  How can I do daily backups for my VisualSVN Repos? Its on a Windows Server 2003 machine with VisualSVN Server, I was thinking about just doing an xcopy of the folder C:\Repo but I'm not familiar enough with svn to know if that will cause issues. Should I use dump or hotcopy or both?

• EC2-like virtualisation platform with non-RDP access

  I'm looking into setting up a few small VMs. The trouble is the software I intend to install on them (Cisco VPN Client) blocks out networking (other than to the target VPN destination...) with no workaround. This means that Remote Desktop or other methods of connecting to VMs that go via the Internet (e.g. GoToMyPC, LogMeIn) are a non-starter. What I'm really looking for is an EC2-like platform but which gives direct access to the VM through (for example) Hyper-V Manager. Sadly the only way they all seem to offer to remote control the VMs is direct access via Remote Desktop, whereas I need to be one layer above that (if that makes sense). A viable alternative would be to run virtualisation software within a Windows EC2 instance; obviously hardware virtualisation is impossible but I wonder if there are any software virtualisation platforms that could be run and that would work. Does anyone know if something like this exists/is possible? Thanks! C

• Lesser known Ubuntu desktop applications

  So, this Ubuntu software center comes with 100s of applications of all types. In this version they have disabled rating, making it hard to find how good it is. I found gnome-shell today, that seemed awesome. There are other ones, less well known, For eg, Abiword is far better than Open Office Org Word processor in many ways. (Altho' I dont like word processors themselves.) What are the other less well known applications that you use and like. One application per answer.

What I need to do: Manage 3 repos: unstable, testing, stable Self-service functions that let users add/remove/promote packages (promote means moving a package unstable?testing or testing-stable). ACLs that control which users/groups may add/remove/promote packages. Automatically re-sign packages as they move repo to repo (since the GPG key for "stable" should be different than "unstable") Automatically run "createrepo" to update repodata when needed. Suggestions?

• Is there a way to correct wrongly typed password / abort the operation while on password prompt in the console in MINGW32?

  I sometimes mistype a password when being asked for it, e.g. by Git when pushing to remote repository. The password is not displayed (even masked as asterisks) in the console. Is there a way either to correct the password, or to abort the operation? Backspace for editing and CtrlC for aborting do not seem to work. I want to save some time instead of waiting for the remote authentication to fail, or providing a bad password, then Enter, CtrlC. Edit: Unfortunately CtrlU doesn't work for me (MINGW32 @ Windows XP). Any other guesses?

• installing wxGTK-devel on CentOS 5.4

  I'm trying to install wxGTK-devel on CentOS and since it's not in the base repo I added RPMForge. But now I'm getting these broken dependencies. I don't want start tampering with separate rpms because I suspect it will make thing worse. I remember installing this package from RPMForge without a problem several months ago. • Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services error

  Hi! I have a Win2K3 machine which I want to access via remote desktop. When I try remote desktop on another machine the session just ends as soon as it attempts connection. I never see the log-on sceeen or anything. It just returns to the remote desktop connection dialog. I have checked the service on the target machine and it's up and running, so how can I determine the error? Is there any way to re-install terminal services and see if it just fixed?

• Why does SOS update a file to a previous revision?

  This question is about the SOS version control system: I have a file that always updates back to revision 1. For instance, to check out the latest revision I have to specifically ask for that revision. I have checked in several revisions up to revision 5. However, everytime I do an SOS update, it reloads revision 1. How can I request that the file updates to the latest revision rather than an older one?

• RDP connections keep dropping

  I have an odd problem on my notebook (HP Pavilion dv7). My Internet connection seems OK for the most part. But lately I've been having trouble with Remote Desktop connections. While I can connect to remote computers, the connection is very flaky, and usually drops after a few seconds. Sometimes it'll successfully reconnect automatically, and sometimes not. But even after successful reconnection, it'll just drop again after a few seconds. This appears to be independent of which RDP host I'm connecting to, and which network I'm connected to locally, whether wireless or wired. Other remote control apps like TeamViewer and Ammyy seem to work fine. Any ideas?

• Media Center is sending duplicate #'s when changing channels

  I recently switched from cable to DirecTV (satellite). I went through the "Set up TV signal" in Media Center, and I went through the manual setup of the remote as it didn't recognize the DirecTV remote. All seemed okay, except sometimes (often - about 1/2 the time) when I select a channel in Media Center's guide it sends 5527 instead of 527 or 5446 instead of 546 - so it doesn't change the channel correctly. (I see the numbers show up on the TV screen before the channel changes.) I tried re-learning the remote, but the problem is still there. (Media Center is changing channels through the IR Blaster attached to the front of the DirecTV box.)

• Disable prompts while installing a Debian package

  Hello all, How can i disable totally the prompts that appear while installing a Debian package, i've used all the options that i've found but there are some packages that are still prompting. I'm using this command: apt-get -y --allow-unauthenticated --force-yes -o DPkg::Options::="--force-overwrite" -o DPkg::Options::="--force-confdef" install x11-common Why the x11-common package is still prompting? how can i get rid of these prompts? • Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! • Controlling TV Channel Through Computer

  I'm passing my TV input through my computer so that I can use the video stream in an application I'm creating which then outputs to my TV. E.g. Sky Digibox/FreeView box - Laptop - TV Where on my laptop I'll be using the stream in a WPF application so I can overlay XAML objects onto it. My question is, what would be the best way for me to send the signal back to the box to say change the channel for example? I don't want to have to use the remote, I want the computer to handle everything. Is there a standard cable these boxes have that could take what would normally be a remote control signal and use that as input instead? Or would I have to go down the route of looking at some sort of Infared LED to send the signal recreating the remote? Apologies if this is not clear enough, let me know and I'll try and be more precise.

• Multiple desktops in Windows

  I'm running a program that uses WatiN to automate file uploads to different websites. I currently run it on a machine that I remote into via the standard Remote Desktop Connection in Windows - once I start an upload, I go ahead and continue using my local machine. Soon, I'll be needing to run it locally. The problem is that it requires focus (which is unavoidable due to WatiN utilizing SendKeys) and I of course don't want to render my machine useless while it runs. So, my question: Is there any way to emulate the multiple desktops/workspaces that have been in many Linux distros for some time? I tried VirtuaWin to no avail. Alternatively, is there a way to remote into a machine from itself? Or is there some other means of creating a separate session on the same machine that does not steal focus? Running Linux is not an option, and a VM would be overkill.

They may have a very different structure, but could contain many duplicate files. An example would be a structured collection of photographs on one hand (the destination), and just a tmp directory in which you unload everything from your camera on the other (the source). Maybe some of these files are already in the structured directory tree. I would like to rsync from the source to the target, such that only the files from the source that are not in the destination at any location are copied.

  Skip to the "specific question" as needed. Some background: The scenario: I have a set of products with a "drill down" filter (Query Object) populated with DDLs. Each progressive DDL selection will further limit the product list as well as what options are left for the DDLs. For example, selecting a hammer out of tools limits the Product Sizes to only show hammer sizes. Current setup: I created a query object, sent it to a repository, and fed each option to a SQL "table valued function" where null values represent "get all products". I consider this a good effort, but far from DDD acceptable. I want to avoid any "programming" in SQL, hopefully doing everything with a repository. Comments on this topic would be appreciated. Specific question: How would I rewrite this query as a Dynamic Query? A link to something like 101 Linq Examples would be fantastic, but with a Dynamic Query scope. I really want to pass to this method the field in quotes "" for which I want a list of options and how many products have that option. (from p in db.Products group p by p.ProductSize into g select new Category { PropertyType = g.Key, Count = g.Count() }).Distinct(); Each DDL option will have "The selection (21)" where the (21) is the quantity of products that have that attribute. Upon selecting an option, all other remaining DDLs will update with the remaining options and counts.

  This is in a web application environment: An initial request is able to successfully complete, however any additional requests return a "Session is Closed" response from the NHibernate framework. I found a similar issue on SO here. I too am using WebSessionContext in my implementation, however, no solution was provided other than writing a custom SessionManager. For simple CRUD operations, is a custom session provider required apart from the built in tools(ie WebSessionContext)?

• Document management, SCM ?

  Hello, This might not be a hard core programming question, but it's related to some of the tools used by programmers I suspect. So we're a bunch of people each with a bunch of documents and a bunch of different computers on a bunch of operating systems (well, only 2, linux and windows). The best way these documents can be stored/managed is if they were available offline (the laptop might not always be online) but also synchronized between all the machines. Having a server with extra reliable storage be a "base repository" seems like a good idea to me. Using a SCM comes to my mind and I've tried Subversion, and it seems to be a good thing that it uses a centralized repository - but: When checking out the total size of the checkout is roughly double the original size. Big files or big repositories seem to slow it down. Also I've tried rsync, which might work - but it's a bit rough when it comes to the potential conflict. Finally I've tried Unison (which is a wrapping of rsync, I think) and while it works it becomes horribly slow for the big directories we have here since it has to scan everything. So the question is - is there a SCM tool out there that is actually practial to use for a big bunch of both small and big files? If thats a NO - does anyone know other tools that do this job? • Architecting ASP.net MVC App to use repositories and services

  Hello, I recently started reading about ASP.net MVC and after getting excited about the concept, i started to migrate all my webform project to MVC but i am having a hard time keeping my controller skinny even after following all the good advices out there (or maybe i just don't get it ... ). The website i deal with has Articles, Videos, Quotes ... and each of these entities have categories, comments, images that can be associated with it. I am using Linq to sql for database operations and for each of these Entities, i have a Repository, and for each repository, i create a service to be used in the controller. so i have - ArticleRepository ArticleCategoryRepository ArticleCommentRepository and the corresponding service ArticleService ArticleCategoryService ... you see the picture. The problem i have is that i have one controller for article,category and comment because i thought that having ArticleController handle all of that might make sense, but now i have to pass all of the services needed to the Controller constructor. So i would like to know what it is that i am doing wrong. Are my services not designed properly? should i create Bigger service to encapsulate smaller services and use them in my controller? or should i have an articleCategory Controller and an articleComment Controller? A page viewed by the user is made of all of that, thee article to be viewed,the comments associated with it, a listing of the categories to witch it applies ... how can i efficiently break down the controller to keep it "skinny" and solve my headache? Everything are using Unity to inject dependencies (ISessionFactory in repositories, repositories in services and services in controllers) and works fine. But, it's very common I need a method in service to get only object in my repository, like this (in service class): public class ProductService { private readonly IUnitOfWork _uow; private readonly IProductRepository _productRepository; public ProductService(IUnitOfWork unitOfWork, IProductRepository productRepository) { this._uow = unitOfWork; this._productRepository = productRepository; } /* this method should be exists in DDD ??? It's very common */ public Domain.Product Get(long key) { return _productRepository.Get(key); } /* other common method... is correct by DDD ? */ public bool Delete(long key) { usign (var tx = _uow.BeginTransaction()) { try { _productRepository.Delete(key); tx.Commit(); return true; } catch { tx.RollBack(); return false; } } } /* ... others methods ... */ } This code is correct by DDD ?
