    We have a number of Windows XP / Windows 7 machines which need to be backed up nightly to a Linux file server. We would like to do it with rsync and rsnapshot as that's what we're familiar with already from the rest of our Linux/FreeBSD machines. We tried DeltaCopy, but DeltaCopy proved to be troublesome- lots of problems getting it to log in via SSH automatically, and the Windows Scheduled Tasks seem to fail often.   • How do I disable animations in Preview in Lion?

    For example, open up a pdf and set view to two pages and hit arrow key up/down. Is there a way to get rid of the animation? Preview feels really snappy and fast, and to have animations like that just spoils all the fun. Might seem like a proper first world problem, especially if you're just a casual user of pdfs. But I frequently have 10+ pdfs open for referencing purposes (that is, a lot of flicking back and fourth), and the animation just drives me nuts.

Breaking them is dangerous, pieces could fly fast and may cause harm. Scratching them badly is what I always do but it takes long time and I managed to read some of the data in the scratched CDs/DVDs. What's the way to physically destroy a CD/DVD safely?

    Assume I'm working away from the office; its a hotel computer Windows 7, Office 2010 and fast - so the best possible conditions. Using Companyweb - Every time I open a document, I have to go through the logon process - seems odd to have to do that. Is this a 'by design' feature or is something wrong with my configuration? When I do open the documents, are they being stored somewhere locally and should I be looking to delete on this computer - or are they in a temporary file?

I have XAMPP 1.7.1 running on a windows xp machine on which this application is deployed. While all my other applications that are running on XAMPP are loading fast, only this application is taking exorbitant amount of time.   • Windows 7 x64 - Problem with 32-bit processes...

    Hi All, Is it just me, or is Windows 7 x64 awfully unstable when it comes to 32-bit processes? If I ever find myself in a situation where a 32-bit process hangs or otherwise misbehaves, terminating the process (through e.g. task manager) seems to fail every time - there are no error messages or anything, it's just that the process refuses to terminate. Anyone else have the same problems running 32-bit applications on x64 Windows? Thanks, Will.

  • Is the XP VMM a bottleneck on a multi core machine?

    I have a dual Xeon hex core machine running an IO intensive application. (WinXP 32) I am seeing a hardware driver (1/2 user mode, 1/2 kernel, streaming data) that is using 6k delta page faults per second. When other applications load or allocate large amounts of memory the driver's hardware buffer gets an underrun (application not feeding it fast enough). Could this be because the kernel is only using one core to service page fault interrupts?

The one running Debian sid has a decent graphics card, the Windows 7 machine has no graphics card and a weak processor. The two are connected over a fast local network. Are there any OpenGL implementations, where Windows 7 would use the Debian machine's graphics card to do OpenGL rendering "over the network"?

I press f5 really fast and then I see in top command both computers are being loaded but not much.     How can I have recovery partition at the HDD end? My aim is to have data partition installed on fastest sectors of my hard drive, as I don't really care if restoring operations are slow... During Windows installation, when I create a partition, I get immediately created EFI and recovery ones just before the actual data partition. EFI position is good, I want my PC boot fast, but I want to move partitions I don't care about speed. I've also considered GParted, but I think I'm not able to use it :P

This function works fine in other programs (like google-chrome) Is there a place to fix this ? edit: I found out that when I scroll the mouse FAST the desired effect happens. I would like it to also work with slower scrolling. The thing is also that on any other program - the scrolling acts as normal. (so this is not a system wide preference)

It could be virtual (running on Xen or Hyper-V) and the price needs to be right. Windows 7 to Windows 7 has nice RDP offload feature and doing stuff in the cloud is fast. Anywhere I could rent something like that? I've been using Amazon and CloudLayer, but they are optimized for server versions of Windows.

    I have a VPN to my work which is quite fast... I Remote Desktop to my work PC, which is running a Microsoft Virtual PC. Working with the PC while I'm actually at work isn't too bad, but when I try to interact with it over the remote desktop, it is VERY slow to respond. Even simple typing can be slow, but screen painting and response time is painfully obvious. Any suggestions to help speed it up?

  • Loudspeaker Tile in Windows 8

    In the classical desktop I have the loudspeaker symbol, which I use to make the sound louder and quieter by using the mouse. On the modern UI Start Screen I can change it through the Charm-Bar and settings, but it is inconvenient.
