• Ubuntu hangs frequently

  I have an Athlon x2 7750, 2GB RAM and I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on 8Gb moser baer pen drive. Software I installed are: apache2, php5, mysql-server, mysql-workbench, komodo-edit, anjuta. I also wanted gimp but I stopped. Problem is Ubuntu stops responding after 3-4 minute and start responding again for 3-4 minutes. and this continues. I'm use Windows 7 and do not know much about Linux, I wanted to install it on my hard disk. Can community help me on how to get smooth Ubuntu???

• Coming back from (blog) retirement

  So, it has been more than 3 years without a single blog post. I wished I could have a decent excuse for it, but in the end, I guess it boils down to laziness and procrastination. :-) Even though I learned a lot in that period (and added a feel tricks to my bag), I couldn’t find the will to sit down and write. I hope all my readers (yes mom and dad, I’m talking to you) have not been disappointed. I will try really hard not to let routine take over. I don’t expect I will be the most active blogger in the community, but hopefully a couple of posts per month is a good target to aim.

• A Change of Seasons...

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able! • atheros wireless ar9285 driver

  I have been having problems with wireless on Ubuntu 10 and above, Mint 11 and above. The problem is in the driver for the wireless... I can see that there is no driver installed and yet it works but reduced a lot, for example: on windows 7 ultimate 100% on distance of 1 meter (currently running) Mint Cinnamon 15 on same distance 70% when it goes under the 40 % it simply disconnects and than takes a lot of time to connect again I am new to Linux and I don't know anything about programming, yet I love the interface and look of the OS but don't want to reject it for couple of problems. There is, however, a problem with brightness control on laptop, it shows the notification and slider but with no effect The question is: Can somebody explain to me where to download and how to install the ar9285 driver for atheros wireless card laptop acer emachines eme529? or can someone explain this to me only for the LINUX MINT 15 http://www.jrhenkelmann.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34 because the synaptic's interface is different than of mint 15 I KNOW this is Ubuntu community but the problems persist in all Linux versions

• One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great

  It has been a week since we moved our Geekswithblogs.net System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great.  I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware.  On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers.  I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in.  This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends that we will be announcing shortly.  We will be launching a nice little contest for our bloggers as well. • Is an in-app purchase required to unlock game in order to bypass pirating acceptable?

  I'm considering writing a mobile game and looking at distribution. The game will have a server requirement, which means I will have to pay for bandwidth, hosting, processor time, etc. Because of that I'll need to make at least a little money off this thing. According to the press piracy is rampant in the android community. To get around this, I'm thinking of implementing a simple model where the game is free, perhaps allowing play for X number of turns or something, and then requiring an in-app purchase to continue to play. I would clearly explain this in the app description, and the in-app purchase would be managed per account so it would be linked to your google play account so you wouldn't have to re-purchase every time you get a new device. Would gamers accept this model or see it as unreasonable?

• MacBook 5,1 - cant change brightness on 12.04

  I'm a total newbie to Ubuntu and recently decided to give it a go on my early 2009 Alu MacBook. For about a week now I've been trying to get the brightness controls to work. I've tried the following: Brightness controls doesn't work on a MacBook Pro 5.5 (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro5-5/Precise#LCD None of it seems to work. Next option was to try the Nvidia-bl-dkms drivers, but aftert installing the Mactel PPA I just get this: Reading package lists... DoneBuilding dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package nvidia-bl-dkms Any help would be much appreciated as my eyes are going to fall out soon with the brightness maxed out.

• PAE on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having trouble using PAE on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit. I recently upgraded from 4 to 8gb of RAM but PAE doesn't appear to have picked this up. When I run "grep --color=always -i PAE /proc/cpuinfo" I get pae in the list. When I run "dmidecode | grep Size | grep MB" Installed Size is 3825 but the Maximum Total Memory Size: 8192 MB. When I check the BIOS it says there is 8192 MB available and the computer fully supports I have followed everything I can find on the internet (including this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE) and nothing is working. My Computer is a Toshiba Portege m750. It has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor. Bought in 2009 Thanks, JamesStewy

• Are there statistics or time series of open bugs in Ubuntu?

  I would like to know how the number of bugs in Ubuntu (open, closed, critical, etc) has evolved with time. It's a sort of scientific curiosity I have, but it would also give me a feeling how the community has changed over time, how it has coped with the challenges (I think of Unity in particular) and what's its status now. Has anyone collected these data over the years? If yes, are they publicly available? I know this information can be gathered from Launchpad itself and actually I found a website that had data from mid 2008 to early 2009. I found Ubuntu live stats, which shows live messages related to Ubuntu, but does not aggregate bug statistics. Finally there are some stats on the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter but they only show diffs of bugs closed during the last week.

• GlassFish 4.0 Virtualization Progress - VirtualBox

It walks you through the various VirtualBox (network and services) and GlassFish configuration steps including the creation of VDI templates (typically JeOS images) to finally create a virtual machine on the fly, as part of the typical GlassFish deployment process. • Disqus 2012 comments NOT being indexed by Google

  We run a high-traffic website at http://www.onedirection.net and we've been using Disqus throughout this year, initially to great effect. We accepted the upgrade to Disqus 2012 back in June, loving the increased user experience and the better community feel - albeit back to an Iframe again. However the fact we were specifically told that the comments are now being indexed by Google was great, and the dynamic nature of the iFrame suited our site (all our pages are cached, so by using Disqus the comments are updated straight away). However, it seems that the Disqus 2012 comments are not being indexed, and we've noticed an obvious fall in traffic over the last few months. Initially we didn't put this down to Disqus and focused on other issues (Google algorithm updates etc). But we're quickly coming down the reasoning that our pages now contain less indexable text, and we are getting less traffic because of this. We've tried emailing Disqus directly but they're very slow and don't seem keen to help. Any thoughts on this?
