  What are the minimum ports and services that should I allow/open for listen and/or transmit in my firewall (I am using Firestarter) to keep my internet running ok? Some talk about what services, which port uses, and why it matters should be nice too. Thanks for any advice. I have some bet to the answer 80 http 443 https 53 dns EDIT: I will just browse some sites. I have a windows virtual machine, so I ll use it too, bu t just normal navigation too. No torrents, IRC's, FLASH, etc.. Thanks for attention. hmmm... lost! Linux Mint 9 here.

• E-commerce + CMS: 2 sites or one?

  Ok, let's say that a customer already has a CMS managed web site but now wants to sell goods online using an E-commerce platform (Magento in this case). My question is, does it make any difference between choosing to have just one site running both CMS and E-commerce (www.mycompany.com, or to have one site for the CMS (www.mycompany.com) and another (www.mycompany-shop.com) for E-commerce? I'd like to know the pros and cons of these approaches, so that I can advice the customer for the best. --EDIT I forgot to say that I'd prefer to have 2 separated web sites. This way I shouldn't have to learn how to integrate them together (one in Python, the other in PHP).

  This book is more than just  a book about an ASP.NET CMS system -  it has much practical advice and examples for the Dot Net web developer. I liked the use of JQuery to detect that JavaScript was not enabled. One chapter was about MemCached - this one chapter could justify the price of the book if you run a server farm and need to improve performance. • Revamped Joomla site to Google search engine

  I am about to upload a revamped site of Joomla (update from 1.5 to 2.5 + changes). I currently have a test bed subdomain that I am currently working on. In few days I am about to do the swap and replace the old site with the new one. I am worrying about Search Engines and specifically Google. The site currently has a very good rank (appears 2nd in the search), what actions do I have to take in order to be updated and preserve the rank? (except submitting the new sitemap I guess). It's not a difficult task but because I don't have the option to be wrong or mistakes to be done I an asking for a more "expert" advice.

• Looking for a lean WYSIWYG inline editor for CMS projects that includes an image upload feature?

  Hey guys, I am looking to find a lean WYSIWYG inline editor. The main required feature is image uploading. A simple way to upload an image to the server and use it in the content being editted. I have come across a whole bunch of editors but nothing I liked so far. I am looking for something open source and free. So far I have checked out TinyMCE which is free.. untill you need image uploading capabilities. Ckeditor looks great.. uses jquery.. but requires you to have your own server side script to upload images. They barely give any documentation on how to do this. There were a few others, but the bottom line was that I cant find anything that is simple with out of the box image uploading capabilities. Thanks for any advice you may give!

  I don't have any experience writing .sh files. I want to run the pvm2raw utility of this app from the Volume Library. • Lesser-known Github features that I'm missing out on with Bitbucket? [closed]

  I've been using Bitbucket for my small-team development projects, with the assumption that it is more-or-less a Github clone with pricing that is better for my situation and support for Mercurial (which I don't need). However, I'm seeing there are material-if-not-overwhelming differences, e.g. Github's appealing and useful branches page versus Bitbucket's overly simple branch drop-down list. This makes me wonder: what else am I missing out on? What are the lesser known Github features that folks like me using Bitbucket to save money are missing out on? • I need data structure for effective handling with dates

  What I need is something like Hashtable which I will fill with prices that were actual at desired days. For example: I will put two prices: January 1st: 100USD, March 5th: 89USD. If I search my hashtable for price: hashtable.get(February 14th) I need it to give me back actual price which was entered at Jan. 1st because this is the last actual price. Normal hashtable implementation won't give me back anything, since there is nothing put on that dat. I need to see if there is such implementation which can find quickly object based on range of dates.

• How to make Classic ASP interesting if you are stuck with it?

  I used to work on a really small outsourcing company (4 programmers and the boss), then when the stress and the frequent long shifts made the situation unbearable I made the switch to a better paid job with a more relaxed schedule that allows me some more free time. The problem, however, is that for the most part, everything is coded in Classic ASP that interfaces with a custom made C++ queueing system that stores everything in AS400 systems. My boss used to be one of the developers that made the initial efforts towards this, and naturally won't ever approve a switch to another languages / technologies despite the increasing difficulty that represents developing today business needs with yesterday tools. I'm pretty much stuck coding with Classic ASP in the foreseeable future, and I'm struggling to find ways to make it at least interesting, as I used to work with .NET and Java previously, and I feel like I'm going backwards... Any advice?

• Defining the track in a 2D racing game

  I am designing a top-down racing game using canvas (html5) which takes a lot of inspiration from Micro Machines. In MM, cars can move off the track, but they are reset/destroyed if they go too far. My maths knowledge isn't great, so I'm finding it hard to separate 3D/complex concepts from those which are directly relevant to my situation. For example, I have seen "splines" mentioned, is this something I should read up on or is that overkill for a 2D game? Could I use a single path which defines the centre of the track and check a car's distance from this line? A second path might be required as a "racing line" for AI. Any advice on methods/techniques/terms to read up on would be greatly appreciated.

• Why do people still use C these days? [closed]

  C++ is clearly a far superior language than C, since it has many features that C lacks (although, C++'s object model isn't as ideal as say C#'s). With the coming off the new C++0x standard, why hasn't C been phased out to obscurity? C++ has been around for so long, since the '80s. The Linux kernel has already been ported to C++ with negligible performance differences. I believe, with no evidence, that larger program structures benefit in performance if written in C++ than in C, if only because of object interaction. Don't get me started on "objects-in-C!" libraries, which are all a terrible hack. (Not that C++'s object model is the most ideal, but it is almost up to snuff with C# using common ad-hoc techniques.)

• Metacity used with proprietary driver and proposed repository

  I enabled the proposed repository in a fresh install with the proprietary nvidia-173 driver. After the reboot, I noticed that minimizing and maximizing, there were none of the expected effect (using Ubuntu Classic, even with proprietary driver, Unity does not work - another issue). Furthermore I confirmed by trying to switch workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, and the square desktop wall was replaced by horizontally lined workspaces of Metacity. Of course, the upgraded Compiz could be responsible, but I can't figure out what to do - please advice. Additionally, if it's an issue with the softwares from proposed repo, how and what do I do to notify the developers of the issue?

• Python Multiprocessing with Queue vs ZeroMQ IPC

  I am busy writing a Python application using ZeroMQ and implementing a variation of the Majordomo pattern as described in the ZGuide. I have a broker as an intermediary between a set of workers and clients. I want to do some extensive logging for every request that comes in, but I do not want the broker to waste time doing that. The broker should pass that logging request to something else. I have thought of two ways :- Create workers that are only for logging and use the ZeroMQ IPC transport Use Multiprocessing with a Queue I am not sure which one is better or faster for that matter. The first option does allow me to use the current worker base classes that I already use for normal workers, but the second option seems quicker to implement. I would like some advice or comments on the above or possibly a different solution.

After you select an answer, the system tells you if you are right or wrong and provides an explanation. It provides the percentage of correct answers. • What is the best way to implement paginated text editing in Python?

  I'm trying to build a formatted text editor in python. I need the editor to be paginated on edit mode. Same as in all popular word processors - when the user is editing the document what he/she sees is a representation of the actual, physical, page. I've tried looking into PySide but I can't find any ready solution to this, nor I can work out a way to do it myself. I am totally open to new technologies, so if you think Python is not the right choice here I would love to hear about new stuff (especially when I'm this new to UI coding). It only needs to be cross-platform and let me do rapid development (hence me looking for an out-of-the-box solution to this). Please suggest the best way to implement this. Please also note that I am looking for either a ready solution or an advice on how to tackle this. Thank you very much !

• Hashing a python method to regenerate output when method is modified

  I have a python method that has a deterministic result. It takes a long time to run and generates a large output: def time_consuming_method(): # lots_of_computing_time to come up with the_result return the_result I modify time_consuming_method from time to time, but I would like to avoid having it run again while it's unchanged. [Time_consuming_method only depends on functions that are immutable for the purposes considered here; i.e. it might have functions from Python libraries but not from other pieces of my code that I'd change.] The solution that suggests itself to me is to cache the output and also cache some "hash" of the function. If the hash changes, the function will have been modified, and we have to re-generate the output. Is this possible or a ridiculous idea?   I am currently working on a educational and fun 2-in-1 game. As I am not a professional, I need advice on story and news-feed. The goal is simple-get richer, the story is about a worker who is trying to get over his/her financial problems and become rich. During the whole gaming process there is a news-feed (every day there are a couple of fresh news about what is going on). The news are fresh and individual so I need to write about 2000 pieces of news for 2 year gaming, maybe more. The problem is that I am not sure whether repetitive news can interest in this game.
