• Can you figure out the password hashing scheme?

  I have two passwords and two resulting hashes. I can't figure out how the hash is derived from the password. I don't know if salting is used. I don't know if the password is hashed as a integer value or as a string (possibly Unicode). Password: 6770 Hash: c12114b91a3841c143bbeb121693e80b Password: 9591 Hash: 25238d578b6a61c2c54bfe55742984c1 The hash length seems to suggest MD5. Anybody has any ideas what I could try? Note: This is not for hacking purposes. I'm trying to access a service through an API instead of it's desktop client, and I can't figure out how to compute the password hash. Currently instead of using my real password I'm sending directly the hash.

  I have a query SELECT assetid, type_code, version, name, short_name, status, languages, charset, force_secure, created, created_userid, updated, updated_userid, published, published_userid, status_changed, status_changed_userid FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = 7 which doesn't work and throws ERROR: operator does not exist: character varying = integer LINE 4: FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = 7 I can get it to work by doing SELECT assetid, type_code, version, name, short_name, status, languages, charset, force_secure, created, created_userid, updated, updated_userid, published, published_userid, status_changed, status_changed_userid FROM sq_ast WHERE assetid = '7' Please note the quoting of the 7 in the WHERE clause... I am deploying an huge application and I cannot rewrite the core... similarly I don't want to risk changing the type of the column... I'm no Postgres expert... please help... Is there an option for strict casting of columns???

• Check if there are any repeated elements in a array recursively

  I have to find recursively if there is any repeated element in an integer array v. The method must have the following signature: boolean hasRepeatedElements(int[] v) I can't see any way of doing that recursively without having to define another method or at least another overload to this method (one that takes for example the element to go after or something). At first I thought about checking for the current v if there is some element equal to the first element, then creating a new array with L-1 elements etc but that seems rather inefficient. Is it the only way? Am I missing here something?

• Why doesn't GCC produce a warning when assigning a signed literal to an unsigned type?

  Several questions on this website reveal pitfalls when mixing signed and unsigned types and most compilers seem to do a good job about generating warnings of this type. However, GCC doesn't seem to care when assigning a signed constant to an unsigned type! Consider the following program: /* foo.c */ #include <stdio.h> int main(void) { unsigned int x=20, y=-30; if (x > y) { printf("%d > %d\n", x, y); } else { printf("%d <= %d\n", x, y); } return 0; } Compilation with GCC 4.2.1 as below produces no output on the console: gcc -Werror -Wall -Wextra -pedantic foo.c -o foo The resulting executable generates the following output: $ ./foo 20 <= -30 Is there some reason that GCC doesn't generate any warning or error message when assigning the signed value -30 to the unsigned integer variable y?

  I have a table "tbluser" with 2 fields: userid = integer (autoincrement) user = nvarchar(100) I have a multithreaded/multi server application that uses this table. I want to accomplish the following: Guarantee that field user is unique in my table Guarantee that combination userid/user is unique in each server's memory I have the following stored procedure: CREATE PROCEDURE uniqueuser @user nvarchar(100) AS BEGIN BEGIN TRAN DECLARE @userID int SET nocount ON SET @userID = (SELECT @userID FROM tbluser WITH (TABLOCKX) WHERE [user] = @user) IF @userID <> '' BEGIN SELECT userID = @userID END ELSE BEGIN INSERT INTO tbluser([user]) VALUES (@user) SELECT userID = SCOPE_IDENTITY() END COMMIT TRAN END Basically the application calls the stored procedure and provides a username as parameter. The stored procedure either gets the userid or insert the user if it is a new user. Am I correct to assume that the table is locked (only one server can insert/query)?

• MVP - asp.net - passing information via views - confused

  Hi, I've just started to play around with MVP in asp.net. One thing I quite cant figure out is how do I pass information, i.e. an integer variable from one view(webform) to another. Let's I have a customerlistView which is mapped to a customerlist.aspx page. From it I select a customer and it's record id. Say I want to display the customer's details in another view (i.e customerDetailView, customerdetail.aspx). How do I achieve that ? Does that mean customerlistView would call the presenter of the customerdetail and cause a page redirect ? Any ideas ? thanks

• SQL Server - Compare int values in a select clause

  This is what I thought would be a simple select clause, however the following is giving me grief! I am using SQL Server 2008. Basically I want to compare two integer values and return the boolean result in the select clause. Here is a simple example: DECLARE @A INT DECLARE @B INT SET @A = 1 SET @B = 2 SELECT @A = @B Currently the only output is "Command(s) completed successfully." Where I reasonably believe it is assigning @A to @B. I thought this would be simple but have not been able to achieve this. Any help would be great! Thanks

• Why is it bad to use boolean flags in databases? And what should be used instead?

  I've been reading through some of guides on database optimization and best practices and a lot of them suggest not using boolean flags at all in the DB schema (ex http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Top10SQLPerformanceTips). However, they never provide any reason as to why this is bad. Is it a peformance issue? is it hard to index or query properly? Furthermore, if boolean flags are bad, what should you use to store boolean values in a database? Is it better to store boolean flags as an integer and use a bitmask? This seems like it would be less readable.

• Mapping one to one foreign key relationships in Entity Framework 4.0?

  Hello all, I'm sure I'm missing something very simple, but let's say I have two entities, Employee and EmployeeType. Employee type would contain values like 'Full time', 'Contractor', 'Intern', etc. An Employee entity would contain one, and only one EmployeeType value. So I am designing a new .edmx model using the Model-First approach and generating my actual sql server data schema from the model. I want to add an integer type foreign key id into my Employee entity, EmployeeTypeId, which will map to the primary key of the EmployeeType entity. So I've gone ahead and done that in my Employee entity. Where I'm stuck is how, though the Entity Framework designer, to enforce the 1:1 referential constraint on that EmployeeTypeId property? Or does the EF handle that automatically behind the scenes? thanks in advance, John

• DataType for storing a long serial number (10 bytes)

  We have a device which has a 10 byte serial number which must be read into our application and stored into a .net datatype. In the device it is stored as an unsigned 10-byte (80-bit) number. I don't expect we will be performing any mathematical operations on this number, but only displaying it to the user. The .NET framework doesn't have a built in UNIT128 to store this datatype. My suggestion for storing this datatype is to create a 10 element byte array and read in the data into this array. Are there any better solutions to this problem? Note: I have seen in this question that a GUID is a 128 byte signed integer, but it seems like a bad idea to use a GUID in this fashion. Any other suggestions?

• Return the name of the class instance with the highest 'someValue' instance variable

  I have a brand new Objective-C class called test. The test class has an instance variable called someValue, which contains an integer. I create 5 instances of the test class called aTest, bTest, cTest, dTest and eTest. The appropriate synthesize and property declarations for someValue are in place. Is there a clean way of returning the name of the class instance with the highest someValue value out of all the existing test class instances? The number of class instances may vary from the 5 in my example. Note I don't care what the value is, I just want to return the name of the class instance with the highest 'someValue' instance variable. I've tried a few NSMutable arrays however can only get the value not the name of the variable that contains it. Thanks in advance

  Since I was 12, I was always wondering how I can make a function which calculates the power (e.g. 23) myself. In most languages these are included in the standard library, mostly as pow(double x, double y), but how can I write it myself? I was thinking about for loops, but it think my brain got in a loop (when I wanted to do a power with a non-integer exponent, like 54.5 or negatives 2-21) and I went crazy ;) So, how can I write a function which calculates the power of a real number? • Ruby on Rails - Currency : commas causing an issue.

  Looking on SO, I see that the preferred way to currency using RoR is using decimal(8,2) and to output them using number_to_currency(); I can get my numbers out of the DB, but I'm having issues on getting them in. Inside my update action I have the following line: if @non_labor_expense.update_attributes(params[:non_labor_expense]) puts YAML::dump(params) The dump of params shows the correct value. xx,yyy.zz , but what gets stored in the DB is only xx.00 What do I need to do in order to take into account that there may be commas and a user may not enter .zz (the cents). Some regex and for comma? how would you handle the decimal if it were .2 versus .20 . There has to be a builtin or at least a better way.   Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach? • Are there any modern platforms with non-IEEE C/C++ float formats?

  Hi all, I am writing a video game, Humm and Strumm, which requires a network component in its game engine. I can deal with differences in endianness easily, but I have hit a wall in attempting to deal with possible float memory formats. I know that modern computers have all a standard integer format, but I have heard that they may not all use the IEEE standard for floating-point integers. Is this true? While certainly I could just output it as a character string into each packet, I would still have to convert to a "well-known format" of each client, regardless of the platform. The standard printf() and atod() would be inadequate. Please note, because this game is a Free/Open Source Software program that will run on GNU/Linux, *BSD, and Microsoft Windows, I cannot use any proprietary solutions, nor any single-platform solutions.   I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. There are two tables like "FIRST_KIND_OF_USERS" and "SECOND_KIND_OF_USERS". Both are mapped to the default aspnet_users table via UserId column. Each of them has it's own integer primary key column like "FirstKindOfUsersId". When a user is trying to add some data to the database, for instance, "Create a new Task" I would like to add a new row in Tasks table with "FirstKindOfUsersId" value. Where should I store or get this value? At the moment I have these possible solutions: Get "FirstKindOfUsersId" value by User.Identity.Name each time; Use SESSION[] for storing these values (Where and when should I save these ones?) • MySQL indexes: how do they work?

  I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

• Assigning a MVC Controller property from Asp.Net page

  I don't know if I've understanding MVC correctly if my question makes no sense, but I'm trying to understand the following: I have some code on a controller that returns JSON data. The JSON data is populated based on a choice from a dropdown box on an Asp.Net page. I thought (incorrectly) that Session variables would be shared between the Asp.Net project and the MVC Project. What I'd like to do therefore (if this is possible), is to call a Sub on the MVC that sets a variable before the JSON query is run. I have the following: Sub SetCountryID(ByVal CountryID As Integer) Me.pCountrySelectedID = CountryID End Sub Which I can call by the following: Response.Write("http://localhost:7970/Home/SetCountryID/?CountryID=44") But this then results in a blank page - again obviouslly totally incorrect! Am I going about MVC the wrong way or do I still have a hell of a lot more learning to do? Is this even possible to do?

• Mapping words to numbers with respect to definition

  As part of a larger project, I need to read in text and represent each word as a number. For example, if the program reads in "Every good boy deserves fruit", then I would get a table that converts 'every' to '1742', 'good' to '977513', etc. Now, obviously I can just use a hashing algorithm to get these numbers. However, it would be more useful if words with similar meanings had numerical values close to each other, so that 'good' becomes '6827' and 'great' becomes '6835', etc. As another option, instead of a simple integer representing each number, it would be even better to have a vector made up of multiple numbers, eg (lexical_category, tense, classification, specific_word) where lexical_category is noun/verb/adjective/etc, tense is future/past/present, classification defines a wide set of general topics and specific_word is much the same as described in the previous paragraph. Does any such an algorithm exist? If not, can you give me any tips on how to get started on developing one myself? I code in C++.
