, Notepad never launches either. Other programs seem to be okay, like mspaint, wordpad, etc. Now, if I launch Notepad or RegEdit from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 then these applications will run, though I think these are the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version. I am not sure what is going on. Has anyone seen this behavior before and how to fix it? I have Windows 7 64-bit at home and I don't have this issue. I even copied Notepad.exe from home and place it in the C:\ folder and tried to launch it from there and it still doesn't work. Regards, Mark

• How To Disable Control Panel in Windows 7

  If you have a shared computer that your family and friends can access, you might not want them to mess around in the Control Panel, and luckily with a simple tweak you can disable it. Disable Control Panel with Group Policy Note: This process uses Local Group Policy Editor which is not available in Home versions of Windows 7. Skip down below for the registry hack version that works on Home editions as well. First type gpedit.msc into the Search box in the Start menu and hit Enter. When Local Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates then select Control Panel in the left Column. In the right column double-click on Prohibit access to the Control Panel. In the next window, select Enable, click OK, then close out of Local Group Policy Editor. After the Control Panel is disabled, you’ll notice it’s no longer listed in the Start Menu. If the user tries to type Control Panel into the Search box in the Start menu, they will get the following message indicating it’s restricted. Disable Control Panel with a Registry Tweak You can also tweak the Registry to disable Control Panel. This will work with all versions of Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Making changes in the Registry is not recommended for beginners and you should create a Restore Point, or backup the Registry before making any changes. Type regedit into the Search box in the Start menu and hit Enter. In Registry Editor navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer. Then right-click in the right pane and create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the value NoControlPanel. Then right-click on the new Value and click Modify…   In the Value data field change the value to “1” then click OK. Close out of Registry Editor and restart the machine to complete the process. When you get back from reboot, you’ll notice Control Panel is no longer listed in the Start menu. If a user tries to access it by typing Control Panel into the Search box in the Start menu… They will get the following message indicating it is restricted, just like if you were to disable it via Group Policy. If you want to re-enable the Control Panel, go back into the Registry and change the NoControlPanel value back to “0” then reboot the computer. This comes in handy if you have inexperienced users working on your machine and don’t want them messing with Control Panel settings. • How To Quickly Reboot Directly from Windows 7 to XP, Vista, or Ubuntu

  One of the biggest annoyances with a dual-boot system is having to wait for your PC to reboot to select the operating system you want to switch to, but there’s a simple piece of software that can make this process easier. This guest article was written by Ryan Dozier from the Doztech tech blog. With a small piece of software called iReboot we can skip the above step all together and instantly reboot into the operating system we want right from Windows. Their description says: “Instead of pressing restart, waiting for Windows to shut down, waiting for your BIOS to post, then selecting the operating system you want to boot into (within the bootloader time-limit!); you just select that entry from iReboot and let it do the rest!” Don’t worry about iReboot reconfiguring  your bootloader or any dual boot configuration you have. iReboot will only boot the selected operating system once and go back to your default settings. Using iReboot iReboot is quick and easy to install. Just download it, link below, run through the setup and select the default configuration. iReboot will automatically figure out what operating systems you have installed and appear in the taskbar. Go over to the taskbar and right click on the iReboot icon and select which operating system you want to reboot into. This method will add a check mark on the operating system you want to boot into. On your next reboot the system will automatically load your choice and skip the Windows Boot Manager. If you want to reboot automatically just select “Reboot on Selection” in the iReboot menu.   To be even more productive, you can install iReboot into each Windows operating system to quickly access the others with a few simple clicks.   iReboot does not work in Linux so you will have to reboot manually. Then wait for the Windows Boot Manager to load and select your operating system.   Conclusion iReboot works on  Windows XP, Windows Vista,  and Windows 7 as well as 64 bit versions of these operating systems. Unfortunately iReboot is only available for Windows but you can still use its functionality in Windows to quickly boot up your Linux machine. A simple reboot in Linux will take you back to Windows Boot Manager. • Change The Windows 7 Start Orb the Easy Way

  Want to make your Windows 7 PC even more unique and personalized?  Then check out this easy guide on how to change your start orb in Windows 7. Getting Started First, download the free Windows 7 Start Button Changer (link below), and extract the contents of the folder.  It contains the app along with a selection of alternate start button orbs you can try out.   Before changing the start button, we advise creating a system restore point in case anything goes wrong.  Enter System Restore in your Start menu search, and select “Create a restore point”. Please note:  We tested this on both the 32 bit and 64 bit editions of Windows 7, and didn’t encounter any problems or stability issues.  That said, it is always prudent to make a restore point just in case a problem did happen. Click the Create button… Then enter a name for the restore point, and click Create. Changing the Start Orb. Once this is finished, run the Windows 7 Start Button Changer as administrator by right-clicking on it and selecting “Run as administrator”.  Accept the UAC prompt that will appear. If you don’t run it as an administrator, you may see the following warning.  Click Quit, and then run again as administrator. You should now see the Windows 7 Start Button Changer.  On the left it shows what your current (default) start orb looks like inactive, when hovered over, and when selected.  Click the orb on the right to select a new start button. Here we browsed to the sample orbs folder, and selected one of them.  Let’s give Windows the Media Center orb for a start orb.  Click the orb you want, and then select open. When you click Open, your screen will momentarily freeze and your taskbar will disappear.  When it reappears, your computer will have gone from having the old, default Start orb style… …to your new, exciting Start orb!  Here it is default, and glowing when hovered over. Now, the Windows 7 Start Orb Changer will change, and show your new Start orb on the left side.  If you would like to revert to the default orb, simply click the folder icon to restore it.  Or, if you would like to change the orb again, restore the original first and then select a new one. The orbs don’t have to be round; here’s a fancy Windows 7 logo as the start button. The start orb change will work in the Aero and Aero basic (which Windows 7 Start uses) themes, but will not show up in the classic, Windows 2000 style themes.  Here’s how the new start button looks with the Aero Classic theme: There are tons of orbs available, including this cute smiley, so choose one that you like to make your computer uniquely yours. • MSBuild (.NET 4.0) access problems

  I'm using Cruise Control .NET as my build server (Windows 2008 Server). Yesterday I upgraded my ASP.NET MVC project from VS 2008/.NET 3.5 to VS 2010/.NET 4.0. The only change I made to my ccnet.config's MSBuild task was the location of MSBuild.exe. Ever since I made that change, the build has been broken with the error: MSB4019 - The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk. This file does, in fact, exist in the location specified (I solved a problem similar to this when setting up the build server for VS2008/.NET 3.5 by copying the files from my dev environment to my build environment). So I RDP'ed into the build machine and opened a command prompt, used MSBUILD to attempt to build my project. MSBUILD returns the error: MSB3021 - Unable to copy file "obj\debug....dll". Access to the path 'bin....dll' is denied. Since I'm running MSBUILD from the command prompt, logged in with an account that has administrative privileges, I'm assuming that MSBUILD is running with the same privileges that I have. Next, I tried to copy the file that MSBUILD was attempting to copy. In this case, I get the UAC dialog that makes me click the [Continue] button to complete the copy. I'd like to avoid installing Visual Studio 2010 on my build machine, can anyone suggest other fixes I might try?

Error code = 0x8007000b In MS connect this is reported as a bug but MS is unable to reproduce the problem altough when you search the fora I'm not the only one with this problem. So any help is appreciated.

• UnauthorizedAccessException on MemoryMappedFile in C# 4.

  Hey, I wanted to play around with using a MemoryMappedFile to access an existing binary file. If this even at all possible or am I a crazy person? The idea would be to map the existing binary file directly to memory for some preferably higher-speed operations. Or to atleast see how these things worked. using System.IO.MemoryMappedFiles; System.IO.FileInfo fi = new System.IO.FileInfo(@"C:\testparsercap.pcap"); MemoryMappedFileSecurity sec = new MemoryMappedFileSecurity(); System.IO.FileStream file = fi.Open(System.IO.FileMode.Open, System.IO.FileAccess.ReadWrite, System.IO.FileShare.ReadWrite); MemoryMappedFile mf = MemoryMappedFile.CreateFromFile(file, "testpcap", fi.Length, MemoryMappedFileAccess.Read, sec, System.IO.HandleInheritability.Inheritable, true); MemoryMappedViewAccessor FileMapView = mf.CreateViewAccessor(); PcapHeader head = new PcapHeader(); FileMapView.Read<PcapHeader>(0, out head); I get System.UnauthorizedAccessException was unhandled (Message=Access to the path is denied.) on the mf.CreateViewAccessor() line. I don't think it's file-permissions, since I'm running as a nice insecure administrator user, and there aren't any other programs open that might have a read-lock on the file. This is on Vista with UAC disabled. If it's simply not possible and I missed something in the documentation, please let me know. I could barely find anything at all referencing this feature of .net 4.0 Thanks!

• Delphi app manifest file problems under WinXP and Win7

  My last question "List service and services status under Win-7" made me start working on a solution that gives my app the admin privileges under Windows Vista onward based on a .manifest file. I was not sure about continue the previous question with this matter since they are not the same so here is another question: My app now works fine under Win 7 whether or not I run it "as admin" because of the manifest file. My manifest file is as follow: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> <assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0"> <assemblyIdentity version="1.6.0.5" processorArchitecture="X86" name="ServiceMonitorPro" type="win32"/> <description publisher="Powershield Ltd" product="Powershield Service Monitor">Powershield Service Monitor</description> <trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v2"> <security> <requestedPrivileges> <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" uiAccess="false"/> </requestedPrivileges> </security> </trustInfo> </assembly> When the application runs on windows 7 or Vista, the UAC comes with a dialog like this: How can I replace the "unknow" publisher? The other and bigest problem is, even thou the app runs with no problem under Win7 or Vista, under WinXP it is now crashing with the message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." Another thing I would like to add: If I add reference (uses clause) to XPMan the app works fine on WinXP but then it my .manifest file makes no diference under Vista or Win7.
