• How to get Google Desktop to index searchable pdf's

  I've got a scanner that converts documents to pdfs. The pdf that gets produced is searchable. However when google desktop indexes the file it doesn't appear to be indexing any of the contents of the pdf (although it is indexing the content of other pdfs on the computer). I believe Google Desktop only indexes pdfs that are searchable and don't have images. Have others found a good way around this problem? I'm trying to get my household and office paperless, and I'd like to just scan in documents and rely on Google Desktop to find stuff.

• Two people using the same computer at the same time remotely!

  We have two computer in office and two people. My computer is much more faster than another computer. Is it possible my colleague connect to my computer remotely and work by my computer? Using "Remote Desktop" in Windows only one user can log into computer. So when he connect remotely, my user logged off. Is there a tool which can help in this case? I already knew VNC (RealVNC) But it's not helping because when a user connect to my computer, he see exactly my desktop, not his own user desktop.

• What is a fairly accepted endpoints to concurrent calls ratio for a PBX?

Not too positive about the relevance of this question to Server Fault, but I'll let you guys poke around at it anyway. :) I'm trying to figure out what an accepted ratio of endpoints to concurrent calls on the "average" office PBX. I'm defining concurrent calls as any call being placed, including internal calls. I'm not going to be considering call centers into this ratio, I'll be looking at those differently, anyway. To give you guys a little history behind the question: I need this ratio to be able to figure out decent specs for a virtual PBX service I'm going to be rolling out within the upcoming months. • AD Users outside the building

  I've never had a customer ask me this, but they keep insisting if they have Active Directory and a Domain, that mobile[road warriors] users will not be able to login to their laptops if they are at home or away from the office. I told them that is would use "cache" creds to do this. Am I right or wrong? I've been told this and found a couple of forums saying the same thing. What is really going on and how are the laptops able to do this?

• Automatically allowing SSH into a machine behind a UPNP router?

  Hi I have a MacBook connecting to the Internet from behind various routers from time to time (home, office, etc). All of the routers support UPNP. I need to allow a co-worker to SSH into the machine, without configuring each router each time to forward port 22 to the MacBook. Is there any way to get the MacBook to use UPNP (or some other method) to automatically configure any supporting router that it is behind to forward port 22 to itself? That would allow the co-worker to SSH into the MacBook but just knowing its external IP, which is easy.

• Windows 7 disc not recognized by DVD drive

  My machine is a recent model Systemax, less than 2 years old. It came with Vista 32bit and I bought Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for it. When I insert the Windows 7 DVD into the drive, it churns a little but does not recognize the disc. If I double click the DVD drive icon, it prompts me to insert a disc. I tried a different DVD (Office 2007) and the drive recognized the disc. I tried the Windows 7 disc in my Dell laptop and it recognized the disc. So basically, the disc is good and the drive is good, but they don't like each other. I tried to boot to the Windows 7 DVD and the system did not see it. I turned off the Lightscribe service and that didn't help. Does anybody have an idea what's wrong here? Thanks.

• Unable to bring back terminal launcher in fedora

  Our office housing keeping guy sat on my linux (Fedora 7) system and somehow removed the main panel. By panel I mean where all the menus are there - Applications, Places, System etc. and contains a tab for every running application. I brought back the panel but now I don't see the terminal launcher and I can't find it anywhere. It used to be there in "Applications - System Tools - Terminal" but now the System Tools option itself is not present there. System - Preferences - Look and Feel - Main Menu. There one System option is unchecked but I can't check it and apply. I am logged in as root. How do I bring it back? Please help. This is very irritating and weird. That guy doesn't even know what he has done so no use of asking him. :)

  Ringo is a delegate of Paul's mailbox in Exchange, but when Ringo sends mail from Paul's mailbox, the recipient sees "Paul" in the sender field, rather than "Paul Sent On Behalf Of Ringo" Paul has set "Editor" permissions for Ringo to his mailbox, and Ringo has been granted "Send on behalf of" permissions in Exchange. Ringo did at one time have "Send As" permissions for Paul's mailbox in Exchange, but this has since been removed. This is also the case for all other delegates to Paul's mailbox. How do I make it so that emails sent by Paul's delegates show the "Sent On Behalf Of" information in the Sender field? Using Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

• Excel 2002 disappears with no error message

  Excel 2002 closes about 30 seconds after I open it. No further action has to be taken; I open the program, wait a little while, and the window and process just disappears. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Office 2002 Pro installed. Recently, Outlook 2007 was added to the computer (previously not installed at all.) Word 2002 works fine. Excel 2002 also works fine on another computer with a similar configuration. Things I've already checked for or tried: Verified that no add-ins are enabled. Repairing the installation. Uninstalling and reinstalling. Rename %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Excel I'm guessing that it is trying to load a component that doesn't exist and failing, but I don't know how to proceed. Suggestions welcome. Thank you!

  Hi all, I have a friend with a Toshiba Satellite A200. He's running Vista HP SP2 32-bit. For some reason, when he attempts to uninstall Open Office or some other programs, a dialog box appears, which states, "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." After I click OK, another dialog box entitled "Installed Updates" says that "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall _. Please contact your system administrator." Any ideas? • Driver problems with rerunning WIM capture

  How do I handle driver problems associated with creating a new WIM file using a previously created image as a base? I am using a custom MDT image which installs Windows 7, Office 2010, etc which was created from a previously deployed base image of Windows 7 + SP 1 + updates. When the driver injection is enabled I receive a group of messages (collected from different logs, screens, etc). If I turn the preinstall driver injection off things work as expected. If I leave it on I receive the following messages. windows cannot install required files 0x80004005 8004004 non zero return code ltiapply rc=31 Unhandled error returned by LTIApply: a device attached to the system is not functioning. • Windows 7 has trouble installing software with Visual C++ 2005 & 2008

  I have been reinstalling windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately looses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up loosing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and visual studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

  Many times I connected to windows computer which has static public ip address via remote desktop over wan links. I'm wondering how could I connect to the remote computer that has dynamic public ip address & private ip addresses assigned. I've 2 systems at home: xp system-------connected to internet(dynamic public ip) & allowed other users to connected to the internet on the interface. windows vista system--------enabled dhcp on the interface to access internet from xp. How could I remotely connect from my office to the 'vista system'?. If I've a router/modem at my home it may be possible to allow the ports for the system but I don't. Any tips?

• How to best migrate one Windows 2008 R2 / SharePoint / Exchange / Terminal Services (All-in-one) int

  Hello, My client has one machine with Windows 2008 R2 and everything on it. By everything I mean AD, DNS, SharePoint 2010 Standard, Exchange 2010 Standard, Terminal Services, Office 2010 and a bunch of additional apps. Everything stands on I7 x 2 and 36gb ram for 7 people total. I've decided that we should virtualize it and split things into 4 VM's and keep host only with Hyper-V installed to host all the machines. What problems should I expect? What good advices can you give. My plan is that when i move everything to VM's i will move vm's to safe place and format the host as it has a lot of really bad things happening on it. But this also means that everything will be wiped from current solution so I have to be sure that Exchange etc will work when host gets wiped. MadBoy

• SharePoint Designer prompts for credentials when edited from IE8

  Our intranet is hosted using the free SharePoint services on Windows 2003. Consider the following page: http://vserver003/help/technology/multimedia/multimedia.htm On selecting "Edit with Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer" from IE8, SPD launches, opens the website and then the selected page - all is well. In order to make moving the intranet easier, we've set-up a DNS setting called intranet.company.local so you can also access the intranet that way: http://intranet.company.local/help/technology/multimedia/multimedia.htm However, when you edit this page, SPD designer prompts you for credential, i.e. domain\username and password. If you enter the details it opens fine. If you don't enter the details, the page still opens but not the website. Any ideas have to get around this prompt? Haven't a clue where to start looking.   We use a hosted exchange service. When users want to set up Outlook 2010 to access their account, they open Outlook and run through the configuration steps. Autodiscover is enabled, and in the user's active directory profile, their email address is in the email field. However, when the configuration process reaches a point where they are prompted for their email account's username and password, their active directory username is filled in by default instead of their email address. Is there a way to fix that? Users get confused and try to enter their email password over and over again and wonder why it doesn't work (and completely miss/ignore the "use another account" button even though they have instructions right in front of them). I'm also using the Office 2010 ADM's in group policy, but I haven't yet seen an option to specify what gets auto-populated in that windows security prompt.

• How reduce size of PPT 2010 Notes Pages PDFs?

  I have a PPT presentation of about 400 slides that I periodically update and publish as PDF. The view I publish is the Notes Pages. This worked fine for several years, during which time I was using PPT 2002. I recently upgraded to PPT 2010, and now I find that the PDFs I create are about 25 times bigger than they used to be, and the text in the slides part of the Notes Pages is no longer selectable in Acrobat. According to Why does Powerpoint 2010 print notes pages to PDF as raster images? , the problem is that PPT 2010 is rendering the slides' content as images, which is not what earlier versions of PPT did. The solution offered in that discussion involves Office Automation and VBA, neither of which I know anything about, and it's not clear whether that approach solves the problem of the text in the slides not being selectable in the PDF. Isn't there a simple way to get PPT 2010 to print Notes Pages to PDF the way it did in PPT 2002?

• OpenWrt Backfire 10.03 Frequently Becoming Unresponsive (Bridged Client)

  I have a Linksys WRT54G version 2 that I've flashed with OpenWrt Backfire 10.03. It's acting as a bridged client using the wl.o driver to give me network access in my home office, which is in a far corner of my house in a position that would make it exceedingly difficult to fish network cabling in through the walls. I have three network-ready devices attached to the device that don't currently support WiFi, including a networked printer. Ever since I migrated from WhiteRussian, which was also set up as a bridged client, to Backfire, the device has been becoming unresponsive, as though the OS itself has crashed or frozen. The WLAN light becomes completely solid and the LAN lights stay mostly solid, blipping off and then back on again maybe once a second or so. They all blink more or less in unison. Is there some way I can diagnose why this is happening so I can fix it? Right now, the only way to fix it is to unplug the device and plug it back in.

• VPN Connected, How to browse files? Windows Vista

  I am trying to establish a VPN connection to a server in my office from my laptop at home. I tried some of the steps as mentioned here: Connect to a network Connect to a workplace Use my Internet Connection (VPN) Then type server IP address and then my username & password. After creating a VPN connection, I can see I am connected to it. Now I want to browse files on the server. But I have no clue where I should look for them. I was thinking more of a simple step, like, Windows Run > Type ip address > \\124.345.678.900, then a prompt asking username and password, and finally a window opens to view the files. I tried to google it, but still unable to view files. Please help. Update: I didn't mention that when I try to connect to server via \\124.345.678.900 I get 0x80070043 error message.

• Compaq nc4200 screen cutting out and keyboard lagging after dropping - could I repair this?

  I have a HP Compaq nc4200 laptop. I got it from a family member who no longer needed it, who got it from a sale of old office equipment, so it's at the very least third-hand, and somewhat battered. Today, I dropped it. It seemed unharmed at first, but the screen cuts out every few minutes (sometimes seconds), then fades back. Keyboard input also occasionally starts lagging, as does the mouse. It might be a coincidence, but, oddly, it seems as if, when the screen cuts out, it comes back sooner if I use the trackpad. Is this something that I could fix? What might be causing it?

• Generating documents with templating from a form

  Hello, I would like to create a document generator with templating. The workflow should be as following: The user input data to a static form (simple text input). The user chooses a graphically designed template. A document with the chosen template containing the user data is generated. The initial templates repository is prepared in advance, but it should be easy to add new templates to the process. I have the full MS Office suite and the preferred file format is an MS .doc.
