    Which one is more acceptable (best-practice)?: namespace NP public static class IO public static class Xml ... // extension methods using NP; IO.GetAvailableResources (); vs public static class NP public static class IO public static class Xml ... // extension methods NP.IO.GetAvailableResources (); Also for #2, the code size is managed by having partial classes so each nested class can be in a separate file, same for extension methods (except that there is no nested class for them) I prefer #2, for a couple of reasons like being able to use type names that are already commonly used, like IO, that I don't want to replace or collide. Which one do you prefer? Any pros and cons for each? What's the best practice for this case? EDIT: Also would there be a performance difference between the two?

  • GNU General Public License (v2): can a company use the licensed software for free?

    When a library is released under the GPL v2, can a company use it internally for free? If they develop software based on it, do they have to release it under the GPL, even if they don't distribute it? Can they make money by using (not distributing) internally developed software that links to the GPL'ed library, without any compensation for the author? I am looking for a software license that only allows non-commercial uses (copy, modify, link to); the resulting derived programs must also be free for non-commercial uses. Is there any software license that does this for non-commercial uses, and prevents any commercial use (including using the software in order to make money)? It looks like the Creative Commons licenses are flexible enough to do something close to that, but I've read against using them for software. What do you think?

  • In Cocoa (or maybe GUI development in general) how do you specify an arbitrary number of things tile

    I'm new to creating GUI's, everything I've done up until this point is using the command line. I'm trying to create a port of minesweeper to the macintosh, as an experiment, and I've got the CLI working, but I'm running into walls everywhere with the gui. The first thing it seems I have to do, however, is be able to tile n x m 'boxes' for grid - and I'm not sure how to do that. The information is ready to be handed to it, but I don't know where to do it, or how. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for sites/Cocoa development books, feel free to drop them in here...   • Is there any good reason for private methods existence in C# (and OOP in general)?

    I don't mean to troll but I really don't get it. Why would language designers allow private methods instead of some naming convention (see __ in Python) ? I searched for the answer and usual arguments are: a) To make the implementation cleaner/avoid long vertical list of methods in IDE autocompletion b) To announce to the world which methods are public interface and which may change and are just for implementation purpose c) Readability Ok so now, all of those could be achieved by naming all private methods with __ prefix or by "private" keyword which doesn't have any implications other than be information for IDE (don't put those in autocompletion) and other programers (don't use it unless you really must). Hell, one could even require unsafe-like keyword to access private methods to really discourage this. I am asking this because I work with some c# code and I keep changing private methods to public for test purposes as many in-between private methods (like string generators for xml serialization) are very useful for debugging purposes (like writing some part of string to log file etc.). So my question is: Is there anything which is achieved by access restriction but couldn't be achieved by naming conventions without restricting the access ?

    We are working on trying to get some Ruckus Access Points to work correctly on our network. Currently our network is as follows: VLAN 10 - Servers VLAN 11 – Computers/DHCP VLAN 12 – Voice VLAN 13 – Guest We use Dell PowerConnect 6248P switches for our switches. Port settings are as follows: ZoneDirector 1100 is plugged into this port. Should be accessing the server VLAN and then allowing all other traffic. interface ethernet 1/g2 classofservice trust ip-dscp description 'Ruckus ZoneDirector 1100' switchport mode general switchport general pvid 10 switchport general allowed vlan add 10 switchport general allowed vlan add 11-13 tagged exit Access point is plugged into this port. The port has to be on VLAN 11 in order to get DHCP. interface ethernet 1/g16 classofservice trust ip-dscp description 'Ruckus - IT' switchport mode general switchport general pvid 11 switchport general allowed vlan add 10-12 switchport general allowed vlan add 13 tagged exit If we tag the traffic from the SSID as VLAN 11 data fails. If we leave the SSID tagged as 1 the data flows correctly. Are there problems with passing tagged traffic to untagged ports? We are looking to see what we can do to get the SSID tagged as 11 instead of 1. Any suggestions?

  • Code Contracts: Unit testing contracted code

    Code contracts and unit tests are not replacements for each other. They both have different purpose and different nature. It does not matter if you are using code contracts or not – you still have to write tests for your code. In this posting I will show you how to unit test code with contracts. In my previous posting about code contracts I showed how to avoid ContractExceptions that are defined in code contracts runtime and that are not accessible for us in design time. This was one step further to make my randomizer testable. In this posting I will complete the mission. Problems with current code This is my current code. public class Randomizer {     public static int GetRandomFromRangeContracted(int min, int max)     {         Contract.Requires<ArgumentOutOfRangeException>(             min < max,             "Min must be less than max"         );           Contract.Ensures(             Contract.Result<int>() >= min &&             Contract.Result<int>() <= max,             "Return value is out of range"         );           var rnd = new Random();         return rnd.Next(min, max);     } } As you can see this code has some problems: randomizer class is static and cannot be instantiated. We cannot move this class between components if we need to, GetRandomFromRangeContracted() is not fully testable because we cannot currently affect random number generator output and therefore we cannot test post-contract. Now let’s solve these problems. Making randomizer testable As a first thing I made Randomizer to be class that must be instantiated. This is simple thing to do. Now let’s solve the problem with Random class. To make Randomizer testable I define IRandomGenerator interface and RandomGenerator class. Writing tests for randomizer IRandomGenerator solved problem with testing post-condition. Now it is time to write tests for Randomizer class. Writing tests for contracted code is not easy. The main problem is still ContractException that we are not able to access. Still it is the main exception we get as soon as contracts fail. Although pre-conditions are able to throw exceptions with type we want we cannot do much when post-conditions will fail. We have to use Contract.ContractFailed event and this event is called for every contract failure. This way we find ourselves in situation where supporting well input interface makes it impossible to support output interface well and vice versa. ContractFailed is nasty hack and it works pretty weird way. Although documentation sais that ContractFailed is good choice for testing contracts it is still pretty painful. As a last chance I got tests working almost normally when I wrapped them up. Can you remember similar solution from the times of Visual Studio 2008 unit tests? Cannot understand how Microsoft was able to mess up testing again. Here is the test list after running these tests. Conclusion Code contracts are very new stuff in Visual Studio world and as young technology it has some problems – like all other new bits and bytes in the world. As you saw then making our contracted code testable is easy only to the point when pre-conditions are considered. When we start dealing with post-conditions we will end up with hacked tests. I hope that future versions of code contracts will solve error handling issues the way that testing of contracted code will be easier than it is right now.

  • Generic Func<> as parameter to base method

    I might be losing the plot, but I hope someone can point me in the right direction. What am I trying to do? I'm trying to write some base methods which take Func< and Action so that these methods handle all of the exception handling etc. so its not repeated all over the place but allow the derived classes to specify what actions it wants to execute. So far this is the base class. public abstract class ServiceBase<T> { protected T Settings { get; set; } protected ServiceBase(T setting) { Settings = setting; } public void ExecAction(Action action) { try { action(); } catch (Exception exception) { throw new Exception(exception.Message); } } public TResult ExecFunc<T1, T2, T3, TResult>(Func<T1, T2, T3, TResult> function) { try { /* what goes here?! */ } catch (Exception exception) { throw new Exception(exception.Message); } } } I want to execute an Action in the following way in the derived class (this seems to work): public void Delete(string application, string key) { ExecAction(() => Settings.Delete(application, key)); } And I want to execute a Func in a similar way in the derived class but for the life of me I can't seem to workout what to put in the base class. I want to be able to call it in the following way (if possible): public object Get(string application, string key, int? expiration) { return ExecFunc(() => Settings.Get(application, key, expiration)); } Am I thinking too crazy or is this possible?     12.04 LTS, on a dell mini 10. Install stable until about a week ago. Updated about 1x a week, sometimes more often. Several days ago, I booted up and the system was no longer working correctly. All these symptoms occurred simultaneously: Cannot run (exit on opening, every time): Update manager, software center, ubuntuOne, libreOffice.     Hello I'm trying to develop business logic for a dynamic site using nusoap on server side (because I need wsdls, and PHP SOAP extension can't generate wsdls), and PHP SOAP extenstion on client side. However, I can't get even login and getRole functions right. When i try to invoke client, I get following message Uncaught SoapFault exception: [Client] looks like we got no XML document in [some paths]... Wsdl does exist on server side, and client does read it (when I put wrong url for wsdl, I get an error). Can anyone help??

  • Why does Sitecore throw a NullReferenceException exception when I redirect to one of its pages?

    I'm running Sitecore 6.1 on Windows 2008, IIS7, and I'm trying to use the URL Rewrite Module to do a redirect. When I enable the rule and hit the URL that triggers it, I get a YSOD. The same rule works perfectly on a non-sitecore site on the same machine. According to the Failed Request Trace, the rewrite module does its thing just fine, but then Sitecore throws an exception, even if the redirect points to another server. This is probably a result of something I have misconfigured, but I just can't understand why it doesn't work. The details from the YSOD are below.     I get this error when I try to run my app: 2010-04-29 13:49:01.355 MyApp[56123:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSUnknownKeyException', reason: '[<MyViewController 0x5112b10> setValue:forUndefinedKey:]: this class is not key value coding-compliant for the key toolbar.' MyViewController used to have an IBOutlet called 'toolbar' that connected to a UIToolbar object in a nib. I decided I no longer needed the toolbar or the nib so I removed them from the project. But Xcode seems to still want to refer to 'toolbar'. Where might the reference to toolbar be if I no longer use a nib? I can synthesize a dummy 'toolbar' property to appease Xcode, but I want to avoid this kind of ugly hack.

    Hi, I am using ADO.NET (.NET 1.1) in a legacy app. I know that DataAdapter.Fill() opens and closes connections if the connection hasn't been opened manually before it's given to the DataAdapter. My question: Does it also close the connection if the .Fill() causes an Exception? (due to SQL Server cannot be reached, or whatever). Does it leak a connection or does it have a built-in Finally-clause to make sure the connection is being closed.
