• Algorithm for determining grid based on variably sized "blocks"?

  I'm trying to convert a set of "blocks" in to a grid-like layout. The blocks have a width of either 25%, 33%, 50%, 66%, or 75% of their container and each row of the grid should try to fit as many blocks as possible, up to a total width of 100%. I've discovered that trying to do this while leaving no remaining blocks in the original set is very hard. Eventually, I think my solution will be to upgrade/downgrade various block sizes (based on their priority or something) so they all fit in to a row. Either case, before I do that, I thought I'd check if someone has some code (or a paper) demonstrating a solution to this problem already? And bonus points if the solution incorporates varying block heights in to its calculations :) Thanks!

Tasks check every minute with a third party application through web services, retrieving data which is written in the database, then the data is forwarded to it's original destination. • Google not showing any pages from my site in the index after three months [on hold]

  Despite having a sitemap and using Google Webmaster Tools, it has been over 3 months and my site has not been added to the Google index at all. Here's the site: www.famouslefthandedpeople.com As far as I know, I have done everything correctly. However, there must be something I am overlooking that is preventing Google from indexing the site. I do not have a robots.txt file, so allow/disallow isn't the issue. Although the content of the site is sparse, it is original and not duplicated internally or externally so Panda/Penguin should not be a problem. I have reviewed the answers at Why isn't my website in Google search results? and I don't think it applies here. If it matters, I am using WordPress to create the site. What other factors should I be looking at in order to troubleshoot this?

• Is there a way to forward emails associated with a domain without a mail server?

  A client owns example1.com but wants to also purchase example2.com and have it point to their original site at example1.com. No problem there. But they also want any emails going to example2.com to be forwarded to their counter parts at example1.com Eg: if someone emails [email protected] it will be forwarded to [email protected] They only way I can think of doing this at the moment is to set up host for example2.com and then set up mail forwarders in cpanel. But this seems a bit excessive and costly. Does anyone know another, cheaper way of doing this?

• How to show history of edits for a post like StackExchange? [on hold]

  Using: ColdFusion 10, JQuery, IIS 7.5 I'm creating a system where people can submit their text articles to me and I can apply edits/corrections and send it back to them. However I don't want to lose their original work. I want them to see where I made edits. StackExchange pretty much does what I want by showing when a post was edited and then you can see the history of changes. Can anyone please suggest how to go about doing this? Everytime an edit is made, it has to be written to the database. But how do I show what was edited? It could be 1 word in a whole paragraph... how would I highlight this? I just need some pointers if possible at what to think about and what to use if anyone has the time to help me out.

For instance, If I'm interested in modifying the behavior of the button or the desktop icons, or whatever it is: How do I get the source code? I guess I need the package name and download it. But how can I get the package name? Let's say I want the button package, where do I look to get the package name? is there a list on a website or a help file?   Following my previous question, I decided to migrate my andengine game to libdgx to have the desktop option. The game assets were planned, at first, to use a 1080x600 resolution and I raised that to 1200x800 which is native for many tablets and would look better on monitors. I followed this blog aproach regarding aspect ratio, which worked nicely on the desktop version, but running the android version (on my smaller tablet), the background would still appear on the original size being cropped by the smaller screen size. How can I force the resize of the background (or for what matter, of everything) on android to fit the screen?

  I'd like to join three ideas into one interesting and sometimes useful feature. There was a question about using multiple passwords earlier this year, but it didn't receive much attention. I'd like to ask the question again after showing an interesting and new way to use the feature.   In some code I'm reviewing, I'm seeing stuff that's the moral equivalent of the following: public class Foo { private Bar bar; public MethodA() { bar = new Bar(); bar.A(); bar = null; } public MethodB() { bar = new Bar(); bar.B(); bar = null; } } The field bar here is logically a local variable, as its value is never intended to persist across method calls. However, since many of the methods in Foo need an object of type Bar, the original code author has just made a field of type Bar. This is obviously bad, right? Is there a name for this antipattern?

  There are several websites providing service of searching for free domains (websites, not registrars). I wonder where is the source of these searches? This search cannot be based on local database, as it needs live data (of available domains). The only possible way (to me) is to fetch every query from the original NIC (e.g. nic.com), but I was unable to find an API for this service. How to find a source to write a script for domain searching?

• netbeans doesn't display properly after permission change

  So basically i installed netbeans 7.2 through the site and everything worked fine. I then changed permissions for /var/www so that my apache2 could write on it without problems. After that netbeans started behaving strangely and giving errors and the fonts where all ugly. So i re-installed it but the problem continued. I have options in Tools that don't even show up anymore. If i open with Sudo the fonts come up nicely again, but the amount of options still isn't the same as the original installation Can anyone help me?

• Xubuntu - Apps Become Unresponsive Intermittently

  Possibly Relevant Information: XUbuntu 12.04 LTS (precise) XFCE 4.8 AMD Graphics (Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci, Kernel modules: fglrx, radeon) The primary symptom of this issue has been my active rdesktop session to stop responding while everything else appears to work normally. I have been killing rdesktop and re-launching it, with it freezing after a seemingly random time period. The fastest was within seconds. The longest was a couple hours, although it's usually within a few minutes. That being said, I have occasionally seen the terminal and web browsers also become unresponsive to keyboard input. They respond to clicks and will accept middle clicks (to paste text) without issue while remaining unresponsive to the keyboard input. I have been able to restore all functionality, including rdesktop, by switching workspaces and typing on the other workspace, then returning to the original workspace. What is being reset when I do this? What does this work-around/solution indicate may be the problem?

• Would it be possible to make an android app like this?

  I'm fairly new to android development and I'm not sure if the functionality I have in mind for my next project is actually feasible. I wanted to make a simple study guide app...when a user is browsing the web on their phone and they come across information they want to save to their study guide they would be able to highlight the sentence,long-click the highlighted text, and see an option to add it to their study guide(a pop-up list would appear). there would be more functionality than just this, for instance with-in the app you could create different study guide topics (biology,math, English..ect). But in general is it possible to have an app that is accessible by long-clicking when your browsing the web (as opposed to opening the App manually in order to use it.) -- If not, could I make it so you can open a browser within the app to do what I've described? This is going to be a school project so I don't care if it's totally original, I just want to make something simple and practical for practice. -- Thanks in advanced to anyone who helps!! :D

  Basicly my problem emerges when I try to load Facebook and Yahoomail, I don't know why Both browsers Firefox and Chromium don't load these webpages, but this problem only happen with UBUNTU, when I'm in windows no problem. Note: The other webpages like youtube, gmail etc load without any problem. • How do I convert a partially transparent image into polygons?

  I'm using GLEE2D, a level editor allowing me to import images, scale them, rotate them, and position them onto layers and export the data into XML format. However, it does not tell me objects' boundaries. I can calculate them, but only given the original image's polygons. How do I get polygons of objects in a transparent image? An example object (I outlined it): How would I turn the object, knowing the scaled size of the image, into polygons? Is there an algorithm for this? I'll use OpenGL to draw them.

I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

  Lets say I have library "A2" as a dependency in a project. Library "A2" is derived from library "A1" where someone has done few changes to the library "A1" 's source code. Lets say there is a new version of "A1" I want to use the new version but no modification to its sourcecode at all. I am planning to identify what are the changes done to the original library when deriving library "A2" out of it and decorate the latest version of the library with those changes.
