• Kernel panic while loading Mac OS X on VMWare

  I'm trying to run Mac OS X 10.6.3 on VMWare 7.1 from within Windows 7 64 bit. Trying to run the OS X doesn't work - shortly after booting VMWare announces the machine's death with this pop-up message: The CPU has been disabled by the guest operating system. You will need to power off or reset the virtual machine at this point. The console has a more interesting announcement: The real-time clock was not properly initialized on your system! With a dump of the detected CPU speed (~2.9 GHz), FSB (~94 MHz) and bus ratio (31). Somehow, the code that panics is documented in an accidental .diff file here. Apparently, it commits seppuku if the bus ratio is greater than 30. I underclocked my E6500 to a slower speed, but this apparently didn't make any difference. I can think of two possibilities right now: The CPU info being read is constant, and defines the maximum ability of the CPU. In which case it appears I'm screwed. VMWare presents its own CPU info to the machine, which I can perhaps somehow change. If so, how? If these sound completely off, that's because I'm a real newbie in these matters. Here's hoping you guys can show me the light :-)

• access an IP restricted service from a dynamic IP (Broadband modem) on a windows machine

  Hi, I dont know if this is the correct place to ask this question but here goes .. (please note that I am pretty much a newbie in terms of networking and I work primarily on the windows platform) I have been working on accessing and consuming some web services in C#/ASP.Net, these web services that I consume are IP restricted. Currently they allow access only from my work network (we have a static ip set up through which all our internet requests are routed). Every now and then we have people who go out and about and are stuck with using a usb dongle based internet connection and hence are not able to now access these web services that they are working on. What I would like to do is to provide some way for these remote workers to access the IP restricted web services using the static ip at our office. For example when the remote worker tries to access a service say http://exampleService.com .. the request gets routed to some box at our office and then out to the actual service. That way the service always sees the static ip of the office and not the dynamic ip that the remote user is actually using. I have done a fair bit of googling and its difficult to search for it as most of the results come back for dynamic DNS which is not really what I am looking for. I have also looked at a couple of posts on here namely Accessing IP restricted server from dynamic IP which does provide some insight but the fellow seems to have access to the source that does the ip restriction and is able to change the restrictions. In my case i dont have that access. another one that looked interesting was Static IP for dynamic IP the first answer seems exactly what I need but I dont know how I would go about doing the same on a windows machine. any help would be really appreciated. (am sorry about being soo noob-ish) PS: Right now everyone is using RDC/LogMeIn to access an internet connected machine in the office to manually check the webservice and getting work done. Which is a very tedious process.

  Newbie. Setting up a server for a law firm. Want to set up the folder structure as follows: Client 1 Name -- Matter 1 (i.e. setting up corporation) -- Matter 2 (i.e. divorce) -- Matter 3 (i.e. setting up trust) Client 2 Name -- Matter 1 Client 3 Name -- Matter 1 and so on. But the attorneys prefer navigating a folder structure, more based on what case type: Civil -- Client 1 Name (i.e. Smythe) -- Client 2 Name (i.e. Jones) -- Client 3 Name (i.e. Johson) -- Landlord/Tenant -- Client 1 Name (i.e. Jones) -- Client 2 Name (i.e. Johson) -- Class Action Suits -- Suit 1 -- Suit 2 Personal Injury -- Client 1 Name -- Client 2 Name -- Client 3 Name Criminal -- Client 1 Name (i.e. Smythe) I'd like to know if it's possible to set up the server with the first folder structure (it's more organized and easier to employ scripts), while having the second folder structure available for users who find it easier to deal with the same types of cases grouped together.

• Multi-select menu in bash script

  I'm a bash newbie but I would like to create a script in which I'd like to allow the user to select multiple options from a list of options. Essentially what I would like is something similar to the example below: #!/bin/bash OPTIONS="Hello Quit" select opt in $OPTIONS; do if [ "$opt" = "Quit" ]; then echo done exit elif [ "$opt" = "Hello" ]; then echo Hello World else clear echo bad option fi done (sourced from http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/Bash-Prog-Intro-HOWTO.html#ss9.1) However my script would have more options, and I'd like to allow multiples to be selected. So somethig like this: 1) Option 1 2) Option 2 3) Option 3 4) Option 4 5) Done Having feedback on the ones they have selected would also be great, eg plus signs next to ones they ahve already selected. Eg if you select "1" I'd like to page to clear and reprint: 1) Option 1 + 2) Option 2 3) Option 3 4) Option 4 5) Done Then if you select "3": 1) Option 1 + 2) Option 2 3) Option 3 + 4) Option 4 5) Done Also, if they again selected (1) I'd like it to "deselect" the option: 1) Option 1 2) Option 2 3) Option 3 + 4) Option 4 5) Done And finally when Done is pressed I'd like a list of the ones that were selected to be displayed before the program exits, eg if the current state is: 1) Option 1 2) Option 2 + 3) Option 3 + 4) Option 4 + 5) Done Pressing 5 should print: Option 2, Option 3, Option 4 and the script terminate. So my question - is this possible in bash, and if so is anyone able to provide a code sample? Any advice would be much appreciated.

• New monitor connected to HDMI adaptor doesn't show output after booting

  Hello out there in the multiple monitors’ world. I am a very old newbie in your world and need help. I just purchased a new Asus VH236H monitor and hooked it up the HDMI port of an ATI Radeon HD4300 / 4500 Series display adaptor. I left the old Princeton LCD19 (TMDS) hooked up to the DVI port of the same display adaptor. Both monitors displayed the boot sequence, after I fired good old Sarastro2 (Asus P5Q Pro Turbo – Dual Core E5300 – 2.60 GHz) up. The Asus lacked one half of a second behind the Princeton until the Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1 boot up was complete. Then the Asus displayed “HDMI NO SIGNAL” and went into hibernation. The Princeton stayed lit up as before. Both monitors are displayed on the “Screen Resolution Setup Display” and I plaid around with them for a while. The only thing I accomplished was to shove the desktop icons from the Princeton to the still hibernating Asus. The “Multiple displays:” is set to “Extend these displays”, the Orientation is “Landscape” and the Resolutions are set on both to the “recommended” one. Both monitors show that they work properly in the advanced Properties display. What am I doing wrong, what am I missing? Never mind the opinions about the different resolutions of the two monitors. I always can unhook the Princeton and give it to a Goodwill Store if I do not like the setup. I just would like to make it work. Any constructive help is very much appreciated, Thank you.

  I'm trying to setup nfs server on Fedora 17 and I'm getting "Program not Registered" error when I'm trying to mount. I guess the main reason for this is rpcbind. I'm a newbie in linux, so I don't know what info should I provide you with. • Hard wrapping in vim without joining

  Vim newbie here. How can I hard wrap plain text in vim (inserting actual linebreaks), respecting word boundaries, without joining existing lines? For example, given this: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. - Nulla cursus accumsan faucibus. - Donec dapibus dignissim ullamcorper. Integer nec malesuada diam. I'd like to get (with textwidth=30): Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. - Nulla cursus accumsan faucibus. - Donec dapibus dignissim ullamcorper. Also, for bonus points: when I create a brand new buffer, I get different wrapping behavior (lines beginning with - aren't wrapped specially) than when I open a file ending in .txt. What controls this? I don't notice any difference in the output of :set filetype? or :filetype.

• sendmail Name server timeout

  Complete sendmail newbie here... I've been trying to get mailing to work in PHP and I've root caused it down to sendmail's complaint about "Name server timeout": >sendmail -t -v >From: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >. gmail.com: Name server timeout [email protected]... Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery [email protected]... queued So it sounds like a DNS issue? But I can do a "dig mx gmail.com" and it will query successfully. Here's what confuses me... I can get sendmail to work two other ways. The first way is through telnet: >telnet 127.0.0.1 25 >Helo me >Mail from: [email protected] >Rcpt to: [email protected] >. message sent And the second way is by explicitly appending the sendmail.cf, but this is strange because it's the exact same file I use to configure sendmail to begin with: >sendmail -t -v -C/etc/mail/sendmail.cf But none of these solutions will resolve my PHP mailing... I am clueless as to what is going on... appreciate any help.

• JBoss 5 on AIX 5.3

  I am a very newbie for AIX and system monitoring. Actually our application currently run production on jboss 5.1 in AIX 5.3. Please check below configuration & system settings. AIX system configuration OS Level 5.3.9.0 (oslevel -g) Physical Memory size 24GB (svmon -G) Page space 4GB (lsps -s) processors 3 cores, Processor Type: PowerPC_POWER6, Processor Clock Speed: 4704 MHz (prtconf | grep Processor) Java version JRE 1.6.0 IBM AIX build pap6460sr10fp1-20120321_01 (SR10 FP1) (java -fullversion) JBoss configuration JBoss 5.1/JBoss ESB 4.11 Hornetq messaging with consumer flow control java opts : -d64 -Xms2g -Xmx4g -XX:MaxPermSize=1024m Sometime we observe very strange behavior in the JBoss that freeze without any error logs. Also server log stop without any further trace. We also not able to get thread dump (kill -3) and its not generate at that point. (kill -3 xxxxx works in normal circumstances) Only option available for us was restart the jboss server and its seem all messages that were in queues during the freeze time process after restarting. We try tweak some of setting in JBoss hornetq, we though issue was there. Hornetq Stuck By Default. But we haven't any luck and also unable to isolate the issue in any point. We looking at tool like nmon for monitoring this but no clue is that good enough to do so. Please provide some point to investigate this issue. Thanks

Assuming that enemies are defined in their own xml file, how would you define when an enemy spawns in the level? Would it be based on time? Updates? Distance? Currently I do this based on "level time" (the amount of time the level is running - pausing doesn't update the time). The type is defined in EnemyType while SpawnTime is the "level time" this wave should appear. NumberOfSpawns and SpawnOffset is the number of enemies that will show up and the time it takes between each spawn respectively. This could be a good idea or there could be better ones out there. I'm not sure. I would like to see some opinions and ideas. I have two problems with this: spawning an enemy correctly and creating a level editor. The level editor thing is an entirely different problem (which I will probably post in the future :P). As for spawning correctly, the problem lies in the fact that I have a variable update time and so I need to make sure I don't miss an enemy spawn because the spawn offset is too small, or because the update took a little more time. I kinda fixed it for the most part, but it seems to me that the problem is with how I store the level. So, any ideas? Comments? Thank you in advance.

• Why my 2nd ip from traceroute is not answering the ping anymore?

Well, I think it is odd that the 2nd ip is not returning the ping. I looked some old tracerout logs to see what was the 2nd ip. The ip was: 10.19.0.1 So, what this 2nd ip stand for? How can I find why it is not answering the ping? I don't understand it, if does not answer the ping, how can the packets continue (yeah newbie question)? edit: well, because the hope 3 have a ping of 8 ms the hop 2 request time out should really not be a problem. But it is still odd that the 2nd hop stopped to answer ping request. So my doubts are: 1. Were the ip 10.19.0.1 is from? 2. Why it stopped to answer ping requests? 3. How can hop 7 be smaller than 6 and 8 smaller than 7 and 6!?? Shouldn't the pings be higher for each hop? Like: hop 3 time should be the sum of the hops before it plus its own time (hop 3 = 1+2+3) ??

• Upgrading openSUSE 11.1 with Plesk Panel 9.3 to PHP 5.3

  Hello, I'm running a VPS with openSUSE 11.1 (i586). On the VPS is Parallels Plesk Panel 9.3.0 installed. The current PHP-version is PHP 5.2.11. I want to upgrade PHP to PHP 5.3, but I can't find good instructions on how to do this. If I check for updates in Zypper, it says this is the latest release. In the Plesk Updates isn't an update either, both via the webbased interface and the command line interface. On Software.openSUSE.org I can find packages for PHP 5.3.1 in both the server:php/server_apache_openSUSE_11.1-repo and the server:php/openSUSE_11.1-repo (can't post the link because I'm a newbie here). But if I add one of those to Zypper, I still don't see an update. Is there here somebody who knows how to do this? And is it completely safe to update that way? I don't want to end up with a broken VPS... Thanks! Jonathan

• What to do when launchpad is down?

  As I am writing this (Friday, November 8, 2013 at 9:59:18 PM EST) launchpad is down. Apparently there is a power failure (https://twitter.com/launchpadstatus/status/398980619880775680). I tried running sudo apt-get update on my Ubuntu install. However, I simply get stuck on this: Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net precise InRelease 100% [Waiting for headers] Being a Ubuntu newbie, I tried to point my sources.list file to a different source. I backed up the original sources.list and then deleted the entire file to start afresh. I then added the following lines to it: deb http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ precise main deb-src http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu/ precise main I figured that since I have a different mirror, there would be no problem updating. I was wrong. I get stuck at the same place. I have several questions: Why do I need to hit launchpad? I do not reference it in my sources.list file at all. Is this something where the mirror redirects me to launchpad? Is there a good article out there that I can read on how exactly this whole apt-get update thing works that will help me understand why it is hitting launchpad? Is there any way to get my Ubuntu to update while launchpad is down? Isn't there any redundancy for the launchpad servers?

• How to configure router to give XBox top priority / most bandwidth?

  Hi all - Newbie here so go easy... and apologies in advance if I blow the community etiquette / rules! Here's what I'm trying to do: I have a "D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N" wireless router and an XBox 360 w/ the old-style wireless connection thing (usb attachment)... I want to configure my router / network to give my XBox as much bandwidth as it wants, whenever it wants. I have tried giving the XBox a unique IP (within my network) and then tweaking the router to treat that IP as a top priority application (using the router's QOS stuff). Problem is whenever I turn off the xbox, I can't connect to the network the next time I start it up. It seems the only reliable setting in the XBox is to use "Automatic" for the IP settings within the Network Configuration area. Supposedly the D-Link ships with default settings that attempt to recognize a game console and give it top priority... but i've not seen good results (lots of stuttering / lag when someone else jumps online, etc). Any suggestions? thanks again!

• Limiting access in Silverlight\Pivotviewer

  I'm going to deploy a pivotviewer application. As some of you might know this silverlight application load a .cxml index file for a group of images. My need is to make .cxml file and image files not accessible for the user. Now, if I don't have a need I usually code like this in C# and the file is hosted in the documentroot: _cxml = new CxmlCollectionSource(new Uri("http://www.myurl.it/Collection.cxml", UriKind.Absolute)); This means that my cxml and then the images are available by http for everyone who knows the URI. I'm a newbie to server configuration, so any help/hint would be deeply appreciated. Someone suggested me to take the files out of the root, but it seems like I can't go to pick them up if they are not a URL in Silverlight. At least I didn't managed to understand how. Someone else suggested me to play with web.config file to hide URLs, but I don't really know where to start. My question is, what's the best practice to hide my stuff? Obviously I can edit the question if you need more details.

• Deployment and Ownership issues

  As an extreme newbie, I am having difficulty managing ownership and permissions on my first box. What I can't figure out is how to deploy using one user, we will call him deploy and operate my php application with www-data user. Currently as it stands, I know my server runs as www-data through this function <?php echo(exec("whoami")); ?> but I am having to chown between deploy and www-data every time I deploy. There has got to be an easier way to deploy with one user and still run as www-data. EDIT: Here is the output from ls- l on the folder in question. You will see user deploy and group www-pub, the group is from an attempt to add the two different users to a new group and chown one of them in the hopes that they both would have the permissions (newb alert) drwxrwxr-x 4 deploy www-pub 4096 Mar 7 01:41 example.com I am using capistrano for deployment under the user deploy then once its done i chown to www-data, otherwise I can't use php to manipulate files. I am also unsure how to even change which user apache is running.

• permanent NAS-mount in Ubuntu - wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock

  My network drive shows up in the file browser, just like my external usb-harddrive. Moving, running and editing files works. Hovering over it shows smb://lacie-2big/nasdisk . BUT, when I want to save a file, the drive doesn't come up as an option. All I can see is my other places, including my usb-harddrive. I am a complete newbie but I am GUESSING that it has something to do with the mount not being a "real" mount but just a shortcut to the smb location. So I ran the tutorial at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently about how to "mount a network drive permanently". edited my fstab to //LaCie-2big/nasdisk /media/nasmount cifs guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode 0 0 and running sudo mount -a gave me the following error: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //LaCie-2big/nasdisk, missing codepage or helper program, or other error (for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might need a /sbin/mount. helper program) In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Now thats a very helpful error message, BUT, before I go any further, I'd be really thankful if one of you could tell me if I'm even in the right ballpark, or if my actual need: to be able to download files (ie torrents) directly to the drive, can be possible as it is already. I'm wondering if it's possible to set up the following non-conventional apache virtualhost (for a Django app): -- If a file exists in the DocumentRoot (/var/www) it will be shown. So if /var/www/foo.html exists, then it can be seen at www.example.com/foo.html. -- If file does not exist, it is served via a virtualhost. I'm using mod_wsgi with a WSGIScriptAlias directive that points to a Django app. So if there is no /var/www/bar.html, www.example.com/bar.html will be passed to the Django app, which may or may not be a 404 error. One option is to create an Alias for each individual file/directory, but people want to be able to post a file without adding an alias, and we want to keep the above URL structure for legacy reasons.   Hi Guys, I have a Ubuntu 9.04 Linux running on Freescale's i.MX515(ARM Cortex based) board with me. There were about 250 updates pending and I did that today, well some of the updates failed because of the infamous errors: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.   Before you say it: yes, this "question" has been asked other times. However, I could not fine many of such questions and not that easily, and those I found had similar results. What I'm trying to say that there are no comprehensive lists of well written Open Source projects, so I decided to set some requirements for the entries (one or possibly more): Idiomatic use of the language in which they are written The project should be lightweight. Not as in "a few kbs", as in "clean" and possibly following the UNIX philosophy, making an efficient use of resources and performing its duty and nothing more. No code bloat, most importantly. Projects like Firefox and GNOME wouldn't qualify, for example. Minimal reliance on external, non-standard libraries, with exceptions for some common FOSS libraries (curses, Xlib, OpenGL and possibly "usual suspects" like gtk+, webkit and Boost). Reliance on well-written libraries is welcome. No reliance on proprietary software - for obvious reasons (programs that rely on XNA, DirectX, Cocoa and similar, for example). Well-documented code is welcome. Include link to web interfaces to their repositories if possible. Here are some sample projects that often pop up in these threads: Operating Systems Plan 9 from Bell Labs: More or less, the official "sequel" to UNIX. Written in C by the same people who invented C! NetBSD: The most portable BSD implementation, written in C and also a good example of portable and organized code. Network and Databases Sqlite: Extremely lightweight and extremely efficient, one of the best pieces of C software I've seen. Count the lines yourself! Lighttpd: A small but pretty reliable web server written in C. Programming languages and VMs Lua: extremely lightweight multi-paradigm programming language. Written in C. Tiny C Compiler: Really tiny C compiler. Not really comparable to GCC or Clang but does its job. PyPy: A Python implementation written in Python. Pharo: OK, I admit it, I'm not really a Smalltalk expert but Pharo is a fork of Squeak and looked rather interesting. Stackless Python - An implementation of Python that doesn't rely on the C call stack - written in C (with some parts in Python) Games and 3D: Angband: One of the most accessible roguelike codebases around here, written in C. Ogre3D: Cross-platform 3D engine. Gets bloated if you don't skip the platform-specific implementation code, otherwise is a pretty solid example of good C++ OO. May not be as clean as the other projects but it can teach you A LOT. Before you ask: I didn't mention Linux because it has become quite bloated in the last few years, Linus has also confirmed it. Nonetheless, it'd be a great educational read the same, even if for other reasons. Same for GCC. Feel free to edit or wikify my post.
