• How to use auto login in a remastered LiveCD?

  I have been creating a custom live CD of Ubuntu 11.10 using remastersys, everything goes well except that the live session asks for a login. the login is automatically set as "custom" and the password is blank. this is fine, but I would rather it went direct to the desktop in a live session as you would expect from other distro live cds. I have asked on the remastersys forums, the question has gotten a lot of views, but no answer as of yet, I am wondering has anyone here remastered a distro and come across the login problem, and if so, how did you fix it?

• How to Keep SEO Score from Dropping with Duplicate Content

  I'm hoping that someone has a solution for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm working on a travel agency web site and there's a "Overview" section for each cruise line. These overviews are located on the index page for each cruise line. Here's my issue: The company is creating a search engine that includes details on each cruise line. Their write-ups on each cruise line are great, so I'd like to include the overview they created for each cruise line, rather than having to create all new ones. However, I don't want duplicating their content to negatively affect the SEO scores of the pages they originally put this content on. It's gong to duplicate, since each page that's dynamically generated by their search engine is going to include a section about the cruise line (where I'd want to place the overview). Question: Is there any way that I can include these overviews (ideally, copying the exact HTML that they've already implemented) without the search engines indexing those particular code sections? I'd want the rest of the search result pages to be indexed...just not the section of each page that contains this duplicate code. I saw something about using a span class named robots-nocontent in Yahoo (not sure if this also applies to Bing) and googleon / googleoff tags in Google. Is this the best solution? I'm open to any suggestions, thanks!

• How to recover organic position in Google results after server down?

  I have several sites that were doing quite well in terms of organic SEO rankings. I have the important sites setup in Google's Webmaster tools. Long story short, the system was down for about two weeks. Now in AdSense and Analytics, I am seeing that the page views are SLOWLY increasing. and I would like to know if there is anything I can do now to try to expedite the process of regaining those positions. Since there were several errors from that server, is it possible that Google will now rank any site from that IP address lower due to those two weeks of errors? Is this something that I just have to let ride out? Thanks.

Here's the very simple model: class Project(models.Model): code = models.CharField(max_length=30) description = models.CharField(max_length=60) class Employee(models.Model): project = models.ForeignKey(Project) employee_id = models.IntegerField() country_code = models.CharField(max_length=3) severance = models.IntegerField() Due to regulations in some European countries, I'm not allowed to keep employee-level severance information in a database that sits on a box outside of that country. In Django, how do I manage the need to have my Employee table split across multiple databases based on an Employee attribute (i.e. country_code) in a way that doesn't impact anything else in the project (e.g. views, templates, admin)?   I am writing a SOAP based ASP.NET Web Service having a number of methods to deal with Client objects. e.g: int AddClient(Client c) = returns Client ID when successful List GetClients() Client GetClientInfo(int clientId) In the above methods, the return value/object for each method corresponds to the "all good" scenario i.e. A client Id will be returned if AddClient was successful or a List< of Client objects will be returned by GetClients. But what if an error occurs, how do I convey the error message to the caller? I was thinking of having a Response class: Response { StatusCode, StatusMessage, Details } where Details will hold the actual response but in that case the caller will have to cast the response every time. What are your views on the above? Is there a better solution? ---------- UPDATED ----------- Is there something new in WCF for the above? What difference will it make If I change the ASP.NET Web Service to a WCF Service?

Well back on the subject I have recently joined Ubuntu-AU (Australia) LoCo team and it is great! Basilar it is a Ubuntu loco community group and just before the my first time being at a meeting I was emailing the admin and he said that there was a stop for a team reporter and I put my hand up and he said 'yes'. He was actually going to ask at the team meeting I would have said no way! But because I saw it before hand and I asked him I wanted to do it. • Drupal node access for anonymous users

  I've never used Drupal before so this may be something that can easily be remedied, and that would be awesome. My problem is that a block, containing node information can't be viewed by anonymous users (unregisterd/not logged in), gives a "You are not authorized to access this content." message, but shows up for logged in users. The nodes that the block contains are events, so the block shows events for the next week. I've checked the users access settings but can't find anything that could possibly remedy this. I'm using drupal core 6.26, Event 6.x-2.x-dev, Event views 6.x-2.4 If anyone has any information, or solutions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

The code is scattered everywhere. There is code in the Controllers, in the models and even in the views. The application uses PROPEL as an ORM. What makes this really difficult is that the Controller may not be directly calling the table, but it may be instantiating a model class that calls that table. Is there an educated way to approach this crazy task? Note: Searching for the table name won't provide a solution because if a model uses that table I wouldn't know which Controller is using that model.

• How to build an API on top of an existing Rails app with NodeJs and what architecture to use?

  The explanation I was recently hired by a company that has an old RoR 2.3 application with more than 100k users, a strong SEO strategy with more than 170k indexed urls, native android and ios applications and other custom-made mobile and web applications that rely on a not so good API from the same RoR app. They recently merged with a company from another country as an strategy to grow the business and the profit. They have almost the same stats, a similar strategy and mobile apps. We have just decided that we need to merge the data from both companies and to start a new app from scratch since the RoR app is to old and heavily patched and the app from the other company was built with a custom PHP framework without any documentation. The only good news is that both databases are in MySQL and have a similar structure. The challenge I need to build a new version that: can handle a lot of traffic, preserves the SEO strategies of both companies, serve 2 different domains, and have a strong API that can support legacy mobile apps from both companies and be ready for a new set of native apps. I want to use RoR 3.2 for the main web apps and NodeJs with a Restful API. I know that I need to be very careful with the mobile apps and handle multiple versions of the API. I also think that I need to create a service that can handle a lot IO request since the apps is heavily used to create orders for restaurants at a certain time of the day. The questions With all this in mind: What type of architecture do you recommend me to follow? What gems or node packages do you think will work the best? How do I build a new rails app and keep using the same database structure? Should I use NodeJS to build an API or just build a new service with Ruby? I know that I'm asking to much from you guys, but please help me by answering any topic that you can or by pointing me on the right direction.   I have two goals set up for my site in Google Analytics: one to download the demo of my software, and the other to buy the full version. I'm having trouble getting statistics on how often the download leads to a purchase. This seems like something the multi-channel funnel is perfect for (as in this question)---I expect that it takes multiple visits for the demo download to convert into an order. However, I can't seem to narrow down the multi-channel funnel data into only those that have one goal followed by another. If it matters, I'm tracking the ordering action as a page view (i.e., someone views the "Thanks for ordering" page) and the demo download as an action (which fires when someone clicks the "download" button).   I have two domains associated with the same hosting account. Domain A was the one I had purchased when I first set up my website, but I didn't like it all that much and it was getting low ranks, and so I bought domain B and 301'd links from domain A to domain B. Now I would like to know if there is any way I can filter page views on Google Analytics based on the domain used to access the website, so that I can know if it is worth to keep the old domain associated with the account. Is there any easy way I can do this?

• Powermapper alternatives and google analytics?

  Whats a good application to map the hierarchical structure of a website and maybe get some google analytic action going on? Powermapper is pretty expensive and the trial version didnt seem particularly good at importing google analytics CSV files as advertised. In fact, out of the 1000 pages mapped, exactly 0 were successfully imported. I dont really need all the features Powermapper offers anyway, so the price tag is a bit much. All I really need is like, a simple visual representation of my (automatically generated) site structure (like a hierarchical site structure) and the ability to integrate my google analytic stats (page views mostly) with it.

Overview of requirements: There are 3 diff environments (DEV, TEST and PROD) which have a folder called 'common' that users across all envs. There are multiple servers in those 3 envs and we want to store their server environment specific configuration files in Clearcase. The executables files are different for each environment. Thus there will not be cross delivery require between dev/test/prod. Any thoughts on how we can approach this? Is keeping it simplest is the best approach here? One component to one vobs as (DEV_Serv1, TEST_Serv1, PROD_Serv1, Dev_Serv2, Test_Serv2 and etc)? OR Have multiple components VOB? One other thing is developers here like to use snapshots views.

• Transferring users and search engines to a new domain

  I've been asked to take over the maintnance of an existing site that's being reworked. At present it's serving localised content for several languages, but via a fairly unhelpful mechanism that means essentially search engines only have it indexed in English and any deep links will de facto appear in English as well. So, new localised sites are being built under separate domains - not just for this, there's other benefits. What we're then looking to do is to redirect users correctly to the new site, where appropriate. For humans this isn't a problem. We can send them through a gateway page on their first site visit, grab their language preference and put it in a cookie, then redirect them to the new localised content as soon as it's available. For search engines, this isn't so good... In principle I'm happy to simply bypass the gateway page and redirect known spiders to the new site, but this means we're serving radically different content (different URL even!) to human and robot users. Won't this therefore be regarded as cloaking and cause us grief? Anyone know a better way to handle this?
