• Calculate shortest path through a grocery store

  Hi, I'm trying to find a way to find the shortest path through a grocery store, visiting a list of locations (shopping list). The path should start at a specified startposition and can end at multiple endpositions (there are multiple checkout counters). Also, I have some predefined constraints on the path, such as "item x on the shopping list needs to be the last, second last, or third last item on the path". There is a function that will return true or false for a given path. Finally, this needs to be calculated with limited cpu power (on a smartphone) and within a second or so. If this isn't possible, then an approximation to the optimal path is also ok. Is this possible? So far I think I need to start by calculating the distance between every item on the list using something like A* or Dijkstra's. After that, should I treat it like the travelling salesman problem? Because in my problem there is a specified startnode, specified endnodes, and some constraints, which are not in the travelling salesman problem. Any help would be appreciated :)

• Map element position in data file to class property

  I need to read/write files, following a format provided by a third party specification. The specification itself is pretty simple: it says the position and the size of the data that will be saved in the file. For example: Position Size Description -------------------------------------------------- 0001 10 Device serial number 0011 02 Hour 0013 02 Minute 0015 02 Second 0017 02 Day 0019 02 Month 0021 02 Year The list is very long, it has about 400 elements. But lots of them can be combined. For example, hour, minute, second, day, month and year can be combined in a single DateTime object. I've splitted the elements into about 4 categories, and created separeted classes for holding the data. So, instead of a big structure representing the data, I have some smaller classes. I've also created different classes for reading and writing the data. The problem is: how to map the positions in the file to the objects properties, so that I don't need to repeat the values in the reading/writing class? I could use some custom attributes and retrieve them via reflection. But since the code will be running on devices with small memory and processor, it would be nice to find another way. • How to implement Session timeout in Web Server Side?

  I beheld a web framework implementing in-memory session in this way. The session object is added to Cache with timeout. When the time is out, the session is removed from Cache automatically. To protect race condition, each request should acquire lock on given session object to proceed. Each request will "touch" the session in Cache to refresh the timeout. Everything looks fine, until this scenario is discovered. Say, one operation takes a long time, longer than timeout. Another request comes and wait on session lock which is currently hold by the long-time request. Finally, the long-time request is over, it releases the lock. But, since it already takes longer time than timeout, the session object is already removed from Cache. This is obvious because the only request holding the lock doesn't have a chance to "touch" the session object in cache. The second request gets the lock but cannot retrieve the expired Session object. Oops... To fix this issue, the second request has to re-create the Session object. But, this is just like digging a buried dead body from tomb and try to bring it back to life. It causes buggy code. I'm wondering what's the best way to implement timeout in session to handle such scenario. I know that current platform must have good session mechanism. I just want to know the under-the-hood how.

• Problem with JMX query of Coherence node MBeans visible in JConsole

  I'm using JMX to build a custom tool for monitoring remote Coherence clusters at work. I'm able to connect just fine and query MBeans directly, and I've acquired nearly all the information I need. However, I've run into a snag when trying to query MBeans for specific caches within a cluster, which is where I can find stats about total number of gets/puts, average time for each, etc. The MBeans I'm trying to access programatically are visible when I connect to the remote process using JConsole, and have names like this: Coherence:type=Cache,service=SequenceQueue,name=SEQ%GENERATOR,nodeId=1,tier=back It would make it more flexible if I can dynamically grab all type=Cache MBeans for a particular node ID without specifying all the caches. I'm trying to query them like this: QueryExp specifiedNodeId = Query.eq(Query.attr("nodeId"), Query.value(nodeId)); QueryExp typeIsCache = Query.eq(Query.attr("type"), Query.value("Cache")); QueryExp cacheNodes = Query.and(specifiedNodeId, typeIsCache); ObjectName coherence = new ObjectName("Coherence:*"); Set<ObjectName> cacheMBeans = mBeanServer.queryMBeans(coherence, cacheNodes); However, regardless of whether I use queryMBeans() or queryNames(), the query returns a Set containing... ...0 objects if I pass the arguments shown above ...0 objects if I pass null for the first argument ...all MBeans in the Coherence:* domain (112) if I pass null for the second argument ...every single MBean (128) if I pass null for both arguments The first two results are the unexpected ones, and suggest a problem in the QueryExp I'm passing, but I can't figure out what the problem is. I even tried just passing typeIsCache or specifiedNodeId for the second parameter (with either coherence or null as the first parameter) and I always get 0 results. I'm pretty green with JMX — any insight on what the problem is? (FYI, the monitoring tool will be run on Java 5, so things like JMX 2.0 won't help me at this point.)

• Visual Studio 2008 "Save File As" Dialog Intermittent Issue

  Me and a few of my coworkers are experiencing an odd issue in Visual Studio 2008 and Windows 7 (64-bit). We use VSS6 for our source control (unfortunately). We have an issue where we will make a change to a checked-out file, resulting in the file getting checked out as expected. But when we go to build the project, or try to save the file, it will often (but not always) prompt us with the "Save File As" dialog, as if VS thinks the file is checked-in (and thus has the read-only flag set). However, all we have to do is cancel out of the dialog and save or build again, and it will always work the second time, without prompting the save as dialog. Or, we can go through with the save as, leaving the name the same, and it will work. It's as if the source control status in VS2008 hasn't caught up w/ VSS (even though we VS2008 was the app that checked the file out). This is similar to the discussion on this thread, but it's not an issue of permissions or running as administrator, 1) because it resolves itself on second attempt, and 2) we're already running VS as administrator.   Can you pass in an operation like "divide by 2" or "subtract 1" using just a partially applied operator, where "add 1" looks like this: List.map ((+) 1) [1..5];; //equals [2..6] // instead of having to write: List.map (fun x-> x+1) [1..5] What's happening is 1 is being applied to (+) as it's first argument, and the list item is being applied as the second argument. For addition and multiplication, this argument ordering doesn't matter. Suppose I want to subtract 1 from every element (this will probably be a common beginners mistake): List.map ((-) 1) [1..5];; //equals [0 .. -4], the opposite of what we wanted 1 is applied to the (-) as its first argument, so instead of (list_item - 1), I get (1 - list_item). I can rewrite it as adding negative one instead of subtracting positive one: List.map ((+) -1) [1..5];; List.map (fun x -> x-1) [1..5];; // this works too I'm looking for a more expressive way to write it, something like ((-) _ 1), where _ denotes a placeholder, like in the Arc language. This would cause 1 to be the second argument to -, so in List.map, it would evaluate to list_item - 1. So if you wanted to map divide by 2 to the list, you could write: List.map ((/) _ 2) [2;4;6] //not real syntax, but would equal [1;2;3] List.map (fun x -> x/2) [2;4;6] //real syntax equivalent of the above Can this be done or do I have to use (fun x -> x/2)? It seems that the closest we can get to the placeholder syntax is to use a lambda with a named argument.

However, I need it to be formatted in M:S format. So, my two questions: 1) What can I use instead of animate to take care of the loop yet maintain the callback 2) How (where in the code should I) can I play with the time format? Thanks.

What am wondering is if there is a faster way for me to calculate the hash of the file? Maybe by doing some multithreading? I used a another script to check the use of the CPU second by second and I see that my code is only using 1 out of my 2 CPUs and only at 25% max, any way I can change this?   Hi, I've been looking at adding iCal support to my new application and everything seemed just fine and worked on my Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard development machine without a hitch. I have two tables, first is ws3600, which holds columns (Date, PressureREL, TemperatureOUT, Dewpoint, ...). Then I have second table, called maxday, which holds columns like DatePressureREL, PressureREL, DateTemperatureOUT, TemperatureOUT,... Now as you can see from an example, I update each column, the question is, is there a faster way? I am asking this, because I am calling MAX twice, first to find the Date for that value and secondly to find the actual value. Now I know that I could write like that: SELECT Date, PressureREL FROM ws3600 WHERE PressureREL = (SELECT MAX(PressureREL) FROM ws3600 WHERE Date >= '" + Date + "') AND Date >= '" + Date + "' ORDER BY Date DESC LIMIT 1 That way I get the Date of the max and the max value at the same time and then update with those values the data in maxday table. But the problem of this solution is, that I have to execute many queries, which as I understand takes alot more time compared to executing one long mysql query because of overhead in sending each query to the server. If there is no better way, which solution beetwen this two should I choose. The first, which only takes one query but is very unoptimized or the second which is beter in terms of optimization, but needs alot more queries which probably means that the preformance gain is lost because of overhead in sending each query to the server?

• C# - parse content away from structure in a binary file

  Using C#, I need to read a packed binary file created using FORTRAN. The file is stored in an "Unformatted Sequential" format as described here (about half-way down the page in the "Unformatted Sequential Files" section): http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/services/userguides/intel8/fc/f_ug1/pggfmsp.htm As you can see from the URL, the file is organized into "chunks" of 130 bytes or less and includes 2 length bytes (inserted by the FORTRAN compiler) surrounding each chunk. So, I need to find an efficient way to parse the actual file payload away from the compiler-inserted formatting. Once I've extracted the actual payload from the file, I'll then need to parse it up into its varying data types. That'll be the next exercise. My first thoughts are to slurp up the entire file into a byte array using File.ReadAllBytes. Then, just iterate through the bytes, skipping the formatting and transferring the actual data to a second byte array. In the end, that second byte array should contain the actual file contents minus all the formatting, which I'd then need to go back through to get what I need. As I'm fairly new to C#, I thought there might be a better, more accepted way of tackling this. Also, in case it's helpful, these files could be fairly large (say 30MB), though most will be much smaller...

  I have a series of DIVS, I want DIV 1 & DIV 3 to fade out and then DIV 2 and DIV 4 to slide left to take their place, 1 second after the fade. So far I have gotten them to fade out but I cannot figure out how to delay the sliding. • Finding intersection of two spheres

  Hi, Consider the following problem - I am given 2 links of length L0 and L1. P0 is the point that the first link starts at and P1 is the point that I want the end of second link to be at in 3-D space. I am supposed to write a function that should take in these 3-D points (P0 and P1) as inputs and should find all configurations of the links that put the second link's end point at P1. My understanding of how to go about it is - Each link L0 and L1 will create a sphere S0 and S1 around itself. I should find out the intersection of those two spheres (which will be a circle) and print all points that are on the circumference of that circle. I saw gmatt's first reply on the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1406375/finding-intersection-points-between-3-spheres but could not understand it properly since the images did not show up. I also saw a formula for finding out the intersection at mathworld[dot]wolfram[dot]com/Sphere-SphereIntersection[dot]html . I could find the radius of intersection by the method given on mathworld. Also I can find the center of that circle and then use the parametric equation of circle to find the points. The only doubt that I have is will this method work for the points P0 and P1 mentioned above ? Please comment and let me know your thoughts.

• How to get around the event bubble using jQuery's: .live()

Here is the code in question: $(".navItems>ul>li").live('click', function(){ var selectorID = $(this).attr('id'); $(".infoList").slideUp('fast', function(){ switchTabInfo(selectorID); }); function switchTabInfo(selectorID){ var actionID = selectorID.substring(4); actionID = "#" + actionID; $(actionID).slideDown(); } So in short i have a these .infoList classes with id names tied to back to the nav li id. That lists item's id might be nav_testsHistory for example. With all the content boxes hidden by class name this javascript makes a pleasing slide up, down effect. But the third content box flickers as will the second one after a third box push. It slides up and down a second unnecessary time. If I add an alert like this: $(".navItems>ul>li").live('click', function(){ var selectorID = $(this).attr('id'); $(".infoList").slideUp('fast', function(){ switchTabInfo(selectorID); alert('bubble'); }); The alert fires 3 times?! So my research took to reading about the event bubble. What I cannot find is how to check if it has been fired. I have not tried setting an input val and doing a tf test around the nested slider action. Cause that's crude. More info, all the code above is in a function, which is in an init() function, which is called on document ready. That's the only js file besides jquery 1.3.2. What do you guys think?

• Why does 12:20 PM parse to 0:20 on the next day?

  I'm using java.text.SimpleDateFormat to parse string representations of date/time values inside an XML document. I'm seeing all times that have an hour value of 12 shifted by 12 hours into the future, i. e. 20 minutes past noon gets parsed to mean 20 minutes past midnight the following day. I wrote a unit test which seems to confirm that the error is made upon parsing (I checked the return values from getTime() with the linux shell command date). Now I'm wondering: is there a bug in the parse() method? is there something wrong with the input string? am I using the wrong format string for the input? The input data is taken from Yahoo's YWeather service. • Custom listbox sorting

  I need to sort the data contained within a number of listboxes. The user will be able to select between two different types of sorting using radio boxes, one of which is checked by default on form load. I have created the IF statements needed in order to test whether the checked condition is true for that radio button. but i need some help to create the custom sort algorithms. Each list with contain similar looking data, the only difference in the prefix with which each line starts. For example each line in the first listbox starts with the prefix "G30" and the second listbox will be "G31" and so on. There are 10 listboxes in total (G30-G39 in terms of prefixes). The first search algorithm has to sort the lines by the number order of the first 13 chars. Example: This is how the data looks before sorting G35:45:58:11 JG07 G35:45:20:41 JG01 G35:58:20:21 JG03 G35:66:22:20 JG05 G35:45:85:21 JG02 G35:64:56:11 JG03 G35:76:35:11 JG02 G35:77:97:12 JG03 G35:54:29:11 JG01 G35:55:51:20 JG01 G35:76:24:20 JG06 G35:76:55:11 JG01 and this is how it should look after sorting G35:45:20:41 JG01 G35:45:58:11 JG07 G35:45:85:21 JG02 G35:54:29:11 JG01 G35:55:51:20 JG01 G35:58:20:21 JG03 G35:64:56:11 JG03 G35:66:22:20 JG05 G35:76:24:20 JG06 G35:76:35:11 JG02 G35:76:55:11 JG01 G35:77:97:12 JG03 as you can see, the prefixes are the same. so it is sorted, lowest first, by the next pair integers, then the next pair and the next but not by the value after "JG". the second sort algorithm will ignore the first 13 chars and sort by order of the value after "JG", highest first. any help? theres some rep in it for you :) thanks in advance

But the second part of code return error C2440. When i set "Configuration Properties - General Character Set in "Use Unicode" the second part of code work correctly. But the first part of code return the only first character from TCHAR to LPCSTR.

• Aggregating / Collecting AJAX requests

  I have situation where a user can manipulate a large set of data (presented in a table) by using a bunch of filters represented as checkboxes. The page is AJAXed up so the user doesn't have to wait for a full page refresh every time they click a filter. The way it's currently implemented is by having an event handler watch all the checkboxes and request filtered data from the server when a click event is triggered. This works fine. However, there is a usability & performance issue with doing it this way. For example, if a user clicks 6 checkboxes, 6 AJAX requests are triggered and they all come back at various intervals causing the page to be updated 6 times. This will most probably annoy the user and seems rather inefficient. I want to put some kind of timeout on the event handler to do something like this: "Wait for 1 second and if there are no more filters clicked trigger the AJAX request". However, at the moment I've only been able to delay all 6 requests by 1 second. I'm not sure how to aggregate / collect the filter info into 1 AJAX request. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

• Full Text Search in SQL Server 2008 shows wrong display_item for Thai language

  I am working with SQL Server 2008. My task is to investigate the issue where FTS cannot find the right result for Thai. First, I have the table which enables the FTS on the column 'ItemName' which is nvarchar. The Catalog is created with the Thai Language. Note that the Thai language is one of the languages that doesn't separate the word by spaces, so '????' '???' '????' are written like this in a sentence: '???????????' In the table, there are many rows that include the word (????); for example row#1 (ItemName: '???????????') On the webpage, I try to search for '????' but SQL Server cannot find it. So I try to investigate it by trying the following query in SQL Server: select * from sys.dm_fts_parser(N'"???????????"', 1054, 0, 0) ...to see how the words are broken. The first one is the text to be broken. The second parameter is to specify that we're using Thai (WorkBreaker, so on). Here is the result: row#1 (display_item: '????', source_item: '???????????') row#2 (display_item: '????', source_item: '???????????') row#3 (display_item: '??', source_item: '???????????') Notice that the first and second row display the wrong display_item '?' in the '????' isn't even Thai characters. '?' in '????' is not a Thai character either. So the question is where did those alien characters come from? I guess this why I cannot search for '????' because the word breaker is broken and keeping the wrong character in the indexes. Please help!

• Problems with GData Request Token

  We have successfully used GData libraries to access a user's Google Docs. But we encountered problems when many users log in to our site and authorize our web app at the same time or successively. Here's what happens: First user successful logs in, authorizes our web app via OAuth and is able to add rubric (or google spreadsheet). Second user, immediately after first user adds a rubric, successfully logs in then webapp fails on authorize (Token not given. I tried to log it.) Third user fails on login. Fourth user was able to log in, authorize via OAuth, and create rubrics successfully. Fifth user was able to log in but like the second user, gets an invalid token on authorize (Token not given.) And the list goes on. Results were unpredicatable. • mysql prevent displaying a row ONE which has reference in another row TWO but no reference in row THREE

  I have a table like the following id | name | pid 1 | sam | NULL 2 | sams ref | 1 3 | pam | NULL For the first time the first row gets inserted which will have pid as null I insert a row which is related to the first row and then i insert a row which is new and which may be referred by another row in future. now i want only the third row to be displayed and not the first and second row as the second row contains the reference of first row. so if any row has a reference to another row then both the rows should not be displayed. Only rows which is not having any reference should be displayed. BESIDES, IS IT A GOOD PRACTICE? PLEASE ADVICE ON THIS. Edited When i updated in server the query is always giving empty result. here is what i have and this one When pid is NULL then that row should appear but when another entry in the same table with pid as its parent id or any other rows id appears then both the rows should not appear. so if any pid has been referred then both the rows should not appear. here only one row will refer another row and not more than that. in my localhost i have mysql version 5.0.1 or something like that but when i installed xampp in another system it had 5.5 and in the live server it was 5.3 so in version around 5.0 the query is returning rows but in higher versions it is returning empty rows. so now i this case how to make a query?
