• what's the difference between a Volume and a Partition in Windows 7 diskpart

  I was trying to follow the Intel guide for setting up iRST (Intel Rapid Start Technology) on my new laptop. The Intel manual says you need to create a *Volume that is as big or bigger than your available memory, set it to a specific id (id=84), then go into the iRST tool and adjust some settings. Looking at the disk manager on the laptop, I see there is already a Partition labeled as "Hibernation Partition" which is a little bigger than the memory in my system. So it looks like iRST was already set up...BUT, it's a Partition, not a Volume. Here's what the manual says to do: (from: http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf) diskpart list disk select disk x (where x is the disk to use, there's only one disk in this laptop) create partition primary size=X000 (where X000 is the size to create) detail disk (which lists details for the disk. This is where i get hung up) select volume Z (where Z is the *partition you created previously) ** it says the 'detail disk' command will list the volume #, but it doesn't. ** 'detail disk' only lists two "volumes" for Recovery and OS. ** if i do 'list partition', i see the 8 GB *partition labeled as "Hibernation Partition") ** so I can't continue with the following steps: set id=84 override exit The reason I went looking for the manual is because when iRST is enabled in the BIOS, the system won't resume from sleep. When it's disabled, it works fine, but the system goes into (legacy?) Hibernation mode and takes a while to come out of Hibernation. the iRST is supposed to resume from deep sleep very quickly. So, what's the difference between a Volume and a Partition? Should I delete the Hibernation Partition and create a Hibernation Volume? Anyone have any ideas? (if it matters, this is on a Dell XPS 13 with BIOS A08) Thanks! J

• Dual boot nt4 and windows 98

  I am trying to dual boot nt4 and windows 98 se (don't laugh - old computer). I have seen Microsoft's instructions for doing this, but it limits windows 98 to have a Fat16 partition (NT4's NTLDR doesn't understand FAT32) and therefore only 2GB of disk space. I really need it to have more than that. I started with Win 98 (on the 1st partition), repartitioned the disk, then added NT4 on the 2nd partition. NT4 took over the bootloader (as expected), so NT4 boots, but Win 98 doesn't. Right now I am working in VMWare so I can use nonpersistent hard drives (IDE like the real computer) to recover from errors easily. I've tried using XPs NTLDR using the instructions here: http://www.nu2.nu/fixnt4/ , but I got weird errors from NT4 and it never really worked. If XP's NTLDR would work, that should be able to boot both OSes. I've also tried using GRUB. In theory that should work. In fact when booting from super grub disk, it does. But as soon as I install grub to disk, Win 98 boots, but NT 4 blue screens at boot with a 0x0000007b inaccessible_boot_device error (that can be alot of things see MS kb 822051). The incantation I'm using for GRUB 1 is rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 boot So, anybody have some suggestions?

• Huge host CPU usage in idle vmware guest. Ubuntu 10.04 host, Vista SP2 guest

  I'm experiencing huge host CPU usage with an idle vmware guest. Host: Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit 2.6.32-24-generic-pae. (Very new install, i.e 24 hours ago) Hardware is Dell XPS M1530 laptop, 4GB ram. Intel Core II Duo T9300 2.50Ghz The virtualization setting "VT" or something is enabled in my bios. Guest: Completely fresh install of Windows Vista, upgraded to latest SP2 and all windows updates installed. 1024 - 1512MB ram allocated. Absolutely no other software installed on it, apart from VMWare tools. Situation When the guest is doing absolutely nothing, I watch with sysinternals process watch on the guest. This shows that system idle process is between 70 and 99%, usually around 95%. No actual process doing anything. On the host, I watch with top, I get cpu usage of 20% - 80%, usually around 30%. What I have tried Single and Dual processor available to guest - no change. Turn off all peripherals to guest - no network, drives, usb etc - no change. Turn off 3d acceleration for guest - perhaps a small improvement, or no change. Upping allocated ram to guest from 1024MB to 1512MB - no change. Yelling at vmware - no change. I have experienced a similar issue in the past, which was solved by setting the guest to have 1 CPU. This time that hasn't worked.

• Windows XP corrupts registry every several hours

  There is a Dell XPS 400 with Windows Media Center installer. It is installed on RAID (Intel Matrix Storage) which is built-in chipset south bridge. Raid has two 150 Gb WDC drivers connected as mirror. All drivers and updates are installed( sp3 and so on). A week ago PC changed its video mode to 256 colors (like VESA mode) and after several moments I got BSOD: c000021a: 0xc0000005 Doctor watson did not create dump although it is installed as default debugger. After reboot it said that config file is missing or corrupted. So, I boot to recovery console and found that registry file (config) is so small. I've replaced it with one from recovery point and windows booted sucessfully. But after about 3 hrs -- it has crashed again in the same wat! I look in event viewer: is said that Explorer.exe failed to open \global??\DLIAFS. I look in winobj, and found that it is a device. I made "deny from everyone" for this device ACL, and after several hours my windows crashed. I restored registry, boot again and there was no error about DLIAFS. I did full chkdsk and it did not found anything bad. But I found event about error paging to \Harddrive1\D. I do not have pagefile there, but I thought I should check my disk again. Unfortunatelly I cannt use smart tools for RAID, but I downloaded latest software from Intel (it can do the same things like RAID bios can but from windows). It verified my disks, found some errors, fix them, than I rebooted. And it crashed again. I am lost. What (except kernel debugging) could be done here? Thanks

• Black Screen on Logon (windows 7 home premium)

  i have been having some trouble with a dell Xps 15 laptop that i recently purchased. it is under a month old, and a problem has occurred, upon logging on just after start up, the computer will just sit on a black log on screen (with the mouse still visible and active) for a few minutes. it is extremely annoying, especially when im in a rush. the laptop is under a month old. So far, i have tried to update the drivers, all windows update, and still, nothing. also, it doesnt seem to do it when i log into safe mode, or if it does, it will do it for less than 10 seconds, then load the desktop (in normal boot, it usually takes a few minutes). i have also run a number of the inbuilt diagnostics, but found no errors. i want to avoid having to do a system restore for as long as i can. does anyone know anything that can help? (the laptop is running a 500gb SSD, 2gb Nvidia 640m, 8gb ram, 3rd gen i7 quad core with 8 threads) thanks.

• Why do messenger keeps coming up when I adjust screen brightness?

  My Dell Studio XPS 13 has a brightness up & down buttons (Fn + up arrow / down arrow), as do most laptops have. It's running Windows 7 64bit and I've installed Windows Live Messenger (build 14 and something) on it. When I hit Fn + down arrow, to reduce screen brightness, the Messenger window pops up. That's true whether it has been running in background (system tray / minimized) before or not. Note, to make messenger hide itself to the system tray, I've set it to Vista Compatibility mode. I don't think that has anything to do with it though, since if I shut compatibility mode off, the problem persists. There's a thread on the matter here, but with no solution. Thanks, Asaf SOLUTION: Stop Intellitype when using internal keyboard. See detailed howto here. EDIT: Some new findings on the matter - If I exit messenger entirely and restart (or simply stop) the service "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant" the problem is solved until I run messenger again. It persists even after entirely closing messenger, until I restart the said service. EDIT2: The above service "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant" actual name is wlidsvc. There's no shortcut defined for messenger, nor is there any other hot key in its preferences. EDIT3: I'm not sure if it's relates, but some of the Fn keys are not working - Fn + F1 doesn't put the machine to sleep, Fn + F3 doesn't show battery status. EDIT4: Problem probably relates to conflict with IntelliType Pro. See my answer below. Said conflict also causes Undo command when disabling Wireless (Wireless touch button), and other side effects for various keys.

  Need some major help. Running a Dell XPS/Dimension 630i. It came with "SATA 2 RAID 0 With Dual 500GB Hard Drives." I have installed a new, third non-raided drive and installed Ubuntu on it. So now I have Windows on the original hard drive and Ubuntu Linux on the new HD. When I get to the boot menu where I can select an OS, if I select windows I get an error: "No such drive, no such disk." Also, strangely in the first place, in order to even get to the bootloader menu I have had to disable ALL ports under the RAID config. Unless I do this, I will just get to a never-ending blinking cursor. I have tried every conceivable CMOS config and nothing else works. Tried setting port 3 (the new HD w/ Ubuntu) to first hard disk boot priority. Tried disabling all other ports and enabling the Ubuntu HD port and vice versa. • Winamp has slow /skipping video playback on Windows 7

  Hello, I have Windows 7 x64 (7600 90-day trial version) and Winamp 5.6 installed. When I play a video in Windows Media Player, the video plays smooth, however when I play a video in winamp, the video is mostly ok when played back at the original size (but not completely), but if I play it back in fullscreen, the playback gets really slow. The video's audio track plays just fine. I have a DELL XPS 420 computer (8GB of RAM) with a Nvidia GeForce 8800 CTS 512 video card. I've updated to the latest drivers. I have the default Windows 7 codecs, and the CCCP codec pack which used to be all I needed under Windows XP to play all types of videos. Are the codecs needed for Windows Y the same? What's going on? UPDATE: As suggested, I turned off Aero and winamp ran just fine again. So I just have to wait for winamp to be rewritten to work with the way Vista/Windows 7 runs? UPDATE 2: Winamp has updated their player, and it works great with Windows 7 now.

• Problem uninstalling and installing Java on new pc running Windows 7 64 bit os

  I have a new Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 64 bit os. I am attending online classes which require IE 8 and Java version 6 build 20. The pc came with IE 8 32 bit and Java 6 build 21 already installed. I tried to uninstall Java using add and remove programs but after about 45 minutes of "Preparing to remove application" I got an error refering to a missing dll file and the uninstall failed. I used a third party program to remove Java and downloaded Java 6 build 20. My problem is when I try to install it I get the box telling me "Installing program ... this may take a few minutes" however after 30 to 45 minutes nothing has happend and there is no indication in the progress bar that anything is happening then all of a sudden the program bar is full and the program is supposedly installed. When I try to run it however it doesn't work. Someone help please! I can't get access to my classwork with out this! Thanks

• Ubuntu: Memory Leak

  I'm having trouble finding from where this memory leak is occurring. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on a Dell XPS M1530. I have 3GB of ram and I'm finding after about an hour or so of use top shows me 2GBs+ used. The strange thing is when I add up the memory percentages by PID either from top or ps aux I find that I should only be using about 20-25% of my available ram. What brought this to my attention was I've begun running vmware server again. Now, obviously the ram usage spikes when I load a virtual machine, but the memory VMware is using does not account for the memory usage I'm seeing via top or free. Stopping vmware server releases the memory which was allocated to it, but I'm still unable to find where this RAM is being used. After a complete reboot, of course, the memory is fine, but very quickly it climbs to 60-80% usage with the processes only appearing to account for a third of that. Any ideas where I should look for more information on what this could be?

• Windows 7 breaks even in safe mode

  Hi, I have a Dell XPS M1730 with Windows 7 installed. I noticed last night that after a few hours of use, the fans kicked into full and I couldn't do anything without it taking forever. Minimising windows, opening device manager or even opening process explorer took minutes and a game install I had just started took nearly 4 hours to complete. When procexp finally loaded, the refresh was so slow that it was mostly useless. From what I could gather, it was reporting 60% idle processes with procexp using nearly 40%. There were no hardware interrupts listed. When I rebooted, the problem went away for about 10 minutes and then the same thing happened. The issue persists in safe mode and even after I removed the graphics drivers, which have been an issue in the past, it still happens. Icons flash quite quickly on the desktop periodically and screen refresh is painfully slow. When booting now, the fans kick in to full as soon as the windows logon box comes up and it's taking 10 minutes to bring the desktop up. Chkdsk reports nothing and the raid check says that everything is fine. I'm thinking hardware failure, probably HDD but wanted some other opinions. I'm planning to try a linux live cd to see if it works without using the hard disks. If anyone has any input, it would be greatly appreciated. Delenda

Three of those computers are MACs The rest are windows (1 vista, 4 win7 and 2 XPs) I'm very open to what the method should be but you should also consider the follwing: Very limited resources Quite "small" bandwidth (4 MBs for all (download) 0.4 MBs (upload, yep, thats it)- though this might get, a little bit better) One of the main thing to back up would be the mails, considerations: All windows computers use outlook, mainly 2003 There is one mac that uses outlook too (for mac of course - not 2011 yet) We also have to backup the files: Not a huge amount Very few very big files Very organizes (by machine) What I would like is to hear your opinions as to which would be the best method (or combination of methods - preferably one of course) considering. We are not sure what do we need and I'm open to suggestions, though an online (cloud based applications) would be great, remember the the bandwidth is unbearable. Last think to consider, it that we would like to do weekly updates (unless the method is very easy of course). Thanks in advance!! I tried to be as specific as possible, but if anything is needed I'll gladly update, please ask for any clarification needed! Please avoid any answers like upgrade all to windows 7 and throw away your macs :) our's may not be an ideal situation, but it is what it is, and right now, it would be impossible for us to change it for a lot of circumstances.

• Windows 8 Windows Store (Metro/ModernUI) applications not working (just show 'busy' animation or white screen)

  I have a Dell XPS 15 which shipped with Windows 7 x64, which I recently upgraded to Windows 8. The process went surprisingly smoothly (given that this was an upgrade, not a complete re-install), and the system generally seems very stable. However, today I noticed that several of the Windows Store apps don't work: they all behave in the same way, launching but then showing a spinning 'wait' animation indefinitely. This is affecting the standard Microsoft Mail, Store, Weather, News, Travel, Finance, Sport, Games and Music apps. The Bing app just shows a Bing logo on a coloured background (but no wait animation). The Calendar, Photos and SkyDrive apps open but then show a white screen. The Maps and Camera apps work without problems. The live tiles on the Start screen are updating correctly, for example the Mail app's tile shows a summary of new mail despite the Mail app's problems. All of these applications were working correctly a few days ago. I'm sure I've used several without problems since the last Windows update occurred on 7th November. Any suggestions on what might have happened and/or how to fix it would be very welcome. I don't need these Windows Store applications, but the fact that they're not working is irritating me.

• Sudden "No Signal" in HDMI-DVI connection

  Yesterday I have connected external display Asus VW192C to my laptop Dell XPS 14-L421X via HDMI-to-DVI-D cable. And it worked perfectly fine from start. The day after, Asus screen went blank showing "No signal". Every time I connection/disconnection cable or power off/on the display it says "No signal". And I didn't change any system configurations meanwhile. To troubleshoot the problem, I have tried to connect laptop to TV (hdmi-to-hdmi) - it was fine. I've tried to connect a different laptop to the display via the same cable - worked fine as well. So its obviously something on system level, either Windows or graphics drivers. Also it seems that Windows still see the external display (I can move mouse pointer away from the main screen in Extended mode), but there's just no signal. Any ideas? What else to try? PS. My laptop has 2 graphics cards - GeForce 630M and Intel HD 4000 using NVidia Optimus technology. I have updated to latest Intel and NVidia drivers, still didn't help. PPS. Although I shouldn't have updated (from Intel support): "our Intel generic graphics drivers from the Intel website do not support using both Intel Graphics 4000 and NVidia GeForece GT630M". Nevertheless, it should not affect connectivity to additional display.

• What could possibly cause my computer to power down at random times?

  I have recently bought a new Power Supply and a new graphics card. My PC ran smoothly for a few months now but since a couple of days I'm having a strange problem. I am trying to isolate the problem to a specific piece of hardware (because if it's either the Power Supply or the Graphics card they are still under warranty). The problem started when I was playing a game (diablo 3). My PC suddenly powered down. I was unable to turn it on again by pressing the power button. I unplugged the power cable for a few seconds and plugged it back in. This time the pc powered on but the indication light turned orange instead of white as it normally does. The fans were not spinning and I did not see anything on my screen. After trying a couple of times I gave up. Two days later I tried again and this time the PC did boot up as usual. Everything looked okay until I tested if the problem was resolved by starting Diablo again. After about two minutes it powered down again as it did the first time. If I don't run any games my PC does power down after about 3-5 hours. Another fact that might be relevant: One time the PC did not shut down immediatly, instead first my graphics "powered down" but the music I was playing kept on playing. After about 20 seconds the pc powered down completely as usual. What I also noticed is that when I boot instantly after a power down, the chance of another power down occuring is much higher. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this kind of behaviour or has a certain tool to diagnose the specific hardware parts? • Windows 7 Upgrade Fail from Home Premium to Ultimate Professional

  I had a hard drive crash, which meant I had to install a new HDD in my Dell 64-Bit XPS 1350 (lovely computer). I had previously been running Windows 7 Ultimate Professional which I had upgraded from the OEM Win 7 Home Premium by means of a disk I purchased from my university. Using the Recovery disk from Dell I installed Windows 7 Home Premium successfully on the new hard drive, but when I have tried to upgrade via my disk to Ultimate it installs the whole thing, says its complete, but when I reboot, tells me: "This version of Windows could not be installed. Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it." I've installed the drivers from Dell's driver disk, but still to no avail. I've also used Driver Robot to update all my drivers. I can't find a .dmp file anywhere under C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources but I did find this file under C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther. setupact.log https://www.dropbox.com/s/yzy7fhkxlzc235y/setupact.log If anyone could please advise me what I need to do to fix Windows so it will upgrade properly, I would greatly appreciate it.

• My new laptop - with a really nice battery option

  It was about time I got a new laptop, and so I made a phone-call to Dell to discuss my options. I decided not to get an SSD from them, because I’d rather choose one myself – the sales guy tells me that changing the HD doesn’t void my warranty, so that’s good (incidentally, I’d love to hear people’s recommendations for which SSD to get for my laptop). Unfortunately this machine only has one HD slot, but I figure that I’ll put lots of stuff onto external disks anyway. The machine I got was a Dell Studio XPS 16. It’s red (which suits my company), but also has the Intel® Core™ i7-820QM Processor, which is 4 Cores/8 Threads. Makes for a pretty Task Manager, but nothing like the one I saw at SQLBits last year (at 96 cores), or the one that my good friend James Rowland-Jones writes about here. But the reason for this post is actually something in the software that comes with the machine – you know, the stuff that most people uninstall at the earliest opportunity. I had just reinstalled the operating system, and was going through the utilities to get the drivers up-to-date, when I noticed that one of Dell applications included an option to disable battery charging. So I installed it. And sure enough, I can tell the battery not to charge now. Clearly Dell see it as a temporary option, and one that’s designed for when you’re on a plane. But for me, I most often use my laptop with the power plugged in, which means I don’t need to have my battery continually topping itself up. So I really love this option, but I feel like it could go a little further. I’d like “Not Charging” to be the default option, and let me set it when I want to charge it (which should theoretically make my battery last longer). I also intend to work out how this option works, so that I can script it and put it into my StartUp options (so it can be the Default setting). Actually – if someone has already worked this out and can tell me what it does, then please feel free to let me know. Even better would be an external switch. I had a switch on my old laptop (a Dell Latitude) for WiFi, so that I could turn that off before I turned on the computer (this laptop doesn’t give me that option – no physical switch for flight mode). I guess it just means I’ll get used to leaving the WiFi off by default, and turning it on when I want it – might save myself some battery power that way too. Soon I’ll need to take the plunge and sync my iPhone with the new laptop. I’m a little worried that I might lose something – Apple’s messages about how my stuff will be wiped and replaced with what’s on the PC doesn’t fill me with confidence, as it’s a new PC that doesn’t have stuff on it. But having a new machine is definitely a nice experience, and one that I can recommend. I’m sure when I get around to buying an SSD I’ll feel like it’s shiny and new all over again! • No more internet connection after update in 14.04 with Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260

  My Dell XPS 15 (haswell) was working fine until I stupidly accepted recently to apply Ubuntu updates. Since then, my wifi does not work (it shows "device not managed" when clicking wifi icon in toolbar). Even USB to Ethernet adapter does not seem to work. Bluetooth at least "sees" other bluetooth devices around... • DallasXAML.com – A New User Group for Silverlight, WPF, XBAP, etc.

                                   http://DallasXAML.com   I’ve devoted much of last month to starting the DallasXAML User Group.  I finally got back into user group management after 2 years away from leading the Dallas C# SIG.  Now I’m having fun getting a Silverlight/WPF user group going strong for the Dallas / Ft. Worth community.  Our first meeting was March 3rd at the Improving Enterprises offices in North Dallas.  We had about 25 to 35 attendees in the first meeting and it went well.  We covered the most important topic that everyone should understand well – data binding.   So I chose the XAML user group so we can get together for a common group improvement in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area and learn cross-technology information that we can use now.  It is not a lecture hall.  The great thing is that we’ll provide hands-on experience with most every meeting.  The goal is to get the experience that we can use the next work day.  I unfortunately broke that rule by speaking all through the first meeting, but next month is part two with more hands-on data binding.   The differentiation is this group concentrates on XAML, not Silverlight or Windows Client alone.  What we learn in one area, we gain for all areas.  That includes the Silverlight for Windows Phone 7 coming later this year.  Next year it may be Windows Phone 8, 9, or whatever.    I started developing WPF seriously almost a year ago.  I experienced the painful learning curve.  Anyone who reports that there isn’t a big learning curve either thinks in XAML before it was developed, is on the Silverlight or WPF development team, or has already conquered the learning and forgot the pain.  So I wanted to share the pain or make it easier for others – same thing.  I have found that the more I learn and use good disciplined techniques, the more interesting and rewarding development is again.   A few months ago, I was sitting in the iPhone development session at the Dallas C# SIG.  After the meeting, the audience was polled for future topics.  After a few suggestions, Silverlight got the big hands up.  That makes sense because it’s still the hot topic for many Microsoft developers.  So I surfed around and found that there aren’t enough user groups to help in this area.  I polled a few local group leaders and did the work to start the group.  This week I got a telerik controls licence and improved the site with some great controls, namely the RadHtmlPlaceholder control.  It provides a Silverlight control to show HTML in an IFrame-like area.  On DallasXAML.com, the newsletters and resource pages display in HTML because Silverlight just isn’t there yet.  I’m looking forward to a Silverlight XPS viewer with flow documents.  There are some good commercial version available, but this is a non-profit group.    The DallasXAML.com site points to many other resources such as podcasts and webcasts.  I would rather give them the credit than try to out-do them.  So check out the DallasXAML user group site and attend our meetings if you can.  We meet the first Tuesday of the month.   -Vince DallasXAML User Group Leader

• ubuntu 10.04: wlan0 No such device

  I am using a Dell xps l702x and I am using ubuntu 10.04 because I need to use f77 (don't ask) and I wasn't able to get it working on later versions of ubuntu. I cannot use the wifi at all. I have tried to fix it and have had limited success (changed the output from rfkill list all from Hard blocked: yes, to hard blocked: no). • How to know why an animation stutters?

  I have a few fairly simple animations (moving text around, moving ellipses etc.) and running in full screen (1920x1080 minus the task bar) the WPF Performance Suite reports a good framerate around 50 FPS throughout the animation. Dirty Rect Addition is somewhere around 300 rect/s, the SW frames are between 0 and 4 and the HW frames are between 3 and 5. Video memory usage is around 80 MB. Problem is that the animations stutters every other half second. My machine is a new Dell laptop XPS 15 with the GeForce GT 435 with 2GB memory. - The drivers are up to date. (The same behavior occurs on my netbook (in full screen) as well so I don't think it is hardware related.) If I make the window smaller the stutter goes away. The stutter occurs with the simplest of animations - even with just a couple of elements but adding more elements certainly makes it more noticeable. How can I find out what causes this stutter? When I think of it, I have not actually seen any WPF animations which run smoothly in full screen. Is this even possible?
