• Private domain purchase with paypal: how to prevent fraud?

  I am finally going to buy a domain I have been looking at. The domain owner wants me to give him my Godaddy account information and send him the payment via Paypal gift, so that there will be no extra charges. Should this cause suspicion? Does Paypal offer any kind of fraud protection? What is the best way to protect myself from fraud in this situation, without the need for escrow services, such as escrow.com? Any advice welcomed. Thanks.

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • Best practices on separating Update and Draw on game loop

  I've been working on my first HTML5 prototype and I found a good model that uses the regular Update and Draw loop we see in game dev. My question is, where does one end and the other begins? The question popped when I wanted to rotate and draw an Image, and I kept wondering if the work of changing the tranformation matrix (that I presume would be a bit expensive since it works on the whole pixel array of an image) and calculating the right position do draw it would characterize drawing work, or maybe not, since after that I may need to check for collision or something similar. Thinkig of it, seems like a silly question, but I would like some advice from more experienced developers. Where does does update ends and draw starts? Thanks in advance.

  I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

• 12.04 server on home network

  I need advice to help me with a server install, I'm new to ubuntu and linux in general. I have 6 systems in my house, 5 being windows 7 and this laptop that I am typing on is Linux mint 13 Maya. Question is, my wife will not transition to anything. She is stuck in Gates-land. so, can I make a server with ubuntu 12.04 (burnt disc image last night) so that all systems in my home can access and my mother-in-law in another state can also access with a username? That would be awesome and it may convince the war dept (my wife) to change all the systems in my house to ubuntu/linux. Sorry this is so long winded, but all the questions I have seen on this forum don't answer it completely.

• Reboot to fail safe mode when root file system is full

  I have a system running on a 4GB Nandrive. When the drive is full, Ubuntu will not boot :( and I have to plug in a rescue thumbdrive to delete files. The problem is the hardware is not easily accessible except via network. Is there a sure-fire way to boot Ubuntu, say, to RAM or other means when the disk is full or on any other errors in the normal boot process? In other words, is there a fallback rescue boot mode with networking? Thanks for any advice.

Then from that last update, I have - in this case - 2 odds from 2 different bookmakers, so I need to get the best one for type '1','2','X'. Pseudo SQL would be something like: SELECT MAX(odds_index) WHERE odds_type = '1' ORDER BY created_at DESC, odds_index DESC But that doesn't work, because I would always get the latest odds (and not the highest/best from those latest) I hope I'm making sense.

  I am trying to install codeblocks using ubuntu software center. I found it but when install, I get dependency not resolved, libgcc1...like that. My system ubuntu 12.04, 32bits. Any advice will be appreciated. detailed fail message: codeblocks:depends:libgcc1(=1:4.1.1) but 1:4.6.3-1ubuntu5 is to be installed depends:codeblocks-common(=10.05-2) but 12.11-2 is to be installed. I went to codeblocks "more info" button in Ubuntu software center and selected all the add-ons for codeblocks. Apply changes and now I get an additional (to the two above) dependency message:depends:libwxsmithlib0(=10.05-2) but 12.11-2 is to be installed.

• Do I need to notify a user if I am using statistics software in an iPhone app?

  Hello, I am currently creating a (very simple) Objective-C client to send basic statistical data to my server for an iPhone app - just things like the state of the app (first-launch or launch, error, etc), along with the make/model/version (i.e.: "iPod touch 4.2"). No personally identifiable information or location data is sent. Is there anything, in the Apple Developer agreement or otherwise, that states that I must notify the user if I am doing this? I'm not interested in selling the data or anything, I just want to use the data to make my apps better. I am not adverse to telling the user I am doing this if it is required, I just don't want to scare the users (the paranoid "oooh, they're tracking me, they know exactly where I am" crowd) if I don't have to. Currently I have ethernet and wireless networks configured through a network manager (further NM) but it seems to be a bit buggy (I need a different MAC for ether which is never applied if using NM), so I would like to move all the network configs to interfaces file. I know (or can google for) configuration code, but I'm not sure how NM works and it looks like it overrides interface config. Please advice, how I can handle this issue. NOTE: I also would like to be able to locate and connect to various wireless networks but not sure how to do it.

• Slow Wireless Reconnect After Suspend

  I a Broadcom 4312 using the STA drivers, I reinstalled ubuntu because the b43 drivers were giving me a huge hassle along with some weird kernel issues. My wireless speed is fine, everything works well, except upon restart of computer and after taking the computer out of suspend. It takes about 30-45 seconds for the wireless to reconnect, and I think it is a driver issue (I clicked on the network manager at the top and for about 30 seconds there are no wireless networks listed.) I tried this advice already: http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/2007/10/31/fix-ubuntu-dropping-wireless-on-suspendhibernate-resume/ which basically says to change this: STOP_SERVICES="" to STOP_SERVICES="networking" in the file /etc/default/acpi-support This did not help anything. Something to note is that the issue does not occur when I am logging back in after already logging in once and logging out.

• upgrade from ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 failed, now loads "grub rescue"

  I attempted to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 last night. Installation seemed to go fine, and this morning I had a message like "restart now to complete installation". So I restart, get an initial "Loading Operating System ..." message, followed by "error: file not found. Then it kicks into "grub rescue" mode. Previously I have this running as a dual boot (window 7) and I just ran the upgrade to 12.10 via the update manager in ubuntu. Any ideas on what is going on here, or what the error means? I know my way around the command line, but this is above my pay grade. Thanks for any advice.

• Denormalize for Simplicity: Ungood idea?

  After reading this question, I've learned that denormalization is not a solution for simplicity. What about this case? I have news-articles which have a list of sites-article-will-be-published-to. The latter can be expressed in normalized fashion either by table and a many-to-many relationship (via a cross-table, I think). But the simple solution is to just throw a bunch of booleans for the sites-article-will-be-published-to. Assuming the sites are: small in number will not change over time have no fields themselves, except a name Is this still a terrible idea? The many-to-many relationship seems somewhat cumbersome, but I've done it before in cases like this (and it seemed cumbersome). Note: I'm doing this in Rails, where it's not that painful.

  I'm probably about to buy a laptop, unfortunely they all have glare screen, even the "premium" device, the actual offer just differentiate on 2-3 variations about DPI and display resolution; considering that i would like a 13" laptop, what can be the best resolution? I was looking for a 4:3 but this days they are all cheap-made so i do not think that something expensive to produce like a 4:3 is on the market. on the 13" laptops i see that basically there are available 3 kinds of displays: 1366x768 ( a 16:9 ratio ) 1400x900 ( a 16:10 ratio ) 1600x900 ( a 16:9 ratio ) Honestly i'm asking for an advice because i do not like this things, not even one of them, but this is the market today, i was looking for some old-style laptop with good plastics, a 4:3 ratio or 5:4 or something like that and a true matte finish with an higher resolution compared to what you could find in the old laptops. Since programming involves the presence of many text character on the screen it's a good thing to choose the one with the highest DPI/PPI ?

  I need to find or create a tool that analyzes the audio spectrum of a sound file (like a .wav or .mp3). I need to output the "volume" or power of x number of frequency bands and output the data as text. This will be used to produce a visualization, a graphic equalizer like you'd see on a stereo. I am currently looking at python to do it. My question is are there some tools out there that would do this (signal processing), like math works or others? • How can I successfully install Ubuntu 12.10 next to windows 7

  I have an installation of Windows 7 and I would like to install Ubuntu 12.10 side by side. During the installation of Ubuntu GRUB comes up with an error and gives me the option to select which disk it should be installed to. I have always found this difficult as I am never sure which disk to select. In my case I see one with "Windows bootloader". I was guessing that was the boot disk for my system but having selected it and completing the Ubuntu installation, GRUB did not appear and Windows loaded. I had no way to get to my Ubuntu installation. I then tried another disk for GRUB after receiving the same message on a re-install of Ubuntu but it didn't work either. In stead of fumbling about I thought I would ask here. Thanks for any advice!

• How do you stay motivated for hobby projects?

  I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?

  I'm new to Snap.svg and SVG and experimenting with transformations (an illustraiting plunk can be found here). Basically I'm trying to move, scale and rotate a shape according to its configuration. This is what I've found out so far: rotating around a point is possible with rotate(angle, x, y) there is no direct transform method to scale around a point but it can be done as described in "SVG Essentials" However combining these transforms doesn't give me the expected result - my expected calculated center of the shape differs from the rendered one. • How to calibrate Toshiba LED screen - the colours are over saturated

  I have purchased a new Toshiba Satellite C850-A812 laptop, with ATI Radeon HD 75xx series. When i first installed Ubuntu 12.04.1, the open source driver worked like a charm with the colors, i mean the colors were so vivid. However after installing the ATI proprietary driver from the repos, the colors went too "whity" and too bright. I even installed the updated driver, and went further to download the latest driver from ATI and install it in vain. I tried to use the ubuntu build in calibration tool, but it keeps on asking me to enter the ICC profile before i proceed to calibrate. I played with the catalyst control center, tried everything possible, but still the colors are still wayyyyyyyyy over exposed. Please advice :)

• Does Hauppauge WinTVR 900H work with Digital TV in the UK

  I have been trying to sort out my Hauppauge WinTV 900H USB Tuner. Here in the UK, we do not have Analogue TV any more as we are fully converted to digital. I have had this working in Windows a while ago, but am having no joy in Ubuntu 13.04 all I get is a blue screen and no settings for the UK. Can anyone advise me how to set this up on my laptop. I have tried: Does Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502] work with ubuntu 12.04 LTS? I am using TVTime I have also read this page, which makes me think that this unit can only receive Analogue signals, which are no longer transmitted in the UK (which could be my problem!) Laptop Specifications: Intel® Core™ i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4 Intel® Sandybridge Mobile 6MB RAM Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
