• Configuring Compiz Grid?

  Disclaimer: I'm three days into Ubuntu, and am loving it so far. Except for this one thing. Apparently there is a way to get an 'Areo Snap' feature with the Grid Plugin for Compiz. I've downloaded the advanced configuration files and have selected the plugin in the Compiz Configuration - even re-mapped the keys because I don't have a numpad. Regardless of what I do, I can't get it to work, either by dragging the windows or using the assigned keys. Is there something I need to do in addition to these things? Am I simply missing something?

• Gnome 3 panel and menus are all gone?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 using gnome 3 shell. I have set my pc to automatically log into gnome shell so I do not see the login screen. Today I installed some updates and now the gnome panel is gone. When my pc logs in I ONLY see the background. There are no menus, nothing! Even the exit, minimize and maximise buttons in the top tight corner of the windows are gone. Also, alt+f2 also does not work. Any ideas how to fix this? I have a Nvidia Geforce 7900GTO with the Nvidia proprietary drivers installed. I have also used the recovery mode and removed some packages that apparently were broken. Still does not work.

• Useful versioning scheme for a git project?

  I have a small github project, which I need to add an option to to output some version number on the commandline. The problem is I have no idea how to "compute" the version number. Is this some random process? Should I just start at 1.0 (probably creating a tag or something), and put a number after . for fixes? I know this question is a bit vague... I just had never to deal with this, and want to use some sane versioning scheme. EDIT Im also interested into how to update this version number automatically, maybe using something like a git hook.

  I know that in OpenGL I can do something like this glReadBuffer( GL_FRONT ); glReadPixels( 0, 0, _width, _height, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, _buffer ); And its pretty fast, I get the raw bitmap in _buffer. When I try to do this in DirectX. Assuming that I have a D3DDevice object I can do something like this if (SUCCEEDED(D3DDevice->GetBackBuffer(0, 0, D3DBACKBUFFER_TYPE_MONO, &pBackbuffer))) { HResult hr = D3DXSaveSurfaceToFileA(filename, D3DXIFF_BMP, pBackbuffer, NULL, NULL); But D3DXSaveSurfaceToFile is pretty slow, and I don't need to write the capture to disk anyway, so I was wondering if there was a faster way to do this

• Just installed 12.04 and it freezes when I try logging in

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire 1 with AMD Dual-Core C60, 4 GB RAM, and 320 GB HDD (100 GB partitioned for Ubuntu). After restarted my computer, I was able to log in fine but when I tried to log in again after shutting my netbook off, it began to freeze on the log in screen. The freezing occurs several seconds after I'm prompted to enter my password. Even if i enter the password before the freezing occurs, I end up getting stuck while it's loading or something. I'm new to Ubuntu so I have no idea what to do. Also, before it gets to the log in screen, it says something like this: NTFS5: No wubildr NTFS5: No wubildr NTFS5: error: "prefix" edit: it was wubildr, not unbilder. Also, the freezing seems to be inconsistent

  I've got a problem with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. At first I ran mount command on terminal. Then I restarted my computer. After that, when my computer opened there is writing this: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue I searched commands and I found ls command. • Computer crashed during 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade

  My computer crashed (due to heat) during the update process for the 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade. My computer will not boot ant all in 3.0.0.17 now and 3.0.0.16 is unstable (wireless networking doesn't work, also crashes often). I found the boot to previous versions tool at start up and the last stable version is 3.0.0.15-generic. However, my computer still thinks that it has 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic, even though both of these versions are broken. Is there anyway to force a reinstall of the 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic kernel updates from 3.0.0.15 and associated other updates?. (Without having to do a full reinstall?) I am running ubuntu 11.10. Thanks!

• How much C/C++ knowledge is needed for Objective-C/iPhone development?

  First, a little background. I'm a .Net developer (C#) and have over 5 years experience in both web development and desktop applications. I've been wanting to look into iPhone development for some time now, but for one reason or another always got side tracked. I finally have a potential project on the horizon, and I'm now going full steam ahead learning this stuff. My question is this: I haven't done any C/C++ programming since my schooling days, I've been living in managed land ever since. How much knowledge if any is needed to be successful as an iOS developer? Obviously memory management is something that I'll have to be conscious about (although with iOS 5 there seems to be something called ARC which should make my life easier), but what else? I'm not just talking about the C API (for example, in order to get the sin of a number, I call the sin() function), that's what Google is for. I'm talking about fundamental C/C++ idioms that the average C# developer is unaware of.

  Possible Duplicate: When do you know it's time to move on from your current job? I have been working for a couple years now. I just want to know what people think about leaving one company for another, or to start looking around for other positions. I tend to use people's resumes as a guideline for when to change from one company to another. I am approaching, the time in my life where most of those people I look too, move away from their first position to pursue others. I know that isn't something good to base my decisions on what other do. I was wondering when is it time to move companies. I am currently happy at my position, and I am learning tons. • how to launch grub menu for ubuntu guests in virtualbox?

  I have ubuntu 12.04 alpha installed in virtualbox. When the virtual machine is started, it boots directly to the login screen without showing the grub menu. How can I get the grub menu to show up on start? Please note: the graphics is broken after recent updates, so i cannot login and make the changes. it is stuck at the screen "Ubuntu is running on low graphics mode" and the mouse and other keys do not work.   I am planning on building a web app with many different public-facing HTTP servers; each of which will have Google Analytics (GA) installed on them. I'd like to create a "dashboard" app that consolidates the GA data into one screen. I've been perusing the documentation for this so-called GA API, but I can't tell what the end result of the GA API is: Does the GA API allow me to do exactly what I am looking for it to do? Or... Does the GA API do something entirely different (like allow me to share my data with Google+ or something else weird) Since an API can be used to CRUD any kind of data, I guess I'm asking which way the GA API goes: is it for querying (reading) data from 1+ server instances, or is it for modifying data on those servers or somewhere else?   Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? • Sudo Non-Password access to /sys/power/state

  On my computer, pm-hibernate appears to be broken, however using the command echo disk > /sys/power/state appears to work perfectly. Now I just need regular user access to it, using sudo. How do I do this? The command sudo echo disk > /sys/power/state simply returns bash: /sys/power/state: Permission denied. Also, I need this in a regularly used script, how can I make it so that I don't have to type in my password for it to work???

  So I'm looking for ways to optimize my site for user and search engine purposes. I've read several articles and looked at several different plugins. To say the least, I'm thoroughly confused as what are the best practices for managing internal and external links. Here is a list of some of my questions: Which internal links should be set to "nofollow"? Which external links should be set to "nofollow"? To what degree does actively managing links contribute to your PR? Should you use "nofollow" blindly on all links in comments? If a link to an external site is broken (404 or whatever), should you "nofollow" that link? What about "noindex"? As you can see, lots of questions. I'm hoping that you experienced webmasters can give a newb some best-practice advice.

• What is the best way to deal with 404s that are all trying to point to the same page that are from an external site?

  I started getting 404s showing up in my Google Webmaster's Tools from a site linking to a specific category but with odd characters at the end of the url. So Something like this: http://example.com/category/puppies%EF%BC%9A.textwidget%E8%A6%81%E7%B4%A0%E7%B7%A8%E9%9B%86 Google Webmaster says that there are about 120 of these links and I can imagine there will be more to come. What is the best way to handle these links from an seo point-of-view? I have heard 301 redirecting too many links at one time can cause Google to ding the site but I don't want this site to continue posting broken links. Any help on this would be appreciated.

• problem with template: negative margins on float

  i'm having a very strange problem with the wordpress template. i'd like to place 2 divs besides each other like this: <div style='float:left;'> left div </div> <div style='float:right'> right div </div> normally this works as it should - both divs should stick directly to each other - but something in the style.css (which uses css reset) causes the right div to overlap the left div with ~ 5pixels. i searched the whole .css for it but couldn't find out :(( it's just a fact that it must be something with the default css. anyone knows what is causing this - some fix? thanks

• Efficient way to calculate "vision cones" on 2D tile map?

  I'm trying to calculate which tiles a particular unit can "see" if facing a certain direction on a tile map (within a certain range and angle of facing). The easiest way would be to draw a certain number of tiles outward and raycast to each tile. However, I'm hoping for something slightly more efficient. A picture says a thousand words: The red dot is the unit (who's facing upwards). My goal is to calculate the yellow tiles. The green blocks are walls (walls are between tiles, and it's easy to check if you can pass between two tiles). The blue line represents something like the "raycasting" method I was talking about, but I'd rather not have to do this. EDIT: Units can only be facing north/south/east/west (0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees) and FoV is always 90 degrees. Should simplify some calculations. I'm thinking there's some sort of recursive-ish/stack-based/queue-based algorithm, but I can't quite figure it out. Thanks!

  I have already read Delete and arrow keys not working and tried what is written there. I have also tried restarting my computer. I have also searched elsewhere for answers, but I haven't found any solution. I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and there were not problems yesterday, but for the last hour, I've had the following problem. When I press the up or the right arrow, nothing happens. • Why is facebook cache buggy?

  I just started using facebook and I see that many times when I add something to my profile and visit it later its not there. I bet the reason is that the page is cached and not updated very often. Is this on purpose or is it a bug? P.S. For example I added the music I like and later I see that I did not add it, but next day when I visit again its there. I saw it in two web-browsers, so its a facebook bug. Does it has something to do with scalability?

Lately, I researched that "OPENGL" is one of the tools to use in graphics, then I found out about "SFML" (I think that its a library or something that uses opengl). I am so confuse because all books/ sites said using "GLUT", but many people/fellow developers said that I must use a more updated one like "SFML" but sfml has few/none tutorials. What I am trying to say is "how to create own library or something like your own glut or sfml", and why does opengl has no source code? And how can I use the EXACT(not glut/sfml) opengl in my c++ program? I am so confuse....

• How can I change my "Desktop bar"?

  The problem: In Gnome 3.4 when I click the main menu, it's white. The text of the menu is also white. Original text: I have a problem. When I installed the new version of Gnome (3.4) the "Desktop bar" (I'm sorry, I don't know what's the real name of that bar, but is the bar on the top on Ubuntu 11.10) every time I click on the username icon, or the battery, etc., the menu comes on gray or white and the letters are white. I know maybe this is a stupid question but it annoys me. Besides, my username doest not appear on the login screen. I tried to reset my settings, I delete gnome, and check the Unsettings and CompizConfig but the problem is still there. Maybe I miss something on the process of looking on any configuration tool but I don't think so... Sorry if the question is something basic or even stupid but I'm new on Ubuntu and I'm experimenting whit it.

• Will learning programming be as fundamental as learning reading/writing to the kids of the future?

  It seems I encounter more and more economists, scientists, and miscellaneous other professionals that have jobs that involve programming on some level. More and more, the jobs that my peers have in many many technical professions involve at least some simple scripting if not something more involved. It seems it used to be that "software engineer" was a distinct profession, now its becoming just another skill like writing -- something that any serious technical professional should be able to use for their job. I see a future where programming is essential to getting any kind of technical/mathematical job. Extrapolating on my anecdotal view of my colleagues... Will the kids of the future become literate in programming in the same way they become readers/writers? Will it become so fundamental to our economy and society that it will be taught at an early age? Will interacting with computers be as important as interacting with other people?
