• Is "Cleversoft PC Tuneup Maestro" malware?

  I found a desktop icon for something called PC TuneUp Maestro on my parents' laptop. Googling it yields pages upon pages of freeware download sites, but I couldn't find anything legitimately confirming or clearing it of malware status. I distrust these programs by default, but Microsoft Security Essentials seems to think it's legit. Does anyone know what this program is and if it's up to anything surreptious? Can I uninstall it or do I write off the entire OS install as tainted? The system hosts file is intact (no funny unicode lookalikes either), so that red flag, at least, hasn't been raised.

• How can I recover my Transcend pendrive when both the used space and free space are 0 bytes?

  I have an Transcend pendrive, and when I connect it and double click it to explore, it is showing the error: Please insert a disk into drive Also In the properties field it is showing File system- Unknown Used space- 0 bytes free space- 0 bytes capacity- 0 bytes I tried to format it using using the command prompt but it is not showing in the list disk command. It is also not showing in the Disk Management.

  I need to lockdown the system time on a number of PCs via gpedit.msc and then removing administrators from the group and then adding 'administrator' and 'polling'. Can I do this via a script? • Empty Recycle Bin error "Cannot Delete Dc12: Access denied."

  The Dc number can vary. The error is a sporadic, but when it happens it prevents the contents of the recycle bin from being deleted. It can also occur when the recycle bin appears to be empty, yet it has the crumpled paper indicator. Rebooting makes the problem go away, but it can also magically go away by just waiting a long time, like over night. But the problem keeps recurring with no rhyme or reason. What is causing this? I really don't want to reinstall Windows.

• How do I unlink a file-folder relationship?

  When asking IE to save an HTML page locally, with the option "Web page, complete", an html file is created along with a folder that contains all associated files (images, js, css etc). An association is created between the html file and the folder, so that when the file is deleted/moved, so is the folder. First, I'd like to know what this kind of association is called. Further, I'd like to know how to "unlink" this file-folder association.

• Pre-load MS Windows right-click menus and Start menu at startup

  Hello brainy people. On my WinXP SP3 laptop (1.4Ghz 1.2GB ram), after I first log in, when I right-click in Windows Explorer and choose New, the submenu can take up to 15 seconds to load, which is a pain in the ass when you want to do a quick easy operation. After the submenu has loaded the first time, subsequent loads perform instantly, obviously as the menu has been cached. My question is: can these right-click menus (and the Start menu, which also takes some time to load the first time) be pre-loaded at Windows startup? Thanks.

• Direct access to website's database with single click?

  I have noticed that when selecting options (drop down menus, radio buttons etc) on some websites you see an ever more complex URL being created and then you can use that URL to access that website at a later date and go straight to the page with your desired options. Unfortunately on other websites the URL remains fixed and you appear to have no choice but to select the options all over again. I was wondering if there was some utility that would help automate this process.

  I am trying to use Selenium RC but i keep getting this error whenever i start the server. "HTML suite exception seen: java.lang.RuntimeException: sessionId 7643 doesn't exist; perhaps this session w as already stopped?" The command I use is java -jar C:\selenium-remote-control-1.0.3\selenium-server-1.0.3\selenium-server.jar -multiwindow -htmlSuite "*iexplore" "https://user1.apps.com/" "C:\TEMP\Selenium Tests\TestSuite1.html" "C:\TEMP\Selenium Tests\results.html" However with the same command if I change *iexplore to *firefox then it works.   I have a group of names and addresses that I would like to import into Outlook. At the moment I have imported them into Excel, but all names and addresses are in one long entry. All are already separated by a comma. How can I get Excel to select each "value" and move it to a separate cell? Edit: I had already tried taking a text file and saving it as a .csv file. However, all contacts load into a single cell. I am using Excel 2003. Thanks.

  Our password policy makes users change pw every 30 days, when this happens they sometimes find they are logged on with a local profile and none of their settings. This generally only happens when the PC was slow at logging onto the network, but in this case I know it had plenty of time to do so. I can't work out why this is happening, is it related to a slow link?

  This computer came to my shop for just a simple Windows tuneup, so after doing all my tweaks, I noticed I was getting an error when trying to synchronize with the time server. It wasn't until I was about to give up that I noticed in the calendar that it's one weekday late. Here's a screenshot. As you can see, the day today, Friday - January 7th is a Thursday in the calendar. How is this possible?

  I am getting "ERROR: Network path was not found" when I try to create a scheduled task on my local machine. I am using this command at the command prompt: schtasks /tn taskname /tr taskpath /sc minute /mo 20 /sd 09/23/2010 /s \\%computername% /u username /p password When I give the above command without computername, username and password the task gets created perfectly fine. What am I doing wrong?? EDIT : I got it working by using the below command. I do not understand why it is working becuase I am using /ru and /rp which are remote user and remote password settings whereas I am executing the command on my local machine. And I had to give double quotes to computername. schtasks /tn taskname /tr taskpath /sc minute /mo 20 /sd 09/23/2010 /s "%computername%" /ru username /rp password

• Formatting a 5.25" floppy disk

  So after the massive trouble of finding a 5.25" floppy drive and a connecting it up, then changing the BIOS so it's set as my A: drive, I tried to format a couple of high-density 1.2MB floppy disks using the "format A:" command in Command Prompt. Both times it formatted only 160KB and left it at that. If I then check the amount of space on those disks, it then comes up as 160KB. Why is this the case? How can I get my the full value out of my 1.2MB? For reference, I have a Mitsubishi MF504C-318UG, which should support 1.2MB disks.

• I want to run a script when known bluetooth device connects/disconnects to WinXP

  I have a laptop on my desk at work. I have screensaver timer enabled, so if I'm not using the computer for ten minutes, it will start the screensaver. I also have "On resume, password protect" option checked. This is useful and I want it to be so. However, sometimes I just sit at my cubicle and read some documents without touching the computer. During that time I want my computer to know that I'm there and that there is no need to start the screensaver. I have a mobile phone that is bluetooth paired with the laptop for synchronizing calendars. Is there some way for a script or a program to know that any (or specified) paired device is connected? While typing this out I thought that there might be some registry entries for this. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? -Rope

• VirtualBox guest not recognizing daylight savings transition

  I want to test an app's behaviour during transitions in and out of daylight savings time. I therefore want to be able to set the date and time of a VirtualBox VM, (preferably from the Control Panel applet, but from a batch file is fine) and not have it "corrected" to the host's time for me. I have turned of Internet sync in the guest and that seems to have achieved this, so I wrote a couple of batch files to set the date to a value just prior to the time of transition in and out of daylight savings time. The VirtualBox guest doesn't seem to recognize the daylight savings changeover date - it just marches on past with no change of time, no message (yes - "Adjust clock for daylight savings" is enabled). Any ideas?

  Hi, I have a 3 yr old laptop (Thinkpad T61) which runs seemingly much hotter than it used to. It's not uncomfortable to touch, but I wonder whether I should do something about it. It does get uncomfortable if I have it on my lap (which I rarely need to do). I haven't made any mods to the laptop other than a bigger HD, and I recently cleaned up the inside (superficially - I didn't remove the fan). Are fans items that should be changed regularly?   I've got a big piece of scientific equipment which is hooked up to, and controlled by software running on a Windows PC. Unfortunately the software, provided by the manufacturer, crashes occasionally when nobody is there to watch it. We'd really like a piece of software which could watch the application, and when it crashes, send out an email right away. Is there anything out there like that? EDIT: we want to monitor the application, which is a normal piece of Windows software, running on the PC. The mention of the equipment was just sort of background to explain why we cared.

• Upgrade manually-installed msi by assigning software through gpo

  In the past I rolled out software by manually installing it on a "golden" workstation, creating an (ghost)image from that and rolling that out to the other workstations. I try not to do that any more for simple/small software, and when possible (if it's an .msi) I assign the software through gpo. I'm having a problem with one of those. The software was manually installed on the image, which was rolled out, and now I have an update for that software (new msi) and I'd like to assign it through gpo. Don't know if it's relevant but it's user assigned. The new version gets installed alongside with the old version (this is possible since the program folder is different between those versions). When I install the same msi by hand, it properly removes/upgrades the old version though. Is what I am trying to do possible?
