• Computer Won't Boot Properly, unless in safe mode?

  I bought a computer today and booted it up, but when I did I only got a blank screen. I checked to make sure it wasn't the monitor by connecting it to my old computer...it worked. I then tried connecting my monitor to both DVI ports and found that the bottom one did work. However, now it just boots up and says "loading windows" and then when the login screen is suppose to come up the screen just goes blank and monitor says "no input, check cord" (or something like that). I tried reinstalling windows and then I was able to log on normally. I used the CD's and reinstalled all the drivers, then rebooted...now I am stuck right back where I started. I tried taking out the RAM and inserting into different slots, that didn't fix anything. I was able to boot up into windows using safe-mode. I suspected that my ATI Radeon 6950 was the issue and downloaded the drivers, but I can't install them on safe-mode. Someone said to install C++ distr. and I tried doing that to fix driver installation problem of "failed to load detection driver" but it wouldn't let me do that either. Please someone help me, I don't want to have to deal with the evil redtape of sending it back to get a replacement! • vmware player won't run on CentOS due to missing /dev/vmmon, what could be the problem?

  So I've tried installing vmware player 3.1.4 and 3.1.3 and both times had the same problem, when I try to load a VM I get the error "Could not open /dev/vmmon". When I ls /dev/ I can see there is no "vmmon" device present. When I try running: sudo /etc/init.d/vmware start I get the output: Starting VMware services: VMware USB Arbitrator [ OK ] Virtual machine monitor [FAILED] Virtual machine communication interface [ OK ] VM communication interface socket family [ OK ] Blocking file system [ OK ] Virtual ethernet [FAILED] which shows that the Virtual Machine Monitor fails to load. I tried following the advice on this site and ran vmware-modconfig --console --install-all I notice during the compilation there are no errors, but at the end I get the message: Starting VMware services: VMware USB Arbitrator [ OK ] Virtual machine monitor [FAILED] Virtual machine communication interface [ OK ] VM communication interface socket family [ OK ] Blocking file system [ OK ] Virtual ethernet [ OK ] Unable to start services Out of curiousity I tried: sudo /sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.6.18-238.9.1.el5xen/misc/vmmod.ko But got the error message: insmod: error inserting 'vmmon.ko': -1 Invalid module format I have a feeling this may be the root of the problem, but I don't know what could be causing it or how to fix it.

• Missing Memory on Windows Server 2008

  I have a windows 2008 x64 server with 8GB of RAM installed. Task Manager and Resource Monitor both insist that 7.5GB of the RAM is in use. However, the memory list under Processes (Memory Private Bytes) doesn't add up. I do have Show Processes from all users checked and hand adding the numbers I come up with about 3.5GB of RAM. I also looked at the latest copy of SysInternals Process Explorer. And neither the Private Bytes or Working Set adds up to more than about 3.5GB of RAM in use. What's going on? ===== Update: I bounced the server to see what would happen with the memory utilization. After boot and regular operations began it sat at 3GB of RAM usage. 18 hours later, it's back up to 6.8GB of usage with no indication as to where the additional 3.5GB or so of RAM is being used. Here are links to screen shots of the resource monitor and task manager: Resource Monitor Task Manager Update 2: Well, I believe I located the problem. When I detached one of the larger databases from my sql server the amount of ram shown as "in use" dropped drastically. The Memory Private Bytes count barely moved. So I'm guessing that SQL server has some way of allocating memory where it doesn't really show up in any of the monitors. I went further and created a new database file, then transferred all of the data from the one I detached. Even though it has the same data, and the same transactions going through it, the memory in use has stayed low. Maybe there was some corruption in the DB? I'll leave it to the DB gods and go searching for another "problem" ;)

• How to set up multiple video cards in Windows XP

  All I am trying to do is run a three monitor setup, two widescreens on the good card at high res and a third smaller monitor at 1024x768 that I watch continuously updating info in. I have a Dell Vostro 200 with an HIS Radeon HD 4670 video card in the PCI-e slot. I need an additional video card that will work in an available PCI slot. I Had a Nvidia GeForce 5200 that was installed but due to what I'm assuming was a compatible driver issue (because it was Nvidia not ATI) it wouldn't run at more than 640x480 4bit color when installed simultaneously with the HIS card. Previously I used the Nvidia with the onboard Intel video to run a third monitor, but now that the HSI uses PCI-e the onboard has to be disabled. I tried a Radeon 9200 PCI card that I found (microsoft made I think) with it and only that or the HIS card could be enabled at the same time. When both were in the HIS card said "The device cannot start". SO, based on the fact that I got the Nvidia to work (although very poorly) with the new HIS Radeon HD 4670 PCI-e I know it's possible, just don't know what type of card I need to use. Any ideas?

• Combobox with collection view itemssource does not update selection box item on changes to the Model

  Hello, Sorry for the earlier lengthy post. Here is my concise (!) description. I bind a collection view to a combobox as a itemsSource and also bind its selectedvalue with a property from my view model. I must keep IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="False". I change the source list ofr the view and then refresh the view. The changed (added, removed, edited) items appear correctly in the item list of the combo. But problem is with the selected item. When I change its property which is also the displaymember path of the combo, the changed property value does not reflect back on the selecton box of the combo. If you open the combo dropdown it appears correctly on the item list but not on the selection box. Now if I change the combobox tag to Listbox in my XAML (keeping all attributes as it is) then when selected item's displaymember property value is updated, the changes reflect back on the selected item of the list box . Why this issue? Just FYI: My View Model has properties EmployeeCollectionView and SelectedEmployeeId which are bound to combo as ItemsSource and SelectedValue resp. This VM implements the INotifyPropertyChanged interface. My core employee class (list of which is the source for the EmployeeCollectionView) is simply a Model class without INotifyPropertyChanged. DisplayMemberPath is "Name" property of employee Model class. I change this by some means and expect the combo selection box to update the value. I tried refreshing ther SelectedEmployeeId by setting it 0 (where it correctly selects the dummy "-- Select All --" employee entry from itemsSource) and old selected value back. But no use. The old value takes me back to the old label. Items collection has latest entry though. When I make combobox's IsEditable=True before the view's refresh and after refresh I make IsEditable=False then the things work out correctly! But this is a patch and is unnecessary. • Errors with shotgun gem and msvcrt-ruby18.dll when running my Sinatra app

  Greetings, Every time I make a change to a Sinatra app I'm working on and try to refresh the browser (located at http://localhost:4567/) the browser will refresh and, the console window seems to restart the WEB brick server. The problem is that the content in the browser window does not change. A friend of mine told me it was a shotgun issue and referred me to rtomayko's shotgun gem: http://github.com/rtomayko/shotgun On this page I read that the shotgun gem would basically solve my problem, allowing the changes made to my app to show up in the browser window after I refresh it. So I installed the shotgun gem. The installation was successful. To activate the shotgun function you have to type shotgun before the file name. So on top of getting the error message above I also get a pop up window from Ruby.exe saying: Ruby.exe - Unable to load component This application has failed to start because msvcrt-ruby18.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I have no idea what msvcrt-ruby18.dll is but I know that installing either shotgun and/or mongrel created this problem. Where to go from here?   Hello: I've been looking around the internet trying to find a good step by step guide to extend Python in Windows, and I haven't been able to find something for my skill level. let's say you have some c code that looks like this: #include <stdio.h> #include <math.h> double valuex(float value, double rate, double timex) { float value; double rate, timex; return value / double pow ((1 + rate), (timex)); } and you want to turn that into a Python 3 module for use on a windows (64bit if that makes a difference) system. How would you go about doing that? I've looked up SWIG and Pyrex and in both circumstances they seem geared towards the unix user. With Pyrex I am not sure if it works with Python 3. I'm just trying to learn the basics of programing, using some practical examples. Lastly, if there is a good book that someone can recommend for learning to extend, I would greatly appreciate it. When I hit the refresh teh page, this time, I get the same wanting as I originally get in IE8, but when I click "Continue to this website (not recommended)", the page refresh again, displaying the same warning. What can I do to get the site to display in the WebBrowser control as it does in IE8. I would've thought that the control would be using the same core logic and therefore expected the same result.

But updatepanel is not getting updated and even modalpopup is also not getting refreshed. What could be wrong here? Even though update and refresh events are fired and executed, why is page not getting updated?

• How to do fixed price quote for design sessions?

  Normally when I do a system for a customer, I do design sessions on an hourly rate and then come out with a fixed price quotation for the full system development. Now this customer has thrown me a curveball: he doesn't want an hourly rate for design, either - he wants me to quote a fixed price to do all the design, too! Not that he's trying to cheap out, but he doesn't want to be in a situation where the longer design stretches out, the more he has to pay - and I can understand that. For the business layer it was actually not too difficult to work with this, because from his original functional spec I got a good idea of what the core business objects were, and in our design agreement I defined several objects which would be covered by a fixed design price; if any new non-trivial objects were discovered, they would be considered variances, and those would be billed on an hourly rate. So far so good. But when it comes to the UI, things start getting a lot more woolly. How many screens will there be? Don't know yet. What's going to be on each screen? Don't know yet. All we know is that it's a "dashboard" type of system, and there will be a lot of visual reporting involved e.g. gauges, graphs, etc. So maybe make it fixed price per screen design? Not a great definition; he might say that everything is going to be on one screen. Maybe a price per "visual report" design, including ability to slice & dice? Again not so easy - it might be that the entire system is just one report, and all the intelligence is going to go into how to present that segmentation. Anyone have any ideas how to do a fixed price quotation for a UI design like this?

• glitchy stuttery iphone game loop

  This is a problem I've been trying to solve for a few days now, and I've looked at the various solutions on stackoverflow and nothing has really seemed to work for me. I'm making an iPhone game with OpenGLES graphics and accelerometer input, at this point it's very simple, but the rendering is already pretty bad... it stutters and seems to jump back or forward in time. It doesn't happen a lot, but it happens enough to be a problem. I mean, who wants to play a game where a bullet gets magically transported into the player, and then it's game over? No one. I've tried using NSTimer for the game loop, I've tried using a separate thread (with a frame rate and continuously) I've tried using different frame rates, from 30FPS to 60FPS (It seems to have a max frame rate around 45FPS, but no problems at 30FPS) I've tried using timeIntervalSince1970 and CFGetAbsoluteTime to measure loop time, with no noticeable diffence Anyone have any ideas on what is the best way to get this looking better? One of the posts I've read suggested running the simulation at a fixed frame rate and then just render as fast as possible, does that seem like a good idea?

To do that, I've had to run through some computations, pulling the relevant parameters from the datasheets. I'm not sure I've got it right -- would appreciate a check! Here's the simplest example: PIC10F220 is the simplest possible PIC with an ADC. Runs at clock speed of 8MHz. Has an instruction cycle of 0.5us (4 clock steps per instruction) So: Taking Tacq = 6.06 us (acquisition time for ADC, assume chip temp. = 50*C) [datasheet p34] Taking Fosc = 8MHz (? clock speed) Taking divisor = 4 (4 clock steps per CPU instruction) This gives TAD = 0.5us (TAD = 1/(Fosc/divisor) ) Conversion time is 13*TAD [datasheet p31] This gives conversion time 6.5us ADC duration is then 12.56 us [? Tacq + 13*TAD] Assuming at least 2 instructions for load/store: This is another 1 us [0.5 us per instruction] Which would give max sampling rate of 73.7 ksps (1/13.56) Supposing 8 more instructions for real-time processing: This is another 4 us Thus, total ADC/handling time = 17.56us (12.56us + 1us + 4us) So expected upper sampling rate is 56.9 ksps. Nyquist frequency for this sampling rate is therefore 28 kHz. If this is right, it suggests the (theoretical) performance suitability of this chip's A/D is for signals that are bandlimited to 28 kHz. Is this a correct interpretation of the information given in the data sheet? Any pointers would be much appreciated! AKE

• Jquery Internet Explorer 8 compatibility issue, does not load data unless history is deleted...

  Hey guys, I have a weird problem. I have an update system that refreshes data on a time interval. It works well in all browsers except internet explorer 8. The problem is that once it loads the data, it does not matter if the data updates further, it will not update the data visually until the internet history is cleared. I am not using any cookies server-side...Anyone ever encounter something like this? • Manually Writing the HTML in TWebBrowser Pt. 2

  As the name suggests this is a continuation (sort of) of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2784679/manually-writing-the-html-in-twebbrowser This time around I'm trying to add some auto-refresh logic to the HTML I get. I have pieced together an approach from several sources (see below). In short, I am trying to locate the title node and add a meta node after it (in the HTML head node). But, I get an access violation. • setInterval alternative

  Hi folks, In my app I am polling the webserver for messages every second and displaying them in the frontend. I use setInterval to achieve this. However as long as the user stays on that page the client keeps polling the server with requests even if there is no data. The server does give an indication when no more messages are being generated by setting a variable. I thought of using this variable to clearInterval and stop the timer but that didn't work. What else can I use in this situation? I am using jquery and django. Here is my code: jquery: var refresh = setInterval( function () { var toLoad = '/myMonitor'+' #content'; $('#content').load(toLoad).show(); }, 1000); // refresh every 1000 milliseconds }); html: div id=content is here I can access the django variable for completion in html with each refresh.   Problem Am looking to automatically move the mouse cursor and simulate mouse button clicks from the command-line using an external script. Am not looking to: Record mouse movement and playback (e.g., xnee, xmacro) Instantly move the mouse from one location to another (e.g., xdotool, Python's warp_pointer) Ideal Solution What I'd like to do is the following: Edit a simple script file (e.g., mouse-script.txt). Add a list of coordinates, movement speeds, delays, and button clicks. For example: (x, y, rate) = (500, 500, 50) sleep = 5 click = left Run the script: xsim < mouse-script.txt. Question How do you automate mouse movement so that it transitions from its current location to another spot on the screen, at a specific velocity? For example: xdotool mousemove 500 500 --rate 50 The --rate 50 doesn't exist with xdotool. I could write a script that uses xdotool to get the current mouse coordinates then move it a pixel at a time to the destination with a suitable sleep interval; what automated testing tool already does this? • DataGridView: how to make scrollbar in sync with current cell selection?

  I have a windows application with DataGridView as data presentation. Every 2 minutes, the grid will be refreshed with new data. In order to keep the scroll bar in sync with the new data added, I have to reset its ScrollBars: dbv.Rows.Clear(); // clear rows SCrollBars sc = dbv.ScrollBars; dbv.ScrollBars = ScrollBars.None; // continue to populate rows such as dbv.Rows.Add(obj); dbv.ScrollBars = sc; // restore the scroll bar setting back With above codes, the scroll bar reappears fine after data refresh. The problem is that the application requires to set certain cell as selected after the refresh: dbv.CurrentCell = dbv[0, selectedRowIndex]; With above code, the cell is selected; however, the scroll bar's position does not reflect the position of the selected cell's row position. When I try to move the scroll bar after the refresh, the grid will jump to the first row. It seems that the scroll bar position is set back to 0 after the reset. The code to set grid's CurrentCell does not cause the scroll bar to reposition to the correct place. There is no property or method to get or set scroll bar's value in DataGriadView, as far as I know. I also tried to set the selected row to the top: dbv.CurrentCell = dbv[0, selectedRowIndex]; dbv.FirstDisplayedScrollingRowIndex = selectedRowIndex; The row will be set to the top, but the scroll bar's position is still out of sync. Not sure if there is any way to make scroll bar's position in sync with the selected row which is set in code?

• How to show a form field ONLY if another is selected in JavaScript or jQuery?

How can this be done with either javascript or the jquery framework? EDIT by the way, it would be nice if this can be achieved without the page needing to refresh and losing previously submitted form data. I know form data can still be kept using variables that store the values even on page refresh, but I was hoping for that effect that I see on a lot of sites where the additional text area (or other form element) just appears without page refresh.

• Problems migrating databinding in VB.NET from Winforms to ASP.NET 2.0

  And this was supposed to be so easy... I have existing business and data access layers that handle the retrieval and update of the data in question. These work great with the existing Winforms application (.Net V2.0) Now, in trying to write a new web-based UI, I'm running into all sorts of problems (last time I wrote asp.net code was in 1.1). Specifically, I can't data bind a text box to a business object. Oh, sure there's the ObjectDataSource but that wants to know how to do CRUD operations on the data. What I'm looking for is something that acts like the 'classic' binding objects so that, in my code, it's as simple as retrieving the object and doing a a refresh. The data component like FormView and DetailsView are so generic-looking that it's ridiculous. The existing application would have tabbed dialogs, text boxes grouped by panels, etc. On top of that, I have a directive to use master pages and unless one control causes it, I can't seem to get the content section to expand. I can't just put a text box 'below' the bottom of "Content1" and have it resize the content section - which gives me the same results as an earlier question I posted when the footer wasn't being 'pushed down' - relative position solved that but doesn't seem to solve it with placing small text boxes in the area. What I want is fairly simple. Something like: bindingobject.datasource = businessdataobject bindingobject.refresh ...and have the text boxes refresh with the new values. Likewise to have 'businessdataobject' properties updated as the user enters new data. I was able to do this with the GridView (grdRequests.DataSource = lstRequests) by making a list of asp:BoundField tags inside the collection of the GridView. Am I tilting at windmills here?

• Issue scrolling table view with content inset

  Hi all, I am experiencing a weird scrolling issue and I was hoping someone could give me a hand in trying to identify why this is happening. I have included the part of my code that I think is relevant to the question but am happy to update this post with whatever else is needed. I have implemented a pull to refresh view in the tableview's content inset area. The refresh fires an Async NSURLConnection that pulls data from a webserver, parses the relevant information and refreshes the table as required. I have included a couple of screenshots below that clearly identify what is happening at the moment. Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas on what I should be looking at to try and fix it?
