• "too many automatic redirections were attempted" error message when using a httpWebRequest in .NET

  I am attempting to request a page like "http://www.google.com/?q=random" using the webrequest class in vb.net. we are behind a firewall, so we have to authenticate our requests. I have gotten past the authentication part by adding my credentials. But once that works it seems to go into a redirecting loop. Does anyone have an ideas, comments, suggetions why this is? Has anyone else experienced this problem? • iWebkit vs. JQTouch vs. iUI

  Hello, I am going to develop a content rich application that ideally should have been an iPhone-app, but since I'm short on time, I will stick with technologies that I can, such as JQuery, CSS and HTML. The more mobile devices my site runs on besides iPhone, the better. A brief search on the web leaves me with the impression that there are three tools I may use: iWebkit, JQTouch and iUI. I have toyed about with JQTouch, which I find impressive and simple to use. With simplicity comes lack of customizability; I would very much like to have sliders and other cool features in my GUI. Any comments on which of these three to go for?

• Custom app_offline.htm file during publish

  When I publish my ASP.NET MVC application it generates a app_offline.htm file to take the site offline while it updates the website and then deletes the file once the publish is successful. This is cool and I really like the idea, but I want to create my own custom app_offline.htm file that the publish action is aware of and put it somewhere where it doesn't effect my development site - i.e. it doesn't sit in the root of my development site rendering it offline all the time. TIA, Charles EDIT: From the comments on Scott Gu's post about app_offline.htm, it seems that customization of the app_offline.htm file wasn't possible with VS 2005 - has this changed with VS 2008 and now VS 2010?

• RIA Services vs ADO.NET Data Services

  I'm currently in the process of creating a Silverlight 3 data driven application. To access the database, 2 common approaches are used: RIA Services and ADO.NET Data Services. Does anyone have any guidance on when/why to choose each approach? Here is what I've gathered from my research / experience. Any thoughts? ADO.NET seems to be only useful for strictly database calls. If you need to expose the data services to other applications (ignoring Silverlight 3's domain restriction), this is a good approach. Also, if the URL/Query syntax can be useful in your application, this is another advantage RIA Services seem to be a more flexible, accepted framework. It seems to give you more than strictly database access. It does have a limitation of only being used for the Silverlight / Web application as it is not exposed via a service. Thoughts? Ideas? Comments?

• Workspace.PendEdit not checking out files

  I'm using the TFS 2010 SDK to programmatically check in edits to files into TFS 2010. The documentation on the TFS 2010 SDK is sparse at best. When I call the method workspace.pendedit() passing in an array of files I want to mark as having a pending edit, nothing is actually checked out. So when I call workspace.checkin() passing in workspace.getpendingchanges and some comments I get an exception that there must be at least one thing that has a pending change (which should be what I passed into pendedit). Any thoughts on why the app isn't marking the files as having a pending edit in the workspace?

• What is the advantage of WSDualHttpBinding in WCF?

  How much benefit would there be to using WSDualHttpBinding with IIS hosted service vs. a client poll that calls the WCF service, assuming in the latter the service cached the data in question? This scenerio would be for a notify type of service where the clients need to be notified by the service when an event occurs. Specifically, what advantages would WSDualHttpBinding provide over polling? ie: Less network traffic, faster to design, easier to maintain, more control ??? From what i understand, WSDualHttpBinding is less scalable than client polling, so why use it at all? Edit: As Matt supplied, time critical can be one reason for the duplex binding. • iPhone: Application Install Fails With "Invalid Signer" Error

  The iPhone is attached to a Mac runnning the latest iTunes version and I am 100% sure that her UDID is in the provisioning file. Her iPhone has not been jailbroken and we even restored it to factory settings. I am having trouble installing our development build on this one iPhone. The error is: the application "[Application Name]" was not installed on the iPhone "iPhone" because the signer is not valid I am 100% sure that the UDID is accurately entered in the provisioning file and that they correctly copied the right provision file/build combo. This same combo has been successfully installed on over a dozen iphones. We have been able to install this on some devices with no problems. Edit: From comments to an answer: We can install it on 100 iphone with our account. We have about 40 iphones in this provisioning profile and it works on 38 of them.

  I want to write a page where user's can write a blog post and publish it to the blog. I've downloaded blog engine .NET and looked at the code and I like the way they do it, but it's completely an overkill of what I need. What I need is only a title, author, date, and the blog post it self. I don't even want users to post comments or anything like that. My approach is to save all those blog post information into an xml and then when a page loads it loops around those xml files to show the blog post. Is there a tutorial on how to do this online? Especially for doing blog posts.

• Putting data from local SQL database to remote SQL database without remote SQL access enabled (PHP)

  Hi, I have a local database, and all the tables are defined. Eventually I need to publish my data remotely, which I can do easily with PHPmyadmin. Problem however is that my remote host doesn't allow remote SQL connections at all, so writing a script that does a mysqldump and run it through a client (which would've been ideal) won't help me here. Since the schema won't change, but the data will, I need some kind of PHP client that works "reverse". My question is if such a client exists and what would be recommended to use (by experience). I just need an one way trip here, from my local database (Rails) to the remote database (supports PHP), preferable as simple and slick as possible. Thank you for your replies, comments and feedback!

• Using facebook oauth 2.0 - How do I fetch the access token

  Hi all! I am new to oauth and I'm trying to use facebook connect with my web-application. I have succeded in getting a verification token but my problem is "fetching" the access token. How do I fetch it? Facebook documentation tells me to fetch the access token with this URL: https://graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?' + 'client_id=XXXXXXXXXXXX& redirect_uri=http://www.mysite.com/fbconn/index.html&display=touch&' + 'client_secret=axxxxxcxxxxxxxxxxx&code=' + code; When I use this I see the access token on a blank page, but I want to fetch it with javascript (AJAX) /PHP or something. Is this possible? I thought the access token would be appended to my redirect uri like the verfication code but I never get redirected to my page. What am I doing wrong? The solution below works fine but I am specifically looking for a way to lookup manager of the user who created the holiday request list item in the workflow. • Installing PHP extensions in Debian

  I'm trying to install the PECL extension pecl_http so that I can use PHP's http_negotiate_language() function. I'm running PHP5 on Apache2 and Debian Lenny. I installed the php_http package from the debian repo, however, I still can't use that function in my php scripts! The package also doesn't show up under phpinfo(). I tried installing it from PECL, but I could not. Is there some procedure for enabling these extensions in PHP? Kind of like a2enmod for apache? Note: This is a repost from http://forum.slicehost.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=4650 I also tried adding extension=pecl_http.so to my apache2/php.ini with no effect. Any guesses?

  I've been using svn on the command line for 5+ years, but I'm thinking of switching to GUI. The two kings of Mac subversion apps seem to be Versions and Cornerstone.   Since IE is getting rid of conditional comments in version 10, I'm in dire need to find a "CSS hack" targeting IE10 specifically. NB! It has to be the selector that's getting "hacked" and not the CSS-properties. In Mozilla, you can use: @-moz-document url-prefix() { h1 { color: red; } } While in Webkit, you usually do: @media screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio:0) { h1 { color: blue; } } How would I do something similar in IE10? • Hiding Extended program check errors for Includes in ABAP

  How can I stop the ABAP extended program check (SLIN) from reporting errors in include libraries that I may not have write access to? I like to leave the extended check with as few errors & warnings as possible, usually when I intentionally use something in a way that may cause a warning, I use the pseudo comments ("#EC * etc) to hide the message. This also tells the next programmer that I at least thought about the possible consequences of using something in a particular way. When these statements are in includes that I have no control over, I would like to hide the messages without changing the offending libraries/includes.

  Like everyone else ;), I need to test my code on IE6 and IE7. Now IE8 has some great tools for developer, which I'd like to use. I'd also like to start testing my code with IE8, as it will soon be released. The question is: how to run IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine. So far with IE6 and IE7 I've been using Multiple IE. But people have reported (see comments on the page linked in the previous sentence) issue with IE6 after installing IE8. Those errors are related to focus in form fields. Running IE7 wouldn't matter so much as IE8 can use the IE7 rendering engine, but we still need IE6. Any recommendation on how to IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine?

• WPF: IEditableCollectionView and CanAddNew and empty collections

  We were having some issues with the wpf datagrid and IEditableCollectionView (although this question applies to using IEditableCollectionView and ItemsControl) When you have a collection with no items in it, the IEditableCollectionView cannot determine what items should be inserted so it sets CanAddNew=false we found a solution here (buried deep in the comments) that goes like so : If you derive from ObservableCollection like this public class PersonsList : ObservableCollection<Person> { } you will find out that if the initial collection is empty, there won't be a NewItemPlaceHolder showing up on the view. That's because PersonsList cannot resolve type T at design time. A workaround that works for me is to pass type T as a parameter into the class like this PersonsList<T> : ObservableCollection<T> where T : Person { } This approach will place the NewItemPlaceHolder even if the collection is empty. I'm wondering if there is an interface i can implement on my collections that inform the IEditableCollectionView which type to create should i get an AddNew request.

  How can I make developers follow coding standards? In our company: I've given documents and they don't have the patience to read it and follow it. I've tried telling them again and again "please do it this way" they nod their heads, but still do it the wrong way We're doing a project for the third time and still they don't seem to follow it properly. I'm now so tired of this. What is the best way to set standards for coding and make sure they follow them? Edit: There are just about 10 developers in my team. They're over pressurized and do not take the time to put comments and do the code neatly since there's more pressure to complete the product from our management. What would be the solution for this?

After completing three chapters and starting fourth (ActionScript), and not having enough patience to wait till completing chapter 22 I started to practice :) One bit that I have most worries about right now is the the dual coding mode (MXML vs ActionScript) Please have a look at my code below (it compiles via mxmlc design.mxml, second file 'code.as' should be in same directory) and advise if the separation I used between visual design and code is appropriate. • How to remotely connect to jmx on tomcat using ssh tunnelling and not break ehcache...

  I've followed the instructions in the following link to create my own RMI registry and jmx server on a single port inside tomcat. According to the comments, I need to set -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=localhost. Once I do that, I can indeed connect to my server via jconsole using ssh port forwarding. http://blogs.sun.com/jmxetc/entry/connecting_through_firewall_using_jmx However, I've found it has the very bad side affect of breaking our ehcache replication which uses RMI. It fails complaining that it cannot bootstrap from remote peer localhost. I'm guessing because the peers all have their rmi server hostname set to localhost from setting -Djava.rmi.server.hostname=localhost. Does anyone have a possible workaround to this problem?

• Documenting applications - automation / semi-automation for screenshots?

  For me one of the biggest bores of being a developer is writing user documentation. (I am referring to the stuff that gets exported into PDF files files that ship with the product, not comments in code here). The task off adding or updating new bits of text to the existing documentation is OK. However having to take screenshots of select screens can be quite a tedious process. Is there a way to automate or even semi-automate the process of taking screenshots? The main requirement is the ability to crop images such that they contain only the window, including window manager areas (such as the title bar). The secondary requirement is that any format is OK, so long as it can be exported to PDF. EDIT: Any more biters?

• Embedded Linux or eCos ?

  One way to look at it - embedded Linux starts with desktop Linux & ditches the parts not needed for embedded systems (is this actually true?), whereas eCos is designed from the ground up for embedded systems. Now, assume an ARM processor, probably ARM 7 - does performance make a difference? Actually, we talking a very low load system, max 500 transactions a day. Any advantages of one over the other (or FreeRTOS, etc)? Stability, maturity, performance, development tools, anything else? All that I can think of is that if I am certain that I will never port to another o/s, then if I go with embedded Linux, I don't need an o/s abstraction layer to allow me to do unit testing on host (desktop Linux box). Any thoughts or comments? Thanks.
