• Xaml not WPF

  I am interested in using Xaml with expression blend for creating user interfaces in an application. However, because of the limitations of the target architecture, I cannot use WPF or C#. So, what I am interested in is in any examples / existing projects or advice from anyone who has experiance of this technology on the use of Xaml in it's "Pure" form as a specification language not tied to WPF. Specific questions: 1) Is it possible to use Blend + Xaml without the WPF elements, or without C# backing classes? 2) Are there any other implementations of Xaml parsers etc. which use different architectures, and can they work with blend or similar tools. 3) Are there alternative editor / designer tools which can help in this situation? I am aware of the MyXaml and MycroXaml projects, and have found a lot of resources on the web about Xaml, but 99% of it relates directly to WPF. This is fine for understanding the concepts of Xaml, but doesn't help with the implimentation I need. Many thanks!

• C#, UTF-8 and encoding characters

  This is a shot-in-the-dark, and I apologize in advance if this question sounds like the ramblings of a madman. As part of an integration with a third party, I need to UTF8-encode some string info using C# so I can send it to the target server via multipart form. The problem is that they are rejecting some of my submissions, probably because I'm not encoding their contents correctly. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how a dash or hyphen -- I can't tell which it is just by looking at it -- is received or interpreted by the target server as ?~@~S (yes, that's a 5-character string and is not your browser glitching out). And unfortunately I don't have a thorough enough understanding of Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes() to know how to use the byte array to begin identifying where the problem might lie. If anybody can provide any tips or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. So far my only friend has been MSDN, and not much of one at that.

• What considerations should be made for a web app to be released on a cloud hosted system?

  I have a web app that is primarily a WordPress app, but it pulls content from a Django app, simply by calling a service that uses Django models. My understanding of cloud computing is a bit vague. If the site needs to scale up with short notice, does the cloud provider (Amazon, Rackspace, whomever) simply spin up new instances (copies) of my initially configured server? How is state managed between all of them? Are there any good primers on this subject? It's hard to find much out there without getting caught up in the marketing.

• I dont understand how Westpac Payway API and NET works

  Been googling all day, reading numerous pdf's and still getting confused with the concepts of sending data to Payway system from Westpac (bank in Australia, link text). They offer access via API but also give access via what they call NET. The way I understand is that when client want to pay on my website, in case of NET, client gets to the page (hosted by a bank or hosted by me) where is provided with form to enter credit card info details. Then this form is submitted via normal POST call to Payway's specific https address. It is processed then and browser returns to url I specified as one of the parameters I sent in hidden field. In case of API story is similar, so user receives form, fills in the data and then data is send to my backend (not Payway's). My backend then calls payway API with data provided and once answer received returns confirmation page to the client. Is my understanding right? Please explain as I have a feeling I am missing something basic here.

• EXC_BAD_ACCESS when not using self.

  I got nabbed by the following bug again and would like some clarification to exactly why it is a bug. I have a simple UITableView that loads some data: // myclass.h @property (nonatomic, retain) NSArray *myData // myclass.m @synthesize myData; - (void) viewDidLoad { ... myData = someDataSource // note the lack of self } - (UITableViewCell *) cellForRowAtIndexPath ... { ... cell.textLabel.text = [self.myData objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; // EXC_BAD_ACCESS } The table first loads fine, but when scrolling up enough that one of the cells is totally out of the view I then get the EXC_BAD_ACCESS error. Am I missing something in regards to @property retain. My understanding is that it releases anything that the pointer was previously pointing to before the reassignment. If I am correct then why would not using self. cause any problems? Thanks for the help.

  Hello everyone, In my previous understanding, for a web site, only login user of a web site (no matter what login/authentication approach is used) could have cookie as persistent identifier, so that if the user close the browser, open browser again to go to the same web site, the web site could remember the user. But I learned recently that it seems for non-login user, there could still be a cookie associated with the user (after the user close browser, and then open the browser again to go to the same web site, the web site could remember the user), and it is called browser cookie? Is that true? If it is true, who is responsible to set the browser cookie? i.e. need some coding/config at web server side, client browser configuration (without coding from server side), or both? How could web server access such cookie? Appreciate if any code samples. thanks in advance, George

• Specification: Use cases for CRUD

  I am writing a Product requirements specification. In this document I must describe the ways that the user can interact with the system in a very high level. Several of these operations are "Create-Read-Update-Delete" on some objects. The question is, when writing use cases for these operations, what is the right way to do so? Can I write only one Use Case called "Manage Object x" and then have these operations as included Use Cases? Or do I have to create one use case per operation, per object? The problem I see with the last approach is that I would be writing quite a few pages that I feel do not really contribute to the understanding of the problem. What is the best practice?

• How does one capture H.323 voice traffic on a VOIP network?

  What I am trying to do is capture the WAV data of a phone conversation on a VOIP network using SharpPCap/PCap.Net. We are using the H.323 recommendation and my understanding is that voice data is located in the RTP packets. However, there is no way to heuristically determine if a UDP packet is a RTP packet, so we have to do more work before we can capture the data. The H.323 recommendation apparently uses a lot of traffic on specific TCP ports to negotiate the call before the WAV data is sent via RTP. However, I am having very little luck determining what data is actually sent on those TCP ports, when it is sent, what the packets look like, how to handle it, etc. If anyone has any information on how to go about this I'd really appreciate it. My Google-Fu seems to be failing me on this one.

Yet the anchor link href is rendered as "YourFeedback/Article/resourceId=101". Any ideas where I'm going wrong? Thanks in advance.

  My website is organized in the following folder structure Root Pages CustomerManagement DepartMentManagement Script UserControls Now i have a user control inside userControl Folder. I have to use a external js file. So i use it this way <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript" src="../Script/slider.js"></script> My understanding is that since both are under root so i have used a single .. Now what happens is that when this usercontrol is used inside DepartMentManagement it checks for script folder inside CustomerManagement as .. refers to one hierarchy above and script file is not found.Even using a ~ doesnot work. I want to make this script path independent of the path where this control is used. I don't want to move script reference code to the page as control requires script mot page.Please tell me how to achieve this.

• XSLT: How to escape square brackets in Urls

  I have a set of records from Solr where field[@name='url'] can have the following format: http://url/blabla/blabla.aspx?sv=[keyword%20keyword,%201] My understanding is that the square brackets denote an array syntax and I would like to use XSLT to remove the square brackets from all Urls. The reason for this is that I am using an Open URL resolver, which does not currently handle well those characters. The best option would be to strip the square brackets from all URLs before such resources are mediated by the Open URL resolver. There are cases where I have multiple occurrences of square brackets per Url. Can you please help me with this? Thanks for your help, I.

• Nothing = String.Empty (Why are these equal?)

  I find it very puzzling that null equals String.Empty in VB.NET. There must be an explanation for it that I'm not understanding. Somehow, when the equality of String.Empty (which has an object type of string) is tested against Nothing (which has no type) the test returns true. It just seems like a turn around in logic to me. In SQL if I were to compare an empty char or varchar against a null value, the test wouldn't return true. A null value is not the same as an empty string in this case. Yet in VB.NET they are equal. I'd love it if someone could provide a good explanation around this.

• JPanel: both implementing my own paintComponent() and rendering children doesn't work

  I'm extending a JPanel to display a game board, and adding a JEditorPane at the bottom to hold some status text. Unfortunately, the game board renders just fine, but the JEditorPane is just a blank gray area until I highlight the text in it, when it will render whatever text is highlighted (but not the rest). If I'm understanding Swing right, it should work, because super.paintComponent(g) should render the other children (i.e., the JEditorPane). • What exactly is a Monad?

  Can someone please explain to me what a Monad is. I think I grasp Monoids and I grasp that they basically control the input of state into a system. I just look at the text in Haskell and glaze over. A simple example in python would be great. My current understanding is that a Monoid is a procedural piece of code that needs to be read from top to bottom in sequence with the output being the input for the function. I think that I may even got that wrong, but hey I am here to learn.

  I am in the early stages of rearchitecting my company's application. The app is currently running on symfony 1.2, and I used the default ORM at the time, Propel. Symfony has since updated to 1.4 and switched default ORM to Doctrine. From my understanding, each ORM excels at particular types of database structures. Is this true or is one far and away better than the other? Are there any good methods to test which ORM would be best in my situation in a test environment using my schema (i.e.- set up dual, identical sites and run tests)?

  I have the following problem that needs to be solved in a MySQL query: Fields info - textfield date1 - a date field date2 - a date field offset1 - a text field with a number in the first two positions, example "10-High" offset2 - a text field with a number in the first two positions, example "10-High" I need to sort the records by the calculated "sortvalue" based on the current date (today): If today=date2 then sortvalue=offset1*10+offset2*5+1000 else sortvalue=offset1*10+offset2*5 I have quite good understanding of basic SQL with joins etc, but this I am not even sure if its possible...if it helps I could perhaps live with a single formula giving the same sort of effect as the IFs do....ie. before date1 = low value, after date2 = high value...   We're investigating a coding pattern in C# in which we'd like to use a "using" clause with a special class, whose Dispose() method does different things depending on whether the "using" body was exited normally or with an exception. To the best of my understanding, the CLR keeps track of the current exception being handled until it's been consumed by a "catch" handler. However it's not entirely clear whether this information is exposed in any way for the code to access. Do you know whether it is, and if so, how to access it? For example: using (var x = new MyObject()) { x.DoSomething(); x.DoMoreThings(); } class MyObject : IDisposable { public void Dispose() { if (ExceptionIsBeingHandled) Rollback(); else Commit(); } } This looks almost like System.Transactions.TransactionScope, except that success/failure is not determined by a call to x.Complete(), but rather based on whether the using body was exited normally.

So it has pretty big code base and the previous developers knew it well, so extending it is not going to be easy without a thorough understanding of the structure and function. 1) I had begun by trying to tackle small parts of the system and document them with mindmap.   Good Day, I have tried, and burned my brain to understand the definition of Regular Languages in Discrete Mathematics and its Applications(Rosen) without reaching the goal of understanding why the definition is like that in this book. On page(789), I am rephrasing the definition: Type 3 grammars are defined as: w1 --> w2 Where w1 is a non-terminal, and w2 is of the form: w2 = aB w2 = a Where B is a non-terminal, and a is a terminal. A special case is when w1 is the starting symbol and w2 is lambda(the empty string): w1 = S S --> lambda Two questions I couldn't find an answer for. First, Why can't w2 be of the form Ba. Second, Why lambda is only allowed for the starting symbol only. The book states that, regular languages are equivalent to Finite State Automaton, and we can easily see that a we can build FSA for both cases. I took a look at other resources, and these restrictions don't exist in these resources. Thanks,

  Is there any site from where I can get the most of the information about WCF configuration settings e.g. keyEntropyMode,maxStatefulNegotiations,sessionKeyRolloverInterval, negotiationTimeout etc. I have started recently working in wcf but is facing many troubles in understanding the terms. There are to be honest huge. And whenever I get stuck, it takes a long time for me to solve it (searching and searching in google and after spending sometime hours I may get the solution).   I'm reviewing my notes for my course on theory of computation and I'm having trouble understanding how to complete a certain proof. Here is the question: A = {0^n 1^m 0^n | n>=1, m>=1} Prove that A is not regular. It's pretty obvious that the pumping lemma has to be used for this. So, we have |vy| = 1 |vxy| <= p (p being the pumping length, = 1) uv^ixy^iz exists in A for all i = 0 Trying to think of the correct string to choose seems a bit iffy for this. I was thinking 0^p 1^q 0^p, but I don't know if I can obscurely make a q, and since there is no bound on u, this could make things unruly.. So, how would one go about this?
