  It’s been a while since I had to use an ODBC driver.  Today I learned… That when you install a 32 bit ODBC driver on a 64 bit Windows but it doesn’t show up in the Data Sources admin tool because this tool displays only 64 bit drivers. That you can manage a 32 bit ODBC driver on a 64 bit Windows using the 32 bit Data Sources admin tool located here: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe That 64 bit software can’t use 32 bit ODBC drivers.   Windows 7 offers a very cool feature where you can connect multiple devices to any wired and wireless network connection (hotel, cable, 3G, UMTS, EDGE, WIFI, RJ45, Ethernet, etc.) by turning your own laptop into a wireless AP (Access Point) to relay those devices not directly connected to the internet. • Maximum file size for iFrame in IE7

  I've got a "super secure" javascript downloader* that I wrote, and it usually works alright. But I noticed, while trying to download a 90 meg file with it on a client's machine that on IE7, it's getting hung up about 1/3rd of the way through. I've never tried to send a file that large through the iFrame and it works fine in other browsers. Is there a size restriction on files that IE7 can read in an iFrame? * It's really just a PHP line that sets header("location: http://someplace/downloadbigthing.exe"); after it does some logging and verification.

• Wine installation on 12.04 LTS

  Installed wine from the Software Center and kept getting errors when trying to load windows programs. Uninstalled and did the apt-get installation of the latest version (1.5.7) Ran Wine configuration and get a "Failed to connect to the mount manager, the drive configuration cannot be edited" If i try to install a program it immediately goes to "Internal error" Any Ideas or possible solutions would be appreciated. • How to install Visual Python?

  I'm a Linux newbie but I'm determined to get my favorite applications on my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. I just installed Cinnamon. I'm trying to install Visual Python and it requires Python 2.7. I followed the instructions on the VPython site but the Wine application isn't extracting anything from the Python .msi file. From the first line wine start /i python-2.7.5.amd64.msi /qn TARGETDIR=~/Python27 ALLUSERS=1 it says fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented. I created that Python27 directory so I know it exists and it's empty. I know Ubuntu already has Python 2.7 so I just tried running the VPython.exe file but it says "This program can only be installed on versions of Windows designed for the following processor architectures: x64." My Toshiba satellite has a 64-bit processor. Could anybody help?

  I am not very experienced with non-windows operating systems, so please if you can answer, consider me to be a complete newbie with this. I have a Ubuntu Server 12.04, I installed Wine on it so I could install some familiar programs with GUI on my Ubuntu. I installed Filezilla Server using Wine, that went fine, the server is running, but I cannot find the GUI anywhere. I know it is running because in the winefile, if I execute the filezille server.exe, it says it is already running. However I have not been able to configure anything on the filezilla server because I can't see it anywhere. What am I missing?

  I have some problems in my hand and would like to resolve them by myself (rather than hiring some professional, obviously due to cash problem!): build a really good website (planning to set-up my own start-up). build some good software (preferrably with exe installation files) on many mathematical and statistical techniques. To accomplish those tasks, is it worth to learn Python in advance level? I have advanced programming experiences with R and Matlab and VBA (and some sort of C), however not anything on Python. • Opening an XML in Unity3D when the game is built

  At the moment, my game can open up an XML file inside the editor when I run it. In my XMLReader.cs I'm loading in my file like so: _xmlDocument.Load(Application.dataPath + "\\HV_Settings\\Settings.xml"); This class also deals with what the XML should do once it has been read in. However, when I build the game and run the exe, this file isn't called. I know that I can store this file in the C drive, but I want to keep everything in one place so when I start to release what I'm working on, the user doesn't need to do anything. Am I doing something silly which is causing the XML not to be read?

• Can't set permissions for files on an NTFS partition

  I remember that I was able to run a Linux .exe that was placed on an NTFS partition earlier before I installed 10.10 RC. But if I try to run it now, I can't run it as it hasn't the execution permission. The bad part is that I can't change the permissions too. I'm chmod-ding +x but no change at all with its permissions. So this seems to be a bug? Any help? Though when I put it on ext4 partition, I can set the permission. But I want to do this as I did before, right from its default NTFS location.

• Mount exFAT partition in virtual guest machine

  I have a real Ubuntu 12.10 installation being virtualized under a Windows 8 host, by using the VBoxManage.exe internalcommands createrawvmdk method. I'm trying to mount an exFAT partition into the virtualized machine (which is the partition of shared work files), but even though I have fuse-exfat installed, and the partition is perfectly mountable while booting entirely into Ubuntu, I can't mount it while virtualizing it. 1- If I make a full vmdk image of the HDD, including all partitions, Ubuntu 12.10 "sees" the partition, and trying to mount it throws this error: Image: http://i.stack.imgur.com/AyUSn.png 2- If I make a machine with only the linux partitions, + the exFAT partition. Select winepulse.drv and change load order to 'disabled'. Now try to trigger your bug again, if it was a winepulse bug it shouldn't trigger any more. • Is Java easy decompilation a factor worth considering

  We are considering the programming language for a desktop application with extended GUI use (tables, windows) and heavy database use. We considered Java for use however the fact that it can be decompiled back very easily into source code is holding us back. There are of course many obfuscators available however they are just that: obfuscators. The only obfuscation worth doing we got was stripping function and variables names into meaningless letters and numbers so that at least stealing code and renaming it back into something meaningful is too much work and we are 100% sure it is not reversible back in any automated way. However as it concerns to protecting internals (like password hashes or sensible variables content) we found obfuscators really lacking. Is there any way to make Java applications as hard to decode as .exe counterparts? And is it a factor to consider when deciding whether to develop in Java a desktop application?

• What is the advantage of a programmers VM apart from portability

  I can understand the benefits of Java running on a JVM. Portability. Nice simple reason. But I have always been puzzled as to why Microsoft brought out their own version of a JVM - .NET. C# is supposed to be a fine language (haven't used myself) but could Microsoft have launched product to use native. ie to generate an exe? My colleague is learning F#. The reason it has to be a language which runs on .NET is because the Microsoft Lync API which will be used is only available on .NET. ie there is no C API for Lync. A cynical view may be that the reason is vendor lockin. F# will only run on a Microsoft platform (or C# for that matter) and so program is locked in. But maybe I am missing some other benefit of a VM platform?

  At the office, we extensively use VS2010 SQL Server 2008 Database Projects and SQL Server 2008 Server Projects  in our Visual Studio 2010 solutions. With Visual Studio 2012, those types of projects are replaced by the  SQL Server Database Project  using the SSDT (SQL Server Data Tools) technology. I started investigating the shift from Visual Studio 2010 to Visual Studio 2012 and specifically what needs to be done concerning those database projects in terms of painless migration, continuous integration and standalone deployment. I will write my findings in a series of 4 short articles: Part 1 will be about the database projects migration process and the cleaning up that ensues Part 2 will be about creating SQL Server 2008 Server Projects equivalents with the new SSDT project type Part 3 will introduce a replacement to the vsdbcmd.exe command used for deployment in our continuous integration process Part 4 will explain how to create standalone packages of SSDT projects for deployment on non accessible servers (such as a production server)

Think of it as a database, but one that takes advantage of domain specific information to outperform a convential database search (for example, with custom oracle indexing). We have a custom data structure for our data. Our protoype is a simple exe that constructs the database in memory each time it is run. We were thinking that perhaps this program would suffice, but augmented with sockets so it can listen for queries. This database will be static. Its contents will change infrequently. We expect queries, and the solution, to be delivered via a web service.

It will only give me a black screen and ask for log in user name and password and stays on the black screen. I've tried to fix it from a boot repair disk, which had generated a long report and then told me that Wubi.exe is not found. How can I retrieve my [revious installation, or fix it please? • How do I make Nautilus windows stick for drag & drop?

  When you drag and drop a folder with nautilus, you must carefully set both windows on non overlapping areas of your screen, otherwise selecting one folder will bring the windows to the front, hiding the second one. On Windows, doing so will stick the explorer.exe windows to the back and let you drag and drop the folder. I suppose it detect a long click to decide whether or not bring the window to the front. Is that possible with Ubuntu? Now I know that Nautilus now has split panels by pressing F3, but that not handy. Most of the time, you open a folder, THEN decide to copy. With split panel, you must decide, THEN split the panel and go to the right folder.

• Intermittent Copy/Paste Problem in RDP

  If you use RDP to remotely connect to your servers, you've probably encountered a clipboard issue where copy/paste stops working.  A quick Google search on the problem indicates you can easily fix the problem by logging out/logging back in or killing/restarting rdpclip.exe on the remote server.  Here's an article which covers this topic. But what do you do when copy/paste is intermittent?  It works one second, stops working for 5-30 seconds, and then on its own starts working again.  This is what’s occurring in our new non-production environment.  The DBA team is setting up 16 new physical servers and 5 new virtual machines.  I haven’t found a server where this ISN’T happening.  This intermittent copy/paste issue is driving me crazy!

  Just found this, if you’re using Azure 1.1,  which you probably will be if yo'u’ve moved to Visual Studio 2010. To change the default database to something other than sqlexpress for Development Storage do this - Look at this - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd203058.aspx At the bottom it states -   Using Development Storage with SQL Server Express 2008 By default the local Windows Group BUILTIN\Administrator is not included in the SQL Server sysadmin server role on new SQL Server Express 2008 installations.  Add yourself to the sysadmin role in order to use the Development Storage Services on SQL Server Express 2008.  See SQL Server 2008 Security Changes for more information. Changing the SQL Server instance used by Development Storage By default, the Development Storage will use the SQL Express instance.  This can be changed by calling “DSInit.exe /sqlinstance:<SQL Server instance>” from the Windows Azure SDK command prompt.

  I'm developing sites based on .NET platform. I usually deploy these sites on my local IIS, so that I can test them and see their functionality before going live. However, each time I restart windows, it seems that sites take a long time to run for the first time. I know about JIT and I'm also aware of this question, but it doesn't answer my question. Does JIT happens every time you restart windows? Is it related to creation of w3wp.exe process? Why sites are so slow for the first request after each restart?
