  I have a string, dictionary in the form: ('the head', {'exploded': (3.5, 1.0), 'the': (5.0, 1.0), "puppy's": (9.0, 1.0), 'head': (6.0, 1.0)}) Each parentheses is a tuple which corresponds to (score, standard deviation). I'm taking the average of just the first integer in each tuple. Can't figure out what in my function is not allowing me to get the correct answer.

• Space requirements of a merge-sort

  I'm trying to understand the space requirements for a Mergesort, O(n). I see that time requirements are basically, amount of levels(logn) * merge(n) so that makes (n log n). Now, we are still allocating n per level, in 2 different arrays, left and right. I do understand that the key here is that when the recursive functions return the space gets deallocated, but I'm not seeing it too obvious. Besides, all the info I find, just states space required is O(n) but don't explain it.   Hello Although I have no problem using SecureCRT (5.1.2 build 274) to work from Windows and connect to PC's running Linux, I have a problem when connecting to an embedded Asterisk appliance that provides"vi" through BusyBox 1.4.1 (2008-03-10). The issue I'm having, is that when I paste code into vi, the text appears jagged like this: <?php try { $dbh = new PDO("sqlite:./db.sqlite"); $dbh->exec("CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS customer (id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT, name VARCHAR(255))"); Does someone what the problem is?   I have a 32 Bit number and want to count know how many bits are 1. I'm thinking of this pseudocode: mov eax, [number] while(eax != 0) { div eax, 2 if(edx == 1) { ecx++; } shr eax, 1 } Is there a more efficient way? I'm using NASM on a x86 processor. (I'm just beginning with assembler, so please do not tell me to use code from extern libraries, because I do not even know how to include them ;) ) (I just found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/109023/best-algorithm-to-count-the-number-of-set-bits-in-a-32-bit-integer which also contains my solution. • MySQL : incrementing text id in DB

  I need to have text IDs in my application. For example, we have acceptable charset azAZ09, and allowed range of IDs [aaa] - [cZ9]. First generated id would be aaa, then aab, aac, aad e.t.c. How one can return ID & increment lower bound in transaction-fashion? (provided that there are hundreds of concurrent requests and all should have correct result) To lower the load I guess it's possible to define say 20 separate ranges, and return id from random range - this should reduce contention, but it's not clear how to do single operation in the first place. Also, please note that number of IDs in range might exceed 2^32. Another idea is having ranges of 64-bit integers, and converting integer-char id in software code, where it could be done asyncroniously. Any ideas?

  Well, I am wondering about a thing with rounding decimals, and storing them in DB. Problem is like this: Let's say we have a customer and a invoice. The invoice has total price of $100.495 (due to some discount percentage which is not integer number), but it is shown as $100.50 (when rounded, just for print on invoice). It is stored in the DB with the price of $100.495, which means that when customer makes a deposit of $100.50 it will have $0.005 extra on the account. If this is rounded, it will appear as $0, but after couple of invoices it would keep accumulating, which would appear wrong (although it actually is not). What is best to do in this case. Store the value of $100.50, or leave everything as-is?

• C Builder TForm not allocated or created properly all its controls

  Hi, I would know how i can check that all the controls on the form is created and initialized. I have form i am showing when user presses the 'update' button. It have only TProgressBar control. The handle is not NULL for this control and at random stages it can or can't set the Position/Max values. When i set TProgressBar-Max value to some integer it remains 0 after. So the question is: 1) How to really create the form and all controls on it (i am currently using just Form-Show() method, which as i can check calls the constructor) 2) How to check that all controls on the form is created and PAINTED (showed) Thanks

• Which database engines support IP addresses as a native type?

  I'm trying to find databases with support for IP addresses as a native type (as opposed to storing as a string, or an unsigned integer, which at least one commenter has already pointed out won't work for IPv6). The primary reason I'm looking for this is ease of development. For example, sorting on a "native" IP address column would be correct (as opposed to when it's stored as a string). I would assume support for such a type would also include useful operations such as determining if an IP address is inside a specified network for use in WHERE clauses. The only one I'm aware of so far is PostgreSQL with its inet class. Does anyone have any others?

  Hi, I have a loop inside a gsp page, and I want to do a calculation on the fly, so I set a variable: <g:set var="total" value="0" /> And in the loop: <g:each in="${mob}" var="m"> ... <g:set var="total" value="${total+(m.q*m.sts.uf)}"/> ... </g:each> The "total" value does not correspond to the expected calculation. m.q is an integer, and m.sts.uf is a float.   Are very large TextProperties a burden? Should they be compressed? Say I have a information stored in 2 attributes of type TextProperty in my datastore entities. The strings are always the same length of 65,000 characters and have lots of repeating integers, a sample appearing as follows: entity.pixel_idx = 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5....etc. entity.pixel_color = 2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,...etc. So these above could also be represented using much less storage memory by compressing say using only each integer and the length of its series ( '0,8' for '0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0') but then its takes time and CPU to compress and decompress? Any general ideas? Are there some tricks for testing different attempts to the problem?

  If all that you're doing is a simple one-pass iteration (i.e. only hasNext() and next(), no remove()), are you guaranteed linear time performance and/or amortized constant cost per operation? Is this specified in the Iterator contract anywhere? Are there data structures/Java Collection which cannot be iterated in linear time? java.util.Scanner implements Iterator<String>. A Scanner is hardly a data structure (e.g. remove() makes absolutely no sense). Is this considered a design blunder? Is something like PrimeGenerator implements Iterator<Integer> considered bad design, or is this exactly what Iterator is for? (hasNext() always returns true, next() computes the next number on demand, remove() makes no sense). Similarly, would it have made sense for java.util.Random implements Iterator<Double>?
