  I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

• How to solve the problem that Chrome doesn't obey "Show Window side by side" on Win7?

  If I bring out Firefox and Chrome, and right click on the task bar and choose "Show Windows side by side", Chrome will not be arranged side by side. But if it is Firefox and IE, then the 2 windows will in fact be arranged side by side. If it is Chrome showing and we press and hold "Window key" and LEFT ARROW, then in fact it does move to the left as a half size window. So Chrome partially work on Win7 for the expected behavior. Any method to make it work for the first case? thanks.

• Win7 recognizing 100% of my RAM some places, not others.

  Before you go blaming it on a 32bit OS, I'm running Win7 64bit. I have 4x 1GB sticks of RAM installed. I recently RMA'd one stick and installed the replacement. It would seem that parts of my system are recognizing it and others aren't. Both System Properties and dxdiag show the full 4GB, but task manager and rainmeter are only reporting 3GB. What's numbers should I trust and how can I fix this? Here's screenshots of what I'm seeing.

• Win7 Ultimate 64bit not finding my SSD, any ideas?

  So I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my new SSD (Kingston SNVP325-S2/64GB) and I have unplugged my other drives (for the install only). The SSD is detected by BIOS, I am running the latest Firmware for my motherboard P5N-E SLI (775 socket). Upon getting the Windows 7 install screen, it gives me a 'no drives detected'. I have tried Load Driver and downloding nForce drivers (latest for Win7 64bit signed WHQL) results in a message of (something like) "To continue please click Load Driver and load 32-bit and signed 64-bit drivers... blah blah" ... basically it does NOT accept my nForce SATA drivers, nor my 2ndary SATA drivers (JMicron? can't recall the exact name now). I have tried F8 at loading to 'disable driver signing' in hopes that it was an unsigned driver, however nothing works. The SSD is not detected by the Windos 7 installer. I wasted 4 hours on this last night, and gave up, and got nowhere. Anyone heard / ran into this issue before? How can I get the drive detected? Some more details: - Kingston SNVP325-S2/64GB V+ SSD - ASUS P5N-E SLI MOBO - 8GB RAM A-DATA (memory is checked out and fine)

• How can I determine what is killing my network adapter win7 or vista?

  I thought this issue was like another person here, and that downloading the nvidia chipset drivers was the solution. However that is not all that is going on. This machine had Vista 64bit and is now Win7. Same issue with both. I have explicitly been denying network driver updates since getting things working again and when a Windows updates occurs on seemingly benign Office updates the adapter fails to work. Is the update process somehow protecting this machine by turning off things and it fails to recover connectivity after a restart? All that seems to ever work is a system restore. Which does work. Since there are 25 pending updates asking to do there thing, I hate to think this is a one by one update test to find the culprit. Any ideas? This has an integrated nic, video, and I guess audio on the motherboard. ES5200 intel cpu on a gateway 4800-05e I am not quite sure how to determine the actual network adapter. This is a wired adapter. I suppose worst case I can try another adapter if this keeps happening.

  Migrating an app from an expensive and unreliable dedicated embedded x86 box running WinXP-embedded to COTS hardware (Dell E6410 laptop) running normal Win7-64. At this time, it's not feasible to deploy using Windows 7 embedded. The problem is, that the system is still sort of "embedded". The power could shut off at virtually any time without prior warning. We've stripped the OS down and removed the battery capability so that it will power down as desired. The app never writes to the disk, so it's not like we're going to corrupt anything terribly. The system is essentially idle after our app is up and running (with the exception of some computation, graphics, and TCP/IP and serial communications) so the OS enters a pretty stable state rather quickly. After a power-loss however, it rightly complains that Windows did not shut down successfully and presents the user with the Windows Error Recovery text screen. If left alone, it does eventually move on booting just fine, but we'd like to skip that step if possible. WinXP-embedded is designed to do this automatically, so I know it's possible. I've looked at the Kernel Switches but I didn't see anything documented for "Skip Windows Error Recovery". • Upgraded users to Win7. Now getting "path not found" when saving files or opening attachments

  We have a Server 2008 AD environment with about 5k users. We just rolled out Windows 7 SP1 (were XP) with great success. However, about once a day we get a few calls that a user opens a file from their Documents (the folder is on the server and redirected), edits it and attempts to save but Win7 reports that the path is not found either because it doesn't exist or no permissions. The only way to fix it is to delete the profile. In addition we get about the same number but different users saying that they cannot open attachments from Outlook 2010 due to no permission. We have to edit the temp Outlook storage path in the registry to fix it (or delete the profile). I think the two issues may be related. What scares us is that we rolled out 1 month ago and had no calls of this nature until about 2 weeks ago. It started off as one or two but seems to be growing. Any ideas? We're going to open a Microsoft ticket but I wanted to seenif anyone else has run into this. Thanks!

• Vmware Workstation, Win7 host, Ubuntu guests with Nat + Host-only networks but they cannot connect to the Internet

  I have a Win7 host machine with Vmware Workstation. In the workstation I have 3 Ubuntu installed. All 3 Ubuntu guests have a Nat network - to access the internet without asking the router for a local address - and a Host-only network - to connect all Ubuntu quests and the host in a private network for internal communication, without touching the router. When I try to make any of the Ubuntu quests to get data from the internet - assuming that they would figure out that the Nat-ed interface can access the requested data - they fail and report that there is no route to my query. If I disconnect the 2nd interface on the Ubuntu guests with the Host-only network and restart networking, they start to know the route to the internet. Odd, during the installation of the guests they asked which of the 2 given interfaces - with Nat and Host-only config - should be used to get updates during installation and they oddly managed to get the updates. Not so after the installation has finished and rebooted. I have checked the Virtual Network Editor that the Nat interface should use my real network card to access the net, so there should be no problem. I wish not to use the router's dhcp service to give the Ubuntu quests an address, and also I don't want the guests to be accessable from the local network directly, but only by the host - that's the Host-only network is for. Any suggestions?   Hi! This is seems to be "hardware" and not "software" / "programming" question, but I need to use this share in my programs, so it is "close to programming". We had an XP based wireless network. The server is XP Professional, the clients are XP Home (Notebooks). This was working well with folder sharing (with user rights, not simple share). Then we replaced the one of the notebook with Win7/X64 notebook. First time this can reach the server, and the another client too. Later I went to another sites, and connect to another servers, another networks. And then, when I return to this network, I saw that I cannot connect to this server. Nothing of resources I see, and when try to dbl click on this computer, I got login window, where I can write anything, never I can login... The interesting part, that: Another XP home can see the server, can login as quest, or with other user. The server can see the XP home notebook. The Win7 can see the notebook's shared folders, and XP home can see the Win7 shared folders. The server can see the Win7 folders, BUT: the Win7 cannot see the server folders. Cannot see the resources too... The Win7 is in "work networking group", the group name is not mshome. I tried everything on the server, I tried to remove MS client, restore it with simple sharing, set guest password, etc., but I lost the possibilities to access this server from Win7.   Vista Ultimate 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit I've read through similar questions about sharing between Win7 and Vista, but none of them have resolved my issue of not being able to share between Win7 and Vista: Connecting to a Vista shared folder from Windows 7 Networking Windows 7 and Vista Enable File sharing in Windows Vista Previously I had previously had my Vista and XP system sharing back and forth without any problems. I was able to access the shares without entering a user name / password in the NT challenge prompt (note: account names and passwords were different on the Vista and XP systems). Currently I replaced my XP system with a Win7 system. Now, when I attempt to access shares to/from Vista / Win7, I am continually prompted with an NT challenge to enter my credentials. Things I've Verified/Tried Both systems are on the same workgroup. Win 7 is using the Home network. Vista is using the Private network. In other words, neither system is using a Public network profile. Enabled file sharing with and without password protection on both Vista and Win7 Tried HomeGroup Connections (win7) with Windows to manage connections and Use user accounts to connect. Reviewed too many online articles to count to trouble shoot. Set the shares to have full control by everyone. Set up the shares directly on the directory and through the share manager. My Question How can I enable file sharing between Vista and Win7 without being prompted with a username/password challenge, ever?

• Can only ssh when not using wifi

  So I have 3 machines, a windows 7 desktop that is always wired to my router, osX laptop, and raspberry pi running debian linux. My router is a Linksys e1000 wireless N. My goal is to be able to ssh the raspi from any machine, while it is connected via wifi. My problem is that when trying to ssh from either the win7 or osX to the Pi it either times out, or gives an error: "ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.### port 22: No route to host" The only times that I have managed to connect to the pi from any machine were when it connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Currently with win7 desktop wired, macbook wireless, and pi wireless tests give the following: win7 ping macbook: Destination host unreachable. macbook ping win7: Request timeout. win7 ping pi: Destination host unreachable. macbook ping pi: Request timeout. blah blah blah Plugging the macbook into the router with an Ethernet cable all communication between win7 and macbook works. Pings, ssh, ftp, smb ect... No changes to the pi, still no connections possible to or from any of the other 2 machines. Note All machines, are able to connect to the internet and ssh to the same machine on a completely different network, wired or over wifi. Plugging the Pi in with Ethernet (and macbook still wired) I can ssh to the pi from both win7 and macbook. I can ssh from the pi to macbook. All machines still able to connect the the off network machine. Also another little side note- I was playing warcraft 3 with my roommates the other day, and the only time they were able to see my LAN game was when they were plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable. Once or twice one of the laptops was able to connect over wifi, but not without another computer connecting first via Ethernet. So basically does anyone have any info as to why my router seems to completely ignore local wireless traffic?

• Win7 x64 unresponsive for a minute or so. HD failing?

  On a fully updated Win7 x64, every so often the system stalls for a minute or so. This has been going on for a couple months now. By stalling I mean the mouse responds and I can move windows around, but any window, any program, that is open becomes whiteish when I select it AND any new programs will not open. It doesn't matter what kind of program it is. When the stall stops all clicks I made (open new programs for example) take effect. Nothing shows up consistently (as in every time this happens) in the event log. Today though I was able to find something, but it doesn't reveal much other than the "system was unresponsive". It's a 7009 for "A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Error Reporting Service service to connect." It doesn't matter if I have any USB devices plug-in or not. I've ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. While the machine is unresponsive, I've noticed that Drive D (the other partition on the single internal HD in this laptop) is displayed like this in explorer. This never occurs with Drive C or any other drive on the machine. . SMART report for the physical drive: Read benchmark by HD Tune 5 Pro, probably the most telling piece of the puzzle. Isn't this alone enough to see there is a problem with the drive, regardless of whether the unresponsiveness is caused by such purported problem? Do I have a defective drive? Seagate Tools diag says there is nothing wrong with the drive... UPDATE: I noticed that the windows error reporting service entered the running state then the stopped state and the space between the two events was exactly 2 minutes. Which error it was trying to report I don't know. I check the "Reliability Monitor" and it shows no errors to be reported. I've disabled the windows error reporting service to see if the problem stops.

  Like the title says. I'm sending a simple cUrl cmd from Win7 to CouchDB on my Linux box, and it doesn't work. But if I run the same command in Linux, it works. I'm sending this: curl -X POST 192.168.2.5:5984/test/testdoc -d '{"owner":{"fname":"test","lname":"ing"}}' From windows, it keeps giving me a "error: bad request, reason:invalid UTF-8 JSON". I can run GET commands from windows just fine, I just can't seem to POST to CouchDB.

• WD My Passport detected but not assigned a drive letter

  I have a WD My Passport external drive which used to work fine on my Win7 x64 box until recently. Since the past few days, windows would not detect my external drive. However, Storage under disk management lists my external drive(which means windows can see my drive) but without a drive letter. I am not able to assign a drive letter(the option is grayed out). I installed EASUS Partition Manager which allows me to assign a drive letter, but fails to do so when I apply to save changes. What do i do to assign a drive letter to the drive or make windows to detect it as of old? The external drive works well on Win7 x32(dual boot, same system) and win7 x64 on another box. Update: cant comment from Opera Mini 6 @zeke the drive works absolutely fine on other Win7 boxes and on the dual boot win7 on the same system.

  Using clonezilla, I cloned a win7 installation from the first partition on one drive to the first partition on a second larger drive and then installed ubuntu into the second partition (same configuration as the original drive, just maverick instead of karmic). ubuntu detected the win7 partition properly and added it to the grub menu. However, when I choose the win7 option in grub, I just get a black screen and blinking cursor :( Suggestions please?!?

  I have dell inspiron, previously i have install ubuntu 11.10 on my win7 and make it dual boot. but since i want to upgrade my ubuntu version and change the partion spacing, i have delete 11.10 partion directly and extend my hardrive space(windows + ubuntu) at that moment everything is fine. then i have put 12.04 version pendrive in usb boot from usb and install the 12.04 32 bit . it was installed but can't showing dual boot option like 11.10 and my machine directly boot into win7 . so instantly i again delete my 12.04 partion . Now i am able to login into win7 but whenever i put pendrive(12.04) into usb drive i am facing error of "grub rescue" even though i try to put lower version(11.04) it showing another error "Error: No default or UI configuration directive found boot " i have reinstall win7 and reformat all partion still i am facing same error :( i need help badly.

• Windows 7 with two network cards doesn't route traffic

  I have simple task to do: I have wni7 with two nics.I want to connect another comp(osx) to win7 through second nic to connect it to internet. I already changed the registry. Win7 interface with 192.168.2.1 has no gateway set (no point to do that) OSX interface with 192.168.2.2 has gateway set to 192.168.2.1 I do not add any routes on win7, every thing seems to be already there network on second nic is detected as "undefined network" (probably effect of no gateway) i can achieve any connectivity to internet from OSX only by enabling network connection sharing on nic with 192.168.2.1, but it enables NAT and I'm interested only in pure routing without nat(it's a setup for some research). firewall is off. It seems to me that win7 refuses to forward packets for some reason. Perhaps "undefined network" and NLA service is to blame, although i couldn't find any info about that. Whenever the app is moved with Win+Shift+Left/Right the WM_GETMINMAXINFO message is received, as I'd expect, but MonitorFromWindow(hwnd, MONITOR_DEFAULTTONEAREST) returns the monitor the application has just been moved FROM, rather than the monitor it is moving TO, so if the monitors are of differing resolutions the window end up the wrong size. I'm not sure if there's something else I can call, other then MonitorFromWindow, or whether there's a "moving monitors" message I can hook prior to WM_GETMINMAXINFO. I'm assuming there is a way to do it because "normal" windows work just fine.

• Can I create an application using SlimDX relying on the DirectX DLLs already bundled with Vista/Win7

  I'm working on a .NET application that requires the use of accelerated graphics, currently DirectX 9.0c. The software is quite graphics intensive and must, in addition, be launchable from a CD or by ClickOnce without the user requiring administrator's permissions. I currently use SlimDX, which works great featurewise, but the users are getting rather annoyed by having to install the DirectX redistributable. Especially since this does require elevated permissions. It is rather hard to explain to them why the version of DirectX already bundled with their OS is not sufficient. After all - DirectX 9.0c has been around since 2004, and I'm not using any new fancy features. The ability to deliver an application that "just works" in Vista or Windows 7, without any particular additional prerequisites would be a huge advantage. Therefore: Is there any way I can build an application using DirectX 9.0c based on SlimDX, that relies only on the libraries provided in the standard Windows Vista/Win7 installation? That is - without requiring the additional DirectX redistributable to be installed? If not - is there any other managed (and preferably not abandoned) DirectX wrapper that can serve this purpose? • Running Excel 2007 as admin on Win7 causes “There was a problem sending the command to the program”

  I am running Excel 2007 on Windows 7 64bit. I need to run Excel as administrator so I have the "Run as Administrator" box in the Excel shortcut checked. Now, when I try to open an Excel file by double clicking, I get the following error: There was a problem sending the command to the program Excel opens fine after that, and I can open the file fine through Excel's File/Open menu. Why can't I open the file by double clicking? Some sites suggest changing a specific Excel option. I tried while checking/unchecking Excel's "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" but that didn't help. The issue goes away if I uncheck "Run as Administrator" but I want to be able to leave that checked. Any ideas?

• Can I fix memory leaks in browsers? (Win7 64bit IE9 Chrome)

  I have a habit of opening websites in their own window, then getting interested in something else in another window while leaving the first window open with the intention of returning to finishing reading. Sometimes I'll leave browser windows open for quite a while. When I do, the browser locks-up gigs of memory until it uses so much, IE will no longer respond. I've seen one browser window use up over 2 gigs just sitting there doing nothing. Chrome appears to do it too, but it doesn't use nearly as much as IE. Is there a way to stop this? Any ideas what may be causing it? Is it a problem with the OS or the browsers? Any insight is appreciated.
