• Business Object desgin

  I have a question about how I setup my BO's. I setup the BO's to contain all of my properties of the object as well as the business logic to satisfy the business rules. I decided to make all of the methods static, but I'm not sure if that was the right decision. Someone told me to split my BO's into an Entity Object of just properties and then a BO of just methods that do business rules, and don't make the methods static. Does anyone have some experience with the way i've set this up? Any examples of how it might work better for future growth? Thanks!

• A Good Final High School AP Computer Science Programming Project?

  Hey guys this question might seem very specific but I am in need of some ideas for a project to do for my last month or so in my AP Computer Science class. I've been looking at some college final ideas and a lot of them just seem plain boring. At first I thought about writing a IRC client in JAVA but I wouldn't really be learning anything "new" that would help me in the future. Then I thought about doing IPhone/touch apps (I don't have an adroid phone and I can easily get my hands on an itouch) but I would need ideas to make apps for that. I want to do something that is going to feel trivial and need some explanation but will also help me in the long run learning new concepts in computer science. If you guys could help out I would greatly appreciate it. I really only have a month to do this project so try to keep the project inside of that range. Also, I don't mind learning new languages. Thanks :)

But I have a modal/popup box which has some elements also having ".elem_class" and these dont get in the scope of findAll/each as they are loaded into the dom thru ajax. How do I apply the same to dynamically loaded elements as well? I am using Prototype Library. (I have used JQuery's Live function which keeps track of all future elements, but need to achieve something similar using Prototype) Thanks.

• Extracting a Rails application into a plugin or engine

  I have a Rails 2.3 application which I would like to extract into a plugin, or engine. The application has user authentication, and basic cms capabilities supported by ancestry plugin. I want to extract the logic for the application into a plugin/engine so that I can use this code for future projects, with a different "skin" or "theme" if required. I'm not entirely sure I actually understand the difference between plugin and engine concepts, so that would be a good first point. What is the best approach, are there any good starting points, links, explanations, examples that I should follow. Also, with the release of R3 to consider, is there anything that I should be aware of for that, with regards to plugins etc. I am going to start off by watching Ryan's http://railscasts.com/episodes/149-rails-engines but obviously thats over a year old now, so one of the challenges I'm faced with is finding the most up to date and relevant information on this subject. All tips and help gratefully received.

• Display Computer Info on an ASP.NET Page

  I want to build a page for end users to visit (in our MPLS Network) and it show the following information in regards to them: Computer Name OS Disk Space Memory IP Address Active Directory User Name Password Expiration Time (As defined by Global Policy) Maybe a few other things such as Trend Micro Office current version vs. their version, # of MS Updates needed (we utilize WSUS), and a few other things in the future. My question is how would I pull this information from the user when they visit the page? What is the proper function for this? Anyone have examples they wish to share for me to learn by if possible?

• Looking for a good implementation that will access multiple databases simultaneously

  I just want to find out if there's a good implementation (in C#/ASP.NET) on how to access my records from my different databases simultaneously. I have this simple application which suppose to search on these databases, then, display the record if a certain keyword is matched. I have like 5 databases (currently using MySQL) all in all and will be expanding it on the future (might be changing to SQL Server). I am fully aware on how to search on a single database, while I'm still learning how do it in multiple databases. Any tips, comments or suggestions?

• How to obtain specific Excel object library without the corresponding Office version installed.

  I am developing a Excel automation app that read and write to Excel spreadsheet. I have Office 2007 installed on my machine. I therefore can reference the Excel 12.0 Object Library and the Excel 5.0 Object Library. I don't want to use Excel 5.0 because it's really quite old and poorly documented. Therefore I'm referencing Excel 12.0. However the target machine have Office 2003 installed and therefore only have Excel 11.0. So when I compile my program it crashes on the target machine since the referenced library are different. I was wondering is there a way I could obtain the Excel 11.0 without installing Office 03? I tried to find answers from msdn and microsoft support page but couldn't find anything? This is quite strange since it could also happen in the future where developers has newer editions of Office than clients?

• Django User "per project" group assignation

  Hi, Here's my problem : my site has users, which can create projects, and access other user's projects. Each project can assign different rights to users. So, i could have Project A : user "John" is in group "manager" , and Project "B" user "John" is in group "worker". How could I use the Django User authentication model to do that ? From a SQL point a view, what i would like is to be able to add "project_id" in the primary key for the "auth_user_groups" table. I don't think profile is of any help here. Any advice ? UPDATE : "worker" and "manager" are just two examples of the permission group (or "roles") that my application defines. There will be more in the future. Eg : i will probably also have "admin", "reporting", etc...

  Hi, I have all written code and i want to this code standarise by php code sniffer. I would like to know what is the best way to start with it . I had installed it but when i run the command phpcs /path/to/code/myfile.php in the command line i got the last one hundered line error from 310 to 410 . but if i want to see the starting errors of any line error how can i see that . Mostly errors are 322 | ERROR | Spaces must be used to indent lines; tabs are not allowed 322 | ERROR | Line indented incorrectly; expected at least 8 spaces, found 2 How can i solve these things easily and in future it don't repeat , what it saying that i should not use tab , and use space , by using space it will take time . and how can i start with basic standard ,because don't want to utilise more time in this right now. • Passing get values mangles my urls

  Just upgraded from 1.3 to 2.0.3 and I'm trying to migrate all the changes. I'm noticing that the following line echo $this->Html->link('Quote', array('controller'=>'crm_quotes', 'action'=>'index', $lead['id'].'/'.$crmContact['CrmContact']['id']), null); builds the url "/crm_quotes/index/15/21". When I click the link I'm taken to url: "/crm_quotes/index/15%2F212 so it's replacing the characters with the html # but it's ultimately breaking the link. When I manually edit the URL to the correct one: "/crm_quotes/index/15/21" the page loads. Can someone enlighten me? Should I be using the url function rather than link? I have a lot of pages that need multiple parameters passed in the url. I was using named parameters but after reading some comments by Mark Story I decided to stop the named parameters as he hinted at their possible removal from future versions.

• How to gather usage statistics for iPhone app?

  I am in the process of releasing my first iPhone app. It's a simple utility, I'd just like to gauge the release process, app lifetime and trends, just so it can help make more realistic choices in future apps. I think it would be nice to have usage statistics in addition to download stats from Apple. For example, how many times is the app opened by each user, what iPhone OS version do they have, etc. I think some of it would simply be to try and connect to a known URL on one of my domains, passing it anonymous information (let's say, connect to http://mydomain.net/stats?app=myApp&version=1.0.0&os=3.1.2&used=18). My questions are: is that forbidden in any way by Apple's rules? (none that I could find, at least) does that seem reasonable to you? are there existing frameworks that would do that simpler/better that writing my own code?

• What is a good programming language for testers who are not great programmers?

  We would like to create some simple automated tests that will be created and maintained by testers. Right now we have a tester who can code in any language, but in the future we might want any tester with a limited knowledge of programming to be able to add or modify the tests. What is a good programming language for testers who are not great programmers, or programmers at all? Someone suggested LUA, but I looked into LUA and it might be more complicated that another language would be. Preferably, the language will be interpreted and not be compiled. Let me know what you think.

• AES acceleration for Java

  I want to encrypt/decrypt lots of small (2-10kB) pieces of data. The performance is ok for now: On a Core2Duo, I get about 90 MBytes/s AES256 (when using 2 threads). But I may need to improve that in the future - or at least reduce the impact on the CPU. Is it possible to use dedicated AES encryption hardware with Java (using JCE, or maybe a different API)? Would Java take advantage of special CPU features (SSE5?!), if I get a better CPU? Or are there faster JCE providers? (I tried SunJCE and BouncyCastle - no big difference.) Other possiblilities?

  Hi, I'm thinking about the GlassFish platform for my new app. My app env. doesn't have a big volume of data to handle, but a lot of users writing/reading the same data A very volotile portion of the data updates every 200milsec by diff users. Therefore I'd like that type of data to be in memory only and accessible to the whole app My questions: How do I use a global object in memory with GF? a. use a static variable object - for that I guess I need to make sure GF is running on only 1 JVM -- how to I configure GF to run on 1 jvm? b. use HttpContext - same as a. • How useful is a 'pure' MVC implementation?

  I work at a company that provides custom made 'CRM'-like software. We are currently redesigning/redeveloping the software with the hopes that it will look more modern and be easier to develop and customize for future clients. Currently it takes a long time to customize each new application. There is a presumption that the reason it takes so long is because of the amount of business logic that is present in the 'view' layer. To some extent I can vouch for this being true, but symptoms don't always reliably point out a cause. There was a suggestion that if we just move the business logic to the controller layer and use pure view (we use java J2EE and struts) as in implementing struts tags instead of calling the bean layer and iterating objects right on the jsp - etc etc. Before I start advocating we go forward with this, I wanted to get a feeling for what other people thought. Does a "pure" implementation of the MVC (especially emphasis on decoupling the controller and the view) provide a cleaner, easier to develop and change code base?

• Where do current (not HTML5) browsers stand on clipboard support for non-text data?

  I don't really know where the line is between the browser itself and HTML/JS here. But let's say I want to write a web-app where I can copy a chunk of data from MSPaint (select, CTRL+c) and paste it into a web-page in some way... ultimately the point is the data goes to the server without me having to save it as a file first. Where are the problems here - browsers or client-side technologies? For instance if JS can't do it, could Flex/Silverlight? Advice on future technology welcome, but doesn't really answer the question - where are we right now with IE/FF/Chrome and JS/Flex/SL?

• correct way to turn EAR module into OSGI bundle

  Greetings to all! There is a necessity to turn part of EAR (namely - war) into OSGI bundle and retain it's interoperability. Glassfish 3.0.1 already has osgi-web-container module and I succeeded to deploy standalone OSGI war. But in case of of ex-enterprise war it looks a bit difficult to me. What do I do with EJB calls from inside future OSGI war? Is it enough to replace @EJB injections with true JNDI lookups? What about APIs and libraries shared across EAR? I could split and rearrange them, but still I will have at least one jar needed by both EAR and OSGI war. Duplicate, make it as OSGI-bundle itself and make it available to ear somehow, place it GF domain's library path? Any other ideas, advices which could make that hybrid working? • Is it good practice to put private API in the .m files and public API in .h files in Cocoa?

  Many of my classes in my current project have several properties and methods that are only ever called from within the class itself. Also, they might mess with the working of the class depending on the current state of the class. Currently, all these interfaces are defined in the main interface declaration in the .h files. Is it considered good practice to put the “private” methods and properties at the top of the .m files? This won't ever affect anything since I am very likely the only person ever to look at this source code, but of course it would be interesting to know for future projects.

• Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome. I've highlighted a number of advanced manufacturing technologies such as CAD etc. However, I want to bring cloud computing into the report just to score some extra points. I am not sure how one would bring together cloud computing with the advanced technologies though. Basically what would be the process of integrating these technologies into a cloud computing "environment"? Say the organisation buys a CAD package, how could they make use of cloud computing here?

• Are default _id fields for MongoDB documents always 24 characters?

  As part of my application requirements, I have a limit of 30 characters for an ID field. This is out of my control and I am wondering if the MongoDB default _id fields will work for me. It appears as though the default _id field is 24 characters long. That works for me, but I am wondering if this is likely to change in the future. I am well aware that things can always change, but, for the next year or two, can I expect there to be 24 character default _id fields?

• Question about Content Delivery Networks CDN

  I've built a javascript code that my clients will be installing on their website and they will be calling a file from my server. I'm wondering if it would be better to host the javascript file on a CDN, instead of on my server? The benefits would be better response time and a much higher chance that it will always be available. However, In the future, if the CDN was acquired or went out of business I would have a number of clients linking to a file that doesn't exist. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

• What languages, frameworks, and technologies have you used to implement document searching?

  I am at a new company and one of our goals is to implement a document search portal for our team and our clients. I am a bit worried that if we use an external service provider like Salesforce or some other ECM in the cloud there will be a lot of integration work in the future. From a client perspective, these documents will also exist in the same bucket as our structured content (stored in the DB, not a MS Word doc). If you have implemented document searching, what languages, frameworks, and technologies have you used? Do you have any failure stories? I don't have a problem using something out of the box, but I think it is important that we have control over the documents and the API to access them. I would like to use Rails if we go fully custom.
